Are you willing to sacrifice your soldiers whom you trained and invested to those civilians? Now if you have no control of your soldiers and watch your Colonel's with augments and best gear, jump in front a Berserker to save a civilian and died, would you be happy? Now you lost your best men in the war, and have to train another to that rank. One of the downsides of Salamanders.

Ngl, i love that they made his racial phenotype asian to better show off that the skin color of the salamanders is a genetic mutation. Too often you see them depicted as african which leads to a strange meme about them being "the black guy" chapter. Also, shoutout to whoever writes Sa'kan's dialogue, thats some next level stuff.

Hot take: Salamanders are the bravest space marine chapter/legion because they have the courage to make themselves emotionally vulnerable by caring about regular people in such a grim setting.
Most space Wolves when not fighting are like this, some even keep in contact with their clans so the deeds of the dead live on and not just in the chapter. A lot of chapters are like this honestly. It's just they are over shadowed by the amount of chapters who aren't as kind to standard humans. Even Grimaldus and his brother came to respect the humans who fought in Helsreach, soldier or conscript.
What is true courage? Stand in front of an eldritch horror and destroy it without trace or being recognized for some deeds just because you saved a bunch of civilians?
I think the fact the emotionally care for all regular people of the imperium. Makes them different and to me emotionally tougher. They feel the loss at a deeper level.
3 things of note to me. 1. The eclesiarc isnt a raving mad lunatic. I like that. 2. Sa'kan humanizes himself to the children by saying "it hurts a little." Because thats what they understand. 3. The gunfire he hears is most likely the Sister from the first episode taking on the mind shackled Krieg.
Eclesiarc priests are charged with caring for their fellow man, and keeping them from corruption. but astartes do not go to worlds where everything is fine and dandy. But i agree, it is a pleasant change of pace, they are still humans after all.

Not really on the calculating part. Example on Armageddon, Grimaldus could have killed an ork Warboss, to cause the orks offensive to falter in the entire hive and cause the orks to infighting for the position vacuum. Salamanders ignore that strategic value to stay in front of the Docks blast doors to protect civilians, Grimaldus kicked them out.

I think his last statement to the Priest was calculated to tell the adults that there probably is no chance of salvation, without scaring the kids further. He still didn't want to lie about it, but it is the underlying kindness of the Salamanders that made him respond that way.
I really enjoy the accuracy of how space marine armor is portrayed. A lot of people forget that these things are huge, heavy, and pack a massive punch. So it makes sense the amount of noise it generates. Now don't shoot me down in comments if I'm completely wrong, I only got into Warhammer recently. But from how the lore describes it this is very accurate.
@@creeperfox2178 I think the eldar in-lore have said that nothing so large should move so fast - not only are marines super athletic by themselves, their armour has servos that can basically move the armour like our muscles move our body (the black carapace implant will be involved in this)
I nearly teared up seeing this video. The Salamanders and the Ogryn are last remnants of human decency and wholesomeness in the dreary world of 40k. I will gladly watch them any day of the week over even the Ultramarines.

@@borntopwnyou How Astartes' bodies and minds react to pain is explicitly different from that of normal humans. Which is why the pain glove is used for meditation in the Imperial Fists and their successors and presumably some other Chapters.
So he has two hearts, and three lungs, but one of each has failed. Doesn't this mean he has as many working hearts and lungs as the regular humans? I kind of like that symbolism. The Space Marine standing before the common people and trying to calm them in a moment when he is more like them than he'd usually be.
Two hearts, so that one doesn't need to pump all the blood his body would require on it's own. Three lungs, so that he can better serve in combat situations. And a whole host of various organs within him that makes an Astartes, an Astartes.
If you go back and see all the scenes where he is breathing and speaking, you start to notice how hard he's breathing missing those two organs. Like when he took off to dodge a stray shot later in this episode he's really exhaling to collect himself.
@Nostroman_Praetor thankfully, those can be replaced, so Sa'kan, should he survive his confrontation with the Deathmark, will be right as rain afterwards.
What i love about salamanders is while other astartes chapters see humans as below them and expandables, salamanders wont tolerate a single human life's casuality and get strenght from their humanity and remember who they fight for Also just cool to see 2 meters rock skin dude with glowing red eyes and using flamethrowers being the most wholesome astartes
dont mean to be rude but my engineering brain hates when people get maths so incredibly wrong 2 meters would make him a midget marine I am nearly 2 meters 1.86cm or 6,1 in feet to be exact, a Primaris marine is around 2.5 meters or 8,3 in feet.
Not many Chapters view humans as expendable or below them. For the average, protecting normal humans is the reason they exist. They simply prefer to defend humans by destroying the threat to them whereas the Salamanders prefer to guard them.
God they nailed the Salamander his attitude is perfect for a Space Marine and you can tell he's trying so hard to reassure them he's a kind person. Also the scale of making him look so incredibly massive next the humans is just absurd. I love that they made him feel so big and terrifying yet gentle and kind.
It's not absurd at all. That is the size of the average space marine. They are genetically augmented to grow into giants but still fast as oiled lightning.

Primarily due to Vulkan, the absolute unit that he is, is the biggest of the primarchs - hence it stands to reason that Vulkan's Space Marines who utilise his genes are also absolute units who dwarf other Space Marines.
The Salamanders and the Ultramarines are by far the most human compared to the other legions. What I’ve always found fascinating about how the salamanders interact with civilians is that they still have human emotions because they’re allowed to remain in contact with their birth family even after crossing the rubicon. I think they need to more stories like this very cool.
Love seeing a Salamander be the compassionate badass his brothers are renowned for. But shout out for having an Ecclesiarch Priest actually care for his people and not just be a raving lunatic.
Recent GW stuff doesn't help, but there are actually a few caring examples. Like in Helsreach, there's a priest character who actually leaves the safety of Stormherald (imperator class titan) when he realizes the sheer number of civilians probably traumatized by their home being torn apart by the war.
Contrary to what the famous warhammer stories may depict, there are more ecclesiarchs who are actually good and caring people than raving lunatics like van dire..

Each primarch is molded after an aspect of the emperor. Vulcan is the emperors unlimited love and compassion for humanity. He passed that on to his sons

So he had a i can fix all my fuckups type of attitude about his sons except for the lost and the damned with the second likely having his soul corrupted by chaos or turned against him in some other way way while the damned 11th was very likely raised by xenos likely the Rangan or some other reallt powerful xenos species that turned him agaisnt the Emperor completely things that brought him great shame and are the reason the two where ereased from all records while the genetically stable sons of both lost chapters where quietly assimilated into the ultramatines. Yeah he likes to pretend as if the primarchs are nothing but tools to him but it that was the case he wouldn't have grown so attached to so many of them much less allowed Horus to borderline kill him if he really was as heartless as he claimed to be in private with Malcador then he would have killed Horus immediately instead of figthing him 1 on 1 and trying to reason with a fully chaos corrupted a Horus. He also wouldn't have built special chambers for all his sons in his palace after all his end goal was for humanity to become stable and as powerful as during the dark age of technology minus the AI that caused its downfall. The biggest character trait the Emperor has is the fact he is a hypocrite he likes to rule and influence humanity but prefers to do it from the shadows indirectly and he just wishes for mankind to be self sufficent to know they will be safe without him and likely he planned to spend a lot of time with his sons since outside of perpetuals their the only other beings he can relate too. As to why he is such a genocidal asshole well he has been behind most Empires in human history he is very familiar with politics and while he loves humanity as a collective he is far too ancient and emotionally disconnected from the common man as to care for them in a personal level even if he likes to basically read all your memories and thoughs the moment he meets you to give off the atmosphere that he is a friend you know your whole life. The Emperor as powerful as he is he is still flawed a very flawed man who focuses too much on the future and the mistskes of his past (dude is responsible for most religions of humanities past as he used to see it as a way to unify humanity and is also a factor to why he is such a atheist he sees theology as his personal fuck up) to live in the present that is why he is always rushing he can only look to the horizon unable to see how his actions in the present can have terrible ripple effects in the future dude really needs to lay off the tarot cards. Still that's what makes the Emperor such a intresting character he pretends to be this charismatic caring individual as a fassade pretending to be a machiavelian cold calculative individual while he hides his true feelints and intentions getting irked and acting like a edgy teenager when one of his sons or friends can see through all his masks and understand the emperors true feelings and intentions something he really disklikes. Still this is just my opinion of him after reading way too many books and content about the bastard.

Space Marines are often described as so powerful, so altered, so big/strong/impossibly fast that it scares the living snot out of normal people. And rightly so. They are regarded as barely human. Again, rightly so. They're so far above normal people, and separated by such vast differences in cultures, that most humans seem to suffer in Space Marine hands, even while being protected even in 'good guy' hands. The Ultramarines protect people, but I don't think the Space Wolves do. Those guys have thralls. Most of the Space Marine chapters aren't... *nice* to normal people, and tend to behave like superior jerks even to people who are extremely accomplished. For him to allow himself to be vulnerable. Disarm himself. Move slowly. Talk calmly and carefully to scared people. To answer children. To kneel before humanity and behave kindly even as he swivels around to protect it, while pretty badly injured by Space Marine Standards. That's amazing. That genuinely got me in the feels.

It's kind of sad, but I also appreciate, that Sa'kan has to explain his literal black skin and red eyes are just how Salamanders look and that he isn't touched by Chaos. It goes to show how badly the Imperium has been affected that most civilians don't even recognize the especially unique physical feature of one of the first chapters.
Not really there are so few space marines, how many people know what 1/9th of navy seals unit insignia looks like? Without looking it up describe seal team 2's unit badge.

If there was a unit of Seals who all had a really characteristic physical trait, like all the members are exceptionally tall, that'd be a closer comparison and it would still be kinda sad if an operator had to go about in his day to day like: "Yes I am just this tall, nothing is wrong with me."
It's not really their fault.. a civilian seeing an astartes in modern 40k is very rare contrary to how some forms of media portray.. now back in the days where the emperor walked it was far more common but since the writing and implementation of the codex astartes where the legions were broken to form chapters of just 1000 marines, it has made civilian contact with the astartes far, far more rare.. but if it comforts you, there are many stories of salamanders going out of their way to dig through rubble to help children find their beloved toy.. many stories of vulkan's sons helping civilians find their pets after a battle.. there is even a short story of a salamander handing over their chapter banner to a little girl asking her to protect it coz he had to hold off a tyranid swarm.. he died but the little girl survived and gave back the chapter banner to the salamander reinforcements who arrived..
It's actually kinda important for him to state that he isn't touched by chaos as no other astartes would have the features a salamanders astartes has. The main reason is a malfunction in the meloncronic organ which regulates the amount of melanin in the astartes skin to protect against radiation. An astartes would normally have a northern European or Mediterranean skin tone, depending on certain variables such as how long they are exposed to solar radiation, on ships or within their monasteries they would have a light complexion and when deployed on planets will tan. When a salamanders astartes interacts with the unique radiation of Nocturns star, it damages their meloncronic organ, forcing it to overcharge to a permanent onyx black. Other chapters have malfunctions with their meloncronic organ like the raven guard and their successors, but the salamanders is especially egregious.

@@AvatarAang100 in truth it depends a lot of the individual. For example the most diverse chapters such as the ultramarines, you have some that ignore them, others that do care for them and would die to defend them and others who view them as a waste of effort.

2:50-I love the detail here; you can see the warmth and kindness in his eye, like a candle flame or a family hearth, as Sa'kan looks upon these children he has found in his charge. As well as the exact moment when, at the sound of weapons' fire outside, his gaze sharpens and hardens like cold steel. The two sides of the Sons of Vulkan, so artistically rendered in a matter of seconds.
Honestly made me wonder if he thinks on himself when he was a child as he looks at them. Innocence that must be protected for they may be something greater if they are to live.

Beautiful. Salamanders are my favorite faction because of this humility and attempts at remaining human. He cares for the civilians and he definitely cares for the children. To a fault, in fact. He would clearly die for their survival, despite being an (both symbolic and nigh practically) Angelic being with both tactics and combat prowess surpassing theirs by the thousandfold. Objectively being worth multiple cities of manpower. Yet still cares greatly for each individual lives. It is what I miss the most from the Space Marines. Their ability to humor children and adults alike with their superhuman appearance. No one asked him, but he still found it fitting to lighten the mood to mention his third lung. Just for the sake of the children.
Salamanders are the kindest chapter of the space marines. They'll protect civilians life by any means. If it was the other chapters, they'd probably leave them unless they're a few that are kind. But don't get me started with the mechanicus.
I think the White Scars are also pretty chill with civilians. Ultramarines aren't assholes to them but their disposition is generally cold towards them.
I like how while the Salamander clearly wishes to express compassion & reassurance to the citizens; there is still clearly a difficulty in expressing the necessary emotion for it. They are, after all, made primarily for warfare, and emotions that do not directly feed into that sort of targeted aggression are severely hampered. He needs to intone his words carefully so they don’t come off as hostile…in fact, the biggest display of emotion was when he light-heartedly mentioned his three lungs. I feel like the gesture of projecting strength was easier for the Salamander to express, because it’s just a release of energy…something that is naturally expressed on the battlefield. He does not even seem to possess the ability to smile all that much. All of this just comes together as one of the best animated examples of a Space Marine I think I’ve seen.
Not only is this animation beautiful but they captured every aspect that makes Salamanders the friendly green giants. Papa Vulkan would be proud. Also I dig how they gave Sa'Khan asian features since while salamanders may have charcol black skin due to the high radiation on Nocture, each salamander has very different facial structures with some appering more european, Africian, or Asian
Yes! That second part you mentioned, 100% agreed! I've heard people complaining when Salamanders are shown with black skin but caucasian features, but like, it's every race that turns charcoal black due to the radiation!

I feel so bad when other warhammer fans complain about "Too good" of stories in 40k when in reality if you really look through the lore there have been good stories showcasing cute and wholesome moments in many aspects of the lore, going years back. As mediocre as the ultramarines movie was, one thing I appreciated was the banter between each member, even if they’re novices, it’s genuinely grating if every marine on screen only ever talked in military jargon, even when talking to the children, you can hear the pride in his voice when describing three lungs, his guard for his demeanour is let down, but not his awareness

The company they farmed the animation out to seemed overly obsessed with their facial mo-cap techniques, which i guess were... fine? but everything else about the animation was a big let down. When he knelt down before the children, it actually made me tear up a little. I can barely put into words how well done this is. The scale, the story, the quality. This is what fans have been waiting for since Erasmus uploaded his first Inquisitor Teaser a decade ago. This is what fans have been wanting since Astartes came out. This is amazing. This is worth subscribing to wh+ for. Amazing.
curious to know how much media saturation we'll get of the epic Salz as they are technically a legion of what many would call blackface, which in our current environment will prohibit them from getting much exposure. Vulkan, for example, is a non-African ethnotype with jet black skin, which means any African likeness, or even actor at one point, is not authentic, but any non-African actor or likeness would be considered... problematic by the woke types. Here we clearly have an Asiatic ethnotype, which is a great sleight of hand by the animators, but it is such a short leash, especially when Vulkan himself is considered. It's a bit of a doozy. It pains me as the Salz are just about the dopest legion out there and translate so well to the screen, though I do love me some Blood Angels and White Scars.
I was thinking the same thing about WH+ based on this scene. This is probably the best thing to ever come out of WH40K in terms of storytelling and I make no exaggeration here. It wasn't even the children that got me. It was the clergymen who didn't want to die. That'd be me. The fear and honesty are such great characterizations. Best since that one guardsmen in the Ultramarines novel, can't remember which one though.
@@drlca6601 I dont just mean the children on their own, but him interacting with them. Such a massive beast of war this heavy armor kneeling down to them and still twice their size. That contrasted by his interaction with them. Their fear, curiousity and frailty compared to his Brute form, calmness and certainty. Its not just authentic, but it captures the spirit of the universe and its inhabitants so incredibly well. Thats not just entertainment, thats a story worth diving in to. Thats what got me. But youre right too of course. All the characters were super well done and the emotions portrayed perfectly believable.
Just another example is the last Krieger that begged to be killed in the dropship. The Marine didnt know they were "posessed" so he almost left him to slowly die in agony inside the wreckage, but the salamander in him couldnt let the soldier suffer that much. But he didnt want to grant the alleged traiter a quick death either. So he burned him with his handflamer. Quicker than dying on their own, but still painful enough to be a punishment. Thats proof that the people behind this actually know the universe and care about the story they tell. Thats all I could ever ask for.
I just love the irony GW went with the salamanders, they are the most alien looking, intimidating sight to behold among all the chapters. but they inherited the emperor's love for humanity to a fault.
I love the detail of him having thermal sight rather then the standard night vision of a space marine. Its one of the things that make Salamanders special. As a side: Why did they have to name him Sa'kan, like they are just asking for Deez nuts jokes.
Too many jokes relate back to male genitalia. They were going to lose no matter what name they used. Honestly, considering how many risks he took to calm down and chat with some civilians, I'd say 'deez giant clankin' brass nuts' is a perfectly valid name for this guy. I love it. To me? This is delightfully heroic. Under 95% of Space Marine heroics, they are *NOT* going to take the time to put away their weapon, take off their helmet, and then genuinely take the time to be sweet to these hive-rat urchins. This scene actually got me pretty good. I thought the Sisters of Battle fighting to the death was good. This is... For whatever reason, this actually hit me in the feelings.
Do not mistake his care for human life as something common for all space marines, that just because he is a Salamander, a son of the noble and mighty Vulkan, the story would be very different if he was a zealous Black Templar, a cold and calculating Iron hand or may the emperor have mercy of them a terrifying Carcharodon or a merciless Minotaur.
But it would likely be the same were he one of the Sons of Sanguinius, at least, on the kinder side of that, or one of the Vlka Fenryka, or one of the Khan's mighty riders. Some of the Ultramarines also would show them kindness.
The other 2 "legions" that care about the civilians are The Vlka Fenrika better as The Space Wolves. They literally went to war against *the Inquisition* to save the lives of civilians, to the point of executing several Inquisitors and even a Lord Inquisitor died at their hands.

the salamanders are one of the most brutal chapters of space marines , they specialize in purging Xenos with fire until nothing is left and then they take a vacation ,so when little timmy wakes up he finds his uncle who is a salamander home ,and he lets little timmy play with his flamethrower

It is so refreshing to see a space marine show a more compassionate side. This video really hammers home that one of their roles is protectors of humanity. Brilliant work!
When he got down on one knee and asked the children their names, it brought a tear to my eye. For one so powerful, so mighty to show such compassion and care is truly heart warming. Even in the grim darkness of the far future, where there is only war.... There is also hope, for humanity's soul. I love the Salamanders.

But the next week Sa'Kan might touch down on some rebel world and have to massacre a bunch of guys who are revolting because they have no food or no water and now we're back to regular Imperial activities. Every Space Marine is evil. Even the very nicest, the proverbial Mother Teresa of Space Marines, is still a maniac child soldier given the strength of a demigod warrior and indoctrinated to fight without question for the most hateful, ignorant, and self-destructive totalitarian regime possible. Never forget that the Imperium is an image of mankind's absolute darkest future.
@@VladDracula04 No Astartes are going to be deployed for a food riot. That's for the Arbites and local planetary law enforcement. Even a planetary insurrection wouldn't warrant an Astartes intervention unless the rebels had considerable aid and threatened the Imperium at large. Even if demanded by the Inquisition itself to cull innocent civilians, the Salamanders of all chapters would flatly refuse and they'd have the right as decreed by the Emperor. This wouldn't even be setting a precedent since other chapters have done just that. Perhaps they would pay for such insubordination down the line like the Celestial Lions but the Salamanders are no successor chapter and any overt censure would draw the ire of other Space Marines forces who consider the Salamanders their honorable brothers.

That's how small lamenter currently is. As far as i remember, guintiluiman guisseppe of the smurf already helped them by sending their primaris chapter of lamenters.
Marines deserve more scenes like this, sure a majority of them are more 'duty is all their is' types, but there more than just the Salamanders who genuines care about civilians. White Scars, Lamentors, Blood Angels when they are chill to name a few. Ultramarines to an extent GW really leans too heavily in the Ultramarines being all duty and honor junkies when they also help govern the nicest and actually livable set of planets in the Imperium.
Yep. The Ultramarines who best embody the statesmen role of their gene father definitely recognize that the people of their realm are the most precious resource. Uriel Ventris is one good example of this; a guardsman he forged a friendship with received one of the 4th Captain's Purity Seals as a mark of their bond and his courage.
I mean, the Ultramarines are all about efficency. And having a populace that's happy and healthy does wonders for productivity and stability. Reminds me of there being a story about a manufactury crew doing a strike that actually succeeded (they took the oppurtunity of doing it during an enemy attack, so it was "give us what we want or we all die"), and the Mechanicus overseers were shocked to discover that productivity skyrocketed afterwards.
I'd love to see more to the Custodians. They're only elite bodyguards due to the heresy and general nature of the galaxy. Big E didn't just give them talents for war but they're also intellects and artists too.
Yeah, while a lot of people get tired of always hearing about the Ultramarines, I for one still really like them because they are one of the more level headed, humane, and somewhat caring chapters of Astartes.
I have no idea why Salamanders aren't seen more often in the fluff, because they're the only space marine legion that is really heroic. The rest are basically just the Space SS.

It's entirely likely (like, 99% likely) that even the Priest had never even once seen a Space Marine in the ceramite before. Imagine an actual angel appearing to a priest in a warzone today. That's what it's like for that guy. Also, remember that showing the normal, sane priests doesn't make for good storytelling, so we only ever see the crazy ones. But I'd bet that for every mad one, there's a thousand 'good shepards' around. They just don't have any power.

Ngl, i love that they made his racial phenotype asian to better show off that the skin color of the salamanders is a genetic mutation. Too often you see them depicted as african which leads to a strange meme about them being "the black guy" chapter. Also, shoutout to whoever writes Sa'kan's dialogue, thats some next level stuff.

Hot take: Salamanders are the bravest space marine chapter/legion because they have the courage to make themselves emotionally vulnerable by caring about regular people in such a grim setting.
Look out lamenters, they are like Salamanders but their father is Sanguinius
Most space Wolves when not fighting are like this, some even keep in contact with their clans so the deeds of the dead live on and not just in the chapter.
A lot of chapters are like this honestly. It's just they are over shadowed by the amount of chapters who aren't as kind to standard humans. Even Grimaldus and his brother came to respect the humans who fought in Helsreach, soldier or conscript.

2. Sa'kan humanizes himself to the children by saying "it hurts a little." Because thats what they understand.
3. The gunfire he hears is most likely the Sister from the first episode taking on the mind shackled Krieg.
Eclesiarc priests are charged with caring for their fellow man, and keeping them from corruption. but astartes do not go to worlds where everything is fine and dandy. But i agree, it is a pleasant change of pace, they are still humans after all.

Example on Armageddon, Grimaldus could have killed an ork Warboss, to cause the orks offensive to falter in the entire hive and cause the orks to infighting for the position vacuum.
Salamanders ignore that strategic value to stay in front of the Docks blast doors to protect civilians, Grimaldus kicked them out.

I really enjoy the accuracy of how space marine armor is portrayed. A lot of people forget that these things are huge, heavy, and pack a massive punch. So it makes sense the amount of noise it generates. Now don't shoot me down in comments if I'm completely wrong, I only got into Warhammer recently. But from how the lore describes it this is very accurate.

@@borntopwnyou How Astartes' bodies and minds react to pain is explicitly different from that of normal humans. Which is why the pain glove is used for meditation in the Imperial Fists and their successors and presumably some other Chapters.
So he has two hearts, and three lungs, but one of each has failed. Doesn't this mean he has as many working hearts and lungs as the regular humans? I kind of like that symbolism. The Space Marine standing before the common people and trying to calm them in a moment when he is more like them than he'd usually be.
Two hearts, so that one doesn't need to pump all the blood his body would require on it's own. Three lungs, so that he can better serve in combat situations. And a whole host of various organs within him that makes an Astartes, an Astartes.
If you go back and see all the scenes where he is breathing and speaking, you start to notice how hard he's breathing missing those two organs. Like when he took off to dodge a stray shot later in this episode he's really exhaling to collect himself.
@Nostroman_Praetor thankfully, those can be replaced, so Sa'kan, should he survive his confrontation with the Deathmark, will be right as rain afterwards.

What i love about salamanders is while other astartes chapters see humans as below them and expandables, salamanders wont tolerate a single human life's casuality and get strenght from their humanity and remember who they fight for

dont mean to be rude but my engineering brain hates when people get maths so incredibly wrong 2 meters would make him a midget marine I am nearly 2 meters 1.86cm or 6,1 in feet to be exact, a Primaris marine is around 2.5 meters or 8,3 in feet.

Not many Chapters view humans as expendable or below them. For the average, protecting normal humans is the reason they exist. They simply prefer to defend humans by destroying the threat to them whereas the Salamanders prefer to guard them.
Whoever did the sound design for this truly captured how heavy and clunky his power armor is.
God they nailed the Salamander his attitude is perfect for a Space Marine and you can tell he's trying so hard to reassure them he's a kind person. Also the scale of making him look so incredibly massive next the humans is just absurd. I love that they made him feel so big and terrifying yet gentle and kind.
It's not absurd at all. That is the size of the average space marine. They are genetically augmented to grow into giants but still fast as oiled lightning.

Primarily due to Vulkan, the absolute unit that he is, is the biggest of the primarchs - hence it stands to reason that Vulkan's Space Marines who utilise his genes are also absolute units who dwarf other Space Marines.

The Salamanders and the Ultramarines are by far the most human compared to the other legions. What I’ve always found fascinating about how the salamanders interact with civilians is that they still have human emotions because they’re allowed to remain in contact with their birth family even after crossing the rubicon. I think they need to more stories like this very cool.
The Blood Ravens Chapter from the Dawn of War games, is also like that too.

Recent GW stuff doesn't help, but there are actually a few caring examples. Like in Helsreach, there's a priest character who actually leaves the safety of Stormherald (imperator class titan) when he realizes the sheer number of civilians probably traumatized by their home being torn apart by the war.
Contrary to what the famous warhammer stories may depict, there are more ecclesiarchs who are actually good and caring people than raving lunatics like van dire..

So he had a i can fix all my fuckups type of attitude about his sons except for the lost and the damned with the second likely having his soul corrupted by chaos or turned against him in some other way way while the damned 11th was very likely raised by xenos likely the Rangan or some other reallt powerful xenos species that turned him agaisnt the Emperor completely things that brought him great shame and are the reason the two where ereased from all records while the genetically stable sons of both lost chapters where quietly assimilated into the ultramatines. Yeah he likes to pretend as if the primarchs are nothing but tools to him but it that was the case he wouldn't have grown so attached to so many of them much less allowed Horus to borderline kill him if he really was as heartless as he claimed to be in private with Malcador then he would have killed Horus immediately instead of figthing him 1 on 1 and trying to reason with a fully chaos corrupted a Horus. He also wouldn't have built special chambers for all his sons in his palace after all his end goal was for humanity to become stable and as powerful as during the dark age of technology minus the AI that caused its downfall. The biggest character trait the Emperor has is the fact he is a hypocrite he likes to rule and influence humanity but prefers to do it from the shadows indirectly and he just wishes for mankind to be self sufficent to know they will be safe without him and likely he planned to spend a lot of time with his sons since outside of perpetuals their the only other beings he can relate too. As to why he is such a genocidal asshole well he has been behind most Empires in human history he is very familiar with politics and while he loves humanity as a collective he is far too ancient and emotionally disconnected from the common man as to care for them in a personal level even if he likes to basically read all your memories and thoughs the moment he meets you to give off the atmosphere that he is a friend you know your whole life. The Emperor as powerful as he is he is still flawed a very flawed man who focuses too much on the future and the mistskes of his past (dude is responsible for most religions of humanities past as he used to see it as a way to unify humanity and is also a factor to why he is such a atheist he sees theology as his personal fuck up) to live in the present that is why he is always rushing he can only look to the horizon unable to see how his actions in the present can have terrible ripple effects in the future dude really needs to lay off the tarot cards. Still that's what makes the Emperor such a intresting character he pretends to be this charismatic caring individual as a fassade pretending to be a machiavelian cold calculative individual while he hides his true feelints and intentions getting irked and acting like a edgy teenager when one of his sons or friends can see through all his masks and understand the emperors true feelings and intentions something he really disklikes. Still this is just my opinion of him after reading way too many books and content about the bastard.

@@randolphbienmateo8174 I gotta be honest, I actually found this whole thing very touching. Space Marines are often described as so powerful, so altered, so big/strong/impossibly fast that it scares the living snot out of normal people. And rightly so.
They are regarded as barely human. Again, rightly so. They're so far above normal people, and separated by such vast differences in cultures, that most humans seem to suffer in Space Marine hands, even while being protected even in 'good guy' hands. The Ultramarines protect people, but I don't think the Space Wolves do. Those guys have thralls. Most of the Space Marine chapters aren't... *nice* to normal people, and tend to behave like superior jerks even to people who are extremely accomplished.
For him to allow himself to be vulnerable. Disarm himself. Move slowly. Talk calmly and carefully to scared people. To answer children. To kneel before humanity and behave kindly even as he swivels around to protect it, while pretty badly injured by Space Marine Standards.
That's amazing. That genuinely got me in the feels.

It's kind of sad, but I also appreciate, that Sa'kan has to explain his literal black skin and red eyes are just how Salamanders look and that he isn't touched by Chaos.
It goes to show how badly the Imperium has been affected that most civilians don't even recognize the especially unique physical feature of one of the first chapters.
Not really there are so few space marines, how many people know what 1/9th of navy seals unit insignia looks like? Without looking it up describe seal team 2's unit badge.

If there was a unit of Seals who all had a really characteristic physical trait, like all the members are exceptionally tall, that'd be a closer comparison and it would still be kinda sad if an operator had to go about in his day to day like: "Yes I am just this tall, nothing is wrong with me."
It's not really their fault.. a civilian seeing an astartes in modern 40k is very rare contrary to how some forms of media portray.. now back in the days where the emperor walked it was far more common but since the writing and implementation of the codex astartes where the legions were broken to form chapters of just 1000 marines, it has made civilian contact with the astartes far, far more rare.. but if it comforts you, there are many stories of salamanders going out of their way to dig through rubble to help children find their beloved toy.. many stories of vulkan's sons helping civilians find their pets after a battle.. there is even a short story of a salamander handing over their chapter banner to a little girl asking her to protect it coz he had to hold off a tyranid swarm.. he died but the little girl survived and gave back the chapter banner to the salamander reinforcements who arrived..

It's actually kinda important for him to state that he isn't touched by chaos as no other astartes would have the features a salamanders astartes has. The main reason is a malfunction in the meloncronic organ which regulates the amount of melanin in the astartes skin to protect against radiation. An astartes would normally have a northern European or Mediterranean skin tone, depending on certain variables such as how long they are exposed to solar radiation, on ships or within their monasteries they would have a light complexion and when deployed on planets will tan. When a salamanders astartes interacts with the unique radiation of Nocturns star, it damages their meloncronic organ, forcing it to overcharge to a permanent onyx black. Other chapters have malfunctions with their meloncronic organ like the raven guard and their successors, but the salamanders is especially egregious.
I like that he assures the survivors he means them no harm and at the same time, tells them the reality of the situation they're in.

2:50-I love the detail here; you can see the warmth and kindness in his eye, like a candle flame or a family hearth, as Sa'kan looks upon these children he has found in his charge. As well as the exact moment when, at the sound of weapons' fire outside, his gaze sharpens and hardens like cold steel. The two sides of the Sons of Vulkan, so artistically rendered in a matter of seconds.
Honestly made me wonder if he thinks on himself when he was a child as he looks at them. Innocence that must be protected for they may be something greater if they are to live.

Beautiful. Salamanders are my favorite faction because of this humility and attempts at remaining human. He cares for the civilians and he definitely cares for the children. To a fault, in fact. He would clearly die for their survival, despite being an (both symbolic and nigh practically) Angelic being with both tactics and combat prowess surpassing theirs by the thousandfold. Objectively being worth multiple cities of manpower. Yet still cares greatly for each individual lives.
It is what I miss the most from the Space Marines. Their ability to humor children and adults alike with their superhuman appearance. No one asked him, but he still found it fitting to lighten the mood to mention his third lung. Just for the sake of the children.

That's a great touch for the Salamander. Once he sees they're human civilians he takes off his helmet so that they can see he's not with the Necrons.
Salamanders are the kindest chapter of the space marines. They'll protect civilians life by any means. If it was the other chapters, they'd probably leave them unless they're a few that are kind.
But don't get me started with the mechanicus.

I like how while the Salamander clearly wishes to express compassion & reassurance to the citizens; there is still clearly a difficulty in expressing the necessary emotion for it.
They are, after all, made primarily for warfare, and emotions that do not directly feed into that sort of targeted aggression are severely hampered.
He needs to intone his words carefully so they don’t come off as hostile…in fact, the biggest display of emotion was when he light-heartedly mentioned his three lungs.
I feel like the gesture of projecting strength was easier for the Salamander to express, because it’s just a release of energy…something that is naturally expressed on the battlefield.
He does not even seem to possess the ability to smile all that much.
All of this just comes together as one of the best animated examples of a Space Marine I think I’ve seen.
Not only is this animation beautiful but they captured every aspect that makes Salamanders the friendly green giants. Papa Vulkan would be proud.
Also I dig how they gave Sa'Khan asian features since while salamanders may have charcol black skin due to the high radiation on Nocture, each salamander has very different facial structures with some appering more european, Africian, or Asian

I feel so bad when other warhammer fans complain about "Too good" of stories in 40k when in reality if you really look through the lore there have been good stories showcasing cute and wholesome moments in many aspects of the lore, going years back. Yes the main focus of warhammer is grim dark, but it isn't 100% grim dark. There are good things here and there. Salamanders as a chapter as a whole literally points to that.

I adore the trope of friendly characters who know they look scary calmly explaining that they're aware of it, but there's nothing to be afraid of.
It's fitting too, since Astartes are called angels, and Biblical angels commonly introduced themselves with "be not afraid".

As mediocre as the ultramarines movie was, one thing I appreciated was the banter between each member, even if they’re novices, it’s genuinely grating if every marine on screen only ever talked in military jargon, even when talking to the children, you can hear the pride in his voice when describing three lungs, his guard for his demeanour is let down, but not his awareness

The company they farmed the animation out to seemed overly obsessed with their facial mo-cap techniques, which i guess were... fine? but everything else about the animation was a big let down. When he knelt down before the children, it actually made me tear up a little. I can barely put into words how well done this is. The scale, the story, the quality. This is what fans have been waiting for since Erasmus uploaded his first Inquisitor Teaser a decade ago. This is what fans have been wanting since Astartes came out. This is amazing. This is worth subscribing to wh+ for. Amazing.
curious to know how much media saturation we'll get of the epic Salz as they are technically a legion of what many would call blackface, which in our current environment will prohibit them from getting much exposure. Vulkan, for example, is a non-African ethnotype with jet black skin, which means any African likeness, or even actor at one point, is not authentic, but any non-African actor or likeness would be considered... problematic by the woke types. Here we clearly have an Asiatic ethnotype, which is a great sleight of hand by the animators, but it is such a short leash, especially when Vulkan himself is considered. It's a bit of a doozy. It pains me as the Salz are just about the dopest legion out there and translate so well to the screen, though I do love me some Blood Angels and White Scars.
I was thinking the same thing about WH+ based on this scene. This is probably the best thing to ever come out of WH40K in terms of storytelling and I make no exaggeration here. It wasn't even the children that got me. It was the clergymen who didn't want to die. That'd be me. The fear and honesty are such great characterizations. Best since that one guardsmen in the Ultramarines novel, can't remember which one though.
@@drlca6601 I dont just mean the children on their own, but him interacting with them. Such a massive beast of war this heavy armor kneeling down to them and still twice their size. That contrasted by his interaction with them.
Their fear, curiousity and frailty compared to his Brute form, calmness and certainty.
Its not just authentic, but it captures the spirit of the universe and its inhabitants so incredibly well. Thats not just entertainment, thats a story worth diving in to. Thats what got me.
But youre right too of course. All the characters were super well done and the emotions portrayed perfectly believable.
Just another example is the last Krieger that begged to be killed in the dropship.
The Marine didnt know they were "posessed" so he almost left him to slowly die in agony inside the wreckage, but the salamander in him couldnt let the soldier suffer that much. But he didnt want to grant the alleged traiter a quick death either. So he burned him with his handflamer. Quicker than dying on their own, but still painful enough to be a punishment.
Thats proof that the people behind this actually know the universe and care about the story they tell. Thats all I could ever ask for.

I just love the irony GW went with the salamanders, they are the most alien looking, intimidating sight to behold among all the chapters. but they inherited the emperor's love for humanity to a fault.
The only Chapters more intimidating in appearance than the Salamanders are the Black Dragons and the Carcharodons. And those guys are hardcore.

I love the detail of him having thermal sight rather then the standard night vision of a space marine. Its one of the things that make Salamanders special.
As a side: Why did they have to name him Sa'kan, like they are just asking for Deez nuts jokes.
Too many jokes relate back to male genitalia. They were going to lose no matter what name they used.
Honestly, considering how many risks he took to calm down and chat with some civilians, I'd say 'deez giant clankin' brass nuts' is a perfectly valid name for this guy.
I love it. To me? This is delightfully heroic.
Under 95% of Space Marine heroics, they are *NOT* going to take the time to put away their weapon, take off their helmet, and then genuinely take the time to be sweet to these hive-rat urchins. This scene actually got me pretty good.
I thought the Sisters of Battle fighting to the death was good. This is... For whatever reason, this actually hit me in the feelings.

When we all actually know that pain to anyone else would be absolutely excruciating.
Do not mistake his care for human life as something common for all space marines, that just because he is a Salamander, a son of the noble and mighty Vulkan, the story would be very different if he was a zealous Black Templar, a cold and calculating Iron hand or may the emperor have mercy of them a terrifying Carcharodon or a merciless Minotaur.
But it would likely be the same were he one of the Sons of Sanguinius, at least, on the kinder side of that, or one of the Vlka Fenryka, or one of the Khan's mighty riders. Some of the Ultramarines also would show them kindness.

They literally went to war against *the Inquisition* to save the lives of civilians, to the point of executing several Inquisitors and even a Lord Inquisitor died at their hands.

A good guy for this bunch of people, sure. But the next week Sa'Kan might touch down on some rebel world and have to massacre a bunch of guys who are revolting because they have no food or no water and now we're back to regular Imperial activities.
Every Space Marine is evil. Even the very nicest, the proverbial Mother Teresa of Space Marines, is still a maniac child soldier given the strength of a demigod warrior and indoctrinated to fight without question for the most hateful, ignorant, and self-destructive totalitarian regime possible. Never forget that the Imperium is an image of mankind's absolute darkest future.
@@VladDracula04 No Astartes are going to be deployed for a food riot. That's for the Arbites and local planetary law enforcement. Even a planetary insurrection wouldn't warrant an Astartes intervention unless the rebels had considerable aid and threatened the Imperium at large. Even if demanded by the Inquisition itself to cull innocent civilians, the Salamanders of all chapters would flatly refuse and they'd have the right as decreed by the Emperor. This wouldn't even be setting a precedent since other chapters have done just that. Perhaps they would pay for such insubordination down the line like the Celestial Lions but the Salamanders are no successor chapter and any overt censure would draw the ire of other Space Marines forces who consider the Salamanders their honorable brothers.

Marines deserve more scenes like this, sure a majority of them are more 'duty is all their is' types, but there more than just the Salamanders who genuines care about civilians. White Scars, Lamentors, Blood Angels when they are chill to name a few. Ultramarines to an extent GW really leans too heavily in the Ultramarines being all duty and honor junkies when they also help govern the nicest and actually livable set of planets in the Imperium.
Yep. The Ultramarines who best embody the statesmen role of their gene father definitely recognize that the people of their realm are the most precious resource. Uriel Ventris is one good example of this; a guardsman he forged a friendship with received one of the 4th Captain's Purity Seals as a mark of their bond and his courage.
Dark Angels meanwhile be like...
I mean, the Ultramarines are all about efficency. And having a populace that's happy and healthy does wonders for productivity and stability.
Reminds me of there being a story about a manufactury crew doing a strike that actually succeeded (they took the oppurtunity of doing it during an enemy attack, so it was "give us what we want or we all die"), and the Mechanicus overseers were shocked to discover that productivity skyrocketed afterwards.
I'd love to see more to the Custodians. They're only elite bodyguards due to the heresy and general nature of the galaxy. Big E didn't just give them talents for war but they're also intellects and artists too.
Yeah, while a lot of people get tired of always hearing about the Ultramarines, I for one still really like them because they are one of the more level headed, humane, and somewhat caring chapters of Astartes.

Like other, seeing a priest being this sane is very unusual, yet warming. They showing the "Human" side of a priest...
Its a big Imperium, theres bound to be a few sane priests here and there.
It's entirely likely (like, 99% likely) that even the Priest had never even once seen a Space Marine in the ceramite before. Imagine an actual angel appearing to a priest in a warzone today. That's what it's like for that guy.
Also, remember that showing the normal, sane priests doesn't make for good storytelling, so we only ever see the crazy ones. But I'd bet that for every mad one, there's a thousand 'good shepards' around. They just don't have any power.
