I was a young kid when this happened and I can tell you, A LOT of people were pissed! At first some of us thought maybe it was a cross-promotional thing like what we’ve seen with ROH/Impact. When we realized later on that it was a buyout, it was a shock moment!

Mick Foley used that New York, New York joke to get heat when he left ECW. As Cactus Jack, he danced in the ring to the song. The S'marks knew he was leaving for WWF after that night. They boo'ed him initially, but later they clapped for him as he left the arena while fans held "Good luck!" and "We'll miss you!" type signs.

First off - WWF Tuesday Night Titans was awesome. So was Prime Time. It gave us a chance to see wrestlers away from the ring and showcased some of their personal interests. Fun stuff. Black Sunday was a slap in the face of any real die hard NWA fan. It was an attempt by Vince to become more global, but it came too early. The death of the territories was mainly due to them being run by old guys who did NOT adapt with the times. By the time they tried to do something right - Super Clash's - it was too late. I was furious when GCW was taken off the air and celebrated like crazy when NWA tv returned

Anything pre-87 or so pro wrestling is never coming back. It's much too slow for today's fast-paced craving viewer. And nobody is going to sit through hour-long shows full of jobber matches. That's what has changed. NJPW doesn't do a lot of cartoon wrestling, though they have a few comedy characters. AEW doesn't really have comedy gimmicks. They might have some gimmicks that are silly (hello, dinosaur), but they haven't done a comedy match yet. And this is coming from someone who watched pro wrestling since fall 1979.

Living in New Jersey we already had about 10 hours of WWF wrestling on TV. Georgia Championship Wrestling was my all time favorite wrestling program. Everyone from my family to my friends new not to bother me from 6:05 to 8:05 every Saturday. That night when I turned on TBS and saw the WWF and Vince McMahon it was like the earth stood still. I was inconsolably devastated. If I new where to find McMahon I would still be in prison. That's what Black Saturday was like. And despite how things turned out wrestling was never the same again. Now it's 36 years later and Vince McMahon has finished the job and completely destroyed the sport. The idiotic fool destroyed the territories, in turn destroying his farm system, hence cutting his own throat. The WWF always stole established stars from elsewhere. They wouldn't know how to discover or train a wrestler if they're existence depended on it. So the garbage you have today is the direct result of Vince McMahon's non existent wrestling knowledge. Both Vince Sr. And Jr. might be good promoters but they both new absolutely nothing about how to create a pro wrestler. And that's why the sport is dead, buried, and will never return. Simply because those that are now left in charge of pro wrestling know nothing about it and never did to begin with.

    • @mkl62

Vincent James to me was a fair promoter. He respected the others. He was even on the NWA Board that decided who would wear the belt. I've heard that he was the one who convinced the others to let Flair win the belt in 1981.

    • @C-Lyfe85

I totally agree. They paint the narrative like Vince McMahon is such a genius, especially at creating Stars.
When he was at his peak, in the 80s, all of those wrestlers, where somebody else's creation.
After that Hulkamania 80s era ended.
You saw what the WWF created, dentists, plumbers, hockey players.
Had no clue what to do.
Those were the Dark Ages, until the late 90s.
Only thing that saved the "new generation", was those real to Life characters.
Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, you didn't have to create those characters, they were true to life.

    • @donwilcox728
      @donwilcox728 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@C-Lyfe85 Yes see you get it. Even the WWE so called new generation of stars was never Vince's creation. The Rock was trained by his dad Rocky Johnson and started in Memphis, Kurt Angle was trained and started in Memphis, Triple H got his training and started in WCW, Sean Michaels was trained by Jose Lothario and started in the AWA, and Steve Austin was trained by Chris Adams and started in Dallas. Even guys like Brock Lesnar, John Cena, Batista and others were discovered and trained by Jim Cornette and Danny Davis in Ohio Championship Wrestling. Now once everyone who new anything about pro wrestling is either dead or retired and it's completely up to Vince McMahon Jr. you see the results. Pro wrestling is dead and buried. Stephanie McMahon is a complete fraud along with her daddy. Finally it's up to the McMahon's to show what THEY can do and the results are disgraceful and embarrassing. But hey anyone who new anything about good professional wrestling from the 1970s and early 80s saw this coming a long time ago. It's no surprise at all. The McMahon's both Sr. and Jr. have been users going all the way back to Bruno. The only difference was that Sr. was smart enough to realized what he was and new he needed others with wrestling knowledge to succeed. Vince Jr. on the hand thought he new it all when in fact he new nothing. And as time went on and he destroyed who he needed he has exposed himself to be the fraud he has always been.

I wouldmake a point that the powers-that-be gave McMahon the money, and influence. To take over the business. They hated pro wrestling and they wanted it to be one contained entity.
They tried to monopolize the business in the 80s and didn't accomplish their goals till the early 2000s.

Several things came together to destroy the territories.
    1) Vince McMahon
He wanted them dead, and he got his wish.
    2) cable TV
Territory wrestling depended on the local promotion having the monopoly on local TV. He could tailor his promotion to local tastes, but there was no competition.
    3) ECW
“We broke all the rules, then we realized why they had rules.”
Simple things like protecting your finish.
    4) UFC
In the NWA days, the fans had seen what was presented and bought it as real. With UFC, the fans could now see what really real looks like. See also: territory wrestling worked when there was no local competition.
    5) Vince Russo.
His Jerry Springer booking was the nail in the coffin for two of WWE’s competitors, WCW and TNA.
    6) Eric Bishoff
Not for the usual reasons, but why would you sign a contract to give creative control to the boys?
