For sports would love this Z8 for sports and landscape. The Sony terrible for sports. Love my R5 as all around cam, and it's now $3k refurbished from Canon. Does the Z8 have an anti-aliasing filter?
I am a hobbyist that mostly shoots on hikes, I have had the R5 since release and have nothing but good things to say about it. Jared is absolutely correct that landscapes are beautiful on this camera and I have had a few printed on acrylic and metal large format pictures, they are stunning and it does not disappoint the pixel peepers. The video is borderline unusable because of the rolling shutter unless you basically have no movement. I don't really record on it so its not a issue for me.
I have the Z8 but have been using the z6ii for a year. I love the z6ii. I do not love the z8 yet. The AF is great but it makes composition easier rather than improving my keeper rate when it comes to static subjects (wildlife). Far better for birds in flight though...... You work with what you've got.
Missed a very notable spec when talking about viewfinders/LCDs. The Z8 has blackout-free (pause-free) shooting. No blackouts and no slideshows when shooting in burst modes. IMO this was huge for me when I first saw it on the Z9 and I'm happy to see it on the Z8 as well. It's a completely new and kind of surreal experience when shooting stills.
I’m with you Joe. A really big feature of Nikon Z8/Z9. Absolutely no blackout that I didn’t even notice shooting my D850. Results, in real time bird inflight view, which is a game changer in getting the shot. No more having the bird flying out of my shot because of the lag (unless I’m not fast enough). Also, the no lag start up that Jerod mention. I’ve gotten so many key moment shots because of this.
There is a single fast frame of blackout when shooting with automatic flicker detection. The camera will take the smallest pause to sync with the flicker rate and then continue the blackout free shooting. Its negligible but confused me as to why my Z8 was doing a single black frame every burst and I had to dig through menus till it stopped.
So true. Switching to the Z9 from the D5/D6 was so much easier given the "near optical" quality of the EVF. So much is made of its lower resolution as compared to the R3 and the A1 (and others) but to me it looks very similar to an OVF.
You realize Sony had a blackout free EVF in their first A9 (not to mention every other stacked sensor camera they produced afterwards back in 2017), right? I wouldnt exactly call it a completely new experience unless you are a nikon shooter.
@@TomRupp Yes, that’s right. But when I was shooting Nikon D750, I really liked it. With Sony I don’t get the same feelings. Like the spectacular GM lenses though.
I use Canon for daytime and Nikon for night and deep space photography. I start to think that I may very soon switch to the dark side completely. New Nikons are so impressive!
All 3 are great cameras. For my $$ I’d go with the Nikon. It’s the best all around camera of the 3 with the cannon coming in a close 2nd. As you said earlier, you can’t go wrong with any of them.
Love my Nikon Z8. The new autofocus helps me sooooo much better at events than my Z6ii did. Definitely worth it, especially with its video specs and stacked sensor.
@@tucompaivan night and day. I have the Z6ii, Z7ii, and now the Z8. 3D tracking works very well. The hand-off technique between Wide AF and 3D works great for tracking fast moving subjects. Keeping the Z6ii and Z7ii for landscapes and Astro. My Z8 now is the all-rounder.
@@tucompaivan A6400 is the world fastest focus camera ... however nikon z8 is the best in all segment ! It's the best camera currently .image quality of nikon processing is insane .. when you pixel peep you can find difference the detailed vs. R5 . Nikon problem is they don't feed you tubers and their advertising and marketing I not that strong like canon and sony.. last 50 years no 1 was nikon . And it took its throne with this z8 .
So many considerations that we are blessed to have so many choices. I would add that the Z8 is already going to be getting Auto Capture in a future firmware. The Z9 has had 4 major firmware updates since the launch 18 months ago. We can expect the Z8 will be even better in 12 months time than it is today.
Coming from the Fuji X-H2, I just bought the Z8 and pre-ordered the 180-600mm yesterday. Canon has the excellent R5, but no affordable 600mm option, Sony has the excellent 200-600mm, but no camera with both a high burst rate and high resolution at this price-point. Out of nowhere, within a couple of weeks, Nikon has both and just became the most attractive system of the three, for my personal needs.
All are great! If you don’t get good images it’s you. For me, I have too much Canon glass to switch. I love the ergonomics of the R5. The programmable buttons and Custom modes allows you to program the camera to your liking for different shooting conditions. Birding or Events. The quality of the images and color are great!
As hobbyist photographer, I can't justify the cost of any of these cameras. So for me Canon and Sony currently have the best camera offering for us hobbyist photographer. Nikon is still behind when it comes to mid-range and APSC cameras.
Well as a hobyist it kinda sucks that canon has no third party lenses to support their mid tier camera (full frame and apsc). I'm hoping for a Nikon z80 or something because the z30 isn't future proof. Sony is the king at around 1-2k price point .
I've been a Sony fan-boii for the last 6 years or so. The A7RV was an incredible upgrade, in my opinion. I've been beyond happy with it the last month or so. I came from the A7RIV and A7IV before it, and the A7RII before that. The improvements Sony has made in the last few years are incredible.
What an embarrassment of riches across all three of these companies. Some quirks amongst all three companies but between the bodies and lens ecosystems, really can’t go wrong with any of them. Nice comparison Jared, appreciate the work you, Stephen and team put into these!
You can run the Z8 off the USB-C PD port. I had the camera on for 12 hours straight shooting a short film with a small 10,000mAh power bank. Didnt have to change the battery and the battery indicator was reading full charge all day. You're right about the Z8 files vs R5. Not sure if Canon actually applies a small amount of sharpening but the Z8 files CAN be as clean as the Canon's. It takes 1 minute in Resolve to do so, but it doesnt change the fact that right out of camera the Canon's are a tad better.
I'd say that the Z8 actually has the best mount, because besides the native options, any other lens can be adapted to it, and there's a pretty good E-mount adapter for it as well.
@@bertnase9933 Well, adapted lenses probably don’t have the best AF performance. Having said that, what I’ve seen from the E-mount adapter is that it’s still pretty good.
I do a good amount of video work with the Z9. The 4K off that camera is excellent. You can basically do work with any of these cameras. I had the A7RIV and honestly hated that so I can't see myself getting an RV since I got rid of my Sony ecosystem any way. I kind of think the Z8's the best bang for buck camera, but that's just me personally.
I had Sony too and never enjoyed to use them. I tried Nikon and I felt in home, so I stayed with Nikon. I haven't tried new Canon cameras but I have good memories about Canon DSLRs.
@@amermeleitor I also really do not care about the digital hotshoe Jared talks about all that much. He's not really a flash/strobe person. Once you have a plastic footed trigger break in that hotshoe and halt a shoot while an assistant goes out and buys another one you'll never want to deal with it again.
The Nikon Z8 has an amazing spec spreadsheet and if it goes the way of it's big sibling, will be future proof due to several firmware updates in the pipeline. Not to mention superb Z glass!!!
I've been shooting with the z9 since launch. Shot about 45 weddings with it. Just added the z8 as my second camera and couldn't be happier. Can't just breeze by the fact that both cameras have blackout free shooting. Nikon has truly built two incredible cameras. Sony build quality just didn't sit right compared to the Nikon builds. I'd rather have a heavier camera that can be put through the paces.
@@Louie_Vision it’s been great! Just a better overall experience. So many of the reviews I see talk about these cameras for sports. I know so many wedding photographers using z9 and now z8 for weddings. The instant boot up on these cameras is a must in the wedding world. So many great things I could say. Coming from someone who has shot with all the flagship cameras.
@@ChaseMoreLight That's what I've been seeing also. I'm a wedding photographer and waiting for my z8 to come in. The reason I really want this camera is for hybrid use. Mainly for photos but also to be able to make short reels for Instagram. Do you have a IG to check out your work?
In the end it depends on which glass you're getting for what you intend to do. I'm most amazed how the Canon EOS R5 from 2020 is still being compared to models from 2022 - 2023. Anyway, all good stuff. R5 for me, for that flip LCD screen and whatever it has to offer.
I find it interesting how people complain that the Z8 is too big and the Sony's are nice and small. Yet so many Sony shooters like myself, add grip extenders to their bodies. To make them bigger and better to handle. The grip extender on my A7IV from small rig is around 90 g, making the weight and size of the camera much closer to the Z8.
Nikon all the way at this point. I now own the Z 9. Used to have an R5 and A7RIII. I just prefer the controls of the Nikon bodies as well as Nikkor lenses. Also love that the Z 9 (and Z 8) are designed to be shutterless and, thus, are essentially devoid of the compromises typically associated with electronic shutters. The AF? None are perfect and I like that Nikon’s system is easy to assert manual control over, when desired or needed.
You must be rich. Insanely expensive to jump ecosystems. I am Canon all the way, mostly because I can't afford the switch (and I'm allergic to Nikon for ridiculous psycho-social reasons).
What about all the people who are cannon nut huggers talking about the colors are better? And what about the auto focus being better on cannon eith 983 focus points? Did you notice anything when u went back to nikon im currently on nikon and wanna upgrade to z8 but so much hate lol
@@joe2guns The colors ARE DIFFERENT! Whether or not they are better is a matter of taste. As for AF, at the end of the day, I want the most predictable combination of automation and manual control. For me, that comes from Nikon.
Excellent comparison. My take away is that if are already in the Canon, Sony or Nikon system, the differences between the systems are fairly immaterial. Switching systems is costly, if you have a large lens investment. In my view, new models from each manufacturer tend to jump ahead of their competitor's older models. Exercising patience tends to even things out.
I shoot Nikon Z8 for wildlife and it does a great job... No camera is perfect, and has its twirks buuut all of those cameras are freaking amazing. Nikon, Sony or Canon. They all make fantastic products no matter what you shoot. Personally I like how Nikon Z8 looks and feels, Its big and heavy that suits me, and has best colours straight out wich is very important for me. Otherwise the specs for all of those cameras, 20,30 fps, 45 mp+ Amazing, just amazing. Cheers and happy shooting :D
I bought a R5 when they first came out and have enjoyed it since. Glass was harder to come by at that point but through the years I have amassed a decent amount of RF lenses and some adapted EF glass that just look amazing. Now vested in a lens mount my choice is simple and in fact I double down with an R7 that my 100-500 lives on making one very nice wildlife lens without the softening of teleconverters. I guess it comes down to glass as camera bodies come and go, glass tends to stay in your kit. I do remember a time when the Fro was very much a Sony fan boy and has moved over time towards Canon with time and long ago he was all Nikon. If I had to start over I am not sure what I would go for, all three make some very nice systems and can produce beautiful images. Something to consider is the health of the company. For Sony the camera division is a very small element and almost a curiosity and it could be dropped with very little thought form Sony. Nikon is late to some of the major technological shifts in industry putting them very much behind. Canon is an imaging company and as such is all in. I think I made the right decision and very much enjoy the experience that the R5 gives.
I disagree with Nikon being behind in tech. Surely I think the R6 mk ii could beat out the z9/Z8 due to dual pixel AF technology and AI focus, but nikon lately has produced stunning lenses for z mount and Z8 is a very ergonomic body with a stacked sensor which is very important for sports photography. Comparing telephoto lenses, Nikon's latest 180-600mm f5.6-6.3 is a far superior affordable super telephoto than RF 100-500 or even the Sony 200-600 both in terms of aperture and range. This has to be winning for Nikon
Used R5 for less than 3k with a battery grip for the win all day everyday! I know so because I just did so, it's more than enough camera for any one man these days. No more overheating, and the RF glass is just killing it! I can do 4k and 1080p up to 120fps. I can do multi codecs plus raw and dual card recording with video.
I switched from z6 to an r5. Do i regret this after seeing the z8? Absolutely not. The canon system is incredible and now photography is clinical for me.
For me the case is clear: Nikon Z8 Back when i bought my current camera, i took the Z7 in my hands and then the D850. The D850 just fits the hands really good, which i feel is a big plus for long days out shooting wildlife. So just because of size that is a plus point for the Z8 in my book. Then the flicker free viewfinder and no mechanical shutter. If you can read out the sensors that fast, why should i carry a mechanical shutter? Then i prefer to have better ergonomics. The D850 is also basically instantly ready to take pictures. And i had it happen multiple times that i thought i'm gonna walk here or there early in the morning and left the camera shut off to save battery but then see e.g. a roe deer or a fox somewhere i didn't expect it. So I only got the shot because the camera was ready instantly. And then, in the situation now as one might have expected: i have Nikon lenses now. If I change the system I need to change the lenses aswell.
Precisely, i wouldn't want to change to canon or sony as i am a nikon guy. But on the other hand, if one has to switch (considering they have good no. of glass) it is really a tough decision!
As one who shoots a fair amount in very dark light, including stars at night, Sony has a feature the others do not, called “Bright Display.” It accumulates light from the sensor to “see in the dark” and allows framing night scenes like the Milky Way and Manually focusing on stars in pitch darkness. That, and gorgeous 60 megapixel landscapes are the main reason I went with the Sony A7RV. That said, I’ve been shooting Sony for 15 years so the real choice for me was the A7RV or the A1.
I watched this helpful video a couple of times. May I suggest that the very first thing one should consider when buying into a system (which is exactly what we are doing) is to ask: 1.) Do I have the lenses I need already? 2.) Which company makes the best and most available lenses I need for what I want to do. The cameras have gotten so good now, that it's the lenses that one plans to use that mostly determine the camera system to use. That's my thinking, at least.
Something that you briefly mentioned earlier but I think probably should’ve been harped on more during the video section is that Nikon can’t do redundant recording. CF Type B cards are very reliable but any pro looking at this camera should fully understand the risk they’re taking
i have a z8 and one thing that i don't like is the lack of shutter. there's something about taking a hand held shot at say 1/2 sec with a mechanical shutter of say a z6/7 that you can feel when the shot its done. on the z8 it just makes a noise from the speaker, so its a bit hard to shoot with instinct. Might be something that doesn't make sense unless you experience it. other than that the z8 beats the others hands down. i found it interesting some of the winning points were overlooked in this review
It's great that they are all fantastic cameras. If you're going to buy a camera in this price range you probably already have a lot of glass, so that's the one you go with. I just got the Nikon Z8 and it is unbelievable how great it is.
@@lesliewachter1275 just finished installing it. The af is almost instantaneous & sticks like crazy. No that I had my problems with 3.10. Have client shoots the whole weekend… excited!
I'm really surprised that the newer A7RV shoots less fps in uncompressed raw than the older A7RIII. I migrated from canon to sony because I felt like the A7RIII was the best bang for my buck and no other camera in that price range offered the porformance or all of the features I was looking for at the time of purchase. I have no regrets making the switch but Nikon is really closing the gap and catching up to sony and canon. I think the Z8 wins this comparison for now but sony has been kind of revolutionary in terms of tech and features and I can't wait to see what they bring to the table in the future. I also hope to see breakthroughs with other camera manufacturers. Competition always brings out the best in companies and who knows what new technology the other brands will create to battle back against others with. It's an exciting time to be a photographer
Build a solid lens collection, cameras are mostly gonna be the same, all have slight differences depending on what you want to shoot, I’ve seen photographers with 5dmk1 shoot better than loads of photographers with the latest & greatest.
Using a combination of Z9/Z8 for stills and video, the level of performance is just insane. Someone recently compared Nraw 12 bits grading to Arri and he was able to make them look identical while he could never achieve this with a Sony FX6... The eye AF of the Z8/Z9 fm4.0 is as close to perfection as it gets. I was shooting a model last Friday with Z8 and P1 XF+IQ4-150 and 90% of my keepers are with the Nikon. Focus is just 100% perfect every time and you end up with more actual resolution with the 45mp sensor than with the 150mp one.
The Nikon is the clear winner, R5 has 20fps but bends anything faster than a walking person, The Sony has the same burst of my 1988 Nikon F4 so I won't do a thing with it
This is an easy one: - want a tank or the cheapest stacked sensor FF with the best handling, and the most responsive camera? the Nikon Z8 - want the most well-rounded in photo+video specs? the Canon R5 - want the best subject detection algoritms (which doesn't always mean 100% shots in focus), the best auto white balance, the most versatile screen, and find it at a good price? the Sony a7R V
I did buy both the Canon R5 and the Sony A7R5 and both are great cameras but the Sony is just less buggy and the battery life is just significantly better...however I only have a big white prime for Canon and can't afford to shell out another 12 or more thousand so I will be keeping both systems for a while. I do hope that both Sony and Canon follow Nikon and bring the stacked sensor down to this set of cameras as I would love to actually use silent shutter but never do with either of these cameras. Really compared to cameras even 4 years ago these 3 are all so amazing as they have really managed to get all the tools I have wanted for high resolution nature photography. I'm sure they will get better but really there is nothing stopping me from getting the shots I want to get anymore.
I know you have a bug up your heiny about Nikon. That said I've owned the R5 and A7RV in the last year. All I can say is the Z9 I'm currently working with is legions beyond those other 2. Not only does it beat their pants off in regards to properly set up focus methods (which so many seem to miss losing out on the ultimate performance of the Z8-Z9) but the overall image quality regarding artifact free detail and especially color! (and you KNOW this Fro from having used Nikon's before) rules. The EVF was perhaps the most surprising element I ran across. I was under the mistaken impression my former A7RV's EVF was the finest......not even close to the results off an Z8/Z9. The Sony has grain and moire which is annoying as heck let alone drops resolution on shooting. The dynamic range, ability to cope with very bright scenes on the Z9 is other worldly by comparing to those others. Build quality is also on another plane. So I'll leave it at that. And oh yeah, I'm a professional whose shot weddings, portraits, events and real estate over the last 25 years. So I"m no amateur hack saying all of this.
I have owned an R5 for quite a while now and never once have I said, "man, I sure do wish I had a 61MP sensor like that Sony A7RV". The mad push for more sensor resolution is decoupled from the post processing workflow reality. Now I would kill for 1/32000ths shutter and that stacked sensor with no blackout. Sony choosing a CFExpress type A is "Memory Stick II".
I started mirrorless with Micro 4/3. Olympus EM5II. I still stuck with Sony System is because of lens choices. Yes people might argue that with such a body like A7RV, GM is the way to go as other brands with their first party lenses. The thing is Sony embrace adapted lenses for MF lenses. Canon/Nikon too with Sigma MC-11. Not perfect but it does work, kinda. Voitlanger, Zeiss, Viltrox, Samyang, Sigma, Tamron, TTArtisan and the list goes on. Just with so much more choices imo and availability of those glass in my region made me stay on. Recently snagged up a set of new Loxia at such a bargain too. Such lenses are not currently avaliable with full support like metering, etc. Magnified Zoom, etc. Sony makes MF fun imo. Though I don't really like Sony colour tbh, lots of post work is needed but the recent A7RV renders the colours beautifully imo. Still prefer Lumix though hahaha. I can't wait where L mount grows too with a S1RII.
The Z8 would be my favourite but for 2 things: 1) Lack of redundant video recording. 2) The sheer size of it with a battery grip attached. Used R5s are significantly cheaper and overcome those 2 issues, but the LCD screen design puts me off....so hard to choose!
Forget Jared's bias, but Z8 blows canon and sony out of the water in terms of specs, quality, and price. So obvious the bias on the video capabilities of Z8, which none of canon and sony could muster because of their cinelines to protect hence the vaunted cripple hammer in sony and especially canon, lol. Like the Z9, the Z8 is loaded with high-end video features for capturing high-resolution content with impressive dynamic range. 12-bit internal recording is possible using Nikon’s N-RAW format as well as 10-bit ProRes 422 HQ, eliminating the need for external accessories. Nikon haters gonna be hate but Nikon is killing it.
If the Z8 had Canon on the front Jared would be waxing lyrical about how much greater a camera it is over the other two technological dinosaurs. No doubt.
Nice comparison. I shot Canon DSLR for the past 5 years and Canons statement to hold back 3rd party glass was a deal-breaker for me. Sony has been very pro-active and got the best sensors for a long time although others are catching up. Canon R(F) is still new and pricey while Sony E-mount (lenses) are available for some time now, 2nd hand available for reduced prices. I recently was able to buy a Sony A7R4 which also has the 61 megapixel sensor the successor has. I don't do video or action much so this is a perfect choice for me, paired with a Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 resulting in pin-sharp 61 megapixel photo's I hope to get the 16mm f/1.8 Viltrox this week to complement that.
All great cameras, would put Canon and Nikon ahead for versatility and the Z8 ahead of the Canon for all the bells and whistles and I do like a little bigger body for better handling especially wider aperture portrait / telephoto lenses
About to make the jump from Canon 5dmIII to Sony A7RV. I shoot product photography and sometimes landscape and architecture. I dont really care about video much anymore because anything that has ibis and more than 1080 120 fps will be more than enough. the biggest reasons for the switch is the smaller body, and the lens options.
A7RV was the path for me ! Along the way, I eliminated a ton of zoom lenses and went back to a few high quality primes, since this camera deserves the best lenses.
@@kevc.2958 Not at all, you can do smooth edits fine with a puny macbook air M1 with 8 Gigs of ram(even though I recommend only from 16 and up). And external SSD's are cheap
new firmware for Z9 and auto capture and takes 6mins for camera to update and will be out for Z8 too. its game changer. since you can leave z9 on tripod set it up and forget and when subject comes in to frame it take photo or video of subject. and new video for low lighting with low 2 setting
@@Uisci81 newer, feels great in hands, don't care too much about video or 8k it can get warm but it's not a dedicated video cam, mega pixel feels balance perfect, i love the Nikon color it's more natural, the AF selection can be a little confusing or cluttered, it's faster than the r5, AF it's the same or even better with future firmware, ef lenses do work with Nikon using those adapters. Again I do love the Nikon color more than Canon, there's something about it when shooting candids and nature.
Who is actually interested in such comparisons? Most of us can't afford to change the system, just because the one camera has some better features right now. a) this changes anyway with every new model and b) the big investment are the lenses and all the other accessories.
Well, time to update this video, Jared. Firmware 4.0 just released with some amazing features for Z8 and Z9! Nikon coming in the room like Muhammed Ali with the updates. The champ is here!
Yes it is and I'm hoping some of those 4.0 updates get included in the Z8 firmware update in the near future. Will be interested to hear what Jared has to say about it.
In fairness, the Sony "R" series bodies are not intended for general use. They are aimed at "higher resolution" situations like architecture and landscapes. The general purpose bodies are the A7iv (and maybe an A7v in the future). For more specific sports photography, I think the A9 series (A9 and A9ii) and A1 series bodies were intended for that stuff. Likewise, the "sports" bodies might be better for video. But really, for video, I use video cameras. . . .
The Alpha A1 is the "all purpose" camera from Sony. Perfect for landscapes, astro, wildlife/sports and video. Hoping for an upgrade soon though since it is 3 years old
Why are you guys wasting your time arguing. I don’t play well with others. I do and buy what make me happy as a photographer. You’re wasting each other time arguing. Grow up please. Get the camera that is best for your photography and what you’re happy and best for your pockets. Lol really 😂
Z8 is giving alot, r5 is giving best price to performance, a7rv is giving highest resolution. If I was buying I like the double swivel screen of the a7rv and I like the canon price. As a video person not sure what I like about the z8 tho. I have to look more into it.
@Photo Bunny yah pricing also depends on location. If where I live z8 is 300 less than r5 I would still watch comparison videos based on what I do before deciding. but at 300 less I would strongly be in favor of z8 until comparison videos prove otherwise
@@lewcehjitl3282 lol youre the sad one here. a camera is more than just its autofocus. it's good enough and kicks ass with other features. you're just salty! haha
The smaller size and lighter weight of both body and lenses of the Sony ecosystem, while being very best and sometimes the best in class in performance makes the choice easy for me. The icing on the cake is the open-for-everyone e-mount.
I was surprised with the sensor check other than that nice comparison. I am sure when the R5II comes out or is announce it would up the game. I bought the z8 and enjoy some of the features bust still getting use to the changes.
The Nikon Z mount allows you to use Sony E mount lenses with a Megadap ETZ21 PRO adapter that adds only about 1/16 inch to the length of mounted lenses and allows the lenses to work perfectly with no real degradation in features or performance. I use the Sony 70-200 2.8 GMII, 24-105 4.0 G, and 12-24 4.0 G lenses on my Z9, as well as a Zeiss Batis 135 2.8 (Emount) and they work perfectly - at least as well as on my Sony a7Riii. Z mount is the most versatile mount out there today. The video misses this point in stating Sony has the largest selection of lenses, as you can now use any Sony E mount lens on a Nikon Z body, as well as the Nikon Z lenses.
Nikon wins because of the stacked sensor. I have an R5 which is not good for hummingbird in flight and I don't like R3 which has only 24 mp that is not good for bird photography.
Which would you buy today if you had a choice and why???

You realize Sony had a blackout free EVF in their first A9 (not to mention every other stacked sensor camera they produced afterwards back in 2017), right? I wouldnt exactly call it a completely new experience unless you are a nikon shooter.
@@TrevorMaliszewski Sony also had the rolling shutter
I jumped ship from my Sony A74 & A7R3 to the Nikon Z8. So far loving the Nikon.
Hi..i too have a A74 and was thinking of switching to Z8 for colors. Do you see a big difference in colors? How is everything else?
@@piyhaw I wouldn’t switch for colors. All cameras can get pretty close to the same color with raw editing.

The Z8, because i had nikon gear before. Non of the camera's are that much better/worse to switch systems. And the nikon lenses now are just awesome.
I completely agree with you !
Nikon has done a great job with the z8, i would go with the z8 all the way!!!🔥

Too much plastic for me ;-D
It misses autofocus I’d save $3500usd and buy a canon r8. 40fps with canons dpaf2 can’t compete.
I use Canon for daytime and Nikon for night and deep space photography. I start to think that I may very soon switch to the dark side completely. New Nikons are so impressive!
Same. Even their new lenses like 70-180 and 180-600 are so tempting
@@abhishekshah11 Oh yeah, I saw an ad today about those lenses. The 180-600mm should be amazing.

Love my Nikon Z8. The new autofocus helps me sooooo much better at events than my Z6ii did. Definitely worth it, especially with its video specs and stacked sensor.
I have the Z6ii, what difference can you say in the af ?
That it works?
@@tucompaivan night and day. I have the Z6ii, Z7ii, and now the Z8. 3D tracking works very well. The hand-off technique between Wide AF and 3D works great for tracking fast moving subjects. Keeping the Z6ii and Z7ii for landscapes and Astro. My Z8 now is the all-rounder.
@George Robinson Thanks, I have the Sony A6400, and the af is great. Little better than Z6ii. From my point of view.
@@tucompaivan A6400 is the world fastest focus camera ... however nikon z8 is the best in all segment !

The Nikon Z-mount allows the adaption of even Sony e-mount lenses on to their Z cameras. My friend uses a Sony 200-600mm on his Z9.
6 days later Nikon releases 180-600
You can run the Z8 off the USB-C PD port. I had the camera on for 12 hours straight shooting a short film with a small 10,000mAh power bank. Didnt have to change the battery and the battery indicator was reading full charge all day.
You're right about the Z8 files vs R5. Not sure if Canon actually applies a small amount of sharpening but the Z8 files CAN be as clean as the Canon's. It takes 1 minute in Resolve to do so, but it doesnt change the fact that right out of camera the Canon's are a tad better.
Aren’t you nervous about shooting 12 hours of video without a backup card?
@@YerMumIsKewl Arri and Red only have one card slot too. what exactly is the argument?
I'd say that the Z8 actually has the best mount, because besides the native options, any other lens can be adapted to it, and there's a pretty good E-mount adapter for it as well.

Z8 because of the great Z lens lineup. All those 3 bodies are “the same” so the difference comes with the lens available for the new mounts.
Ordered Z8, should come in a few days.
Z8 is the clear winner in this one.
Nikon seem to be the only one releasing constantly great firmware updates, making them even better.
You must be rich. Insanely expensive to jump ecosystems. I am Canon all the way, mostly because I can't afford the switch (and I'm allergic to Nikon for ridiculous psycho-social reasons).
I have an EOS R and honestly it's giving me headaches. I've been seriously thinking of switching.
Very happy with my A7RV and A1 combo :) and the amount of lens availability and options for the FE mount!
That's a great combo.
Nikon Z8 has all the features I want and #1, I like a larger body camera, they just feel right in my big mitts !!
Nikon Z8, terrific body and lens combinations, waiting for an ultra zoom and a s line tilt-shift, AF meets all my needs.
At work, I use the Sony. Personally, I use the Canon. Got the Nikon a week ago to play with & by far, the Nikon is king
Otherwise the specs for all of those cameras, 20,30 fps, 45 mp+
Amazing, just amazing.
I still use my old D700 for photography yet I always watch these videos. I would choose the Z8 in a heartbeat if money wasn't an issue.
Same here.
I own a D700 I bought in 2007 and now an R5, I simply could not sell my D700. The files are simply stunning 17 years later.
I went from Nikon Z to EOS R as well. No regret.
Great video as always. The Nikon Z8 will shoot in video 8K 60p. Noticed your video stated 8k 30p max.

For me the case is clear: Nikon Z8
Back when i bought my current camera, i took the Z7 in my hands and then the D850.
It's called "Starlight view" in the Nikon and it does the same thing.
Obviously the Z8 destroyed all the others, very simply, the numbers and specifications say it all!
I am buying my Z8 tomorrow!
Something that you briefly mentioned earlier but I think probably should’ve been harped on more during the video section is that Nikon can’t do redundant recording. CF Type B cards are very reliable but any pro looking at this camera should fully understand the risk they’re taking
In my country nikon Z8 is cheaper than sony A7R5. I am down for Nikon Z8 all the way!!!!
since i can understand ur name, ill go ahead and assume we belong to the same country. So have u bought z8, and if so, for how much?
i have a z8 and one thing that i don't like is the lack of shutter. there's something about taking a hand held shot at say 1/2 sec with a mechanical shutter of say a z6/7 that you can feel when the shot its done. on the z8 it just makes a noise from the speaker, so its a bit hard to shoot with instinct.
The one with the mount that matches your current lens collection.

I own the Sony a7r V and I’m very happy with it. I even prefer it over my Sony a1 when it comes to image quality.
I am keeping the Canon R5 for portraits and assignments. Got an a7r 5 on order for landscape. Best of both worlds. :)
r5 45mp is not enough?😅
A7RV for me since I'm a Sony user. Love the huge 61 megapixel sensor and the videos having 10-bit colors now.
Not true. I have fx6 of personal use and shoot Ari and Sony cine cams, the FX6 can get identical to Arri! That's why we have FX6
Z8 best ever
The Nikon is the clear winner, R5 has 20fps but bends anything faster than a walking person, The Sony has the same burst of my 1988 Nikon F4 so I won't do a thing with it
This is an easy one:
- want a tank or the cheapest stacked sensor FF with the best handling, and the most responsive camera? the Nikon Z8
- want the most well-rounded in photo+video specs? the Canon R5
- want the best subject detection algoritms (which doesn't always mean 100% shots in focus), the best auto white balance, the most versatile screen, and find it at a good price? the Sony a7R V
BOOM! Nailed it
I did buy both the Canon R5 and the Sony A7R5 and both are great cameras but the Sony is just less buggy and the battery life is just significantly better...however I only have a big white prime for Canon and can't afford to shell out another 12 or more thousand so I will be keeping both systems for a while.
I had A73 and upgraded to R6, the Sony was so laggy, a lot of shutter lag, can't shoot any sports with it!
At $2,500 more than the R5 I would hope the Z9 is better!!! But the Z9 is a professional camera, the R5 isn't.
"The R5 isn't a professional camera" 🤦 this kind of gatekeepy nonsense is just too much.
Z8 all the way !
Nikon
stacked vs non stacked is the key
No doubt.
Just Like your comment is biased towards Nikon.

Can I ask why you went from r5 to z8, I’m trying to decide between them now
@@Uisci81 newer, feels great in hands, don't care too much about video or 8k it can get warm but it's not a dedicated video cam, mega pixel feels balance perfect, i love the Nikon color it's more natural, the AF selection can be a little confusing or cluttered, it's faster than the r5, AF it's the same or even better with future firmware, ef lenses do work with Nikon using those adapters.
That’s only for the Z9, not the Z8.
Yes it is and I'm hoping some of those 4.0 updates get included in the Z8 firmware update in the near future. Will be interested to hear what Jared has to say about it.
@@stepheneckert4006 True, but I'd be shocked if it didn't come to Z8 as well, since it's the same specs in a smaller body.
@@stepheneckert4006 Nikon announced in the Z9 4.0 reveal video that the Z8 is getting auto capture.
But really, for video, I use video cameras. . . .
But the Z8 does everything well
@@joemekaits just not the same, cameras just feel unnatural for shooting video. Give me a video camera anyday !
The Alpha A1 is the "all purpose" camera from Sony. Perfect for landscapes, astro, wildlife/sports and video. Hoping for an upgrade soon though since it is 3 years old
I have the Z8 and Z9 because I'm not too good with money
Z8 video is another level.. new N RAW codec is amazing ... 8k 60p is just mind blowing.. ' nikon z8 video autofocus is better than still autofocus '
@Photo Bunny good point. but with the sony the v1 70 200 is lesser than the nikon, and the canon ef lens is also lesser.
@@DanceDeepDas i would be interested in all 3 at 4k 60p outdoor overheating test side by side. honestly that would be more beneficial for me.
The z8 blows the other 2 out of the water with video specs, polin knows that but is reviewing out of emotion, his canon love is just too strong.
NIKON ALL DAY!
Lmao Nikon fan boys are hardcore. 😅 the canon R8 takes out the new z8 in autofocus department. So sad.
@@lewcehjitl3282 lol youre the sad one here. a camera is more than just its autofocus. it's good enough and kicks ass with other features. you're just salty! haha
@@lewcehjitl3282 im still using the z6 and can barely keep up with demand for my service!!
@@lewcehjitl3282nikon D700 have setting like hdr better than all hdr setting from canon and sony.
Every time jared talks about nikon there should be an asterisk floating next to his forehead.
spot on about the evf ive got all 3 and agree with you
I only watch for the wind tunnel test as that's what I'm looking for in a camera.
I bought the z8 and enjoy some of the features bust still getting use to the changes.
can't imagine what sensor r5ii is using
Your reaction to the electronic shutter of 4 fps (4:06) had me literally LOL!!!
Although it has been on the market for 3 years, Canon R5 is my first choice in terms of price and performance.
