As a devil may cry fan, they had the right idea up until they said "this is the new dante" instead of using nero and just focusing on making him fight either more like dante or virgil, hence the angel and devil weapons. Kat could introduce kyrie to punk nero, then they would've made nero look cooler, and dante would've never been turned emo.

    • @s.kanessuperbiatv6464
      @s.kanessuperbiatv6464 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I've always said the same - Nero should've been the protagonist. Hell, all those grapple abilities could've easily been devil bringer. There's alot of elements (namely limbo and the creative level direction) that I would've loved to see continue in the mainlines series.

    • @Redlobstermarjane

    • @Vi0ar

People would have HATED that. Most people don't remember but people use to despise Nero. They felt like his was a cheap Dante knock off.
People only started to come around to him after the reboot and found out that he's much better than the alternative cheap Dante knockoff.

Having played it back in the day, I think there is a lot of good in DMC if you're not expecting a follow up to Devil May Cry 3 and 4. Even as a spinoff, I think it could have worked. Treating it like a reboot basically killed it on the spot and denied it of a chance it did deserve.

Itsuno (the director) loved what ninja theory did with the new direction and wanted to make a DmC 2.
But fans would declined, So he took the good features from DmC to DMC 5.
    Straight forward levels
    Scripted Environment
    Dynamic Music
    Training mode
    Realistic Art style
Nero design* (no longer dante 2)
    Some Vergil moveset
    Enemy Introduction
    Slow-mo on last kill
Most importantly, No Resident Evil DNA anymore (heavy back tracking, finding keys, complex map, etc)
It's ironic bc Ninja Theory indirectly made DMC5 as a masterpiece, yet only few people realized
There's even a video that DMC5 is actually a reboot of DmC
ppl who denied should watch the video so they enlightened lol

DmC doesnt have a realistic artstyle imo its more like a nu metal album cover, almost very comic booky at times while 5 is just straight realism but yeah. DmC has some good ideas 5 should have took must style mode as well

"It's ironic bc Ninja Theory indirectly made DMC5 as a masterpiece, "
whaa... Ninja Theory was always pretentious and mediocre developer. It's not like I didn't play their games. Extremely easy to pick up. FFS I could pull off SSS in DmC: DmC with one move.... ONE! Extremely boring and let's not forget the color coded enemies that completley made weapon swtiching useless. Good thing it was remedied, you know why? They f-ed up the game so bad, Capcom had to fly Itsuno to help them.
DmC had very bad ideas and I am glad they canned them. As for the "Realistic Art style" maybe you should thank Resident Evil Remakes since Capcom wanted to play around with the new facemaping tehcnology. The downside is that it ages quick and lacks the artistic charm that older Resident Evil games have, including DMC (the originals).

thanks for jumping to conclusion and outing me as "fanboy". If we gonna play it this way:
      Now listen here... NT fanboy...
The things you praise NT for were under the feedback of Itsuno and co. This is why the definitive edition happened and this is why the 30fps locked, no targeting vanilla sucked. I won't even go into enemy design since this is subjective and personal preference, but at least for me they sucked ass and looked really lame.
It was an ok-ish hack and slash at the usual meh NT level, but carrying the DMC name and assblasting every fan and trying to slap the "they mad because no white hair lol" tag on them for some reason didn't play out well. I am sure Capcom picked up few things about PRing out of situation, but generally speaking - I am glad NT found their niche and I still think they are meh developer with pretentious and hand holding games. Including the Senua's games.
A lot of times normies and companies label passionate fans as toxic and always backfires because not everyone is toxic asshole... Unbelievable - I know.

That got me thinking "oh just another fanboy of the original". Talking stuff that are not even discussed in the first place.

This game could have been much more successful if it was billed as an alternate universe instead of a reboot. A change in the name and this game could have spawned its own sub-franchise. Something like:
    *DmC: Nephlim's Return*
Something to show it's connection to the Devil May Cry universe, but also shows that this is a different story set in a different location.
    Just a thought.

I will be the minority here that absolutely loves this game.
I have my own cons about this game, but the thing that makes this so enjoyable and also has its unique depth is that it highlights a vulnerability this version of Dante has.
There's a lot of implied painful backstory for him but gradually he uses his old and newfound experiences when it came to overcoming the "human" problems. In the end, defeating his own brother actually puts him at another problem. Dante in the reboot/standalone universe makes us realize you can't always solve your problems with swords and bullets...which Dante even rhetorically asks at the early chapter and is also already foreshadowed by his own twin brother at the beginning.
In conclusion, despite not having an ounce of human genetics, this reboot version shows us the vulnerable human condition, and some of them Dante in DmC: Devil May Cry exhibits.
But okay yes I also just highly enjoyed how unapologetically bombastic this title is, which I have to say is substantially lacking even in DMC 5. That volume just doesn't hit enough.

    • @billyboleson2830
      @billyboleson2830 ปีที่แล้ว +1

So basically DmC Dante is more like Sparda then OG Dante is lol

    • @CelesteLunaRael
      @CelesteLunaRael ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@billyboleson2830 Huh, I actually never thought of it that way. In comparison, before DMC 5, I thought his and Vergil's story is quite similar.
Both are lost and disenfranchised young men and had sustained a kind of anger. But Vergil's story is about his guilt, bitterness at being helpless, etc. So his journey is about power.
Reboot Dante's is self-preservation and reactions against being isolated for so long. He warms up immediately to people he can see are trustworthy and reciprocates it.
I guess that DMC 5 line when Vergil asks "if their positions were switched" would their outlooks would've been different.
The standalone reboot universe already answers this by saying Dante and Vergil have certain traits that would still suggest that Dante's and Vergil's personalities would likely be intact regardless of who had been thrown at a more crueler fate.
As for him being like Sparda, if you mean the OG, I can kind of understand. OG Sparda turns a new leaf after gradually finding admiration and appreciation of the humankind, though that arc is left implied for the audience.

I like the gameplay(especially the quick combos and the punches and kick moves the grapple hooks have) and the art style of the environment and regular enemies. The only thing holding the game back was the underwhelming writing, the color coded enemies, lack of taunts, and every boss that isn't Bob Barbas being lame. Definitive edition should have been the version at launch. Lock on in DE helps alots as melee projectiles attacks would hit the wrong enemy and lock on/swapping target lock on actually allowed me to target multiple enemies with over drive(like a stationary drive by). Plus hardcore mode, must style, and god must die are pretty fun and I wish they were in 5.

I played all the DMC games and i still liked this game, I liked it for the story as i think DmC has the better story and stakes. I know people laugh at the swearing and say how childish it is but its story is still better than the main line games. 1 was about beating Mundus, 2 was about Arias and Argosax, 3 being hte best was Vergil and Arkham, 4 was the order of the sword and playing the game in reverse and 5 was about Vergil again. seems they can't tell a good story without the focus being on Vergil.
what i liked about his story is how Mundus basically already won, he controlled the human world. he was on top as an emperor and Dante and Vergil while separated were just trying to survive or live in this world. we saw Virgil take the fight to Mundus where Dante was just trying to enjoy his life until he was brought into the fold. the set up is similar and different from the main series
Main line: Sparda defected and beat mundus then lives in the human world, Demons attack the family home and their mother is killed. Questions from this, who attacked the house, where was Sparda, did he die in the attack? was he dead before that? who possibly could have taken him out? if it was Mundus then how did Sparda seal mundus away for the events of DMC 1 to happen? why did Mundus invite Dante to the Island he was returning to before he had time to come back and regain is full power. a case of stupid villian syndrome i guess.
Dmc: Sparda defected, never beat Mundus but lived int he human world with the Angel Eve, their home was attacked BY Mundus, Eve is killed and Sparda is imprisoned, we don't know where but he is possibly still alive. its alittle more clear how things played out.
Yea it was different but that was also the fault of Capcom in its development as Ninjatheory original ideas were alot closer to the main line games but capcom wanted them to be more different.
Capcom has shown some love towards DmC. some of the ideas for Vergil like the Yamato being able to cut reality was taken from DmC, in DMC 4 special edition Nero uses his buster to grapple to objects, for Vergil they used his summon sword to teleport in place of a grapple move. that was taken from DmC. DMC5 Dante's EX color is DmC Dante's color scheme. Vergils Devil trigger making a clone, taken from DmC.

Someone has probably already said this, but the reason for the limitations on equipped weapons and lack of style switching brought up at 20:50 is that DMC3 is a PS2 game. Hardware limitations such as lack of RAM made giving you more options impossible at the time. All PC versions have some great mods that implement style and weapon switching fully, and on the Switch port of DMC3 they also added style and weapon switching. If you ever get an urge to replay through the game again, I'd highly recommend grabbing a style switcher mod and giving it a shot as something to spice up a second playthrough.

I’m a hardcore doc fan but I really liked this game. The thing I wish they would’ve done though was keep it to how they first started to perceive it with Dante locked in that interrogation room. My take from that trailer was that the character was brung brain washed or mk ultra into believing he was a Dante. I think they could’ve took that concept and did something very interesting with it as long as they dropped hints of psychological fragmentation throughout the game and exposed what was truly going on in its world. The whole smoking cigarettes wasn’t really needed for his character though.

3:06 Well I think the reason the new Dante was featured rather than the old was explicitly because DmC was coming out at that time and Capcom would be more willing to license him as some easy marketing, same with Raiden ('cause MGR was coming out at that time) and Big Daddy (as Bioshock Infinite was also released at the start of 2013).

  • @armedweiss5531
    @armedweiss5531 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If Capcom had sold DmC as an alternate continuity that would get releases alongside the original one, I feel that it would have been way better received by the fans. Treating it as a full on reboot replacing the original series, especially with its take on Dante and Vergil, killed the game before it even launched.
The reason DMC3 only gives you one style at a time and 2 weapons and 2 guns is due to the PS2's hardware. It straight up didn't have enough RAM to implement style changing and access to all of Dante's gear at once. If you ever get your hands on the Switch version it has a Freestyle Mode that gives you access to Dante's entire kit at once which shatters the game's skill ceiling into outer space.

As a DmC fan myself, and this game being my introduction to the DMC games as a whole, imo they got a lot of things right but also a lot of things wrong. Right being things slow no insta kill, training mode, dynamic music, and linear level design. Wrong being the characters and their personalities and backstories, the dialogue and how stupid it is, the god awful enemy design (why are their so many color coded enemies on higher difficulties and why do so many enemies have super armor? Don’t even get me started on the dreamwalkers. They’re annoying imo), and the initial missing of a lock on until they released the definitive edition in which CONSOLE PLAYERS only got lock on and nobody else. I also disliked the angel and demon mode buttons and especially the demon mode weapons, mainly because of how slow they are in which I get it, high damage but slow attacks, but that doesn’t translate well when you throw that in against a red cat enemy and a blue cat enemy attacking you both at once and if you kill one of them the other goes into rage mode. I feel like if they removed the super armor on a lot of the enemies, and the color coded enemies system (and now that I think about, remove the amount of enemies that have shields in a single encounter because that just makes things more annoying on harder difficulties as a trophy hunter myself than difficult) this game would be a bit better because I like it mechanically and is the only reason why I don’t mind replaying it, specifically training and bloody palace.
    1:07 also doom 2016 isn’t a reboot, but a continuation.

    That's the idea myguy. Replayability.
You see DMC (the original games) were build by OG game developers who's skills were honed in the arcade games. And here we have Capcom, one of the OGs along SEGA, Konami, NAMCO, TAITO etc. everyone of them veterans at arcade games that were hard and encouraged replayablity so you can get better.
Yes - you will not get everything from the first playtrough. You have to replay the game, the design, the flow itself subtly tell you to come back again and play it. Each time you do - things change along your skill and control and each time - it is different. And you are not bothered, because you already love the combo system, you love the weapons. And by now - you probably found which style suits you the best. This and you could always try the Style Switcher mod for DMC3.

I don’t really find Dante annoying. He’s not always funny, but most of the time he’s amusing and I feel that most of the cutscenes do help humanise him enough. Him choosing to protect humanity and almost kill his brother did feel a little rushed, but besides that I thought he was a pretty good protagonist.

When I saw the DMC reboot I was a little thrown off by how they basically stole the name of the franchise and key characters and made their own game. Dante in DMC was on point with your review about Juvenile.

I think competition would be putting it too generously, imitator or flattery/homaging would be better in regards to the parent series. I do however think it would’ve been a stronger competitor for God of War, in terms of combat mechanics. Honestly based on what the developers were intending, I think their priorities were misplaced as God of War is essentially what they wanted to create “great combat with an elevated narrative”.
Personally, God of War has always been more of a treadmill simulator that significantly popularized QTEs (along side KH 2), especially after the PS2 era. For the people who wanted that kind of experience with maybe a little more developed combat system, I think DmC would have been able to fill that itch if not over take GoW. The developers just needed to be more realistic and not huff their own gas as much when it came to the story.

18:30 I always feel like people didn't look into the history of the games lifecycle enough to understand why DMC fans had to gatekeep and complain in mass that their series was being killed off and replaced by something else for literally no reason. DMC4 by all objective measures was a good game that sold well which makes the idea of a "Reboot" horrendously stupid in every single way. Especially with how the DMC4 story passes the torch to Nero only to be immediately dropped and delete the entirety of that character to have a more "Western Appeal" in the Reboot makes zero fucking sense. Fundamentally what was the big difference? They're still demons, it's still about hell vs earth, vergil and dante are still rivals, sparda and eve are gone, and mundus is still the big bad. So they Rebooted the storyline and didn't change jack shit about the major plot points that happened so what even was the point? If they wanted to change the gameplay they didn't need to Reboot the entire story just give us a new character. Imagine this: In an alternate timeline there is Dantes DmC moveset inside DMC5 in the form of a new character. Why did the devs feel like DmC Dante had to go that gameplay direction at the cost of everything else built up to that point? DmC Dante could've easily been reworked as a new character who could've been the introduction to Angels and Nephilim with his own unique arsenal of Angel and Demon weapons used in conjunction. They didn't think about the long term effects of DMC as a whole. If anything DmC was intentionally designed to not be liked by the fans in order for them to experiment with weird changes to the gameplay that ultimately went nowhere. Why does no one want to openly praise DmC gameplay? Look at the speedrun. It will pretty much show you exactly why nobody cares for this combat system. Compare the speedrun to DMC1 and you can just see how much was ripped out for no reason.

Also, those lil' flying assholes with the shields bother me more than the color-coded enemies. It's bad enough that I can't hit them regularly with my weapons until I yank their shields. Sounds reasonable.
I have a question though about DMC5. I'm struggling to understand why people - who are not extreme fanboys - keep praising it.
There are so many things that are... just bad.
After hearing so much praise about the game I expected it to be great, however it turned out to be one of the biggest disappointments I ever had.
It doesn't stand even close to the top games of the genre (for me its Bayonetta 2, nothing else come even close).
I tried giving this game second, then third, then forth chance but the more I play it the more it gives me DMC 2 flashbacks.
First, V. Playing him is a pointless chore.
Second, half of the game you play as Nero whose combat - even though it's not as bad as V - is very shallow. For comparison DmC's Vergil even though he has similarly small number of moves is as deep as an ocean (I would never forgive NT for NOT letting us play as Vergil in the main campaign).
Third, DMC5's target lock is $H!T. It's just as bad as invisible target lock in DmC because you can't switch target you are locked on.
In DmC however dodge did not require directional input while in DMC5 it does.
Not just directional, but the one where you need to be locked on to the enemy to do the dodge which is just stupid.
Having directional dodge is not a good idea for an action game in general, and much more so for the game where you can get surrounded by enemies and can't switch target lock target.
They also made moves high commitment moves like in dark souls - that is you cannot dodge cancel your attack frames - which is also a bad idea for a game with fast enemies that tend to swarm you.
Again, look at DmC's Vergil: half of his moves cannot be dodge cancelled, yet he has moves that can be, and even for moves that can't be cancelled you can use his doppelganger to give you safety space. Playing it safe or going for high-risk option becomes your choice.
Forth, DMC5 camera is absolutely terrible. It's not just camera fault though but tight and claustrophobic levels. Almost as if both camera and levels come from Resident Evil series (where they would be fitting gameplay and style). What a funny coincidence that Resident Evil and DMC5 shares the game engine...
Fifth, speaking of levels, half of them are an uninspired clusterfudge of rubble and the other half of them are Qlipoth intestines. The latter is at least somewhat creative, but its EXACTLY THE SAME level for bloody HALF of the game.
To make things worse color pallette is dull, but somehow it's the same as the one monsters have which sometimes make them blend with the level... What the heck is that? It would be bad even in Resident Evil game where you are supposed to get ambushed by zombies!
Sixths, regarding monsters, they are just dull. I can't think of one that was fun to fight with. They however did ported the worst enemy from DmC for some reason - the Witch (in DMC5 it become Baphomet) - but Witch at least had summoned swords you could parry into it, while Baphomet just spams homing projectiles from off-camera. Pfff...
Sevenths, plot is meh. It have so many plot holes that if you think about them you will die from cringe. Granted, plot is not a strong part of any Devil May Cry game but claims that DmC plot sucks while DMC5 plot is great are just unfair.
TBH only thing I liked about its plot is how Demon King was presented. Everything else was just meh.
Finally, DMC5 have just so many small irritating details, like 100500 loading screens (you press restart level - now prepare to watch loading screen 3 times), playable character being swapped all the time - I guess to make us NOT to learn timings and controls and play the game as a bloody button masher, overloaded UI in between missions, not being able to switch between devil breakers with new ones messing whatever plan of using them you had, FPS drops (game can't even produce 60 FPS reliably... DmC for example on my PC never drops below 240), platforming that was much worse than that of DmC.
    Ugh.
I was promised a masterpiece but what I got was... definitely not one.
PS. Oh, and point of Devil Trigger in DmC is to make colored enemies colorless so that you can quickly dispose of them by whatever. It also pops Witches's shield

If you’re talking about economy of environment/color and environmental mechanics, then I would disagree or at least question if you understood the priorities of the original series.
In terms of economy of environment, the original series has always in one form or another been very interested or intentional about its gothic/feudal aesthetic a la its core inspiration. Yes 2 and 3 played with the idea, they nevertheless were grounded in that general atmosphere. DMC5 is the first to truly break away from that overt gothic sensibility (though it still retains its darker slightly desaturated tone), but even then it reminisces with the early series with its organic/bodily depiction of hell, which has always been a series through point. In terms of environmental mechanics, again the series has always been deliberate and focused about what it was first and foremost, a hack n slasher. The environment can effect this by the variance of narrow or fixed fields of view/movement, but in no terms were you meant to be playing super mario world or bionic commando in it. So in this sense I would say it is not that they never learned what you’re stating, it’s that they never were aiming for it to begin with. If you’re lucky maybe in DMC6 they might go more “lively” or super mario with it, so we’ll see if they learn from DmC, but considering the strong support for the original series given DMC5s market response I wouldn’t get my hopes up.

The biggest irony of this game is that it's story and characters is what kills it.
Dante now drinks alcohol, have some sex and others, things that the original creators would stir away from from what they would consider as 'cool'.
He's also insanely uncharismatic most of the time. It's almost like the VA sleepwalking as he voiced Dante. Adding him dropping insults and F-bombs certainly didn't helped either. Which makes every things he did sound half-ass.
Vergil and Mundus gets the biggest downgrades. They turned the cold, powerful, icy, calculative, cool, power-hungry Vergil into a freaking hacker anonymus redditor psycho. Vergil 1st introduced in DMC3 as this menacing opposing force that 1 shot a boss enemy that'll take Dante few minute to beat. In this game he's someone that wants to overthrow Mundus because of . . . . oppression i guess. And at the end he himself declared that only he deserved to rule over mankind. This happens after he botched a PoW trade by killing a defenseless powerless pregnant woman demon (yeah you do fight her before hand, but in this specific situation Vergil executes her at her weakest point and then executes her baby inside). And having Vergil wears Fedora, anime massive cloack while carrying his Katana CERTAINLY didn't helped her original image either.
Mundus's downgrade is somewhat worse. In the original DMC timeline, he's supposedly the strongest Demon around. You fought him while he's posing as a freaking Zeus's statue ffs, traveling through hell itself and it all done in 3 distinct unique level design. And because he's actually a challenging fight, he forces you to git gud.
Meanwhile this new Mundus is anything but great. He assumes a meak weak human, introduced to us having seggs with his uglyass wife, and even his method to rule the planet sounds lame af. Controlling the world through debts? Making a mind controlling Mt.Dew to control the masses? Freaking Fake News? Really? When you have a whole demon army at your disposal?

DmC: Devil May Cry has always been my favorite entry... until DMC5 came out. Now it shares the number 1 spot with DMC5.
Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition holds second place for me. I did find DMC3 to be better that DMC4 at first, but when the Special Edition of DMC4 included Lady and Trish as playable characters, the variety in combat that DMC4: Special Edition brought knocked DMC3 put of the second alot.
DMC3 is best on the Nintendo Switch. That is the version that has Style Switching. Makes that game sooooo much better! (I'm getting a Gaming PC soon. My understanding is that style switching is modded onto the PC version. So, I'll be playing that version from here on out instead.)
DMC1 is, in my opinion, trash.
    Or rather, it aged horribly.
I loved the game when it first came out. Definitely a game of it's time. But some 20 years later? Nah... it's trash to me. The combat is slow, choppy, and janky, the voice acting is hot garbage, the story is gourmet trash, and the graphics are trash, too. *To me.*
DMC2, the last on my list...
Also trash. But this one has three playable characters, the best-designed Devil Trigger for Dante, in my opinion, and the most powerful version of Trish that has been offered to us so far. None of that saves the game at all. But those do put the game on almost the same level as DMC1 for me.

I refer to it as edmc: El Donte May Cry Trailer Trash Edition, you know for the western audiences they were marketing to 😂
But in all seriousness DmC for people who’ve never touched the parent series is a more “inviting” prospect since its point of entry for the combat (the main mechanic) is high enough to not feel pandered to without being overwhelming. The overall skill ceiling, while not remotely as high as DMC4 onwards, is high enough to allow the variety and combing potential that most typical “western” character action (I never know what to call this genre) generally don’t attempt or just do poorly. In the right hands I would potentially equate it to DMC3s skill ceiling, maybe a little less. Also now that definitive edition is more or less the base version to play and fixing the inept mechanics of the OG release, it’s even more compelling for a beginner’s first at the genre.
If it didn’t carry the name I honestly think everyone would have been even more positive to it than they already are, well that and if the creators hadn’t been so pretentious about their story telling skills. I do however feel it is disingenuous to say “if you don’t let your expectations effect your experience” because it is the vantage point it used to market itself favorably to begin with, other games while not carrying the name of the series carried the spirit very well on their own; think Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge or Ghost Rider PS2. Considering these were both very early into the history of the genre, if their companies/developers kept working at it they could have made a far more compelling game/series at least in terms of mechanics than say God of War or other games of the like today.

this was genuinely a really nice video. i always find it interesting seeing a new comer jumping into the games and seeing what they think, especially if the reboot was their starting point, even if i.......lets just say ain't a fan XD i won't say it's a bad game, but i will say compared the others it's the mediocre one, while 4 has it's issues, it's core gameplay is so damn good i can keep coming back to it even after 5, the reboot.....not so much. if you're curious, and have time, a made an analysis, heads up, the opening has a lot of spite due to journos saying people only disliked the game for hair colour......i'm....i'm serious th-cam.com/video/uip0iJm_fTA/w-d-xo.html
