Hand-sewing is used very frequently in DIY projects so here are some basic stitches and techniques for beginners.
These are the techniques shown:

Now THIS is a proper beginners sewing tutorial. These stitches are literally the only thing I remember about 7th grade home economics.

This video is pure genius. First the colored threads on a dark cloth so easy to see. Second, the text provided explanation for each stitch. Great for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Every stitch shown was explained so well. Thank you!

Yes I agree. Most videos I watch. I end up skipping on to another one just cause they say 10min worth of useless crap. When the actual information needed was only 30sec to 1 minute long.

I like the bare-bones-no-nonsense approach of this tutorial. It helps the viewer focus on the lesson. I don't own a sewing machine, and I have things to mend and patches to apply. This is the best hand sewing video I've been able to find. Thank you.

i mostly wanna sew for fashion and mending stuff but idk how to thread our sewing machine so i figure learning to sew by hand will be better
Omg after watching so many "how to sew" videos on TH-cam as a beginner, I can hands on my heart say this is the only video that has enabled me to master the sewing basics in less than half an hour (having previously never sewed before!!)

*What is this sorcery?!* The first tip, how to tie the knot by rolling your thumb & finger - I was like, huh? Then I tried it myself, and it worked every time! mind... blown. lol

hello! so, my mom taught me the very very basics of sewing* when I was eight, and now, 22 years later, I want to pick it up as a crafting hobby. the most I've done in the past is sloppily (but functionally 😅) hem my non-formal pants. and just from the first couple of minutes, you have already taught me wayyyy more efficient tying knots and a better way to hold the fabric so I'm not hurting my shoulders and neck.
just from this little video, you have made sewing so much more accessible for me! the tiny annoying things are now less annoying, and hopefully I won't destroy my neck as much 😂

If any of yall wanna cosplay especially if ur doing handmade stuff this is an absolute must or at least strongly recommended
I have absolutely no experience in sewing at all. I've had a lot of free time and I've wanted to pick up a new hobby and this is the first video to actually help me. All the other ones I've watched go straight into stitching and I didn't even know how to apply the thread onto the needle... This was super helpful and easy to follow. Thank you so much!

I can't even put the stupid thread through the needle
That's because the ends of your thread became frayed. Wet the end of the thread a little and rub the end to make it "sharp". That will make it easier to thread the needle.
Try making a little loop and pushing it through, it works for me all the time.
just cut off some thread and see if the thread is straight then it will be easier to pull
You can rub some beeswax on the end of your thread to stop it from fraying while you're putting it through
You can use these thingys to make it EASIER

Thank you for this tutorial. My mom used to do these things for us. I always thought it was magic and amazing how she just does it well. Unfortunately, she passed away recently so I had to also learn these things on my own now.
Just the sheer thought of this video still helps people even after 7 years of being posted does make me smile
I really appreciate that each stitch is given context; as a beginner it has been difficult to know which stitch to use when for me. I've watched other tutorials and tried things out but without any idea of what stitches to use where I just felt kinda lost in the process. This helped a lot! Thanks ☺️

This is by far the most simple tutorial I've seen. Thank you for this. I'm doing my best to learn about this bc out of nowhere, I gained an interest in it, and also my mom does it and she doesn't always have time to sew me something, so I thought I should take matters into my own hands lol
Also, other people's tutorials are good, this was just more straightforward for me, and it's the best video. It's interesting I learned a lot in 5 minutes 😇

Learned the knot trick in 8th grade home economics, still use it today!
The last stich you showed I use all the time but i never went back through the loop. I used to sew on band patches in my punk days that way and today sewed a blanket that had holes from my dog.

Is the blanket stitch known also as overhand stitch
Jervis Dumaliang the blanket stitch is also known as the buttonhole Stitch. The overhand Stitch is a different Stitch all together

well wait, how do you tie off the blanket stitch?
You can tie it off at the adjacent stitch or make 2-3 tight tying off stitches that are on the same spot for reinforcement rather than leaving a gap as you do for the regular blanket stitch =)
