I've been watching "sewing for beginners" videos on and off for years, and always get so frustrated as the teachers use terminology that beginners wouldn't know as they don't sew yet. I always feel lost and learn nothing. This is the first video I found that ACTUALLY speaks to beginners! I love it, thank you for the simplicity and detailed explanations!

I have been seeing for 50+ years and will be helping someone else to learn to use her machine. Your video is excellent! I know I have picked up shortcuts and maybe even some bad habits over the years, so you have helped me to prepare to teach the basics to someone with no experience. I believe that EVERYONE should be able to sew enough to accomplish some basic mending and alterations and have a basic machine at the ready. Knowing how to sew has been a tremendous blessing in my life and the lives of my family, and the ability to create clothing and other items to keep or gift to others is an empowering and creative experience. You are doing a great job and I am thoroughly enjoying your accent too!

I absolutely love that these are videos for actual beginners. They don't assume I know anything at all (which indeed I don't), so I'm loving this. I had no idea about the thread or the needles or any of it, and I love that you're going through everything bit by bit. A lot of "beginner"-videos I see sort of assume you already know how to thread your machine, so I cannot stress enough how helpful these videos are. Sod the haters and keep at it. Oh and also, English isn't my first language, and while I am pretty much fluent, the spoken language can occasionally be hard to understand, but you are speaking clearly and are well articulated, so thank you for that too.

I haven't sewn (on a machine) in over 35 years. I just bought a new machine (baby lock brilliant) which is by far different from my Mom's old singer i used when i was 16. Figured i should start with the basics. I watched several other videos but this one by far was the most useful to me. Between this video and my new machine's manual i was able to use my machine within minutes and with more confidence than previous tries over the years. I truly can't thank you enough for doing this video! THANK YOU!

Omg... these tutorial videos are absolutely the best for all newbies. Now I know how to sow in a machine, finally. After many years of putting it in back burner, bcz I just didn't spare the time and was afraid of spending the $ on a machine and possibly not going through with it, I did it. These videos are extremely detailed and at a good speed for someone like me, who knew nothing about sowing. My machine is Singer so slightly different in only a couple of things, but with the manual at hand and these videos, wow, im just beyond words. Im so thankful for your videos. They are professional, clear, detailed they are the most helpful I found.

I am enjoying watching your video. Although I'm no beginner, it never hurts to watch and to have a refresher course now and again. It helps me to relearn and to do a recap on the things I already know.
Incidentally, I especially enjoyed this first video for a special reason. I own and use the exact same model sewing machine as you used here, the Husqvarna Viking, Emerald 116. These are true mechanical sewing machines, which is exactly what I need. Moreover, these are real workhorse sewing machines with plenty of power to spare.
I found early on that if I am sewing thick or heavyweight fabrics, owning and using an even feed walking foot really does the machine wonders. Having that added motion that works in tandem with the feed dogs of the sewing machine really makes life a lot easier and far less complicated. I occasionally need to repair my denim jeans or my work pants, and the dense layers makes the machine struggle and bog down. The Even Feed Foot eliminates most of the struggles and really cleans up my work.
I'm just a novice with the sewing machine, but my skills seriously borders on those of a beginner. I subscribed to your channel in the hope of learning a little bit more about my sewing machine. Very well planned and a very well thought out video demo and presentation, thank you. Oh, and I really love your beautiful eyes. Greetings from Homer Alaska.

Hello! So lovely that you have enjoyed this video. Wonderful to hear that you have the same sewing machine too. I use this machine in lots of my videos. I had 4 of them (still do) in the UK for my classes; they are great work horse machines. Happy to tackle pretty much every fabric!
Wishing you all the best in Alaska. I hope you had a nice summer. I am currently living in the North of Australia, tropical weather so it’s hot all the time! Missing the colder weather.

My granpa was a tailor. Before WWII he traveled around the area to learn the craft oldschool way. It's sad that he passed away long before I was born, so all the experience and the legacy of his practice was lost. Thanks to my meemaw as a young boy 30 years ago I've learned some basic things with grandpa's old manual Singer machine. And today I feel that I want to connect with my grandpa by sewing. So I'm trying to learn everything from scratch. Thanks for your great advices!!!

All the cool things these newer machines have! I've got an old Singer 401A. I'm always in awe of what I see the new machines doing, they look so user friendly! Automatic tension and needle threading, touch screen displays that give you more options than you know what to do with. For beginners, I think the simple machines are easier and less daunting to use.

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  8 ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Jenna, it is true sewing machines can be very fancy nowadays and you are correct that sometimes this is too much. The machine I use in these tutorials is a basic 'modern' machine, it isn't computerised and bar the needle threader nothing happens automatically. There are lots of positives to this, you can make the machine do what YOU want! Rather than working with a machine that thinks it knows more than you!! Your Singer sounds fab, I do most of my own work on an industrial machine so this is VERY basic too! Good luck with your sewing. Aneka x

I just started teaching myself how to sew. My mom let me borrow her machine. I watched so many videos trying to figure it out to no avail. I was nearly in tears frustrated over this thing. Then I found your channel. You are so detailed and descriptive and it helped me tremendously. I sewed my first stitch on the machine today and yesterday I was ready to give up. Thank you for your amazing videos!

I am luckily given a sewing machine from my mother in law two years ago, I totally have no ideas how to use it. Recently we decided to renovate my boys' bedroom into space theme and I wish I can get some space, fabrics to make them some cushions for the reading nook. I found your channel and all of your videos are very useful, thank you so much for making such a great channel xx

+Natalie Casilli +Natalie Casilli Hi Natalie, what sewing machine do you have? Send me a picture on Facebook or email if you would like and I can see if I can help? All sewing machines are slightly different so it can be difficult if you don't have the manual. We have designed some tutorials that we thought teenager would like, but most of these are product based; Leather Bow Keyring: th-cam.com/video/OImgFmU_amI/w-d-xo.html, Appliqué Keyring: th-cam.com/video/rIVBzRMMYHk/w-d-xo.html, Clutch Bag: th-cam.com/video/_K0gtVfyV5E/w-d-xo.html - let me know your thoughts? Happy to help if I can with your sewing machine!

I thought you could buy them on Amazon.com but not any longer. However you can 'Find a Store' on the Husqvarna Viking website: www.husqvarnaviking.com/Find-a-Store, there seem to be a few in Pennsylvania. The machine I use in all of the videos is a Husqvarna Viking Emerald either the 116 or the 118 (which is slightly more expensive). The 118 has a different food pedal (which some people prefer), more stitches (that are probably not really required for the extra price). But the 188 does offer speed control which is great for beginners and a handy needle up and down function. See what you think, I guess you can visit a store and try one or search for the machine for an online seller? Unfortunately I am in the UK and can't force my browser to show me options in the US. Let me know how you get on and hope this helps! Aneka

I have a sewing machine and admire the talent to sew (I have none). I was thinking of paying for a course but then thought...maybe (not the first time looking) there might be something free and educational on you tube. I’m 20 minutes into your video and am just thrilled to know how to properly place the spool. Like others, I’m thankful for this video.

Super! I love this channel. I would say along with a good sewing machine invest in a nice light. Friends recommended me the Lumiy Lightline LED lamp... stunningly bright so I can really see lots of detail, compact, and affordable.
