I agree with you. Frog it! Make the garment that you want. It’s a beautiful yarn. Nothing wrong with striving for a well made garment so that you can wear them with pride! 💜💜

First, I have to tell you, if you are not already aware, you are an absolute delight. I find myself chuckling at so many things you say! As for your “Rage,” over your cardigan. I get it! I’ve had the same feelings. We spend SO MUCH TIME with each garment we make and when they don’t turn out as we hoped the disappointment can quickly turn to anger and frustration. I wish I had something more helpful to you than, “I feel your pain,” but I do feel it, because I have felt it too, and will likely feel it again in the very near future!
Anyway, back to you. You are adorable, and your make up is on point! 💖

I can't believe someone said you're looking for perfection like that's a bad thing! With how much time, money, and skill that goes into these projects, we 100% have the right to want them to be specific ways. Also, arm-hole depth on sweater schematics are so important, especially for bigger sizes. That is a measurement I look at to know how well the pattern was graded, especially for raglans. I don't want a raglan with a huge arm hole because the pattern was graded without taking actual bodies into consideration. I am glad Claire is open to feedback! That's the mark of a really good designer.

Oh, to have that yarn colorway that you love so much turn into a cardigan with serious fit issues. So frustrating! But it is also radically cool that you and the actual designer are going to talk about it. Good for you! Loving your Lento and the scarf. You've more than met your 5-skein goal. Hooray! You spun your own hair--how cool. What I understand about human hair is that it lacks most of the properties that makes wool and even plant-fibers and silk amenable for spinning. Do try again with a diff proportion of wool! Haee fun with your sister!

I agree with you that you, and you only, get to decide what to do with your cardigan and anybody else's opinion shouldn't hold you from doing what feels the best - not even your past self, you fellow anxious girlie, you are allowed to change your mind!😅 and even if it's true that one month of knitting is a lot of work and your disappointment is so valid, you also deserve to feel 100% good in the garments you make, especially when the yarn's so special!

What they said! I agree that you should get the piece that you were hoping for and you have every right to feel disappointment and rage when you do your due diligence and don´t get the desired results. I am much more a process knitter than product maker, so I don´t have any problems ripping things out and starting over. In fact, I found two WIPs from ages (seriously... decades!) ago that I ripped out today. But now I have some lovely yarn (sweater quantities) to make new things. Rachel, I hope you know that your thoughts and comments are great. It would be crazy fun to hang out and knit with you.

Your makeup looks lovely. I vote for making a new Cal Cardi with the other yarn and try for a better fit, then decide what to do with this one! 😊

The yarn for the KAL cardigan knitted up so lovely. I agree with you about the fit. Mia from Knit and Grace has some great videos on adjusting patterns to fit those of us with nonstandard bodies. In addition to your suggestions for pattern designers, I think they should also include shoulder measurements. if I knit to my full bust size, my sweaters are way to big.

  • @vindeljay
    @vindeljay 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I have recently started knitting a vest with my "hand-spun" first time. I have learnt so much about gauge since doing this, because my yarn is not standard so just does not fit the pattern requirements. Hence, I have had to really delve into how gauge works in a way I never have before. It has made me realise I have to know my own measurements in detail to aid the process. I count rows and cm or inches at the same time. I used an existing vest's measurements and my body to check the fit, frequently. I also had to find a basic pattern close to a gauge I might get to make the math easier. I am counting rows as I go and measuring all the time, so far good, even though my gauge has changed 3 times. It's has been liberating doing this exercise for fit. Style is different. I went shopping and tried on so many "styles" of sweaters/cardigans to find out what suites my shape the best. I discovered I can't wear drop shoulder, it makes me look like a box. So, maybe you need to discover what style or design compliments you the best.

I'm glad you're feeling a bit better about your Kal Cardigan! The yarn is soooo beautiful and it needs to be knit into something that you're going to love just as much! Also LOL @ knitting your own hair 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think I’m going to get a few more skeins so I have enough to make a second cardigan, but probably a different pattern. And spinning your own hair is so weird. You should try it just for the experience!

I hate tight sleeves so I always study a design on many different people before I will knit it, if I’m afraid the sleeves will be tight. Many designers like designs that are boxy in the body (like a square, almost) with tight sticksleeves started halfway down to the elbow. First, can’t wear a coat over that. Second, tight sleeves are so uncomfortable! The Kal cardi has a specific construction that gives a long shoulderline and therefore a dropped shoulder with a lot of fabric created on the way down there. A regular dropped shoulder construction where you cast on all the sts and knit the back panel back and forth first, then pick up sts along the shoulders for the front, will create a better fit with less fabric under the sleeves. I love the purple colour on you! Maybe you could keep it as a cozy cardi to curl up in at home? 💜

You’re so smart to study before casting on. I try to do that but need to do more comprehensive reviews!

You make some great points about plus size patterns. I also wanted to make the KAL cardigan because it came out so great for Leslie, and I can see what you mean about the arms. This is kind of how I felt when I finished the stria, there is a lot of fabric in the armhole area but the arms themselves are more fitted. I don’t get it - just because my bust is bigger doesn’t mean my arms increase at the same rate. I’ll probably wait till my bust returns to normal before making another sweater or at least wait until I’m not nursing anymore. Anyway, I think it looks great on you but if you’re not comfortable in it I think frogging or adjusting is a great idea!

Hi Rachel! I have a larger upper arm and I prefer a looser fit on my upper arm. I always look for upper arm measurements on patterns to verify the arm. I prefer Raglan, Dolman and set-in sleeves and usually don’t purchase drop sleeve patterns as they tend to be too small for me in the upper arm. I have a stash of the same yarn! Purple girl here too!!!

Thanks for sharing! I need to expand my vocabulary about sleeve methods. I’m most familiar with raglan and drop shoulder, but there are so many more out there!

Thank you for being you (I always laugh at least once per episode)
I agree with the measurements that you went over. New Wave Knitting has created a couple patterns that have these extra measurements along with calculations added into the pattern to fit any gauge and any weight yarn. Right now I’m knitting her Staple Tee for her KAL. Let me know if you take a look at the pattern because I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Another drop shoulder cardigan that I made is For Keeps by Samantha Guerin. I knit the front and back panels a bit deeper to accommodate for the girls. It’s my best fitting cardigan. Just an idea. For me, drop shoulders aren’t my favorite. I don’t find them flattering in general, but For Keeps seems to be an exception.

First off: you look great with makeup on. You look great with makeup off. The colours you chose really suit you and whether YOU feel good, is all that matters.
About the KAL cardigan: if you’re not happy with it, frog it and make something you’re happy with. Because there is no use having a garment you don’t feel good in. It’d just sit in your closet or make you feel less than wonderful every time you’re wearing it. There is no such thing as the perfect fit for everyone. Even within one single size, individual variations are going to make a difference. Add individual preferences, hang-ups, things we’re proud of and things we prefer to hide, and you’ll have a different ideal item of clothing for each and every one of us. No matter how others tell us something is ’perfect’ on us, if we don’t feel good in a certain item of clothing, we don’t feel good in it.
That being said, you’re very wise to live with it for a while. You might change your mind. The great thing about knitting is that it gives you the freedom to decide for ourselves. Keep it or frog it, or even give it away because someone you love borrows it and looks so stunning and happy and comfortable in it you end up deciding there was a reason you knitted it and it just revealed itself to you.
Personally, I think the sweater looks good on you, but your body language confirms you’re not happy. It’s how YOU feel that makes or breaks a garment.
About your goals: yay for extra time! And even if life happens and it would mean another change of plans, so what? Life is messy. Stuff happens.
Your Lento looks so good! This seems like one of those sweaters you want to live in forever. The colour is so you and so soft and wonderful. I can’t wait to see it finished.
About Tour De Fleece: Yay! Awesome! I’ll be participating in a way, but not as a member of a group. My goal is to simply see if I can manage to spin at least some every day. That’s my goal. Period. Next year I might formally join a group. Right now my life is way too crazy to make the commitment to a group. I’m really looking forward to your videos!

Why do we knit? Sure, we love having a finished product, but elementally we knit because we love to knit - so you got to enjoy that with your (1st?) KAL cardigan AND you might be able to enjoy the knitting again! You probably won’t wear it the way it is. I agree that there’s too much ease - and it rides up in the back. Follow your gut! And enjoy all the knitting. 🧶

I wonder if you could steek the armholes a few rows and then just have to re-knit the sleeves and not the whole thing? I usually revert to sweater surgery rather than frogging! 😅

Ok first of all the make up looks great and your hair looks amazing today. Second I’m so sorry you kal cardigan isn’t being what you want it to be! From my perspective it only looks weird proportionally when you’re standing with your arms out. But it’s about what you want and what you feel awesome in! I fully support you keeping or frogging. The color is incredible on you tho!

Very sorry you're unhappy with your KAL cardigan, but the colorway of the yarn is gorgeous and your knitting looks perfectly executed. If you elect to knit the KAL again in a different yarn, maybe keep the original until the second rendition is completed and THEN make your frogging decision on the first. And if the second rendition still doesn't make you happy, then perhaps the quest for the perfect cardigan will continue. I have yet to find the perfect cardigan for myself (sigh).

There is a problem with ratios for plus-sizes. Btw I am a plus size knitter, so I am writing based on experience. I looked at the Kal Cardigan page and all the plus sizes look bad with the tiny arms that don't fit with the body. Designer have to think differently about bigger bodies, because size inclusivity should be about making garments that make us feel good in our bodies, not just "fit" in theory

    • @rachelisknitting

Yes I completely agree. It’s endlessly frustrating.
