This sounds like the ancient piano I inherited from my grandmother... and my favorite thing to play was the Moonlight Sonata... this brings back so many memories, for indeed, pianos no longer sound like this...

Thank goodness they don't... This is like one of those nightmare instruments that you find walking on stage that someone switched after a previous rehearsal.... out of tune, bad soundboard, dysfunctional hammers, no resonance due to improper overtone balance... just brutal... Nice try though.. some people like sand in their shoes

I've heard the short and light action can really help with dynamics and articulation. This really proves how much that can help! Truly beautiful. (also at 2:02 there's a extraordinarily rude teapot)

I like it much better on this piano also, each note has its own special timbre and expressive quality, like an orchestra which the pianist can balance as she wishes, holding of the pedal doesnt produce a muddy sound, soo nice!
Also I feel like this is the first time Ive really understood how amazing the second movement is due to this, modern pianos erase those color and timbral qualities which make the juxtaposition between first, second, and third move so special and compositionally important
She played it very well. Not many can play this piece that well. I think it was more her than the piano. Listen to Claudia play it. He was the best at this piece in my opinion.
Great job, I feel very lucky to hear this work on this instrument! I hate modern pianos (or should I say the Steinway cartel) more and more these days! Also, very funny to see an Ipad and this piano together
You wonder just how old this piano is...sounds like at least early 1900's, maybe late 1800's. And LOL...that teapot in the background...how'd you not get thrown off by that? Gods, but that would have majorly distracted me.
@@RenaissanceEarCandy It's where I tend to frequent, so I needed a user name that would last, and that sounded unique but not silly, like my previous one did, so I took it from being stuck in traffic on time on the Mass Pike, otherwise known as interstate 90.
Nice playing. Be sure to "connect" aurally your LH bass notes with the RH melody. Meaning, when the LH moves to a point, harmonically where it's actually anticipating the harmonic change, make sure we really hear that connection to the RH when it happens. This is a "timing" thing as much as a voicing thing.
Been playing the Moonlight Sonata 1st movement for 45 years. Never heard the 2nd and 3rd movements completely until today, and to hear them played on such a wonderful old piano is a revelation. I wish I could play all three movements like that.
Almost the best I've heard this classic played. Played impeccable but still falls just short of the way Claudia played it. So congrats! I love this song and have listened to literally hundreds of people play it. This is is a close second to Claudia. Also, I know that's a special piano, but I prefer a more traditional grand piano, preferably Steinway. And better mic placement for recording.
Do you mean with the sustaining pedal held down throughout (dampers up throughout)? There are different ways of interpreting that. It could mean using the sustaining pedal all the time, changing it with each change of harmony. (This is what she is doing.) When this sonata was written, that was an unusual way of playing. The sustaining pedal was only used occasionally for special effects (as you see in the 3rd movement). Beethoven is being quite experimental here.
This is one of the best *interpretations* of moonlight sonata I’ve heard and people are really out here telling her “how she should have played it” ☝️🤓 Foh
This is a revelation. 73 years on the planet and I have heard a real piano for the first time. So much more shade and emotion. Wonderful.

You heard a really out of tune piano for the 1000th time.
There is a kettle boiling sound?
Then you have never heard any serious pianists in those 73 years.

So lovely, with wonderfully subtle rubato in the first movement. Nice to hear such an old piano sing so musically.

Thank you for not playing so excruciating slowly like many of your collegues did and do (mvt. 1).
I prefer it slower. First 2 mvts. Claudia was the best at this.
Thank you. Pitch and resonance sounds remarkably like my great aunts ancient parlour piano in the 70s.

Bravo 🎉
Inispiring! Thanks.
Completely different sound, from the first touch of the first note. As if i have never heard a piano before. Thank you.
Technique and musicality both superb. Brava!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It's a Conrad Graf piano, so it would have been made in the early 1800s. Is Cambridge in your username because that's where you are?

Original Graf? Very rare!
Is this piano tuned on 432 hz?
2:10 was that a kettle?
Yeah, right. As if no one had ever heard a fortepiano before.
Unnecessary comment.
I UNDERSTAND THE SUPPOSED INTENTIONS OF BEETHOVEN´S USE OF THE DAMPER PEDAL BUT SOMEHOW I AM NOT CONVINCED.

it should have been played on a single pedal

This piano sucks, or the acustics suck. Or both.
