Correctional Exercise to Restore Normal Curve in Neck from Forward Head Posture / Dr Mandell

  • Working long hours looking down and forward causes forward head carriage that will lead to neck pain, pinched nerves, headaches, TMJ, arthritis, and disc problems. Stretching the proprioception organelles in the ligaments with this technique will help correct forward head posture as communication to the brain is achieved through proprioception.

    I am 71 y.o. I have a pretty severe case of forward-head-posture. I thought it would be prohibitively painful for me to do this exercise. But, to my surprise, I was able to achieve the full extension by progressing with about 10 baby steps and resting a few seconds after each step by manually lifting my head. I plan to do this every day. Thank you Dr. Mandell.

    I hung my head over the bed before getting out of bed this morning for about 15 mins. Felt amazing! Kept my head up and back during the morning. Definitely felt a difference. You are my posture guru. Thank you!

      I’m curious if this is recommending on beds, as they can have enough give to encourage the shoulders being in a probated position instead of being back and open.
      Does that make a difference in the necks ability to stretch correctly if you already have forward head posture? I would imagine so. Perhaps a bench or stiff bed, or even a pillow below your back to give you extra elevation?

    Hi Dr. Mandell, With the help of God and you, my hump below the back of my neck has improved so much. I was trying on clothes in a store and the mirror showed the back as I was changing and I noticed that my back looked flat. I couldn't even see my shoulder blades or that little valley in my back. I did the exercise above for about 10 min. twice a day and also the exercises for Atlas, Traps and Romboids, double chin and neck elongation and I found a site that featured a nice sitting rowing exercise. It has only been about maybe going on 3 weeks; and I am seeing the valley in the middle of my spine, and my shoulders blades are beginning to peak thru. I did a lot of your exercises because I figure if your upper back is flat; as far as probs.go, that I pretty much had it all. I ordered some posture correctional bras that I pretty much wear unless I am sleeping or in the shower. I thought my hump was only cosmetic but now I realize, I feel better in sooo many ways. Thank you so much, God bless you Barb.

    I lie on the floor with a thick book under my shoulder blades with head resting back but still supported on the floor. Then I take a nap or watch TV for 30 minutes. Usually just breathing pops vertebra back in place. To loosen shoulders I use a softball, keeping it in place until the pain subsides and then move it someplace else that's sore. Really clears the head and lowers the shoulders.

    • @dandeleona4760
      @dandeleona4760 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If turning your head to one side to watch TV is difficult, maybe you shouldn't do this kind of thing at all. Be kind to your spine. But I watch TV fine on my back. It passes the time until the vertebra pop back into place ... which usually happens within a couple minutes, so TV after that is optional :D

    • @dandeleona4760
      @dandeleona4760 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Think about the muscle groups you want to target so you don't over extend your neck and still not get the benefit you're looking for. Muscles that pull your chin jaw and ears forward attach to your collar bone in front. They get short from things we do daily like reading, looking down or lifting to level with our chest and neck. Lay with the books under your shoulders, with head resting comfo
      rtably on the floor. Tuck your chin down just a little and raise your head about a 1/2-1 inch off the floor. In just a few seconds you'll feel the muscles running from your ears and voice box to your collar bone are in tension. Stay there to gently stretch your front neck. When you no longer feel the muscles on your collar bone, stay there and slowly turn your head a few inches to right or left with the same mild chin tuck. That will stretch the muscles you didn't get with a central pull, and most of them are deep inside your neck around your throat. I got rid of my double chin that way, and put my head back over my spine where it belonged when I stand up.
      It doesn't happen like that just once, but since there are straps of criss crossing muscles in the front neck, you have to gradually pull all them out so you can actually stand up straight from the base of the neck.

  • @matchpoint14
    @matchpoint14 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I do it for 10 minutes. The very first time I could not believe at how it cleared my mind and perked my mood up. All the nutrient rich blood goes directly to your brain with this stretch. I doubt it is good for your neck but if you could do this 10 times a day for 10 minutes per session I bet it would be great therapy for depression and other mental disorders because your brain would be getting all that extra oxygen and nutrients from the blood.

    • @neinbruderja7519
      @neinbruderja7519 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not sure about the blood to the brain explanation, but it surely improves your airflow. The head position is basically the head tilt, chin lift from CPR. Expands upper airways and allows extra respiratiory muscles to relax for a minute, which are hyperactive in stress situations.

    You're honest and want to help people so much with sound advice. I'm gonna try this exercise - everyone can spare a minute or two each day doing it. I wish someone had an idea to get rid of a pinched nerve in my hip which apparently causes tension in my toes - I do nerve flossing with my feet and forward bends with sitting or standing, but I'd like to heal this problem permanently. I've had it for nearly two years and it has gotten 75% better but never goes away completly.

    Seven years ago I began to have severe shoulder and neck pain. I even had to leave the Marine Corps after only 4 years in serve because they simply couldn't help me. On top off the iceberg I also got a hernia around that time. After a few years the pain was more less and I went to school again. Now two years ago I suddenly got heavy pain in my neck/face and it got swollen within a few hours. I went to docters, chiropracters, having about 10 nerve blocks, mri's ect and a lot of medication until two weeks ago when I began to do this excercise and other ones according your channel. I immiately felt a change. Every time I do these excercises I feel like the room between the vertebrae is opening en the nerves can 'breath' again. I belevieve that the militairy neck was always the problem. Sorry for the long storry but I had some terrible years in the back and I can not express how much I appreciate your video. Hopefully my recovery will have an end soon. Thank you, much love from Holland

      Sleeping on a firm surface such as the floor(Depending on what type of floor it is) as well as barefoot walking/running would be ideal in a perfect world where our bodies are stronger and more used to doing such things. However, often times when someone(especially someone with injuries or pre-existing bio mechanical issues) tries to do these things, it can make matters worse. I speak from first hand experience where sleeping on the floor caused me a longer journey to recovery. I would say the smarter route is to gradually phase in firmer materials in the way of what you're sleeping on before trying out sleeping on a a floor or mat as some of the Japanese do.
      Regards.

That makes a HUGE difference, and from now on I will be doing this on a regular basis. I will also be doing your neck video for strengthening the back of the neck to hold the head in place so it doesn't constantly fall forward. Mine falls forward when I sleep and constricts my airflow because they are so weak from years of abuse. I'm so happy to find your utube channel. Have a great day! :)

    Ya, it's not fun listening to natural healers at the same time listening to doctors. I got myself a SSA case before trying to find treatment and diagnose of my bugle disc and lower back disc out. Now I have Fibromyalgia. Nine years of trying to get the right treatments and diagnose. I am trying to heal myself with help of living with others after losing my home and job , because of my health. If the F doctors would have done tests, I would have to apply for benefits. I hope with self help videos , diet , and time I will heal.

      kiraraandfamily I hope you get back on track. Fibro in my opinion along with just about all illness, is due to stress and anxiety. It's easy and hard to overcome stress and anxiety. What I mean by this is, thinking negative thoughts for you anxious and stressed, so how do you overcome that? By doing the same thing that got you their to begin with! It's that easy, you replace your thoughts with positive ones. For example, when a situation arises, look at the possible positive outcomes instead of the negative ones. Because at the end of the day no one knows if our decisions will be a negative or a positive outcome. So just think to yourself the positives, and just talk to yourself saying things like this :I AM happy, I AM healthy, I AM fearless, I AM loving. Replace all negative thought with this positive reinforcement, and I promise you will feel much better, but a good diet is important as well. You may also want to go see a chiropractor if you haven't already. Watch Dr john Bergman on here, he has a wealth of knowledge. I hope you get better. I'm healing myself, stress and anxiety caused me to get IBS and tingling in my forehead, but with this model of thinking, things have greatly improved.

    Please note that this table is, most likely very firm and covered in high density foam. It has a bull- nose sort of edge -- all ideal for this maneuver. Most of us do not have this at home.
    Also: How you schooch up is important.Have your feet flat on surface as shown. Lift your rear by pressing your feet and use your elbows as well for this.If your neck then feels too crimped, gently tilt your head forward with fingertips behind ears or by clasping the hair on tio of head. MAKE SURE that your moves are made in VERY SMALL INCREMENTS. Frankly I find this exercise more than a little daunting for the the newbie at home. Something like a high-quality massage table would be ideal, and I'm not sure about doing it with no one around the first couple of times.

    Hi Doc. I am 20 and have been a patient of vertebral wedging D12 and lumber lordosis since 6 years. I have always had backaches. But when the pain got unbearable I went on and done MRI, Xray, and blood test. In MRI i was diagnosed with Vertebral wedging D12 and Loss of lumber curvature in the Xray. I was also diagnosed with deficiency of vitamin D. My orthopaedic suggested me to take 3 supplements for a lifetime if not then at least for 7 to 8 months. He also suggested me to take sun exposure on the back. Its been 3 months i am taking the supplements. I feel a little change in my lower back. But I still have pain in my back.My shoulders started aching just after i started supplements ( I feel my lordosis is getting better but my upper back is still the same). I sleep on a very thin pillow because since i started my medication, my shoulders and neck couldn't bear a thick pillow. My back still hurts without any support on my back. When I do any work or i stand for instance in a kitchen for about 10 minutes my back starts aching. I am afraid I heard pregnancy gets very complicated once the back got worsened, My doc also suggested me do Physiotherapy but i am afraid because I have both D12 fracture and Lumber lordosis. Could you please help me out. I have asked so many specialists on youtube but none replied 😢

      @@wajeehakhan4170 late reply but hey! First off my background is physio therapy. Not to trivialize your pain or condition, but I have seen people in worse condition than you go from being in bed 24 hours a day for years, to climbing mountains. People who had to take out entire disks in their spine. Never ever give up. No matter what injury you have in the back or otherwise, never give up on trying to move your body. Don't let doctors or surgeons tell you what to do, they don't always know whats best for you. The only thing that remains 100% certain, is that doing nothing, or only resting and taking pills, will make you worse. Especially your back and joints, they will have a harder time when your muscles atrophy from not moving, and muscle pain will spread to different areas. Strong muscles surrounding your joints help support the joint and reduces pain very effectively because there is less stress on the joint when it is properly supported. Joints are meant to move, and without movement, it deteriorates over time. For any joint or area of damage in your body to heal properly, full range of motion in the joint, proper nerve supply and blood supply is required. The best way to promote this, is general exercise. I wouldn't reccomend doing lifts until you are stronger, but gentle exercises, stretches, or walking will help relieve pain over time, and retrain your body to support your spine better so you don't fatigue so easily doing everyday things. Don't be afraid to try working with a physio therapist so you can find gentle ways to start exercising, but choose one who has some experience working with people with back conditions like your own. No matter how hopeless you feel, have faith in mother nature and the fact that once we give the body the help and movement it needs, miracles happen. 1 baby step at a time :)

      My MRI's showed improvement. I had not only lost the curve in my neck but it was actually inverted in the opposite direction. It caused me to become permanently disabled and on narcotic pain killers, muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatory meds 24/7. I used an inversion machine at first then a full body traction mat that pushed the neck (and entire spine) into the correct anatomical position. It was accomplishing the same thing as demonstrated in the video. When my neck straightens and I begin to have migraines and other issues from a straight neck, I will sometimes grab a scarf and a family member and have them hold the scarf while cradling my neck. If they pull straight up and then in towards their body...my neck will crack. Similar to using a Y-strap but not nearly as violent. This puts the neck back into the correct position thus bringing great relief and again, it is measurable on an MRI but eventually will need to be done again. The same effect could be achieved by using a neck roll or rolled hand towel and placed in the curve of your neck while laying flat not the ground.

      Eat natto, it’s really high in K2 and will help you build your bone matrix. Also avoid calcium enriched foods like diary. They actually don’t go to your bone matrix, but build up else where and leave us deficient in calcium. Get calcium from vegetables, not supplements.
