    I know this is an older video, but holy shit thank you for the super in detail videos dude. I just built my first engine/D series and that screw driver trick for the head studs saved me so much time.

    I like watching people put motor together... I just love engines that much... especially underdogs... I'll never forget the first time I went for a ride in a boosted Mini-Me that was built. I remember one time we were driving along and it started making a clattering sound and I thought we spun a rod bearing or something and he was all nonchalant pullover. He threw a couple quarts of oil in it hopped back in the passenger seat and said let's go so I started it up it sounded fine... I was in awe. It ran for over another year at 32 lb of boost with a 60-1 in it. Oh I thought I'd bring this up. either I've been using my ring compressor backwards or you are. you're supposed to be able to tighten it up while the Piston is sliding in.

    Nice engine build... just to give you a heads-up you're using your piston ring compressor upside down. When the horizontal band goes around the Rings it tightens the Rings a little tighter than the rest of the Piston making it easier to go into the block. Also really surprised you didn't clean the deck or the head before putting the head on.

    What measurements you used for piston ring gaps?

  • @AlfredoPachecoJr
    @AlfredoPachecoJr 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Don't know if you did this before hand/off camera.
    Aren't you suppose to place the piston rings inside the cylinder first, use the piston to guide it in evenly, then measure the gap and file down until you reach a certain thickness?
    I remember having to do this on my wife's 03 Santa Fe and brothers '79 305 big block.

    • @hondahowto
      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Alfredo Pacheco Jr You are correct. I set the ring gaps before I made the video. A lot of people have commented about that. I'm kind of beating myself up about it because I didn't think anybody would want to see it.

      Honda How To yeah i really wanted to know about those ring gaps, whats the rule of thumb for them?

    • @hondahowto
      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jevvy boss it really all depends on what your building for. If its naturally aspirated then you can run a tight ring gap. If your running a little bit of boost you might want to widen the gap a bit. We are running alot of boost so our ring gap is really high. I would rather have this engine have a little bit of blow by than blowing out the rings. Thats what they make oil catch cans for lol.

      Depends on how much power you are looking for, anything under 300hp it would hold that no problem, past that on a d series, I would either sleeve it or send it off to css like we did

Stock cranckshaft, the block is notched, eagle h-beam connecting rods, ARP main studs, 9:1 compression JE pistons, cylinder support systems block guard, ACL racing oil pump, cometic 3 layer metal head gasket, ARP head studs, ported and polished cylinder head, suptertech valves, springs, and retainers, brian crower stage 2 cam, vms adjustable cam gear, gates racing blue timing belt, edlebrock performer x intake manifold, Grams 1150cc injectors, skunk2 70mm throttle body, 4 bar map sensor, competition stage 4 clutch, and a fidanza flywheel. The engine is completely balanced and blueprinted. And for engine management we are using a Hondata S300. whew lol

    is the cam oem or aftermarket. how much was the short block it looks like its been sleeved? there another channel "boostedboiz" that built a d-series and they hire over 400hp at like 30psi but they drilled and tapped the block for b-series head studes

    • @hondahowto
      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Kyle Arnold well the head is not stock. It has a stage 2 Brian crower turbo cam, and it has a full supertech valvetrain, so it has supertech valves, springs and retainers. And the block isn't sleeved, a company called Cylinder Support Systems did a guard in the block. And the Cylinder Support Systems can handle almost as much as sleeves. There's a 900hp s2000 running on a css block which is pretty cool.

    @robertoruiz7069 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    he used the install tool upside down.The band closest to the end goes to the block ,that way it keeps the full tightness of the band on the ring.they're are also 3 protrusions on the bottom that helps keep the thin metal from going into the cylinder sleeve.he's right about the lube,use oil and lots of it.the rest of the build looks great.

      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blia Thao to dial in a cam it all depends. Any cylinder head work, stuff like that. And with a bisi x that's a pretty agressive cam, so you would need to look into some engine management like a hondata s300

      pte 6062

      good luck with the built. like to see these single slamming down the road

    • @hondahowto
      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blia Thao that's a pretty impressive setup you gotta let me know how that twin scroll works out I'm kind of curious. And that bisi cam that's what we were going to run but it was a little too aggressive for our street setup.

    • @hondahowto
      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blia Thao I would think someone would have to screw with your hondata to get that thing to run on that cam. Maybe screw with the timing a bit. I've never really screwed with a cam that insane before. Just pretty mild stuff.

    Hi Honda How To,
    I am planning on running an eagle rod/vitara piston combo on my d16z6 with a fairly large turbo (gt3071r) and its pretty laggy up until 4k rpms. I was considering leaving the head stock, but I want to rev higher as the turbo will make good power on the top end.
    Which valve springs and retainers are you running? I have been having trouble on deciding what to get.
    Thanks!

    • @hondahowto
      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Rangel we are running a full supertech turbo valvetrain, valves, springs, and retainers. And we are also running a Brian Crower stage 2 turbo cam as well, and it's ported and polished with a pretty agressive valve job. The head should rev over 8k with no problems. Maybe 8.5k that would be sweet. lol

  • @TheLifeOfMartin

    what was the head calibrated to? also, the torque on the head for a small turbo, would 60-65 be sufficient??

    • @hondahowto
      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Red Panda even stock tourqe would be good for a low boost setup. Over tourqe specs isn't really a good thing to do, but I did it because the engine is going to see over 20 psi of boost. And I'm not sure what you mean by calibrated the head?

    • @TheLifeOfMartin

      Honda How To oh yeah, another question. would I be able to have A/C in my 97-98 civic with turbo?

    • @hondahowto
      @hondahowto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Red Panda you bet. they make turbo kits specifically for keeping a/c. I've heard that you have to modify it a little bit but not much. All the cars I've ever turboed haven't had a/c.

    • @TheLifeOfMartin
      @TheLifeOfMartin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honda How To sweet. I don't wanna have to have no a/c for the boost and I'm also only trying to go to like 250 hp on my d16
