This is the same movement we used as a kid trying to "skip" rocks at the lake. If you don't get the trailing shoulder down, elbow in, the rock won't skip.
That's right. Like a submarine style pitcher. Ben Hogan promoted that idea but in his book, the graphic was "side arm" which I think confuses people. Sidearm throwing is too horizontal of a shoulder plane.
Funny I’m really good at skipping rocks and throwing side arm/under arm but in the golf swing I like to throw my shoulder outside in at the golf ball. Will work with this in mind thanks
Very helpful and concise. I'm good on the backswing with my left shoulder, but this gives me a good routine to practice the right shoulder on the downswing ...no more thins, hopefully ...wish me luck! Thanks Alex x
Perfect video for me right now. “Shoulder line same as shaft line”. I like it 🤟🏼 I FINALLY got this working and thought I had it...ground-up downswing and all. The first move down feels like I’m pulling the shoulders down staying over my left knee THEN turning the hips left feeling like the right shoulder “hits” the ball. It’s soooo hard for us amateurs to not rush or overdo that first move but this will help!
Great video, good job in simplifying the down swing with shoulders. Was just figuring out how to use my shoulders in the downswing. This drove it home , perfect timing ! Thanks Elliot !
Excellent stuff, when i practise swinging this in the back yard the WHOOSH is much louder than the way I was doing it, which has to be a good sign for when I try it out on the range tomoz. And the shoulder line at impact being almost parallel with the shaft angle is a great swing thought! Thanks Alex!
Alex, this is another great lesson for me. It isolates on a part of the wall drill that I commented on yesterday that had helped me so much. And ironically just this morning before viewing I was working on this at the driving range. I could tell that the shorter clubs were so much easier to execute. I was working on transitioning to the longer clubs. Can’t wait to use the new visual/feel aid of the rod across my chest. As I left the practice area today I reflected that this was my best session ever as far as percentage of well struck shots. Very few not solid. Thank you again!
I’ve been having real trouble staying down and maintaining a proper spline angle through the swing. I tried many drills to improve but with no success. Well, I ran across this young man’s video, and OMG, things just clicked. What a great instructor. This young man has literally become my golf swing salvation, lol. Not only am I executing the swing better, I’m now swinging the club properly. It feels amazing. 😀
Took this and the other tips to the range today to help With my early extension tendencies - was amazing thanks !! Just got to get used to the set up ... that compression !!!!
This is the secret to hitting the ball solidly. I envision going to the top of my backswing with my pelvis sticking out (poor posture) and then sticking rear end out and squatting (good posture) as I transition to downswing. This move also gives you plenty of room to clear your hands. Great video.
Keeping right shoulder down at proper tilt angle with left hip out of the way is ket to compressing the ball with forward shaft lean. helps to get over the ball for solid strikes. Great video.
This is a hugely important concept and well explained. The idea of "hip turn" leads too many players to spin their hips which pitches the right shoulder out. Clearing the left side is not a spinning motion but an opening motion.
This is great! I just started doing this recently through trial and error, but did not have a clear mental picture of what i was actually doing right, more of a feeling. I just got into more of this position through backswing and contact because it felt better and performed well! Now i know i have been on the right track and will incorporate your drills into my irons as well. I was only hitting my 56 and 60 more like this, but not as exaggerated. Can’t wait to get into it with the longer irons. Thanks mate, great video! 🤜🏽🤛🏾
Thank-you for the great instructional videos. You are a great teacher and I owe you for the knowledge. I’ll check out your website and full TH-cam Chanel tomorrow!
One other note is that in the longer clubs as I get further away from the ball my shoulders tend to move to level. This gives a great way to work on that.
AlexElliottGolf I think a lot of golfer will be out of practice in bunkers as with the lock down and no rakes most of ours were GUR so the first time you need to play out of a bunker is the first comp I play a links course (Silloth on Solway) and the little pot bunkers are tricky even when your in good nick
Thanks for this video Alex. I was searching for exactly this subject. I see the motion in the video, but I think in my case the right shoulder comes around my sternum without my left shoulder moving out of the way at the same speed. Strange. Almost like I am rounding my shoulders at impact.
Excellent illustration! Thank you. A question: do I hold the wrist angles through impact? Or let the club swing/ flow through as my body turns ? Still comfused about this part/ sequence Thanks 🙏
I tried this as soon as I watched it, it felt totally foreign but the contact and the ball flight did the talking. When done right it looked like I was seeing under the ball as it went down the range. Thanks coach for this.
Thank you. First video of yours I’ve watched. Great way of teaching and I relate to your technique of teaching. Congratulations you have a new subscriber.
Alex, I learned a lot from this video, but would have liked to see with the driver!! Longest club in the bag, so angles a little different!! Thx, Craig Fleischer...
Hi Alex, thanks for the great videos. I get great contact with this move but my balls tend to go left. Any idea why? Also is this move help with power?
I tried this at the range the other day, was struggling to hit my 5 iron further than 160 yards, once I started to feel like I was getting my shoulder down I was making much more solid contact and added 30 yards on as I believe it helped me stay in posture more and I benefitted from the forward shaft lean. Should it feel like my right hand is applying pressure onto the back of the club when swinging down? thanks for the video by the way
@@AlexElliottGolf man....I wish you were in 🇺🇸 so you could be my instructor! If you ever come to Kentucky, let me know. We could tee it up at Valhalla and I could take you to some great distillery’s 🥃
So you feel this relationship of "shoulder tilt" and "shaft line" are a pretty consistent feel across all the clubs e.g. wedge to driver?. I understand that the shoulders are certainly flattening more as you move from the wedge to the driver, so it's more of a consistent feel of that relationship is my question. I do like the idea.
Such a strange feeling for me. I had a lesson yesterday and I was told similar things to increase my lower body rotation. If I use my arms, the ball goes right. When I rotate too hard, ball goes left. Other times I feel like I’m going to fall on my face lol. Also feels like I won’t have power because I lost my whip/casting that makes me “feel” powerful, but really isn’t. Just need to keep working to work it into muscle memory; because it sure is foreign. Very tough to do for us who’ve been early extending all these years !
Thank you for tuning in! Please like, comment and share this video if you are loving the tips! Thank you
The best illustration of how the trail shoulder works with the golf club that I have come across.
Fantastic video, this right shoulder move is a game changer for me. Crisp contact, better ball flight and more ball speed. Thanks for posting 😊
The most underrated move! This a key in the chain of the swing!
After watching this video - i parred the first 9 at vista bella in Spain yesterday - playing off 12
Brilliant!
Best explanation of the right shoulder move and the best demonstration of how to do it I've ever seen. Tks man.
Great imagery (@ 6:31) to help maintain proper posture through impact! Thanks
Thanks Alex, you and shields are my
Coaches. I appreciate you very much.
Thanks mat! Appreciate it

this makes so much sense to me. will definitely be working on this drill.

This is just what I needed - thanks Alex

Hello Dave!
Great to hear you like the video - report back when you have a few practice sessions. I would love to hear how your getting on
Great Video Alex, very helpful, thanks John
Alex, great drill and haven't seen it explained that way and has helped me tremendously.
Great tip, always an issue of the shoulder feeling over the top, that explains it perfectly
I started doing this very thing about 4 months ago and it made a huge difference with my strike.
Great lesson!!! 👍
Great video, good job in simplifying the down swing with shoulders. Was just figuring out how to use my shoulders in the downswing. This drove it home , perfect timing ! Thanks Elliot !
Turned my game around doing this , thank you 👍🏻
Proper shoulder movement eliminates early extension immediately. It also gets your hips open to the target with out even trying. Great stuff Alex!
Great video, super helpful drills. I am brand new to the game.
Excellent... Now to get into your shape... Thanks

Feelings are really KEY for me. Simplicity is also key. Thanks for this one. Cannot wait to get to work today.

New subscriber and thoroughly enjoying the instructions
Hello David! Thank you so much. I hope you see some great improvements in your game. Thank you for subscribing
Superb video Thankyou so much. Very clear and ball striking is much more solid now 👍
Great video. My coach has me working on something similar. Thanks.
I tried this today, works great, one of you best lessons ever.

Nice one, Alex 👍 Had Lesson yesterday as have slight over the top move so these drills are great.

Great job as always, Alex, thanks a bunch
Very good teacher

Just WOW ! Thank you !
That was a super video Alex 👍👍👍👍
Great video! You nailed my downswing tendencies - going to range today to give this a go. Thanks
Shoulder to the wall, shoulder to the ball, shoulder to the target. Chuck Cook
Exactly what I needed right now! Thanks.
You are the best. Such simple and targeted advice. I can totally relate to this. Thank you AE.
You are welcome!!
Thank you thank you from France !!! 😉
Hello from Manchester
Thanks Alex. I struggle to do this which is why I am so inconsistent.
Good vid. This IS my problem. I know it, I try to get rid of the over the top. But no matter what, still come over it. I'll try this. Thanks!
Great explanation to a big problem of mine, been working on it as I know its an issue but this little drill will help 100%
Great instruction. Tried this today and straightened my blocks and pushes with baby draws.
Nice way to keep your swing playing and throw the club toward the target it ensures a straight shot to the target well done

brillaint work peter! Sounds like you are doing really well, keep up the work and hope my tips can continue to help you
Appreciate it! Psyched I found your profile. Peoples comments say it all. Excited to get going on some your drills and tips asap!
Great drill… and one I think that can apply to anyone’s swing
Hey Alex, I always appreciate your approach, if in San Diego ever, stop by Foresight Sports!
That was excellent.
Wow great explanation

thank you! Merry christmas to you from manchester 🇬🇧 🎄
Nice will try down the range later 👍
Great tips
Good stuff, eliminating handle raising is a great improvement in technique , thanks.
M
Well explained thanks.
Brilliant feel
Thank you so much brilliant hope I can remember this
give it a save and you can use it as a reference point for when you are practicing ! hope it helps
Nice once..thanx Alex! 🇲🇾
Great in swing positions BUT what muscles are you thinking of and how your power/speed are delivered - thanks 😎
Great feeling thx.
Thank you brilliant
One other note is that in the longer clubs as I get further away from the ball my shoulders tend to move to level. This gives a great way to work on that.
Same problem! Perfect explanation to sort us out👍
Thanks Alex! Great vid. That helps me a lot. Being an over the top swinger I think this portion of the game is widely misunderstood.
You really hit the nail on the head with this lesson! Very good, Subscribed.
thank you
Saturday mate when I scored 40 stableford points (could have been better but had a bit of bunker trouble)
Not bad! I have a few bunker videos if you want to check them out
AlexElliottGolf I think a lot of golfer will be out of practice in bunkers as with the lock down and no rakes most of ours were GUR so the first time you need to play out of a bunker is the first comp I play a links course (Silloth on Solway) and the little pot bunkers are tricky even when your in good nick

4:35..the sound of perfection
Exactly how far the the alignment stick is placed in front of your right foot?
Thank you
Excellent illustration! Thank you.
A question: do I hold the wrist angles through impact? Or let the club swing/ flow through as my body turns ? Still comfused about this part/ sequence
Thanks 🙏
let the club swing with the body! I hope this makes sense. Let me know if you need anything
Good move.
I tried this as soon as I watched it, it felt totally foreign but the contact and the ball flight did the talking. When done right it looked like I was seeing under the ball as it went down the range. Thanks coach for this.
You are welcome!
Yes it works
any other drills to instill this ?
Thank you. First video of yours I’ve watched. Great way of teaching and I relate to your technique of teaching. Congratulations you have a new subscriber.
thank you karl!!
So basically, you aim your right shoulder at the golf ball as you go through your down swing. I need to work on this. Good tip.
Do ai need to chip and pitch same way?
Alex, I learned a lot from this video, but would have liked to see with the driver!! Longest club in the bag, so angles a little different!! Thx, Craig Fleischer...
yeah! good point to be fair thank you
Hi Alex, thanks for the great videos. I get great contact with this move but my balls tend to go left. Any idea why? Also is this move help with power?
perhaps you should look at rotation or grip? I am releasing a video this evening on grip i think this is well worth a watch
Do you think teeing off up against the "tee" marker, kinda to force keeping your hands in ?
Yeah!
What is the thing holding the noodle and where can I get one? Thanks Alex!
amazon!
..just down from the baked beans mate
Great tip. Surprised you don't have a wireless mic for better sound quality...
I have just got one, previously had one and broke, costing me a small fortune getting this audio right haha
How about downswing start with leg or shoulder?
I tried this at the range the other day, was struggling to hit my 5 iron further than 160 yards, once I started to feel like I was getting my shoulder down I was making much more solid contact and added 30 yards on as I believe it helped me stay in posture more and I benefitted from the forward shaft lean. Yes
Hi Alex, what course are you teaching from ?
Mottram hall!
When you hit these shots are your hands in front of or level with the ball at impact? Does it differ between a short pitch and a full iron shot?
Infront, i have loads more tips on irons shots that will be useful
Do you move your shoulders on that same plane for all clubs? Or is it different for long irons/woods/driver? Please help!
Hi, no different with long irons
@@AlexElliottGolf man....I wish you were in 🇺🇸 so you could be my instructor! If you ever come to Kentucky, let me know. We could tee it up at Valhalla and I could take you to some great distillery’s 🥃
Thanks for a reminder to keeping it simple wedge swing goes right to driver Same swing just let it happen
I think Nieman pro does very obvious this way down right shoulder with head in downswing.
Great
Did he say platform 9-3/4.
This is a great drill. My 9 iron went from 110 yards to a 140 yards. Problem is when I get to my five iron it just falls of a cliff for me.
Such a strange feeling for me. I had a lesson yesterday and I was told similar things to increase my lower body rotation. If I use my arms, the ball goes right. Very tough to do for us who’ve been early extending all these years !
This is so true and it’s really hard to nail!!
so you're leading with the legs and hips?
yes
