    Ian Cutress of AnandTech joins me to talk MacBook Air thermals! The new MacBook Air, an update the the 2018 redesign, got pretty good reviews when it came out a month ago. People liked the new keyboard, the new chipsets, and the lower price. But, there were a few criticisms as well. Basically, the still low-res webcam, some concerns about thermal throttling on the faster CPUs, and the battery life.
    Since then, I’ve had time to pound on the Magic keys, compare the web cam to pretty much everything else I have, really dig into the thermals, and there’s even been a macOS Catalina supplemental update.
    So, what if any difference does a month make?

    The Macbook Air 2020 with i5 - 16GB - 256GB configuration is AMAZING.
    As a developer it's like having a mac book pro without touch bar (i NEED f-keys).
    About thermals? They are better than what it's being told. Most reviews were hammering the device with software that's not intended to work on an air
    Yes you can do some video editing but as you should know, for that type of workload having discrete is better. So if you cut that out, THIS IS THE BEST MAC FOR EVERYBODY

    THANK YOU! I've had the i5 512GB MBA 2020 for a week now and it's been great for what I need it for. It hasn't overheated or had excessive fan use (i've only heard the fan go off once), and I average around 8-9h of battery for what I use it for. Do I expect to edit a ton of 4K video etc on this thing? No, cuz I would've bought the Pro for that. This serves my needs just fine, and the performance is snappy, the keyboard is solid, the screen is crisp and clear, and the sound is amazing. Everything you said in this video echoes my experience with the MBA 2020 i5 model.

    • @JayCatterson
      @JayCatterson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      dirt232323 I multitask a lot, like you said. Multiple tabs, word, excel, teams, google music running in the background, and this thing is still very snappy and doesn’t overheat or have excessive fan noise. The only time I hear fan noise is if I’m pushing the system, like editing RAW files or video on occasion. It still can do that, but it does take time. This is more for everyday work tasks that I mentioned above, not for media creation or heavy rendering. If your workflow involves those things, get the Pro (or even the iPad Pro).

    • @JayCatterson
      @JayCatterson 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Everything is sold out and are there even any great budget laptops under $400.

    Hello. My name is Joe Martinez. I just want to say, this was by far the most in-depth review on the 2020 MacBook Air. I have a mid 2010 13” MacBook Pro and it’s been a good laptop. But I realized I don’t need all the “pro” benefits because I am one of those casual users who only watches iTunes purchased movies, listen to music, do basic photo editing on Apple’s Photos app, email, web browsing, TH-cam videos. Also I feel I didn’t need to spend the extra $$$ for another Pro laptop if I’m not going to use those Pro features. Your video helped make that decision and understand the processors pros & cons. So I ordered my Air with the i5 option with 16 gig memory and 1T SSD for my large music & video library. Thanks you for this video review 🤓

    A lot of people have been saying that they have lots of issues with heat throttling in the MacBook Air, is this true? I’m a university student who uses Microsoft office and Spotify, I don’t game or edit videos. However some reviewers still reach 100c with these everyday tasks. I’m worried about the longevity of this laptop because I wanted to last at least four years and I want to know if this MacBook air is future proofed. Having the temperatures at above 90 all the time must not be good for the laptop?

    I am thinking of getting my first Macbook with the Air i3. Couple of questions, will I be able to effectively use microsoft Word, Excel etc consistently and have lots of tabs open on chrome/safari (if its better), watch the odd TH-cam video etc. Would I be better off with Microsoft Surface Laptop which is around £100 more for same ssd. How long will the laptop roughly last, hoping for at least 4 years. I don't game, maybe the odd card games or online games, I don't edit. The biggest thing is will having lots of tabs open slow down the laptop or make it heat up more often. Thanks in advance

    I just packed mine up to send back to Apple. Ordered the i7 / 16GB which could be the issue- but I run a lot of work in Chrome AND do a lot of online meetings (mostly Zoom) with up to 75 people online. The fan ran so loud and so long that it reminded me of the early XPS/ Surface units. Even with the Air placed well away from microphones, I had glitchy performance and enough noise that people were asking if I was running water. While I do NOT do traditionally heavy "pro" work- I am holding out and hoping for the new pro's. I see people advising processor suppression- which seems to defeat the purpose. Hoping for better news in May.

      Barry Goldberg I hope the 16GB works out for you. I have the i5 8GB RAM version, I’d have bought the 16GB RAM if I could shell out the cash. What’s worked for me on Zoom (and for you if you need it) is the program “Turbo Switcher” which lets you turn off turbo boost. Keeps it running quietly and cool

    hi, i have a question! i want to buy a macbook, but i just don’t know which one to go for. i want a macbook air (2018-2020) or a 13” macbook pro (2017-2019). i will be using it for basic stuff, like netflix, school etc; i also really want to play the sims 4 (though i did read quite some reviews where they weren’t to positive about ts4 on macbooks). i don’t edit that much videos and photos yet, but i would like to have lightroom and maybe i will do more in the future, i just don’t know yet. i will probably be going to university in 2-3 years so i would also like to still be able to use it there (but not extremely necessary), i would probably go for a more biology or technological study. i really hope you can help me! o also my budget is around 1500 bucks i think (1500 euros)

    I appreciate your review, but I have one question. I passed on the 2018 MBA because the screen seemed so washed out to me. Since you've put in some time using the 2020, how do you feel about the screen? Do you have any difficulty with the clarity or brightness? While the MBA has everything I need, if I can't clearly view the screen I may have to go with an entry level Pro. What are your thoughts?

    • @ReneRitchie
      @ReneRitchie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's the exact same screen as the 2018. Still lower brightness, still sRGB rather than DCI-P3 like just about every other Apple screen. I have no trouble seeing or using it, but I can tell it's not as bright and the gamut isn't as wide.

    As my exams will be online this year, I need to get a new Mac. Since 2015 i'm using the MacBook Air 11 inch with only 4GB/ 128GB. Can anyone help me out? I'm deciding between the Mac Book Air 13" 16GB/512GB and the Mac Book Pro 16GB/256GB - with this configuration they have the exact same price at 1575€. Which one to choose? I watched nearly 30 reviews but still don't know which one is the better option. Thanks so much in advance! :-)

    Hi. We are trying to decide which Mac to get. The most intense stuff we would be doing is creating movies with iMovie, mainly recorded teaching times that my wife is doing with zoom, and having hem recorded on the Mac. MBA okay or MBP? Can’t afford a new MBP and thinking about a 2015 MBP. Thanks.

  • @DanielMachulnyy

    Thanks for the level headed review! But I still haven’t been able to figure out if an i7 16gb 2020 MBA would fit my requirements or whether I fall into the “pro user” camp. I don’t need it for video editing or gaming but my typical day-to-day workflow requires several apps open (Outlook, MS Teams, WhatsApp, ClickUp, Safari with multiple tabs, a coupe Excel workbooks and Spotify) along with an occasional visual web page builder (like Wix, Squarespace and Divi) session on in Safari/ Chrome. I’m happy to spec the MBA with max specs but i wouldn’t want to buy something that will be struggling to keep up. The temp doesn’t bother me but overtly loud fans and sluggish perfomance do! Will the 2020 MBP be the right choice for me? Or is a top spec MBA enough to handle the multitasking?

      Daniel Machulnyy MBA i5 and 16gb ram will prob be enough . Although wait till MBP comes out and see how much the base model for that will cost compared to the air config I told you .

    Thanks for the insight on the MacBook Air! Good stuff. I understand it's not a device for professional use but I would like to use final cut pro occasionally to edit some family videos. I'm currently using iPad Air 2 and LumaFusion and it renders about 1:1 speed and has no issues scrubbing 2.7k videos. Would the Air perform similarly, better or worst?

    Great review, thx! Is there a difference in the build between the i3 base model and i5 higher end? I know there are in the MBP2020. Which did you test? the base with the optional i5 processor? Also, would you still recommend the i5 for someone who is using this for MS office suite, mainly outlook and excel? or will the i3 suffice. I'm currently running a 2013 MBP with a 2.6 ghz i5 dual core.. thx!

I will be doing basic stuff and using iMovie every now and then (which I could actually do on my phone instead), but I do want my computer to last for a number of years (at least 5 like my old 2014 Air which I'm now giving to a family member. Thanks for your reply as I really want to know what's the important of the RAM. Not a lot of people have talked about moving it to 16GB for the 2020 Air (only the processor). Thanks!

    Thank you for the informative and interesting videos. I’m currently considering to buy the i3 or the i5 MBA or to wait for the new base model of the MBP. As I prefer the aesthetics and light weight of the MBA and as the MBP might be a bit overkill for my relatively light workload the MBA might be the obvious choice. But as I also would like to be able to connect a 34 inch monitor to have multiple browser windows open side by side together with Spotify or a TH-cam video I would like to ask if you think if it will run very warm?

      Whiskey Scene I haven’t made a real choice so far. I think the choice comes down to a lower temperature or a faster experience in the long run. To stay away from heating issues the i3 might be the safest choice. But I must say that I couldn’t hear any fan noise when I used several (native) apps next to each other on the i5 in the Apple Store. Last week I experienced the 120hz full screen and Face ID of the iPad pro which was quite amazing. With better support for an external monitor (perhaps in ios 14) it might cover my needs as well. Anyhow I will wait to see how the Covid 19 crisis will affect my work before I’ll buy a new iPad or MacBook.

    Honestly, I think I’ll just stick with the iPad Pro experience. I was considering switching over to Mac. However, with the keyboard and cursor support now on the iPad, plus the fact that I do really like the iPadOS experience, I think that would just be best suiting for me personally to stay. I’ve already been working with the apps I need on iPadOS and I’ve been doing just fine. I love your videos, they’re very informative.
