I think one of the most important reasons people fail to improve singing is trying to sound like someone else. The single most important thing to me when I first started learning is the analogy that you can’t make a clarinet sound like a trumpet or a saxophone sound like a tuba ( not healthily for the instrument). In the same way, understanding the timbre of your voice is very important when singing as when you know what notes sound like in your voice and not your favorite pop star... many people don’t realize that the note they are singing with their favorite singer may be sharp or flat in their own timbre and to sound the same they have to add in additional tension. This is of course without taking into consideration effects placed on those voices such as compression, the limitations of highs and lows frequencies when recording, constant belting from mainstream pop and overall emulation of certain faces when professionals are singing which in turn makes those who watch think they need to push or strain to sing the note. It’s a rabbit hole that leads many to fail. Very important to sing on your own and record yourself without comparing or singing with others so you can eventually be comfortable with YOUR voice and showcase it’s unique abilities. Thanks for the video Dr. Dan! 👍🏽
Kirsten Cox it takes time. You want to sing with a piano. Your voice is like a muscle so you have to strengthen your vocal cords before trying to add more power. It’s important to focus on breathing first. Then doing vocal exercises. The reason the exercises are there is to kick in the automatic response of your vocal muscles when singing a song so you won’t have to force the note. If you sing everyday for 30 min to one hour or (even 15/20 mins) practicing vocal exercises with a piano I guarantee you’ll get better. With maybe one day of rest a week I guarantee the tone will start to come. What’s important is that you sing comfortably first without straining. It’s better to sing comfortably out of tune than to “get the note” and strain. Consistency is the key. Simple practice everyday gets you better. Not once a week or once a month or once a year or pounding yourself vocal cords to the loudest you can sing a note. You have to work out the whole voice... that’s why vocal exercises are important. You know when you’re starting to get better when you become one with your voice and you realize that something is not right in the way it feels while singing. If you want accurate and specified coaching for your specific voice in the stage it’s in then you want to hire a vocal coach to help you. (Preferably one that you like the singing of and has a valid history of teaching students that you also can see their improvement)
Yeah, I can't practise every day (I rest voice two days in week) because parents don't like me singing they don't understand what I sing and how voice works and they say I sing bad just because I don't sing on my country language and I don't sing very good I'm begginer but I Love my voice, but when someone tells me I don't sing beautifully and the way they want it's hurts me because I sing what I love and about what I love. I understand how voice works and it's more easy to learn even when I don't practise days I need to.
O my god,,,, you're totally my type as same happened to me I'm either can't sing in my country language is "Urdu" I'm sung English songs because I love to sing English songs and also my parents doesn't like when I'm singing but I really love singing and I wrote some songs as well but here is no one who help me in my singing just me I'm sing in my room and feel happy ...
I bought the classes (haven't started practicing yet shame on me ) but at the beginning that I started reading if I remember correctly it says to only do 1 days practice / 2 days rest, so you would practice 3 time a week :) if that gives you a bit of encouragement, you are on the right path apparently ❤️
Damn you speak so fluently! That's my next target, being able to speak into the camera without being a nervous wreck hahaha! Miss ya Dan! Hope you've been well!
So I stumbled across your channel a month a go. I was already a professional full time musician but I knew I needed a lot of help vocally. Since watching these videos and taking them seriously my pitch, stamina and enjoyment of learning about my voice has sky rocketed. I've gone back to my old videos and I can hear the struggles that you speak of and help with. I know it's a long amazing road to building up my vocals but you've set me on such a great path. A huge thank you from one musician to another
Yes, #14. You have to take risks. May I add #16? Because you THINK your singing sucks. Fill your mind with confidence, a mandatory requisite for singing well.
I just found you here on TH-cam. I am very thrilled to see that you cover so much in your instruction and have a treasure trove of helpful and meaningful techniques, exercises as well as an understanding of how your voice needs to work in order to get a strong and fluid sound. I just wrote and recorded my first song and video, I am certainly not a singer ... in fact I avoided singing at all costs. Jumping in with both feet, sink or swim is usually how I do things. Finding your channel will really help out with future endeavors, thankyou.
