    The first 40 seconds of this video is probably what ever conversation Jim Barnett had with every wrestler that ever got a push while he was in power sounded like.

    The thing I remember about Barnett is that he was not worried about people knowing he was gay in a time when it was illegal . Instead he kept secret that he was Jewish .

    Jim Barnett is SO fascinating. I’ve only been able to find one old Australian news clip with him actually talking on it. Its also funny that in a world of make believe like Pro Wrestling nobody till this day knows if Barnett really lived a glamorous life or was he just “Working the boys”. What if the Jim Barnett ppl fondly remember him as was just a total gimmick lol

    I actually did research on Kohler a while back. He was already successful going into the DuMont deal to the point that he was Sam Muchnik's biggest rival, and they were bitter ones at that. When Kohler took the network deal, Muchnik even green lit his former buisness partner to compete with him for Chicago, with NWA support, causing Kohler's first departure with the organization. His ace in the whole in competing with the NWA was Verne Gagne, he managed to get the young star so over that fans were mistaking his regional championship for Lou Thesz's world title. DuMont was tremendously lucrative, giving him more access than any other competing promotion of the time, a hefty payment, and the Marigold Arena which was massive. But DuMont collapsed royally and Wrestling from the Marigold was cancelled five years or so later, leaving them with a regional broadcast that ended two years after that. Verne was hugely expensive bringing in 100,000 a year, the highest of any wrestler at the time, Eddie Quinn was making moves into Chicago, and eventually costs would make Pfefer's circus act a little more appealing. He didn't even keep the Marigold, it was sold to a nondenominational church to stay afloat. He was near bankrupt when he brokered an alliance with Vince Sr that saw him make a huge rebound but it was too little too late and he was forced to sell. I believe he was suffering health issues as well and passed away in 1969, 5 years after selling to Gagne, Dick the Bruiser, and Crusher.

    • @Jim-Tuner
      @Jim-Tuner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There was extreme bad blood between Kohler and Verne Gagne in the 1960s. The story has typically been that Gagne fronted the money to Bruiser to get the deal to buy Chicago done, but kept his involvement in the deal secret right up until the point it was finalized. Its said that Kohler would have never sold knowingly to Gagne and would have pursued any other option (including just going out of business).
      Kohler never really recovered from the collapse of Dumont and getting kicked off WGN. The deal with Vince Sr. kept him going for a little while, but he just didn't have the TV or the money to continue. Pfefer was just one more attempt to save the promotion by cutting costs.

    • @n0m4nic
      @n0m4nic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jim-Tuner I would suspect there would be considering how much Kohler meant to building Gagne's career. He even officiated the match where Gagne "won" the NWA title off Thesz. The money he spent must have killing him. Though the WWWF deal did see him his biggest draw ever, yeah, the IWA was dead on arrival.
      Just as an aside, the Rainbow Arena he used to work out of before DuMont has an interesting history. It saw a number of different businesses take over and was converted into a roller ring before eventually being torn down. But while the building was being demolished, construction crews made a surprising discovery. Beneath the building, they found the body of an unidentified woman.

      Jim Barnett was very valuable to Kohler as well. Jim did really create the wrestling format for television wrestling ( DuMont). Barnett was also Kohler’s road agent for other territories who want to borrow Dick the Brusier, Snyder, and Gagne. Obviously Jim was Kohler’s workhorse. By 1960, Jim left Kohler to promote it on his own (Indy, Louisville and Detroit). Kohler (when NWA President) was vindictive of Jim leaving Chicago. That he refused to vote Jim into the NWA board. Jim did not become a board member until the late 60’s via Sam Munchnik, who valued Jim’s knowledge of wrestling TV.

    McMahon was a fool to not check Barnett's non-wrestling background or even read a Washington Post article dated April 3, 1980 which noted how Barnett was appointed by U.S. President Jimmy Carter as a member of the National Endowment of the Arts. Even when he was a major figure in the Georgia Championship Wrestling sale, there was no sign that Barnett backed away from his loyalty to the Georgia-bred U.S. President who publicly made clear to Chappaquiddick Ted Kennedy that he would "whip his ass."

    I wonder how much the early wrestling culture and magazines intermingled with the underground gay subculture back in the 40"s - 60's? It seems like there were a lot of common elements, and by that I mean, the need to keep certain things quiet. And of course, half naked dudes grappling with each other haha. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It just seems like the early wrestling publications would be tailor made for the gay community

    Montgomery Clift was in Raintree County and not Rock Hudson. It could have been Giant (1956) There were scenes where Hudson was in "Maryland" that could have been in Kentucky.

    So did Barnett leave promoting in 1964 because of Kentucky U? Jim was the monetary booster of these parties. Guilt by association perhaps scared him away from the United States for 8 years. He figured he could lay low make money down under, and come back when the coast was clear... until Atlanta was ripe for the taking....
