this is the very first car from long time that give me the envy to go back on rc car
nice review man
Fantastic video, Thanks for all the info and tips on what to to upgrade etc.
Good choice on the Futaba receiver and horn. Nice review!
Yep, it needed it!
awesome video rich. also will you be doing a live stream anytime soon and according to you which is better the yeti or the rock ray.
thanks for sharing this review
Just got this bad boy and it handles anything you put in front me and my 6 year old boy are living it
Test out the losi baja rey! The review about the rock rey ist awsome.
I had the same problem with the stering servo my one Striped it im getting it repared
REVIEW THE BAJA REY I LOVE YOUR REVIEWS tells me every thing I need to know 😜
Thanks for the review. Did you run it with any of the smaller tires? I'd love to know the differences in regard to handling, traction, and ground clearance. Keep those great videos coming.
2.2 prolines, save the driveline, Big time!
What replacement tires would u recommend
Say mostly desert running and then mostly rock driving
So, you were spot on, with needing a smaller diameter tire.
I swapped out to some proline 2.2 SCT tires, and its amazing.
Also, and more importantly..
Im not frying the front diff, anymore.
Use the Exotek front diff cup, and housing.
Also, make sure, its shimmed, correctly.
500k diff fluid in the front, open center with 250k diff fluid, and locked rear, it drives amazing!!!
Glad to help - I had some pretty good time with this buggy in its race state and quickly found all of it's flaws.
I just got into the Hobby back in August and became addicted. Now 8 Trucks later I'm looking for my next. The last I purchased was my Axial Wraith Rock Racer (2.2), and even though I have a Yeti Clone (Vrx Octane XL) I was still going to get a Yeti, until I found this video, now I'm on the fence on which would be the best for me. The Rock Rey is faster but how is the parts support with Losi vs Axial? and which would be the hardest for someone whos technically still an RC rookie to wrench on?
Could you tell me if a 42mm in diameter motor would fit in this? Thanks
I ordered that exact battery from horizon hobby it takes a month to arrive and the first battery had the first cell defective they ordered a 2d one and it was lost in transit the 3d one didn't arrive yet
hi rich is this rig better then the yeti xl ?
Awesome 💪🏼🔥
Thanks for watching!
Do you know if it's weight is scaled aswell?
I didn't really like my 1/10 yeti kit version. But i still want one if these. 😳
I'm not real familiar with the Rock Rey. I had just watched a video on the 1/6th scale Super Rock Rey and at half the price this one seems just as capable and fun to drive. Thanks for sharing this awesome buggy. 👍👍
The Rock Rey was the original......with the exception of the Baja Rey.
Love! Love! Love my rock rey!!!
It's a pretty good platform - just needs a couple of upgrades
That's a cool colour. And nice place to run it👍
Thanks 👍
I love your videos. I really need some advice. I want an 1/8 scale buggy 4wd that is big. I want power, good handling and most important durability. I need a RTR... can you tell me what would be the best one to get?
Aaron Wilds 1/8th buggies are all the same size. What's tough are RTR's - the best in my opinion is the Arrma Typhon or possibly the new Losi 8ight 4.0 RTR. If you want to go for a super durable quality 1/8, the Tekno EB48.4 is my favorite, but it's a kit
Thanks, specifically I want a 1/8" sand rail or dune buggy style...any suggestions?
I love mine
Hi,
Thanks for the video, does the sand get easily inside the motor and stops it?
Thanks
Mohamad Hasan the motor is somewhat sealed. The only issue I had was sand getting into the transmission, but it is all steel inside of there.
good video.
Whats the tops speed of this? Also, is this good for bashing/big jumps? Ive been looking which rc is good for those so far my choices are traxxas tmaxx 3.3 and hpi bullet mt
You named two severely out of date RC's in the later portion of your comment....The Rock Rey is meant to be a more "scale" desert buggy....but it can go fast too, on 3s Lipo. If you really want bash-ability, check out the Arrma 6S lineup.
In your opinion which is better Losey rock ray or the new laser nut
The Lasernut is having a ton of driveshaft issues...so, probably the RR. The LN will be the better (handling) buggy though with full independent suspension.
I have the Super Rock Rey and was thinking about getting this for my brother. It's $399 now and $349 for the bind and drive. It isn't a definite yet, I've got more research to do, but this Rock Rey is pretty high on the list of choices. My brother currently has the Traxxas Stampede, but is getting tired. He can't drive it a full pack without having a problem. It's got many upgrades and it is pretty indestructible overall. He ran it yesterday but the center driveshaft needs a shim as the shaft is just a hair to short and slips out of the yolks. It's a Tekno dogbone style. He also lost a piece of his MIP axle yesterday. Minor problems yes, but very annoying problems. His Stampede runs a Hobbywing Max10 with a 3300 kv Hobbywing motor. It's too much power to keep the wheels on the ground, let alone keep tires on the thing without them shredding to bits. It is running a 14 tooth pinion and the OEM spur gear. If he eases into the throttle, he can get it just a hair shy of 75 mph via GPS data logger. Like I said though, it's getting tired.
The Rock Rey will drive much different than the Stampede. It will feel more planted and predictable. Check out my modified video for the Rock Rey - it needs just a couple of items to be close to perfect
is it as good as a yeti or better
How do you install the vattera locker into the center differential
Pull the center diff out and remove the spider gears inside. I did have to trim a bit of the locker to get it to fit properly....just by using a dremel and a cut off wheel. Assemble the diff and re-install
i got the super rock rey for 600 on sale. its insane after a few steering and gearing upgrades
Nice! Happy RCIng
Are there any necessary things to do to make it water /mud proof??
I believe it's pretty much water resistant ( no Rc is a submarine) except for the receiver....you'll want to water-proof the receiver and you should be good
@@TheRCNetwork thank you so much for the response guy I bought mine off of said it was fully water proof but I jumped it into a puddle and it stopped getting signal from the remote till it dried out
I'll keep my 22-3.0 buggy and yeti thank you. Axial is still the king of scale offroad
Yep, I won't give up my Yeti either.....but check out my upgraded Rock Rey: th-cam.com/video/9eltoMcj9fM/w-d-xo.html
I'd race you in a heartbeat if I could
June 17th Cherry Valley Raceway
Right now, and forseeable future, oklahoma. Sorry bud, nowhere close to cali. But if you're ever out here there's some amazing trails to run
Sounds good!
I do like this truck but I want the Baja Ray 👍🏻👍🏻
The BR is a pretty cool truck
Do you know where too find a motor gearing diagram
From what I remember, there's notches on the motor mount with numbers indicating for the teeth of the pinion. If you're asking about which pinion to run with which motor? I don't know that there is one for this truck. here's the owners manual but I didn't see any mention. www.horizonhobby.com/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-horizon-master/default/dwf36684bc/Manuals/LOS03009-Manual-EN.pdf
The lock Front Diff: Twin Hammers how do you install that part?
That is a cool rig, but I could not deal with the screws. The only car I have with screws is a RC4WD Marlin Crawler and I just put set screws on and use them as posts.
Main reason it's no longer in my collection. Hated working on it and dealing with diff issues
That 3s battery you choose fit in the battery compartment? Can’t find any 3s that will fit in the stock compartment
I've used many that fit...the main issue is not damaging the balance plug wires when getting the battery in and out - here's what I've tried: Dynamite Reaction 5000mah, GensAce 5000mah, MaxAmps 5450mah - all fit
The RCNetwork awesome and thank you for all you do and effort you put into these videos!! A lot of ppl think it’s easy and don’t realize how much knowledge they get off of these videos! Thanks again for list of batteries. Gonna try and get some money up for the Maxamps, seeing I love my kit and sure I will get the money worth out of thebattery !!
Think i might buy it as it is $399 now. anything new out better as a basher currently?
There's the new Lasernut - which is FIS (fully independent suspension) but it's had some troubles with driveshafts and breakages lately. I'd still go Rock Rey
@@TheRCNetwork Thanks for the input
I like it :o) Should be ok to run a 3s 5000mah 35c no prob hey? That's what I have. Don't think it needs 50c.
Where did you buy the servo horn?
For the stock servo, this will work: TLR22 23t servo horn for stock servo: amzn.to/2plyfWI
ok thank you
i am propably going to buy the rock rey or the yeti someone can say wich i should get
caspar jenk out of rock rey is faster, and claims to be more durable, but the yeti is more of a scale truck, so if you plan on upgrades and want a scale look, id go with the yeti, (at the moment there are more after market parts) But if you want out of the box, the rock rey will probably do it
What does a locked center diff do exactly?
It transfers power to both front and rear axles equally, which is great for rock crawling, but not great for track/general use. For U4RC, it's requires to make it equal to other RC's in the 2.2 Indy Class
I like the 1/10 Yeti. Built 2 and still have a nib kit. 16 body screws? No way
Hi rich !
was wondering if you could do a review of the HPI E-Firestorm flux ? please, i'm really interested in this one
thank you
I would buy it on looks alone. 16 body screws though...I definitely wouldn't use all of them :P
Yeah agree, I just plain like the looks of this thing.
I honestly feel like that’s too high of a price especially since a component broke that quick. At the price point they are selling it for it should come with a battery and charger.
Yeah, I can see that...but in comparison to others, it's in line price-wise. Most RC's in this category don't come with batteries/chargers due to the US regulations on shipping lipo batteries
I’m getting mine off Facebook for $225 with a charger
I'm looking to get the rock ray or the yeti or the Bomber. I'll be doing some rock crawling and some trail and some u4rc racing
Great video, good info. Really want to drive this on a U4 course through the rocks.... #skiptomylu #bitchencameraaction
It's nice but man those screw! just like my twin hammers what a pain in the..... to get the body off!
Bind n Drive on sale for $249 right now!
You can't beat that!
You wouldn't think color choices would matter but according to some Tower,Ebay, and Amazon reviews,The Yellow and Black Rock Rey is getting great reviews but the Black and Blue not so much... I'm not that superstitious but it's got me wondering which one to get. I was wanting the black and blue but I might just go with the black and yellow 😂
Jonny Depth they’re identical. I believe they made more of the black and yellow, so there might be more reviews that leveled it out.
I don't like the AVC either. I have a standalone gyro instead. It's more predictable. AVC makes decisions that make no sense to me, like refusing to steer the wheels as much as I'm telling it to because it prefers understeer instead of oversteer. I almost ran into my own feet several times because of that.
What aboute the brake disks
What aboute them?
I wish they were $450 in NZ! They are three or four times that here! $450 is cheap as chips! I’d buy two!
Yeah, they do expensive further away from the US
ok so rich if you will choose one rock rey or yeti rtr? just choose one. it will help me decide which one i will get.
I have a Yeti with VP upgrades and the RR. On 2S the RR is as fast as the Yeti on 3S (many runs have demonstrated their basically the same speed in top end)...on 3S the RR blows the Yeti away. The Yeti needs lots of upgrades just to hold together (HD bevel gears, all alum links and strong lower rear arms, alum C hubs and knuckles, different ESC, alum rack etc). The RR needed nothing. I've owned my RR for 2 1/2 months and have driven it so much and I've tightened a driveshaft screw and glued a ripped tyre (hit a log). Nothing has broken apart from having the stock servo horn actually stripped out of the box (I'm not kidding) and the AVC RX failed after about 5 weeks (went crazy) and was replaced under warranty. I put in the 23T TLR servo horn from the vid and a Spectrum DSMX 3ch RX so like Rich I won't be running AVC (I like it without but it worked well none the less on about 1/4). The RR is clearly a better truck than a Yeti; out of the box. The RTR Yeti needs about another 60% spent on it just to be reliable and it's still far slower. I like my Yeti too.
thanks for commenting bro bcoz actually if i bought 1 of this bashers it will be my first all of my rc are crawlers and now i really want to try fast trucks.
I think out of the box, the Rock Rey has the edge on the Yeti. It's a bit more durable, faster and slightly larger
The RCNetwork yes, and vp is already getting to work on it.
I have one I just bought a few days ago . I upgraded the plastic horn that broke he was taking about . to the metal gear . also upgraded with all aluminum steel lower links . Added a lot of racing parts also . Got the the biggest battery I could get for it . Yes I have ALOT MORE money in it but I wanted it like I wanted it . It will leave a stock one like this like it is sitting still . It is that damn fast . I even put better gears in it . I have the blue one . My mistake was it was dark and even tho it has led lights . I tried it out in my house like a damn idiot . It left 4 black burnout marks on my hardwood before I could even let go of the trigger . But the bad was when it went thought the damn sheetrock in my living room . BUT I wiped the car off and you can't even tell it . It is one bad SOB . Same thing my wife called me when she seen the hole and black marks . It is to fast for what I wanted . I wanted a fast rock crawler . NOT one that will jump the whole pile.
Great! Gotta love RC - have a great one
I turn 41 June 12 but I got this early for my birthday haven't had an rc
since I was a kid 👍 can anyone kind of give me a list of things I might need including tools and replacement parts yes I realize he stated a couple in the video I just want to get completely set up proper. also the body and paint patterns on these are ugly as hell to me are there any other body options. thanks for your time. Brian.
big ugly AKA. Oprah's minge you probably won't find any different bodies for it, but you probably can get a clear one you can paint yourself. as far as tools go, I'd recommend starting with a set of mip hexes. they're pricey, but you'll only need to buy them once. rich has a whole feature series called tool Tuesday. check it out, there's some good stuff there. there are plenty of rc forums out there too to check out. rich has his website, and there's a whole bunch of other ones.
thanks for the info 👍
big ugly AKA. Oprah's minge you're welcome
Nice! Early gifts are always nice! grab yourself these to start off: amzn.to/2p2qKAp
130 amp? couldn't it run 4 or 5s?
Probably, definitely on 4S, that motor is a 2800kv. I run the 120a Hobbying version of that ESC in a heavier E-Revo with a 4065 sized 2700kv motor on 4S. It barely gets warm even when bashing hard. The Rock Rey also has Mod 1 metal gears, similar to 8th scale cars.
According to Losi, the ESC is limited to 3s. I'm sure the 2800kv motor could take 4s....but temps will dictate how long that combo will last. I wouldn't advise it and the Rock Rey really doesn't need 4s....it's plenty fast on 3s
I would take what Losi's customer service guys say with a grain of salt. I mention this because the ESC timing on my Baja Rey was set at 15 degrees, but was supposed to be set at zero. When I asked them what the wind the motor was, they had no clue. I can tell you that the Dynamite 130 (Hobbywing) will definitely program for 4S under auto detection, though you can set it specifically to run on 4S with a program card or using the transmitter. I agree the Rock Rey doesn't need it, I would stick with 3S and just change the pinion.
Awesome review Rich! Go check out JEC Racing on Facebook for some stainless steel lower links! They are a work of art, super durable, and really balance out this rig nicely! Keep up the great videos!long time fan!
hmm... lots of body screws? that sounds familiar.
Exo Terra anyone? lol
The RCNetwork mine is still on the shelf. I've got a pile of parts for it, but I haven't touched it since I don't really want to work on it. other stuff keeps coming up which is more important.
I wonder how a 4076 motor would do in that rig
It would start breaking things....throw off all of the suspension from the added weight of the motor and the 4s battery to push it. Plus, you're mentioning a 1/8th scale truggy sized motor - which pushes around a 10lb+ race rig.....
Where are they selling for 450
This video was made 6 years ago….
Just change the servo arm and you'll be good stripped it out about a half hour in the trail
It did it for me....did you use a quality aluminum servo horn?
It looks better than the Yeti
The Yeti is more scale....The Rock Rey looks faster/futuristic
DX2 and stripped servo horn in the first run??? 450 is too much. I got my 8ight 2.0 with a DX3R for that price
Why is everything named Ray like Losi Rock Ray Losi Baja Rey
I’m sold......
It's a great IFS buggy
well i am not impressed with mine, firts battery servo horn striped but not bad 11$ for a aluminum one, 3rd battery front diff went and transmision is slipping and all that on grass and sand no rock just little stuff. But great service they sent me new parts free of charge.
ouch the 16 screws is a bit of a turnoff , Reminds me the horrible body removal of the AXIAL EXO, my friend still have his exo but it performs like crap (My friend is no Tuner He his 100% Basher ) . I hope Losi sells a couple of them . It looks nice but not my cup of Tea ....
Is the Losi TEN-SCBE worth $500.00 ? :>)
Little bit different platform, but I think it is....I have owned 3 Ten SCTE's at my time here (loosely based close to the SCBE) It's a pretty tough platform and well worth the money
I'm having a problem with Horizon Hobby and their return policy. I returned an unopened ESC and on the second day of them having received the package customer service told me it might take up to 10 more days for them to check it in. 10 days ! I've dealt with AMain and they refunded my card within 6 hours of receiving my package. And similar experience with tower hobbies. I strongly discourage anyone from shopping with Horizon Hobby. On top of that both people I talked to there had An attitude with me. Very disappointed with such a large company as they are. Sounds like they need employees in the receiving area not attitude with paying customers. AVOID HORIZON HOBBY !!
Johnny Davis I hear ya, but many times, they're giving you the worse case scenario.....with a long ship time and of course weekends, etc. be patient, you'll probably see a credit before you know it.
Sadly, over here it is about £500
The Axial Yeti is much more better than those two actually losi copied form Axial Yeti ... After Horizon Hobby brought Axial They copy of things from Axial ... 😊
That's debatable. I made a whole review comparing the Yeti to the Rock Rey. They both have issues, but the Rock Rey would still be my "goto" for an IFS/SRA RC. The Yeti is the OG though.....but has many, many issues. When Horizon bought Hobbico, they ended up discontinuing theYeti and Score Trophy Truck from Axial as the Rock Rey and Baja Rey were already out and they didn't want the competition.
is to slow...42 mph with 3s
It’s an off road truck.....no need to go 80mph. It’s made for rocks, obstacles and jumps, not the tarmac. 😃👍
I guess you are around 13 years old. That’s what my son think..come back in 5 years and we are going to explain you the difference.. crawler/ off road/ short course/ speed racing/ drag racing…
350 yes, but not 450 . . . never
In comparison to others on the market, its a good value
