To make the brim stay stiff without going through the glue process, crochet a couple of extra rows without increasing and one with a few stitches decreased. This will make the brim do that elegant wave we love in big sun hats.
Regarding the brim, if you fold over the edge and sew it down it creates a casing you can then thread some 3mm boning through to stretch it out. I join the ends of the boning at the back of the hat but using an awl to put a hole in each end and sew together. You could probally use a glue gun too. Now even if the hat gets wet it will keep the brim stretched out in shape. Trust me - it works great! awesome.
I love crochet so I get really excited when you do a crochet project. I don't know how to knit or sew but I watch those videos too because I love your personality. The bucket hat is great! It looks really good on you. I might have to make one. Thanks for being a bright spot on the internet. ❤
I just realized today that you're the only vlogger that I will listen to that is not an actual tutorial to tune my brain to! That says a lot for you, Jenna... You don't even know.... I guess I love your spark and gumption. And...I think you're actually helping me with PTSD.
I bought a straw/raffia large brimmed bucket hat that had a thin piece of wire weaved inbetween the stitches along the brim and it worked like a charm and you are also able to bend to make it assume whatever shape you wish.
I'm loving all the crochet videos! I recently got back into crocheting, so I appreciate all the inspiration. Edit: Also commented before I saw the swift and ball winder -- I literally just got my swift an hour ago and it really is the most satisfying thing! I almost wish I had more hank yarns.
The last hat I crocheted had you go back and do surface slip stitches in a spiral along the whole brim and it stiffened it really well. I like your modpodge hack too. The hat looks great! Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely eyeball everything. i have personally never followed a pattern. I actually just finished crocheting a matching top-bottom outfit, and I was SOOOOO happy that the shorts fit. I need to weave in a billion ends and get the pockets done too. No pattern, though!
Very nice! I’ve found that I can make the more complicated afghan squares easier when I do all of one color at a time, so start with making four green centers then four blue petals, etc. As far as I’m aware there not really a difference in yarn for knit vs crochet, but some fiber types work better with other materials e.g. I typically like plastic hooks with my sticky linen types but bamboo with the slick rayon, so your hook may be making a difference there. In the future, you can try making a stiffer fabric (for the brim) by going down a hook size or trying back loop only single crochets, which are a little denser than the typical sc and can have a stiffer effect depending on your yarns
I've been following your videos for a while and trying out things here and there but this hat is the first thing I fully succeeded at and I'm in love with mine 🥰
Going from high pitched girly squeals to sucker punching the air is literally the emotional process I go through when I finish a crochet project and am trying it on for the first time 😂😂
Girlll I’m happy you do crochet videos because you inspired me to crochet and I always watch your crochet videos when I crochet because it keeps me busyy 😁
