Hi Doctor and what exercises for Forestier disease . Problems neck all c niveaus also in my upper and under back facetartrose everywhere. Its very hard to live with
i have no words to describe how happy i am , haha. i was struggling for weeks, never mind few months if i recall and man it was such a pain in the ass, i couldn't sit on chair for few minutes, i couldn't tilt my head down, i couldn't look left nor right, and yesterday, i tried the sleeping method, it did feel uncomfortable, and little pain? while i was laying down, but i slept like a baby, when i woke up, the pain was drastically reduced. my sincere thankyou , i feel at peace.
I had a bad experience with this orthopedic pillow. The problem was that you need to sleep on the thin side during sleep on the back and for sleeping on the side you need the thick side of pillow. And I sleep in different position during the night. When I was using this pillow for a years, instead fof feel refreshed I woke up with neck pain very often. And didn't understand why because all chiropractors recommends it for good health as you. When I tried to common thin pillow its feels so much better for spine and neck. I don't have so much headache anymore neither neck pain. So I think this pillow is too high for normal position and oposite put your head up as well like a thick pillow. Roll pillow seems better.
Hi Jon, sleeping on my back with no pillow just a thin towel roll under my neck has been a great help for relief from the bone spurs in my neck, also a fairly flat pillow under the towel roll. I had two cushions under my knees and pillows at each side for my arms. I’ve had four night in a row now without the nerve pain going down my arms. Thank you, you are doing great work with these videos and they are very appreciated!😊
Looking forward to trying both traction stretches, I'm dealing with a pinched nerve that happened... while sleeping. Thank you for your helpful videos and hopefully I feel better soon!
Its great to see you replying to every comment. I am suffering from mild diffuse disc bulge at C4-C5 and C5-C6 levels causing tingling/mild numbness on my left hand and last 2 fingers. Will try changing my sleeping position and come back with outcome in 2 weeks (FYI - Already doing neck exercises for the last 3 days). Thanks a lot!
Ive had pain for a month now. At first it was a stiff neck that resembled a strained muscle. Most stiffness is gone but now i have sharp and achy pain in back of neck into top shoulder into shoulder in area of shoulder and arm. My chiropractor just pushes out my neck and tells me just to ice and thats it. My neck curve does go opposite of natural way. I have scoliosis at the lower spine. I will try this advice. Thank you!
i resigned from my job because of this nerve pain to my arm and numbness. and even now its still in pain. yet to try these stretches and way of sleeping.
Thank you , thank you, thank you! You have helped me so much. That cervical pillow, and the way to use it. I will be forever grateful to you Dear Doctor Saunders.! Regards Jana

It's on my left shoulder. It's giving me a pulsating headache at the left side back of my head. It radiates through the left arm at times. The left side of my face has a weird sensation like numbess. I have an appointment with a doctor soon. I've been doing some of your exercises you've provided, so thank you.

Thank you for this video. I have this problem and in addition I have a previous injury to my rotator cuff on the same side. So no side sleep at all because the lying on the unaffected side immediately makes the right side go numb, dead asleep. Lying on my back very long and the left side of my neck causes numbness in my ear, top of head, and face. My bed is very cushiony so most times I don't use a pillow at all. I have been doing heavy lifting and labor jobs for 25 years so I think it's all catching up with me.
Just watched your video, thank you, will try, if it makes a difference on painful neck and spine herniated disk, (MVA) Motor Vehicle Accident, sometimes I crawl on the floor.
I have neck arthritis, I have a pinched nerve for the last two years somewhere in my neck. I had a x-ray done two years ago, and it said I had bone spurs, I had something with the facet joints, and narrowing of the disc space and mild degenerative disease. I’ve been dealing with this for that long. I’m wondering if having issues like this can cause these few things? Sharp head pains in one spot that come and go almost on a daily basis just above my right temple in my scalp. A weird tingling type numbness sensation on the right side of my face near my mouth, which makes my beard hair feel prickly, that comes and goes as well on a near deli basisand lightheadedness? Afraid to go to a doctor because I’m afraid that they’re going to find something seriously wrong. It’s gotten to the point where I need to see a neck specialist, or a spine specialist and I will be doing that in a month. Thank you for any input.
That is a tough question and is dependent on your size, preferences, goals, etc...please watch all my videos on pillows and sleep positions. Best wishes.
Great info! Question? How should I sleep on adjustable bed with head adjusted up for acid reflux? I have shoulder and neck pain and don’t know what I am doing wrong??? Maybe no pillow?
Thanks so much for this! Ive recently pulled or pinched nmmy nerves on my right hand casuung numbness and tingling for 1.5 weeks which led to neck pain. Per mri, i have a trace bulge at c4-c5. However the numbness has my back pain along with shoulder. I have had numbnes in my right side of face that would last the whole day unless i take meds. Or rest on my cervical pillow which helps to release that numbness. Thanks so much for this!
0:06 Thanks for posting these videos…have you got any advice on how to stop my arms going numb in the night? I tend to sleep with my arms above my head. It’s 3wks of constant pain from a trapped nerve and every time I sleep it gets worse…any suggestions would be greatly appreciated Thank you
Sir your video not showing properly because written word's which running in below are disturbing us for comes to you... Please make change in this. Your videos is really helpful to us_ sujit from india...
I have had to sleep sitting up due to vertigo ( virus?)😵💫which has put strain on my neck instigating prior cervicogenic dizziness. Sleeping is foundational to heal.
If you haven't already, check to make sure your vertigo isn't BPPV. If it is it has an easy cure that you can even do at home. My grandmother had it and it does work if this is what you have. canalith repositioning procedure and the Lempert roll are the correction procedures for BPPV.
You also might need to address cervical hypermobility which causes Instability. So many many physicians know little to nothing about this. I was diagnosed by my Orthopedic doctor. In this case sleeping well, even though beyond wonderful, most likely wont allow this to heal. This is from my experience and 5 years of research.
@@drjonsaunders thanks for citing your older video. It's best, in my view, to bring up Cervical Instability for every video like the one in 'How to Sleep.' It's been an absolute nightmare in me getting from a pain scale of 9 out of 10 to a 2-5 out of Ten, daily. I had to resort to Reddit forums to lead me to any real qualitative help. Cervical problems that cause pinch nerves and/or arteries is what I was and still am experiencing. Reddit lead me Cymbalta and Dry Needling which got this pain down to the lower levels. Nothing and I mean nothing else has helped. Chiropractic Biophysics folk have helped a little bit but no other Chiropractic Methodology has worked at all. I mean Zero and I've been to a ton of chiropractors including the chiropractor orthogonal! You mentioned prolotherapy. I've had, in the last three weeks, Prolotherapy with PRP in my Cervical Facets in an attempt to strengthen the joints to reduce the excessive motion. Evidently it can be 6 months to a year for resolution if at all. Also may need a second round which I may get which is very expensive. Only reason why I am posting is just for public awareness and health of others.
I sometimes sleep with one of those travel neck pillows, it snaps in the front So as I transition between my sides and my back, my neck is always supported.
I feel relief in my neck, if I lay down on the side and the affected side of my neck (left) is up. However, I cannot find position for my left arm, in which it would not hurt. The pain in the arm eventually becomes so bad, I have to give up and lay on my back again. But I can´t fall asleep laying on my back, so I have been sleeping really badly lately.
Thanks for this information. I'm currently dealing with a bad pinch nerve that makes both of my arms and fingers very numb. I found one of your videos on 5 exercises to do when dealing with this type of condition. I also have a chiropractor. My only question on these is the last one stretch. I have a straight neck will that type of exercise will benefit me? Thank You.
Great video! Do you have any recommendations for specific pillow brands? I've tried a towel under my neck, and I've tried a pillow under my knees, but gave up on both because the neck towel caused the blood to rush to my head, and after about 30 mins, my legs would go numb from the knee pillow. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, but knowing what kind of pillows I should get might help. Thanks so much!
Number one, i cant sleep with pillow between my legs. Number 2, i have a reflux problem, so have to sleep with my head up a bit high. Ive tried the rounded pillow, even though i tend to sleep on my stomach, (habit i picked up 50 years ago after having babies.) i start in right position, but end up on my stomach, and dont ask me where my head ends up😂 will try your method, but heres hoping.....
I have both problems. I also had a knee replacement. I have a small but firm cushion that I put between my knees. The relief on my back is immediate. When I lie on my back and partially on the side, I put that same cushion in the small of my back.
I've been facing a sharp pain on my mid thumb area and the radial scapular area. Both are annoying in their own way, while the thumb pain restricts me from my day to day tasks such as pinching my toothpaste or opening a ziplock the back pain makes is hard to sit or sleep, making me want to cry. Now the thumb pain has proceeded to the index finger too. I will try these techniques and I really hope they work. Do let me know if I should also go for some release therapy to my physiotherapist (radiation, ultrasound etc.) Thanks!
I can only sleep on my side, as I have had severe spinal stenosis in the lower spine (L2 tp S1) since 2010, and decompression surgery L4-L5 in 2012, not entirely successfu. Spine hasdegenerated since. Neck and shoulder trapped nerve, I think, only in last 5 months. Advice please.
I bought one of those pillows about a year ago and it caused shooting pain down both my arms. I can’t have anything touching the area between the base of my head and my neck or it exacerbates the pain so when I see this trying to put the pillow on my neck, I don’t understand because I can’t do that. Desperate for some relief on steroids getting a second MRI is now I think the disk is definitely herniated bulging. The nerve pain is everywhere it’s debilitating.
Can you make a video on how to study properly? I sit at my desk for long hours and I cannot lift my iPad or book up because it causes shoulder pain due to its weight. When I lower my head to write or read, I suffer from terrible neck pain, even though I am only twenty years old. I have a problem, which is that I cannot write properly unless I tilt the book to the side or tilt my neck to the side. I do not know the reason for this, and I have consulted many doctors who told me that they did not know the reason.
Hi Dr. Saunders,I went to the Orthopedic and i have Cervical spine osteoarthritis from C4-C7. He subscribed Muscle relaxation pills Norgesic and Algofren anti inflammatory pills for 10 days+ wearing 2-3 hours per day a colar of 9cm in height +Psysio therapy sessions. My question : After doing this therapy, is there a more natural and up keep solution for pain free in the future? Can you please give me some advice on my disc stenosis? I appreciate your videos and I have subscribed! Thank you for your feedback.😊
I have tons of structural problems, but I see when you are laying on your side, you are compressing your shoulder. You may not notice it, but I do, every night. What can I do about this? I sleep on my side, my back, my stomach, and all sorts of ways, because I cannot stay in one position from being sore. Is there any way of keeping the neck and head straight with the rest of the body, but not compress the bottom shoulder so much? It causes irritation between my shoulder blade and spine. Also, my spine.
@drjonsaunders please do a cervical spondylosis video for sleep and treatment. I have cut all sugar and stopped smoking and started Acupuncture. I have had enough of pain killers and injections. Regards from Japan.
Hi Dr Jon, I recently diagnosed with C6 and C7 Cervical Radiculopathy and I am struggling what are the best therapy I can do to revert my condition apart from having the surgery. When I follow your stretch/traction exercise I feel pain on my shoulder blade and the numbness feeling on my left arm still exists. Should I continue? Will the pain and numbness feeling gone one day? Thanks.
I’ve been sleeping with a pillow under my arm for support after shoulder surgery for years. I just can’t find a comfortable position though with my median nerve issue from my neck.
I sleep on my couch which is fairly new but very squishy. It’s not ideal and I dislike the squish. I prefer a firm mattress or the floor. Would you recommend the floor over this couch? I currently have a pinched nerve in my neck and have tried many of these suggestions on my own just trying to find relief! All of my pillows are flat so I am going to try a rolled up thicker towel. Thank you for your video!
So I'm a bit confused. I have 3-4 herniations from my C2-C7, and I work at the computer a lot so I have a bit of a forward head posture (upper-cross syndrome? heard this might be a myth). To combat this I've been doing chin tucks and a whole range of other neck movements. But I feel like I have a pinched nerve since my upper trap has a lot of pain/soreness. When I tried these two stretches, the variation where I'm pronated on the bed with my head tracking forward is providing a ton of relief. But isn't this contributing more to my forward head posture? I am conflicted as the movements/exercises that are supposed to improve my forward head posture are seemingly making my pinched nerve worse. Unsure of the reasoning for these contradictory symptoms.
Question! 😊 I’m seeing my chiropractor for a pinched nerve in the brachial plexus. However, it is definitely coming from a massive knot at the top of my right shoulder, which has been there for a very long time, and progressively got worse, into this. It feels like concrete when trying to release it. Will a massage therapist be able to get the job done? Thank you! 😊
A massage in addition to your chiropractic would be your best bet, as the muscle is likely tight due to the nerve irritation. I hope you feel better soon!
I also do the supine neck stretch off the end of the bed with a thick foam roller under my neck. I also found that hanging both my arms behind me off the end of the bed adds to the traction effect, and that seems to help. What is your opinion on this?
@@drjonsaunders I have a longstanding problem with my dorsal scapular nerve, as revealed in your informative video. Why do you have the comments turned off on that video?
I am experiencing a pinched nerve in neck with pain in shoulder and down arm. Are there any types of exercise you should not do? Is it ok to run? Or to lift weights? Or what sort of exercise should be avoided? I have tried to run a couple times and it doesn’t seem to aggravate my symptoms and more than they already are.

Hey doc, I've been sleeping without a pillow to fix my hunch back and neck pain. But my abdomen is lifting upwards and causing lower back pain. How do i fix it?
Hi I do have neck stiffness and shoulder pain too it feels like muscle tension when I rotate my head left or right / stretching, is it related to nerve pinch or muscle soreness? I do feel a bit pain when I press abit near C6/ C7.. Also, can post throat sore or tonsils can cause this too?
I have pain on both arms triceps fingers wrists elbow what do I have do to relief or recover from it . I get this pain after workouts while in middle of a sleep and morning can’t sleep

I found one of your videos on 5 exercises to do when dealing with this type of condition. I also have a chiropractor. My only question on these is the last one stretch. I have a straight neck will that type of exercise will benefit me? Thank You.
Yes, they should all help, best wishes.

Thanks and welcome!
No brand recommendations, just usage recommendations. :)
Hi doc, the prone one seems to be relieving, but the opposite one Supine seems to send the pain straight down my arm into my 3 fingers
Thanks doc..the head tilt back helps & just a Q maybe left field.. you think hot drinks help? Seems to for me, maybe it's a tension release thing?
It's hard to say, yes it may just because you find them relaxing.
You got this! :)
Reflux - change your diet.
I have both problems. I also had a knee replacement. I have a small but firm cushion that I put between my knees. The relief on my back is immediate. When I lie on my back and partially on the side, I put that same cushion in the small of my back.
Thank you
You're welcome
What is the purpose of the traction in the mornings? I felt tightness through my right deltoid from being on my back and letting my head hang.
No special time for traction...whenever convenient! Best wishes.
I hope my video helps! Always a good idea to see your health provider for an appropriate diagnosis - best wishes!
I sympathize~from annoying to tears and back. I hope you've found some relief. Did your Dr. help?
I can only sleep on my side, as I have had severe spinal stenosis in the lower spine (L2 tp S1) since 2010, and decompression surgery L4-L5 in 2012, not entirely successfu. Spine hasdegenerated since. Neck and shoulder trapped nerve, I think, only in last 5 months. Advice please.
I'm sorry to hear - please explore my channel for videos that can help - best wishes.
:( Sorry to hear.
What cervical pillow do you recommend?
That is a tough question...without seeing your posture, it is very difficult for me to say...please watch my video on pillows.
I have pain radiating down both arms sometimes it switches from one arm to another?what should I do
Follow along with your more frequent and worst side.
Good topic!
Sorry should have watched the whole video before asking my question. Thanks
No problem.:)
Yes, just follow some of my other videos on good posture and it should help you stay well. Take care!
In addition to pillows a towel can be rolled up to be a pillow, folded in lalf in long direction and then rolled should be pretty useful.
👍
This makes the pain worse
I have tons of structural problems, but I see when you are laying on your side, you are compressing your shoulder. You may not notice it, but I do, every night. What can I do about this? I sleep on my side, my back, my stomach, and all sorts of ways, because I cannot stay in one position from being sore. Is there any way of keeping the neck and head straight with the rest of the body, but not compress the bottom shoulder so much? It causes irritation between my shoulder blade and spine. Also, my spine.
I'll do a future video on it - best wishes.
@drjonsaunders I look forward to it, thank you sir
If I lie on the unaffected side then my hip hurts and I will get pain down my leg. I am a side sleeper so this wakes me up every night. Any advice.
Try a pillow between your knees?
Do you have any videos on L5 spondylosis? Thanks.
No, but will add it to my list of future videos!
@@drjonsaunders Thanks so much!!!
Thanks.
Sorry to hear, it may be best to see your local chiropractor for help with correction and or cervical decompression therapy.
I’ve been sleeping with a pillow under my arm for support after shoulder surgery for years. I just can’t find a comfortable position though with my median nerve issue from my neck.
I'm sorry to hear that - please see my other sleep position videos to see if you can find something that works for you. Best wishes.
I can’t find a pellow that will fit me because I’m a little person size if a 5 what can I do for a pellow

Is there a link for that pillow?
Check out the description for links. Best wishes.
Yes, experimenting to find a comfortable position is your best bet and some find sleeping on the floor temporarily helpful.
Can you show any help for those of us who get vertigo when our head lowers?

Can you please recommend a good neck pillow!!

@@drjonsaunders thank you!
This may help: th-cam.com/video/Bsf4nUtj49s/w-d-xo.html
Question! 😊
I’m seeing my chiropractor for a pinched nerve in the brachial plexus.
@@drjonsaunders Why thank you, sir!
You’re saying it’s tight because of the pinched nerve, not the other way around. Hmmm…
Good to know! 👍🏼😊
What if you are a side or tummy sleeper?
Watch whole video. :)
I also do the supine neck stretch off the end of the bed with a thick foam roller under my neck. I also found that hanging both my arms behind me off the end of the bed adds to the traction effect, and that seems to help. What is your opinion on this?
Yes if you can tolerate it, go to it. :)

I have pinch nerve and neck pain. It affected all my life. i haven't slept comfortably since 4 years ago. I work on computer 6 to 7 hours... what should i do for the chair? Also

what if our natural curve in the neck is backwards?
That would be a cervical kyphosis, I have a video on that coming in next few weeks.
Hey doc, I've been sleeping without a pillow to fix my hunch back and neck pain. But my abdomen is lifting upwards and causing lower back pain. How do i fix it?
Try a pillow supporting under your knees....best wishes.
@drjonsaunders thank youu 🤗
Tq doctor
My pleasure!
if the problem is on the left side should i sleep on the right side? left side is the hand that has issues from a disc issue.
Follow the advice in my video, but it may take some time trying a few positions before finding the best one for you. Take care.
What about sleeping on travel pillows? I have a small neck there are times that I wake up with a stiff neck. It’s pretty hard to find thin pillow
Yes that could work. All the best.
Fantástico 😊
Thank you!
It may be a nerve, but really to know for sure you would need to get an examination. Best wishes.
@@drjonsaunders thank you !! i do have my appointment today. Will keep updating
I have pain on both arms triceps fingers wrists elbow what do I have do to relief or recover from it . I get this pain after workouts while in middle of a sleep and morning can’t sleep
I hope my video helps...if it persists you should see your doctor for an appropriate diagnosis. Best wishes.
If you have had surgery and developed a pinched nerve on lower disc which would be best
That will take some experimenting to find which one is most comfortable. Best wishes.
I went to see a physical therapist to do my back surgery and he told me after one session how much my pain would go away. It's normal for me to do exercises at home as well.
I hope you find help and get relief soon!
Physical therapists can’t do surgery.
I have a issue with my neck when I sleep. Mine goes to my toes or one of them on each foot
:( Sorry to hear.
I have been suffering from neck and shoulder pain for 5 years CT scan says everything is normal
I'm sorry to hear that, I hope my video helps you.
