    This free tutorial contains more useful information than some others that I've purchased recently. Thank you! I especially appreciated your explanation of the selvage, and the horizontal and vertical grain lines. I never knew about "truing" the vertical grain line until watching this video. I'm also glad to see that you pin the pattern to the fabric before cutting it out (just like my grandmother used to do). I've recently watched videos by other instructors who suggest that pinning isn't necessary. However, in those same videos, the edges of the fabric pieces they've cut look somewhat uneven and inaccurate. So, I'm going to take your advice and continue to pin my pattern pieces before cutting. It takes so little time to do it, and pinning certainly prevents the pattern piece from slipping! Thanks for these fantastic videos!

      Thank you for your lovely, kind words Megan. I am so pleased that you like my tutorials and style of teaching. I was taught to pin by my grandmother too, a lot of people use weights nowadays and sometimes these can be useful (slippy / stretchy fabric), but most of the time I will still pin. Thank you, Aneka x

The basic knowledge put out in the videos is easily cohesive even for the most as of now ignorant newbie. Great job teaching.

      @@domenicomonteleone3055 Hi Domenico, thank you for your lovely message. Great to hear you have a new hobby. It really depends on what your level is to start with? I would suggest that you get confident with the sewing machine first? Maybe begin with a small project, a lot of the stuff I have is 'female focused' but a wash bag like this could work? My husband has one in tweed and one in wax cotton that he made and they look cool: madetosew.com/how-to-quilted-wash-bag/ Or you could make some Christmas gifts for friends / family? I have lots of beginners detailed tutorials for getting to know your machine. When it comes to garment sewing you could start with a basic t-shirt, or shorts or a shirt even? I must plan more men’s garments for the channel. Open to any suggestions. Thanks, Aneka

      @@domenicomonteleone3055 Well my husband went from sewing pyjamas, to a shirt to a jacket, when he was learning!😆 So you can definitely challenge yourself with a jacket or coat. They are my favourite things to make. Frustratingly I don't have any mens patterns I can share right now, I am just about to launch a leather jacket pattern for women. I will have to do a male version. Very jealous of your cold weather coming, in the north of Australia (where I live at the moment) it is super hot. I would much rather sew a jacket / coat to wear.😃

    Aneka, I am feverishly taking notes as fast as I can type (and I type about 75 WPM). You have a wealth of information in your videos. I just stumbled across your channel. Although these videos are from a few years ago, I hope that you'll continue making videos on beginner sewing various projects that we can try to tackle. My entire life, I've always dreamt that I'd learn how to sew but never got around to it. When I was single, I bought a used machine in 1993 to try and learn but then "life happens" and then it the machine has just been sitting around since. Now that I am finally not working full time (but still am wife and mother)...at age 51, I've decided now is the time. I've waited long enough to pursue my hobby. I've always found sewing intimidating from threading the machine to learning the vocabulary on patterns. It's like a foreign language but you are so VERY thorough and patient. Such an amazing teacher you are. Even a dummy like me don't feel nearly as intimidated as this whole process is. I actually now think I can do this, of course with your knowledge, experience and your inspiration. Thank you!

    I quite desperately wanted to learn how to sew but it's SO hard and there's way more to it than I ever imagined. I'm alone here actually starting to cry because I thought this was a way to afford to make things for my grandkids that live far away but now I'm unsure if it'll ever be a possibility. She's saying rip the material to make it true and I don't have a clue what that meant.. at.. all (I've never felt this useless).

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So sorry Cheryl, I feel really awful that I made you feel like this. Please do not feel useless, it is a journey and I have tried to cover as much information as possible in one video.
      I am talking about how to make sure that the edge of the fabric is on the true horizontal grain. When you buy fabric you buy it in X metres or X yards; this amount that you purchase is measured along the length grain, selvedge edge of the fabric. This is the lengthwise grain, and is what you use as a guide when you put your pattern onto the fabric; aligning the arrow with the selvedge.
      Then the person who you buy your fabric from cuts the fabric, this is the horizontal grain and because they have cut it, it might not be correct. You can make it square / correct by tearing some fabrics, or you can pull on a thread, or draw a square line from the selvedge.
      I talk about nap and other fabric things in this video: th-cam.com/video/gX5t1YN_Nu4/w-d-xo.html it might help make sense of it?

      Ps. Yes I know that I shouldn't have started with 4 way stretch and if you're a started too, please try non-stretchy materials first. I feel that I've lost some of the finer skills, but your videos have helped to encourage me and I've learnt something with each one video. I really like the way you mark your notches, I learnt to cut a triangle towards the outside of the pattern and have continued to do that - but your way is much more accurate and neat and I will keep it in mind next time I cut out a pattern.

    Thank you so much for saying the lengths in centimetres! Inches don't make much sense to me (I live in NZ so use metric) but everything in sewing seems to be in inches and yards, I find it quite frustrating especially using the fractions! It's much easier to say 1cm than 5/8ths of an inch. I've just brought my first sewing machine and I have found these tutorials VERY helpful, you've done a really great job. I'm going to start with a pillowcase then move onto a shirt from Colette patterns.

    I’m watching your videos to go back to basics, as I’ve noticed my sewing has gotten a bit lazy lately. I love how thoroughly you go through things and give various options. When I was taught to sew, I was taught to cut my triangle notches out instead of in (if that makes sense) so there was a little sticky outy triangle that I trimmed after. This made sure I didn’t accidentally snip too far in when I was a beginner.

      Hi Khayyam, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Bev's recommendation of Jaycotts is great, I often use them. I also recommend Sew Direct for reasonably priced patterns (www.sewdirect.com/) Here is the pattern I was using in the video, it was only as an example (jaycotts.co.uk/products/v8815#.V5RvopODGko). In this tutorial is used the Vogue 8815 (sewdirect.com/acatalog/Vogue-8815.html) but as an example, to show you how to follow the grain line and cut the fabric etc. You don't need to use this pattern, you can use any pattern as an example and follow what I did with the grain line etc. But if you would like to make this top you are welcome to use this pattern. Unfortunately I don't have a tutorial on how to make this top. Did you want to make the top? Or just follow the video for instructions on how to lay a pattern of your choice onto the fabric. I hope this helps? Any more questions let me know. Aneka :-))

    I last made for myself about 34 years ago when my first child was born. I'm watching your videos as revision but skills I was taught at school are coming back. However I remember being told to cut notches out of the seam allowance and to transfer darts etc using tailor tacks. Never used carbon paper. So this will be new thing for me.

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bev, lovely to hear from you. You can cut the notches out of the seam allowances, I also do this. I cut straight into the seam allowance, a very small snip (rather than a triangle, that can fray). However I try not to do this if I want to finish the seam allowances with the overlocker and don't plan to cut anything off (and the garment won't be lined), because then the snips can be seem through the overlocker. Hope this helps. Aneka

    Hello! I just wanted to say that you're my best teacher! Out of all the sewing channels, I find the most elaborate and comprehensive classes from you and you only. I love how you use example and sample fabrics of stitches and tensions. It really helps not-so-bright beginners like me. I'm going through your videos like a marathon and everything seems so easy to understand. You're always so generous and detailed with your teaching. Thank you so much! I have a question however, I was hoping, if you see this comment out of hundreds, if you could do a tutorial on starter tools for beginners. For example: the notcher, awl, tracing wheel and each of their functions, also if you could mention the height of the pattern cutting table. I'm so glad I found you. I can't thank you enough. And, YOU ARE SO PRETTY! I hope you see my comment. Have a lovely day!

Of course I can film a video on the tools you need, I will add it to the list. I am just a bit behind with my filming at the moment so please bear with me. I will measure my table tomorrow and let you know the height. Good luck with your sewing, Aneka :-))

    • @MadetoSew
      @MadetoSew  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Sanjida, I just remembered that I didn't measure the height of my tables for you. I tend to use them high for pattern cutting and standing work, they measure 91cm / 36" from the top of the table to the floor when they are high. I don't believe mine will go any higher than this. When they are lower for working on the sewing machine I tend to prefer a height of between 74cm 29" and 78cm 31". I hope this helps you. Aneka

      Same, Sissy and Aneka. New skills - or alternate ways of old skills - can always be learned (number of notches increasing toward the back of the garment, marking both sides of the fabric -- where have I been?). I'm picking up things here I apparently hadn't paid attention to in home economics or three decades of on-and-off sewing. :) Also, Aneka, you're lovely to listen to, and so clear in your teaching -- I really appreciate all the wonderful teaching you offer at no cost to us. I’m 63 years old and my mom and stepdad bought me a sewing machine 2 1/2 years ago very nice one I haven’t even opened it yet. I haven’t shown since I was a teenager 18 years old maybe a little bit in my beginning of 20s and I do not wanna ruin it so I have not unpacked it. My granddaughter is six years old and I’ve been wanting to make her summer dresses and different things for her roomand I have been looking for classes, but you don’t really find anything good out there and I’m sure as I watch this video. It’s definitely a different type of sewing. It’s funny I had. An old-time sewing machine when I was young so all this stuff is very much updated so I am ready to take one. It would be nice if I could go and take classes with her. I’m still a little leery of taking it out, I don’t wanna ruin anything. I wanna be respectful of the machine, so I’m gonna continue to watch your tutorials and I am so appreciative and so grateful and thankful for you to take the time out of your time and your day to teach people like us or even experience people that has tricks so I’m hoping you can teach an older MomMom new tricks
