    Hi I have been following this instruction for the past 4 months. My ball striking has improved vastly. It's not my opinion but my playing partners who can't believe the improvement in accuracy and distance. My distance has improved by about 5%. Doesn't sound a lot but my 8 iron has improved by 10 yards. 150-155 for a 63 year old isn't bad. Really delighted i found this sight. Keep up the good videos. Thank you

    I spent a few hours on the range the other day. Got frustrated and started for home. Then, I noticed a friend at the members range on the other side. He told me about this video. But more importantly, he showed me how to do those drills. I immediately started hitting the ball better. It was a real eye opener. Thank you!!!

    Thank you for this video. I reworked my back-swing starting about 2 years ago - I had gotten across the line at the top and I changed to a more laid-off position. Ever since I have struggled wit my down-swing. I tried making a "40-55" shoulder turn and I've finally started to make more consistent swings. This one thought has improved my down-swing path.

    The bit about angles of shoulders is gold. I have been working hard on turning the shoulders and been practising with the club/practice sticks across the shoulders but never seen the actual angles before. I am 59 and I am now hitting the ball further and straight than when I was 22. Tks

    Hi Craig, thank you for this great insight and illustration. I noticed the same concept would apply for longer clubs/drivers, the pros seem to have this "steeper" shoulder angle compared with amateurs, and is just as critical. But is the angle generally shallower for drivers compared with irons? Do you perhaps have any information related to that? Thanks again for the awesome video!

    Golf Magazine did this exact same thing in a three part series of December 1996. It was called "You Vs "It". Once a scratch player, I was losing my game and about to quite. I could no longer hit the ball straight at age 55 This and a lot of work on the range brought me back. Page 28, "The Science Of The Swing" by Micheal McTeigue. He hooked his computer device up to 150 pros and a whole bunch of amateurs. Then a very skilled artist detailed the differences which were many. Basically they detailed what is known as "The Modern Golf Swing". And it works. I credit Curtis Strange and Jimmy Ballard for all this. When Strange won back to back U.S. Opens with a whole new and different swing it started the new era away from the old Casper, Nicklaus, and Miller lateral hip slide. It is also the father of the "connected" swing.

      Very interesting 👍 thanks for sharing

    • @grahamjones7371
      @grahamjones7371 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally i have found the hard way,that"connection" is an illusion caused by good sequencing.
      Im sure Ballard was a great and influential teacher but i must have read his book wrong! i gave it away!as i ended up with a laboured overconnected heaving sway! But connection ie stuffing things under armpits! can instantly improve a bad players short game and for that im grateful.

    • @mesillahills
      @mesillahills ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grahamjones7371 Sorry.... Good sequencing is "timing" and it never is reliable. "Connection" is exactly the opposite and that is why it bears that name. The arms and shoulders are "connected" to the body and this eliminates most timing. It is how you hit the ball straight most of the time. Establishing and maintaining "connection" is very hard to do. This is why many touring pros today take the club back part way one time before hitting the ball. They are assuring themselves that they will begin the swing with muscles located just above their belt line, not their shoulders and arms. The first six inches of take-away is extremely critical in this regard just as Nicklaus insisted all of his life, but never explained why. You can never recover from a "snatched" take away in that first 3 to 4 inches or so. It is all timing from there as no connection was established. This is also why every touring pro says to keep your hands centered to your chest.

    • @grahamjones7371
      @grahamjones7371 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mesillahills I agree with what you say here but its not achieved by gluing (ie sticking stuff under armpits) your arms to your body.Its done with athletic anticipation just like in every other sport youve been good at! Its just a lot harder in golf as youre not moving. ie the ball and you are stationary.
      AA is using the ground to get your big muscles moving milliseconds b4 your arms.Timing is the secret of all sports its just that in most our lowerbody is already moving in anticipation and/or a ball is coming at us and in anticipation we are moving into position/creating space for our arms to strike, moving our big muscles early.

    • @grahamjones7371
      @grahamjones7371 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mesillahills My attempt to show the difference between athletic anticipation.sequencing/connection and stuffing things under armpits.To simplify everything below the bottom rib is connected to/loads/works against the ground and using athletic anticipation starts milliseconds first.Everything above the chest is connected to/loads/works against the handle/club,the sequencing in this strike triangle starts milliseconds first in the muscles connected to the shoulders and flows down the arms to the hands, whilst as ballard states maintaining the triangle.Golf is like rubbing your stomach and patting your head! Hard to do but achievable!

      Very true about the set up. Unfortunately people think it’s boring that’s really spot on.
      Unfortunately on TH-cam the videos need certain titles. Lots of clips. A certain type of style and language and topic to keep the viewers engaged.
      This is where videos like the address position completely flop. They don’t hold the viewers attention. Poor watch time means = No views. No views means it doesn’t cover the cost of editing and time and it actually costs money to make.
      That’s why I put together WorldClassGolf.com that’s got everything in there 1300 videos.

      If like me you are mad enough to want to set up and strike it like a tour pro! (this requires athletic/sporting ability) Two huge reasons why you will find this simple set up so hard to do!
      1 You will feel like your dominant right eye can't look at the ball and is looking way behind it
      2 you will feel like your body is totally blocking moving the club back!
      So use Athletic Anticipation from the ground up and create space.

    Dont see what causes the angle of shoulder decent to increase from 41 to 54. Some of the video you show it looks like the spine angle has actually gone slightly vertical. So how is the shoulder angle steepening when the spine angle in going the opposite direction?

    • @CraigHansonGolf

      Why can’t we steepen the shoulders just by steepening them?

    It isn’t tilt \ or turn but rather side bending of the spine ) which changes the shoulder angle of good ball strikers. I discovered this by putting myself into the position of the pros at the point the ball leaves the face of the club and have taught others by starting them out doing the same thing. The only way to get into that position is with side bend.
    After starting there and then going in reverse up to the top and back down again one realizes the biomechanics are the same as when tossing a rock side arm across a pond. If side bend is started progressively at the top of the backswing it drops the hands in a circle down and forward and tucks the trail arm into the the side and also causes a reflexive lateral shift of the hips to target - the subconscious brain’s intuitive solution for staying in balance over the feet as the upper body mass shifts backwards is to send the mass of the middle and lower body forward.
    Why don’t golfers side bend intuitively? In my case at a beginner it was reading and hearing advice about not swaying the hips and maintaining spine angle which I interpreted as meaning keeping it straight. Everyone I’ve coached by first posing them at the ball release position then moving them backwards up to the top and back down improved their swings dramatically in about 10 minutes which is why that method probably isn’t taught by anyone trying to make a living teaching golf. 😂

    • @grahamjones7371
      @grahamjones7371 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see why you use the tossing a rock analogy but its closer to a low topspin baseball pitch as to skim a rock you release palm up.

    • @TeddyCavachon
      @TeddyCavachon ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grahamjones7371 What you say is true, but analogies only work if the target audience is familiar with the analog action. In practice what I have people I coach do is throw golf balls at the ground just in front of them at a downward angle. The reason for having them doing the exercise isn’t the arm action, it is the fact they are not side bending in their downswings. Asked why they didn’t after doing the drill the answer is along the lines of thinking “maintain spine angle during the swing” means keep spine straight in all directions.

    My question is: these numbers should change with club choice. I imagine driver would be the flattest of the bunch. do you have numbers for the driver? I would be curious to know what the average is for the 550 pros with their drivers. I looked at my numbers with a 3-wood and I go 30 to 42.

    I noticed that you take your trail thumb off the club just before takeaway. Is that something that we need to do?

  • @dtgps
    @dtgps ปีที่แล้ว

    Hips and head counter balance humans subconsciously in the coronal plane. During the swing the weight of arms and golf club swinging create a force that our subconscious balance system adjusts for by hips moving away from the ball and head moving down as a result of hip movement. This explains why at impact the head of great golfers is about 7 inches closer to the ground than at address.... so of course shoulder angle is steeper as head lowers during the DS..

    • @dtgps
      @dtgps ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately most golf instruction is ignorant of autonomic systems of the body/mind and the golfers is lead to believe these are consciously initiated and consciously controlled movements... wrong.

      If I could start again I’d have a stronger grip. Some things are not possible to change after a certain point

    I hear what you are saying Craig about the left knee, But unfortunately some golfers force that left knee to bend before they have even started their back swing - the left knee should bend automatically after the extension of the back swing (arms) the golf swing is like a spring gate - what moves first - comes back/down last - simple yeah - well many can't achieve this and this is why there are so many amateur golfers! I tell myself - hips before my tits - it works - if I remember - I am 72 come next September! Cheers Craig!
