  • We compare the new Nikon Z8 with the Sony a7R V and Canon EOS R5. There are several factors to consider, the Nikon Z8 is the latest contender, the R5 is the oldest, and Sony's a7R V has the highest megapixels. With everything to take into count, it's a tough decision. Hopefully, we shed some light on what camera you should buy.

It took me a bit to learn all of the AF customization on the R5. Specifically, the Servo “Cases” which are essentially editable presets for fine tuning tracking sensitivity and predictive acceleration and deceleration of tracked subjects. Made a huge difference for me in tracking fast and difficult subjects.

Basically the Z8 performed poorly in the initial moving subject AF test, so what we did is did it again and got better results. I wish I could pull back my wedding clients a week later and do the same.
Stating that you think it's a fair test is a bit of a joke and shows a clear bias. The Z8 is a fantastic camera, however if the results don't work in your favour then maybe think twice about posting this comparison
Also staying that quantity is better than quality literally goes against what every serious and professional photographer would suggest. Actually cannot believe this video passed QC

So true. I liked the video until the retest and this is extremely weird. The test for Nikon failed, so the camera was not failing, it was the test. If the performance of Canon was bad this time, then they should have giving all brands a retest or none and then Nikon has lost.

I'm a 69 year-old hobbyist shooter with shaky hands and failing eyesight. I enjoy my A7RV very much because of its IBIS and AF systems. It should be a camera that I'll enjoy for years to come. We can't switch every time a manufacturer comes out with the newest and most advanced camera. We'd have to switch every, what, 6 months or a year or so? Nah!

My main system is a Nikon Z8 and I love it, but I also have an R5 system. Both systems are great for different reasons. Canon is a much simpler system to operate, with a core of very competent L series zooms with image stabilization. Nikon has always had better lenses, both primes and zooms. The philosophy of the companies are different. If I were doing weddings, I would use the R5 with 3 zoom trinity and an R6 as a back up. For travel, a Z6 II with 24-200 and 14-30 are all you really need. While I currently do not have Sony gear, some of my best photos were shot on APSC Sony cameras. My point is, everything is good in its own way, but carrying it is the real challenge as you get older.

Frankly, all three of these cameras are more than capable. Personally, I would pay more attention to camera ergonomics and lens selection for a given mount. If you are new to photography, I would rent each system for a few weeks and determine which one you like the most. A simple 30 min evaluation in a camera store is not enough time. Just FYI I use both Canon and Nikon and enjoy both systems.

Now that the Nikon Bodies have arrived (Z8/9) and the upcoming Z6/7III, it is all Nikon from here. They finally have the bodies to go with the vastly and obviously superior lens lineup and Z mount. Nikon's future is getting brighter by the month - if they could only get a grip on the recent recalls (not so good). Hopefully this is temporary.

Hahaha superior lens lineup and obviously Nikon. Clearly a fanboy who just believes the hype. Hahaha.

    • @photographydiscourse1185
      @photographydiscourse1185 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@BucNasty32 Nope - used them all. I'm not saying every Nikon Z lens is better than its competition, but as a body of lenses they are the best - most consistent across the range of lenses in terms of build quality, focus breathing suppression (not in body, but actually due to lens design), quiet AF and of course IQ.
There are examples here and there of competitors lenses that are competitive - but not that many in terms of all the categories above.
As far as being a fan boy goes - I've been shooting over 30 years and know photography and what I am talking about. None of this is to say that you cannot "get the shot" with any of the modern systems and lenses because you definitively can if you know what you are doing - they are all great as compared to what were were using in the past. Still, there are facts and facts are stubborn things:
Fact 1: From a physics perspective the Z mount is the best (55mm diameter and 16mm flange) - Sony E mount is 48mm (very narrow) by 18mm flange and Canon RF is 54mm diameter by 20mm flange. These are facts not opinion, and these facts have meaning.
It means that the angle of incidence is superior on the Z mount than the other mounts - this is not a disputed opinion but fact. This fact means that the engineers can go much farther with optical design than with the restraints of inferior mounts - this is fact and not disputed - look up angle of incidence and optics if you are uninformed.
Fact 2: Canon RF lenses are generally more noisy when they focus - by comparison to Nikon Z lenses - this is a fact. The same is true with build quality - just hold and use the 50mm 1.2 or 85mm 1.2 from both systems and it is apparent. Again, all of these lenses are great but the Nikons are better built - factual.
As far as Sony, there are so many lenses from different manufacturers for the E mount that there are of course some that are built very well and many that are not.
I could go on and on with examples but there is no need - if you have used all the systems you know and if you have not then you just don't, but the remarks about the Z mount superiority is a fact of physics and not an opinion.
Again, a good (or even average) photographer can do well with any of the systems as they are all great as compared to anything that existed in the past - even the fairly recent past.
I hope this clears things up as to what I was saying.

I'd say Nikon is more in competition with Canon and now Panasonic with it's phase detect as all three offer more similar ergonomics and appeal closer that that traditional user base. Interesting to see how the Panasonic S2H will stack up as it will probably be 8k and offer very good AF and can be a serious photography tool.
Sony is more in it's own space as it's the most different. Closer to a gadget and offers superior AI. If you like Sony ergonomics it's hard to switch even if something like the Z8 has a many things better on paper.

We shot a wedding in June with two Canon R5's. My wife's back and shoulders hurt for five days later. We decided to switch all our Canon gear for Nikon, including my beloved R3. Now, I am pondering a return to Canon, stay with Nikon, or migrate to Sony. Before we do anything, I thought I would reach out to you and ask which manufacturer produces the sharpest and lightest lenses. My wife will likely just use primes. I will use primes, 24-70, 70-200, and something longer for bird photography. Currently, we are using a 50MM, 85MM, 24-70, 70-200, and a 600 PF. They are all Z-mount lenses.
Relative to autofocus, I noticed with my Z9 that it shows that I captured the eye. However, in post professing I found that accuracy was not as good as with my old R3 or R5, for that matter. Which manufacturers have the most accurate eye-AF and make the sharpest and lightest mirrorless lenses today?
I will likely explore Leica after the new SL3 is released. I am hoping that by adding phase detection or becoming a hybrid AF system that they will compete with Canon and Sony for the most accurate eye-AF. If that happens and they retain their dynamic range and colors straight out of camera like the SL2, Leica will introduce a powerhouse entry into the market.

Z8 is the latest and greatest... potentially and it has a stacked sensor compared to the other 2. The R5 is like... 3yrs old now? So, it doing not so well is expected especially for AF and btw, the R5 is also like nearly USD500-750 cheaper in most places compared to the other 2.
Just one more comment, why on earth do all the TH-cam videos do AF tests for moving subjects shooting in a way that no sane photographer would ever do it? If I was shooting someone dodging in and out of something, I would *never* have held the camera stationary like on a tripod and would likely never shoot someone like that using a wide-angle lens this way. Hand-hold it, grab 50-85mm and try to keep the person in frame; that would be a better test for actual use of the AF.
Also, do it in low-light or changing light conditions as well, well-lit & evenly lit situations tend to be much easier for the AF systems.
What about situations where there are crowds? Try tracking one person in a crowd and see how the AF does. I know of several brands of cameras that completely loses it when tracking anyone anywhere in a crowd. 😛

Dear, thank you very much for the excellent video; I have a dilemma to solve, I will soon buy new equipment to photograph. I owned a Canon DSLR but upon returning from Africa I made the decision to change everything, considering quality and especially the weight to carry. So I sold everything and am looking at options.
This video helped eliminate Sony because I really love photographing wildlife and it didn't do well in that area; but the doubt persists between Nikon and Canon. Canon is expected to make new and important releases soon and expectations are high. But Nikon still has the advantage that its lenses are more accessible, including from third-party manufacturers.
And now? which one should I buy? Help!!!

Ironically, I think the AF performance of the much cheaper R6 Mark II would have made all these cameras look overpriced. So Nikon has done a very good job with their mount adapters for old glass. so you will get all the tracking and AI, just the speed may be an issue depending on what lenses you are using. Then once you get the newer glass you'll see even better results. • @dct124
    @dct124 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Only problem with Canon, is it's not technically real Raw. If you're going into this for video you buy the Nikon. If you're going into this for autofocus you grab the Canon. The reason I still don't recommend Sony is due to the manufacturer purposely under exposing its ISO. When compare actual light levels instead of the number on the screen, Sony lags behind with color shift and noise. The only saving grace for Sony is its eye AF. It's still not perfect and each of them has a hit rate of 9/10.
If you know what TicoRaw is, then you know the Z8 is the better option.
That being said, lens choice is really the main reason to choose one over the other unless you're shooting video professionally. You can use every lens nearly on the planet with the Nikon Z mount including Canon and Sony cinema line. For whatever reason Canon is now a closed system.
    Z8 > R5 > A7Rv (in that order)
