  • Today we'll be comparing the current M1 MacBook Air against the older Intel version. These two laptops are supposed to be one of the best options for a small travel ultrabook and while yes the M1 easily crushes the intel option, is the price difference really worth spending to upgrade?

It's almost criminal recommending an Intel over the M1 under _any_ circumstances.
You ought to also wrap in resale value at the end of ownership when I'm sure it'll be not only worth less, but practically impossible to sell.

The biggest drawback is that you have very limited options for having windows 10 on your macbook at the moment. The only viable option is paying a DaaS.

@@philippebaillargeon5204 And Microsoft will probably get really salty about offering Win 10 ARM licenses for Apple Silicon computers when they outperform their own Surface offerings.
MS can _say_ they'll be offering their own custom ARM chips, but it's a really long haul project building a CPU that can compete with Apple Silicon - and they really don't have any in-house silicon design expertise. If they're depending on Qualcomm, they may not even be trying considering how expensive advanced CPU design is and what a small market ARM-based PCs represent.
All of Qualcomm's recent efforts have been juggling placement of standard ARM designed cores on their SoCs (including the Cortex-X1).

Great video. As you said, for those that only do basic app tasks, the added power of the M1 probably isn’t necessary, but I would suggest that if saving money is the biggest concern, waiting for the M1’s to start hitting the refurb site would make more sense than buying the Intel version. Buying an Intel version at this point guarantees that the device will be obsolete in 3-4 years (even if it continues to work for more than that). And also as you mentioned, the battery life alone is a huge benefit to the M1 MBA, not to mention the fan-less and low heat characteristics just make the Intel Macs seem outdated already. My wife got a 13” MBP a couple of months ago from her work, and the thing runs so hot, even when she’s just doing basic tasks. It’s crazy how bad the thermal design of the Intel chips are.

    • @TheEverydayDad

Yeah the intel chips were fine when they were the only option on the market. But anymore its a real big stretch to still recommend them to someone.

I have a 2018 MacBook Air. It has 128GB of storage which I’ve nearly used up, plus the fact I’m starting uni in September so I kinda need more storage. I paid 1200 nearly for this in 2018 but I’m now thinking of upgrading to the M1 MacBook Air as it has a much faster chip, more base storage and will maybe do me better during the 5 years I’m studying. Is it worth it? The trade in price at Apple is 380 which is appalling so I’d sell it privately.

Hey, I have a quick question to ask. I'm currently a senior in high school and I need a new computer my freshman year of college next fall. I'm really set on getting the new macbook air. I know I want the 8 gb ram and the 512 gb ssd model, but what I don't know is if I should get the 7 core or 8 core gcu model?? Does that one core REALLY make a difference? I'd be doing light photo and video editing just for fun and as a photography minor, I'm majoring in marketing though so the workload for my major won't be super heavy on it. Just wanted to ask your opinion!! Thanks!

If you need higher computing power or a better display or longer lasting battery power then find out how much it would cost you to change your system. And then you have to decide if you are willing to invest the money. If you never had problems you are probably satisfied with your mashine. If so, why upgrade?

I got a basically brand new i5 air with 512gb about a month ago for like $500. Couldn't be happier. It was basically brand new too. Dude must've been mad because the m1 came out just a little over a month after he bought it.
Edit: also, I can't remember, but the there's something a little wonky going on with the thunderbolt ports on the m1. Could be wrong. And you can still use e-gpu on the intel version... for now. Can't wait for the newer generations of apple silicon.

I love MacOS BUT also need Windows. After mucking around M1, Parallels, etc I have settled with Intel MacBook Pro with dedicated graphics card. If you plan to use anything on windows, do yourself a favour and stay away from M1.
As such intel MacBooks are pretty fast for my use - Photoshop, Web, Etc.

The price difference in my region is too much. The Intel i3 version is $200 cheaper than the M1 version with 8 GB RAM & 256 GB SSD. That’s why i got the i3 version as my computer needs are very basic i.e. Watching Anime, Microsoft Office, etc.

I think no one should get intel Macs anymore, it would be like buying an iOS devices which can go up to iOS 9 now. basically intel devices will be ditched and Mac OS update will naturally be more heavy and have more features meant for apple chip Macs, while intel Macs will struggle to run those versions

    • @TheEverydayDad

Apple will give us $350 for the trade-in of the current laptop. I've looked at the M2 and M3 and I just do not see that the extra power is worth the cost.
