    I'm a classically trained singer, teacher, and pedagogy enthusiast who has been so frustrated by the traditional terminology of McKinney and similar streams of thought - especially with how limited they are for describing more modern styles of singing. I've stumbled across several methodologies that address TA and CT dominance which have helped me clear up some questions, but they never addressed the outer registers and how the muscles relate to those. This is by far the most succinct, clear, and relevant explanation of registers I have ever seen. Thank you SO much. I feel so much more equipped as a teacher, and even as a singer.

    That was very informative video indeed. Registration in our voices is much more complicated than just 4 or 5 registers. What about my own vocal range, it goes like this when I warmed-up
    0)Something like A1-G2 as my pulse/fry register, sometimes I can make it a bit more dark, creating an illusion of being a baritone, lol
    1)G2 as a started note (that's the last note I can sing in pure chest and usually it's very quiet, F#2 is more likely to be sung in pulse rather than chest, sometimes I'm just sharp and can't even hit it)
    2)Then it follows to D4 as the end of my pure chest voice and then I start to add more mix or more length
    3)Then somewhere around G#4 I feel that it becomes more light, less weighty
    4)Then after B4/C5, depends on day I can't sing in my chest coordination any longer and it start to crack (I'm still not trained enough to sing in my mix voice higher but I will in the future defenitely)
    5)C5-G5/G#5 it's my head voice, vibrant, full, embodied sound, reminds me about opera a bit when I apply more vibrato and resonance in it
    6)From G5/G#5 and up to C#6/D6 it usually starts cracking into something even more light with some airiness in it, I consider it falsetto usually but I'm not sure at all. Maybe it's the bell register from the table, it's very easy for me to do but I don't know what exact name of that area is
    7)And finally my whistle dominates from D6 and up to C#7, very rarely up to D7 and it's the end of my vocal range, I can't even squeeze higher no matter how hard I try. Earlier I could expand my whistle as far as G7 but it's all gone for now
    But I also can describe it more shortly:
    Fry register: A1-G2
    Chest (without mix mechanism): F#2-D4
    Chest (with balanced mix): D4-G#4
    Chest (with heady/light mix): A4-C5
    Head voice (full and true head voice): E4-G#5
    Falsetto?/Bell?: E5-D6
    Whistle: G5-D7
    There's some overlapping between register for sure but it should be like this I guess.

    • @ZacharyT94
      @ZacharyT94 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm quite similar in my ranges as well, however I don't really have a falsetto or whistle register.
      Consistent ranges:
      My pulse/fry is E1-D2
      Lower register is Eb2-D4
      Upper register Eb4-G#5
      However I can interchange between lower and upper register (not mixing) between E3-F4.
      As for mixing here's where I tend to use dominant mixes
      Lower mix (TA muscle dominant): G#3-F4
      Higher mix (CT muscle dominant):
      F#4-D5.
      I have a lot of trouble with a balanced mix but my ENT tells me that's due to very obstructed upper airways (will be operated on next year).

      A year ago when I started my vocal range was C1 - E3, but I did not feel comfortable with two octaves, it was then that I decided to expand my vocal range, with the help of several videos of singing teachers incluiding Dr Dan for six months I was working on my voice every week I put a note as a goal until I reached C6. I am currently improving my voice technique and at the same time I am happy because I achieved my goal of covering all the keyboard notes with my voice.

    Okie-doke! I came in on F2, which was just about comfortable, but only just. Me first transition was, I'm gunna say, about F4/F#4. Me second one happened at about C5, then again, at about F5, arriving at the dreaded A5, where, once again, I topped out, and weren't able to go any higher. My old vocal coach classified me as a Baritone. Does that sound about right for a Bari?

    It's kind of confusing. It's possible to do a fry on chest and head notes, not just low rumble like you shown, but it's still considered a pulse register? Or pulse register isn't supposed to be lowest one?

    Thank you so much Dr. Dan. I took voice lessons years ago and never understood these concepts until now. I remember it took me a while and a lot of training before I could access the “mixed” register. I’m guessing “mixed” is the ideal singing voice. Can some people just naturally sing in the mixed register without training or do we all have to work at it? If I can’t access “mixed” then singing can be difficult because my break is pretty low and I don’t want to be singing in “head” all the time. My range is 3 octaves but I feel like that’s completely useless if a lot of it is in head voice. Really hoping I can learn to access the mixed voice again.

    Question for you Dr Dan...I see SO MANY...SOOOO MANY...social media "voice coach experts" use these exact words "mix is when you blend your chest voice and head voice together". This is, IMO, so inaccurate. Correct me if I'm wrong, but my question is this...opposing muscles cannot fire at the same time, correct? Am I correct in understanding that the CT and TA cannot fire at the same time? There is only ever ONE muscle doing the work at any given moment? Thanks!

    Didn't quite get the difference between upper register and falsetto. They more or less seem the same. And sound the same too. This is coming from a baritone who is having a tough time keeping up with the trend of tenor and soprano singing.

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a Tenor my voice does not display a significant difference between upper register lengthener dominant and falsetto...but as a baritone you should be able to detect a major difference between the two in your own voice.

    I always have a question, is it possible for a guy not to have falsetto?
    (Imitating female voice)
    I can’t sing any falsetto since i passed adolescence and started singing,
    when I try it only pushes a lot of air without making any sound.
    I even went to doctor, but he doesnt seem to understand my problem and told me my vocal cord is good. I’m so confused lol, especially when people around me can all do it except me haha.

    Hello Dr. Dan. Amazing as always! Just a question. What is the role of the False vocal folds (ventricular folds) in the production of the falsetto sound? And what happens to the CT and TA muscles when the falsetto sound is being produced?

    • @DrDanRobinson
      @DrDanRobinson  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      With falsetto, the false folds should not be involved at all.

    I'll have to come back and try it a few more times. I can't seem to easily identify transitions. I start with you at the first low base note (just) and simply go up until, to my embarrassment, I can't match the higher notes. Might get a squeak but then nothing. (May need to concentrate/practice more at the top end then.) But when did anything transition ?

    That mapping exercise was difficult, whew.. I think I was just getting louder, rather than moving up in register (hopefully I'm using the right term there.. or is it range? 🤔). Should this be happening? Or should the pitch just be changing?

    When you're supposed to sing in diaphragm and not with throat is it supposed to sound higher in pitch? I kinda like the pitch and depth of my voice when singing with throat. When I attempt to sing without throat I feel like I'm raising my pitch. I don't like the tone much compared to when I just sing normally w/throat. Thanks!
