Sulyvahn isn't the archbishop or pontiff of Cathedral of the Deep, he just claimed himself pontiff of something and he's the tyrannical ruler of the Boreal Valley. And Aldrich is the deity of the church, not the head. The archdeacons are the head(s) of the church.
I actually just summoned an NPC (that died halfway through the fight) and....kinda just...lucked out ? Tears of denial saved my ass and I managed to beat him on 1st try. I still cannot believe how fucking lucky i was that he aggro'd the NPC.

@@justanotherguy7984 Eh. I already learned to deal with his aggression in phase 1. The clone basically doubles his attacks, and can even get behind you if you're unlucky. I can understand the point of leaving it alive, but I find the fight easier when it's dead. Plus, it's a big easy punish when he goes to resummon it.

His first hit is rly easy to parry with Caestus bc you see the attack coming and you can bait that same attack out several time by keeping enough distance towards him. He's way easier when you fight him from a distance because he will fuck your ass up if you get too close.

Juan Punch Man It’s easy to mess it up though, and it’s one of his heavier hitting attacks. I was trying the parry strat a few times, and on one run where I need a parry or two more I just decided screw that and beat him to death.

Key difference is only one sword that you can easily parry or run away from. Isshin's 6-hit combo is much worse

It is impossible to deflect Genichiro's 9-hit combo in it's entirety. The second last hit will always be a block. This is why for no damage runs, players back off when he does the combo.

Pontiff Sulyvhan. One of the hardest fights in the game, is against a pope. Admiitedly this guy is like the second greatest evil in the game (First being Aldrich). But still he's a pope. Never thought a pope could be so awesome/badass. Also he has the best theme transition from first phase to second phase.

You know, I constantly see people on Sulyvahn videos say "parry him!", but I have learned an even deeper secret... stay to his sides, and don't dodge backwards. Seriously. He will only do one of 3 easily readable attacks following one of his combo starters if you're to his side, and then he'll either stop his combo, giving you time to attack, or (rarely) do his spin-to-win, then stop his combo, giving you time to attack. Then phase 2 is way easier as long as you don't distance yourself from him unnecessarily, and take advantage of his lengthy summoning animation to rip him apart.
I do use parry strats on him sometimes, but only if my build involves a weapon that can parry, and that's rare. Or if I'm using a greathammer.

Yep, definitely agreed on the positioning. Not only does it make him more predictable but some of his attacks will outright miss you due to his size.
You definitely don't need to parry to make this boss simple, it's just that his speed and aggression are a significant step up from previous bosses so it takes awhile to get used to.

Yeah. Unlike some of the humanoid bosses in this game, it's good if you stay close to him because almost all of his attacks are gap closers.

Actually I prefer removing the clone, as it gives an opportunity to attack him a lot when he re-summons the clone. So I always try attack them together to beat him.

Depends. Once you get the timing and can see the blindspots in his swings his moveset becomes manageable even at his faster speed. The clone's movements mean much fewer blindspots, so I'd rather just kill the clone and keep him fast, but singular.

This is the only boss in Dark Souls that I thought I couldn't beat.
It also taught me to level up vitality more than just four times.
He's the only boss that I had to google "how to beat ". Found out greatshields are really useful
The pontiff was the only boss in the entire game (including dlcs) that after a couple of atemps made me think "This guy is invincible"

its amazing how much this boss's difficulty fluctuates depending on whether or not you are good at parrying. If you are, then you can't lose to this boss. But if you can't parry then it is one of the toughest fights in the game.
The abyss watchers and sulyvahn were the two bosses that were the make or break it for me. Each of them took me like 15-20 tries, but after them I never got stuck again.
They were actually my favorite bosses in the early game as a DS first timer, I just liked how straight forward they were tbh

I was so scared of meeting Pontiff Sulyvahn. All my friends kept telling me how many times they died to him. My hands were shaking when the boss fight started. But it only took me 2 tries. During the first fight I noticed that rolling wasn't very effective and if I simply walked around him while he was swinging I could avoid most of the strikes and get some good hits in. When he split in 2, it was trying to watch the mirrored moves for the correct timing to dodge. I actually had a harder time with the Abyss Watchers. But I will never forget the feeling of dread I felt when I started walking down the church aisle to the chanting music.

Hahahahaha! I feel your pain, fellas. This is the boss that got me to subscribe to PlayStation so I could summon help and even then I had been intentionally staying low level and I couldn’t get any help so I spent two days leveling.
I’m currently doing a SL1 run through and I have to say the game is COMPLETELY different doing it this way. The stuff you learn...did you know you can use an alluring skull on the Deacons? Did you know the club bashes just about everything to the ground in the Catacombs so it can’t attack?? Yeah, those fast dudes that throw knives...EASY with the club.
You typically don’t resort to that stuff though walking around at lvl 50. I’m actually finding the game easier at lvl 1 and that sounds weird to say 😜
