I like the quote "I gotta get better at that, this is learning, we're doing a homework for the next time" as one of the best description of Dark Souls boss fights.
That's me everytime i fight tough bosses for the first time lol, and probably many people as well..
So I’ve played every Souls game and even repaired my ps3 so I can play demon’s souls, and I can say that now there have been some bosses I was able to defeat in one run since I’ve played so much souls borne, but honestly I’m so used to losing that when I win first try on the first playthrough it feels weird
Unless it's some cheesy ass boss like the bed of chaos in which case you just want to die irl everytime it kills you
As I was reading this he said it lol 😂
Took me two hours to learn all the phases but Gael was the fun fight in the game imo.
Phase 1: Not too bad, I can dodge everything if I time it right.
Phase 2: Gael, what are you doing?
Phase 3: Santa stop, pls.
Phase 1: Block
Phase 2: Fuck
Phase 3: ...
Phase 1 is the hardest tho
@@daniel0_o861 I agree, when i first time meet gael, i have trouble only in first phase.
Phase 1: OKAY
Phase 2: DAMN CAPE
PHASE 3: FUCK LIGHTNING
I never had any issues with Gael. I beat him first try in my first fight with him. Not saying he isn't tough, and you definitely have to keep on your toes, but not as problematic as some of the other bosses.
Gael is one of those really hard fights that you desperately don't want to end. Sign of a perfect boss fight
I felt so guilty when I beat him on my third try with my OP pyromancer. Should've given him chonkier fire resistance stats, though it wouldn't have really made sense.
@@rainestar6781 I was about to beat him on my second try but I killed myself because I wanted to fight him again
I've always liked more of these 1v1 boss fights against swordsmen rather than large monsters. Demons took me like 20 tries even though they are not that hard when you learn them, Gael only 2. And it made me sad, because I was expecting so much more. The dynamics of a fight just feels so much more better when you have almost normal size enemy lunging at very high speeds towards you and you need to react in time. Gael and Nameless are imo best bosses of ds3. With large monsters its just running around half the time either them chasing you or you chasing a window to hit them.
I know it sounds stupid maybe, but i had been playing DS3 many times until i reached NG+7 just so i can fight Gael again, damn this is where i wanted bonfire ascetic exist in DS3 so people who is loving the certain boss can fight them over and over again with the difficulty spikes up..
Fr, even when I was getting my ass handed to me not once was i mad about it. That way I got more out of the boss fight.
You can tell fromsoft really wanted to go all out on this boss.. the big desolate arena.. the boss’s crazy a varied move set, the music the freaking lightening! They wanted to go out with a bang!
AdvancedHybrid more like they hastily put DS3 together and called it a day.. No wonder it is so uninspired, dull and linear xD
@@wallacesousuke1433 What at all does that have to do with the fact that Gael's fight was an excellent way to end an excellent series?
SP1CE_ DR1P excellent series? It could've been way better, just like Bloodborne turned out to be (not a series, of course, but a game).. Sadly every DS game has serious issues that take away part of their potential excellence.
Anyway, as for Gael, he's not that interesting at all, pretty generic you ask me.
@@wallacesousuke1433 The comment was there more to question why the criticism was about ds3 in it's entirety, rather than the singular boss itself. To each their own opinion, but I won't deny that ds3, as well as the other ds games, have a fair share of flaws that can take away from the experience. But c'mon, Gael's theme though, you can't be disappointed with that
SP1CE_ DR1P well, fair enough, my first comment was indeed out of place/off topic xD
I'm not a big fan of fast, brute force/heavy hitting berserkers like Gael, I prefer the elegance of Friede, the Dancer and Fume Knight, but I'm not gonna deny that he's indeed a great boss, probably the best final boss in a Souls game yet.
Gael making a backflip through the air while shooting his machine-gun crossbow, with lightning in the background will always be the peak of epicness in fromsoft games
For sure
this move really made me scream with impassion during bossfight
Everybody gangster till santa pulls out the machine gun crossbow.
So that’s where Isshin learned it from.
Everybody gangsta till santa helps you kill a hooker and a guy in a chair, time travels and gets super buff (a little thicc too), makes you time travel by touchin a girl's eggs, kills old men, attacks with his broken sword, pulls out the machine gun crossbow, becomes a god, kills you 50 times, you kill him, gives you an existential crisis about how santa is actually you and repeats your actions as the player, you explore the rest of the arena, get your ass handed to you by a guy with two swords and a faith build, and makes you cry yourself to sleep.

jold 317 yeah he is old af
jold 317 yeah, the only thing that kept him alive is the dark soul,he got ripped af during all this time lmao
Wow, that actually good quote.
Gael was actually not driven mad or taking the dark soul for himself by any means! The girl in the attic in Ariandel is his niece, and he vowed to get the dark soul pigment for her so she could paint a safe world with it for humanity to live in. When he learned that the pygmy lords blood was dry, he consumed them in order to absorb the dark soul with full knowledge that you, who he had met several times, would come to defeat the maddened version of him and take his liquid blood instead of their dried blood. He knew what he was doing. He didn't go mad. He sacrificed himself so his blood could become the pigment his niece needed, knowing that you would deliver it to her. Despite what may appear to be madness, Gaels intentions were pure, and by defeating him you are giving he and his niece exactly what they want and exactly what the world needs :) kinda sad, but very heroic. Happy ending to a sad story.
EDIT: I have been informed a few hundred times now that "uncle" is a mistranslation and not to be taken so literally, as it is an honorific in Japanese. Hopefully the slurry of corrections will end now lol
i don't think they are related though

Son_Of_Perdition she does in fact call him uncle gael but to my knowledge they are not actually related.
@Isaac Fitzwilliam @Son_Of_Perdition this is because is a translation error, in the Japanese version, the painted girl refers to him using a term that is commonly used to refer to friendly old people (usually over 40), but the closest translation in English is uncle

Nice. I'm actually giggling over here. Thanks.
Everyone seems to have had a problem with Gael but I beat him first try. It's generally the bosses that no one else has problems with that give me fits.
Nemesis M&M yeah we all have our strengths and weaknesses. I also beat gael on my first try and i find the king of the storm phase harder than the nameless king phase.
Gaels fight is so sad. He's an old friend that went mad fulfilling his deeds restoring an entire reality. The only way to honor him is to finish his quest, take the black soul from him and bring it to the girl. Oddly enough his own death is what he would have wanted (provided you actually bring it to her)😭 rip uncle Gael.
I think that was his intention, if you read the item descriptions, it said "gael knew that the dark soul would ruin him, that there was little hope for safe jourey home" and the fact that he helps you with phantoms and in the dreg heap, i think he was leading us to him so we could slay him, so that the blood of dark soul was retrieved from him, and the key to it all was you, you are unkindled ash but a champion nonetheless, one that could safely bring the dark soul pigment back to the painter.
@@casmsfrought9956 he believed we are strong enough to kill him even tho he had the power of all the dark souls …gael is goated

Jesus Christ! I am more amazed at your editing skills than this boss fight right now.
So fluid and smooth, does not hinder the exciting momentum at all.
This was the only boss where I genuinely never got mad after getting killed by him. The fight was so epic for me that I just enjoyed the challenge of fighting him. It being an endurance fight as well just made it even better. By far my favorite boss in the souls games
Gael is one of those bosses where, no matter what they throw at you, it doesn't feel like bullshit, it feels doable no matter how nuts the attacks are.
Kinda wish Friede was like that,
@@e1357 Friede was like that for me. That was probably the boss I've died the most to in the entire series but every single time, I just kinda marvelled at how badass she is. I also found that she isn't that hard to dodge as long as you time it well and don't panic-roll.
The only fights that make me mad are gimmicky environmental BS like Bed of Chaos or the tight arena in Capra Demon. Nothing from Dark Souls 3 ever goes to that level. DS2 had the Old Iron King with the lava, though.
@@e1357 Friede is actually pretty fair if you think about it. It's just really tough to figure out some of her attacks, and the rapid speed doesn't make things easier. If anything that made it more frustrating to me. I couldn't even blame the boss for my deaths and whenever I did, the voice of reason always told me, "Yeah but you could have just done so and so to avoid it". Friede was probably the only super tough boss in this game I TRIED to blame. All the other ones I struggled with(Twin Princes, Soul of Cinder, and the Nameless King), I blamed nobody but myself. Didn't even try because I knew that I was 100% responsible half the time. Said mindset is also pretty applicable to the Ringed City so far. It's really hard, but it feels pretty fair, which makes all the Ringed Knight encounters, that much more enjoyable.
@@thesnatcher3616 Third phase friede is everything but fair

Some people seem to having issues with the fight so I'm going to leave some tips below that I hope will help:
1. Poison/Toxic absolutely deletes his health. Get a +9 or +10 Rotten Ghru Dagger and infuse with poison (or use poison resin). The toxic pyromancy is a tad slow and he doesn't stay in the cloud very long, so the dagger may be the easiest route.
2. He is weak to bleed and frost. So if your carry weight will allow it, the Irythill weapons and near infinite bleed weapons could help out. Note that for each proc, you need to let a cooldown happen that takes around 10 seconds.
3. If your stats support it, the Hollowslayer Greatsword would be a great way to hurt him. As Geal is tagged as a hollow, and in phase 2 is considered a Corruption of the Abyss. Meaning phase 2, the Farron/Abyss watcher equipment starts hurting him more too.
4. A shield is generally recommended. High stability should be your first priority, as he eats your stamina while your blocking. I like the Black Knight Shield personally, as its greatshield level protection at a far lower carry weight and strength requirement.
5. The most important thing, above everything above even, is to not act on impulse. A lot of his attacks/combos leave openings. Don't be greedy and try to get in extra hits, as that is pretty much how he gets you a lot of the time. Patience is the name of the game. He is your final opponent, so there is no reason to rush the fight.
I hope these little tips help someone who needs it!
Hey man, thanks a lot, I just got to him for the first time, and these are really useful tips 😂
@@KicsiSzabi222 Its no problem, I just like helping people in the souls community. Primarily with the more punishing sections of the games, or helping beginners not get farmed by twinking or far more experienced players.
you forgot one, getting good
@@nyngaming5744 That is basically tip #5, except I explained how to "git gud". Don't be greedy, and learn the attacks and openings of the opponent, as it helps you far better than the other tips.
Personally I learned to stop phrasing it like that long ago as the meme does give me a little chuckle. But it really doesn't help anyone if you don't explain what you mean or what entails "getting good". And that is the purpose of this message, to help people who love the series or want to love it but are stuck and frustrated.
@@Fibonacci11235 I just stuck with the dagger as you can spam it really quickly, rather than wait for a fog cloud to finish. As Geal never really sits there and waits to be poisoned. But that's not saying I doubt you at all, I just find the dagger to be a lot safer option. Especially at NG+8 where he 2 shots you with most attacks. I definitely don't want to stand there and take anything the old man dishes out.
But if you can find the opportunities, it is technically the better option I do agree.
12:48 “Nothin’ personal, Kid.”- Slave Knight Gael - 10,000
Boss: *does anything*
Streamers: "WaS thAt an ArtoRiaS REfeRenCe?!"
Indeed, despite Artorias ripping off my main man Penetrator
Dudes got wolves on his armour, gets up just like the abyss watchers (I know theres debate on it but IMO abyss watchers draw from the power of sifs soul in the form of his wolf offsprings' blood, and not from artorias at all, despite the similarities, leaving his soul unaccounted for.) Both get consumed by the abyss and gael starts the boss fight the exact same way as artorias with some similar attacks if I remember correct for what its worth. There is a great wolf in the first dlc he sends you, with a grave tender but not a champion (I know artorias bones are there but his soul isnt) so again I was wondering where good Arty might have gone. I also think the wolf of farron is related to the wolves in the painted world but tbh i wouldnt know specifically how so thats a hole, but also the "Followers" in the painted world are followers of the abyss watchers. Point is, reincarnation themes are huge in this game, and reincarnations often share the same fate as the original.
Let's not forget Artorias is probably THE fan favourite and this game was made for the fans. At first release without dlc they tease that he might be the abyss watchers to get you thinking, after all, wolf's blood and succumbing to the abyss are pretty big red flags, then first dlc comes out and you realize there might be more to his soul's story than that, then they hit you with a subtle twist at the end of it all. When gael gets up like the abyss watchers second phase and I finally noticed the wolf armour. I knew it had to be the man.
I reiterate... THERE* ARE* WOLVES* ON* HIS* ARMOUR*
Idk idc but that man is artorias.

DatsRandom gael went definitely bollocks artorias style turned into a half beast. We finished the duty collecting the blood of the dark soul in his stead and made his sacrifice meaningful. Gael and artorias were most probably corrupted by the same thing hence their stances and beast like attacks
Sadettin ARSLAN I believe the red aura we see is the dark soul itself corrupting him. Remember Gael is a REGULAR undead he made it to the end of time without bonfires
My favorite fight of the whole Soulsborne series. The introduction, the setting, the music, it's all just perfection. Beautiful and haunting, epic and challenging. Gaming doesn't get much better than this.
Ludwig the Holy Blade is a bit better
Сергей Новиков I would still says gaels... ludwigs setting is just to meh for me but his music is strong... as for gael everything changes... setting, music, and gael becomes more intense. But it is your opinion.
PalmDesertRock personally, the first time I fought Gwynn in the first dark souls was probably my favorite fight of all time, Gael is incredible though.
Gael is probably my favorite character in the entire souls series. His story is a dark and sad one. He went to the end of the world, killing everything in his path, just to satisfy his lady. And in the end, he knew he wouldn't make it back, luring you to kill him. We could all learn a lot from his particular tale. I honestly look at him as one of the only true heroes in Dark Souls. No funny buisness or other motives, just pure devotion. That was his happiness.
Some argue that Friede or Midir where harder fights, but everyone agrees on one thing, this was the most epic and best boss fight of all the dark souls series.
Friede annoyed and frustrated me, Midir plain crushed my will, but Gael no matter how many times I lost it just made me want to keep fighting him, his moveset is so well thought out that you just want to keep dancing with him.
I think everyone, including me, regard him as the best because so many of the aspects of the fight are masterfully done.
His attacks and phases are so awesome and visually striking to the point where the simple act of doging him feels epic, paired with how his fighting style changes from rabid and almost insane, to a more honourable duelist, to then more desperate and chaotic. Mechanically, I also feel he's designed in a way where his barrage of back flip sword swings and launching strikes from the air is meant to consume tons of stamina forcing the player to be more wise with stamina management otherwise they have barely any stamina to attack back.
His song sounds so climactic and monumental befitting the end to the series.
The arena is so cool, it literally taking place at the end of the world and now being a barren and desolate wasteland where only dust and ash remain. It despite being so massive is used to its fullest extent as well since Gael will constantly be dashing around using more charging attacks to skewer you or knock you back.
His, character is a reference to both Artorias and Guts from Berserk.
And, finally having him as the final boss is such a thematically appropriate and astonishing end to the series since he parallels the player's characters throughout the series. Some have complained that he wasn't a character who was hyped up at any point in the series but he works so well because of this. Both the Unkindled and Gael being two nobodies who were both once of no worth and now the last two left standing, outliving all the gods and nobles and the two likely now being the most powerful beings in existence, now fighting over ownership of the Dark Soul as the world nears its end. The unkindled a resurrected corpse of a person who had failed to link the fire once and now a last resort to link the fire as the Lords of Cinder refuse to to do so again, and Gael a slave knight used as cannon fodder in the war against the dragons with no thought spared on their survival enduring through all the ages and finding purpose in giving humanity a second chance through having a new world painted. One with the power of the Dark Soul and the other with the power of the Lords of Cinder, both gaining power through the consumption of others Gael through consumption of the Pygmy Lords and the Unkindled through consumption of all their fallen foes' souls, and both to be forgotten as no-one but you will know of Gael's struggle to help humanity, and you to be forgotten to time much like the characters beforehand. I couldn't think of a better ending for such an amazing series of games.
All phases of Friede individually are great, imo. However, when you have to redo the first two ones every time you die to the third phase it gets annoying. The first two phases become a chore, pretty much, and that's why I wouldn't rank her so high. Midir and Gael, however, are both fantastic. Midir is probably the only dragon boss in the series that I would call completely fair. All of his attacks are well telegraphed and, after fighting him enough times, you can even predict which attacks will come next. Gael is not only super fun, but also very well designed and has a complex move set. Just like the dancer, I was feeling like I was dancing with him the entire time. Combine these two with the soul of cinder and you got the perfect ending to a fantastic trilogy
Friede definitely was not harder. She took like an hour to beat. Gael took 4
@@MrcreeperDXD777 gael took me like 20mims while friede 2hr in couldn't hit once in the 3rd phase, I said fuck it and used a summon for the 1st time, same for midir I was just getting sick of the chaotic endurance fight

Crazy Wolf Gaming How about not bringing people? She's harder solo than any other boss in this game (in my experience of course, different people find different bosses tougher).
Mitch Fletcher Solo for sure, with summons hell no. The fact she staggers easily makes her easy to stun lock with more than one person. Gael is pretty easy solo but with summons for some reason he's way harder.

As a newbie to the series, coming to this boss felt like a sin honestly. I felt like I came across something that wasn't meant for me, like I desecrated a grave and somehow managed to kill what was sent to punish me for doing so. But it also felt like I was fighting somone on a similar journey as I, a lost and dark soul, looking for something and achieving it with violence that saw no prejudice.
This fight was one of my favorites, simply wonderful, the music, his moves, his story (from what I could understand), the arena, everything. It felt like I was at the end of my journey, the end of everything. And all that was left for me was a fellow champion who was consumed by his own goals. The cherry on top is his weapon was my signature one for most runs afterwards.
hot shit my man, this is some damn good editing, the cuts between streamers are near flawless especially during the actual fight itself when its not even at the same camera angle, good work dude
Some people are disappointed, lore-wise, that Gael is the final boss. But then again, he kind is the perfect fit. Who else would you rather have wanted ?
goku
Bosses like Gwyn are actually understandable as final bosses. They are set up throughout the entire game as gods and when you find them they either are gods or have fallen to be husks. A boss that actually makes you feel something. Not this shit
+Strip Dancer of the Frigid Valley
The only difference between Gwyn and Gael is the Lord Soul they possess and some history. In the first game, you killed Gwyn, Nito, and the Bed of Chaos, but you never had to find the Dark Soul. Gael possesses the real Dark Soul, for it is in his blood, and with his death all the Lord Souls are lost forever. Gael should make you feel something more than Gwyn, because we never met the latter and he never helped us out. Gwyn burnt to a Lord of Cinder out of desperation and jealousy, whereas Gael lost himself in who-knows-how-long he was out in the desert of ashes only because he wanted to present such a precious gift to his niece in Ariandel. It's more than that, for Gael's death providing the pigment means the dawn of a new age for men - one free of the cycle of flame for eternity. One they all deserved.
Maybe just pay more attention to the story? Not the games problem if you're just too dumb.
time for amazing chest Ok you have swayed me a bit more to like Gael as a final boss but not as a series finale boss. I still think Gwyn is a hell of a lot more emotional though
