Story 3: OP even gave the manager an out by asking "do you want me to stop?" The manager ignored the opportunity to get out of the malicious compliance, but instead doubled down, and in the end, tried to blame OP anyway. That manager deserved everything that happened to her that day.
i'm confused why were they making hamburgers before they took orders (in my country atleast frying and assembly part is done after customer orders the food)
@Zeeshan Ismail I think OP works at a fast food restaurant. I don't know much about fast food restaurant and how they function, but I think they make the food beforehand if it's the most ordered food. Like for instance, I go to Popeyes (fried chicken fast food restaurant) and get some chicken tenders and some fried shrimp. Usually I don't have to wait if I only order the tenders, since the tenders are often ordered and they probably made it beforehand. But if I order the tenders WITH the fried shrimp, they gonna tell me to pull up to the waiting parking area. Shrimps are not ordered often, so they don't make them beforehand, so they have to make them right then and there when I ordered them.

@@zeeshanismail7768 For a lot of fast food joints, people just say "I want a Number 1 with a Coke" and call good. When that number is a very popular one, you can get away with making some in advance so that you can get people their food and get them the fuck out of your pickup line for the next customer. Even for custom orders, a burger patty is usually a burger patty so as long as you don't let one sit there for an hour you can just use that and put someone's toppings on from there.
If you get slammed with 80 dudes at once, you want to run as much of a scam on your own time as possible so people don't start bitching about waiting for their food, therefore making a popular item in advance is usually a good idea. Of course, you gotta know your audience, as the bitchy manager found out the hard way.
Story 6 - Time for a visit to the HR office to ask them and the company lawyer about discrimination against the disabled.
Story 1 - LOL, I love OP’s using the boss’s words against him by wearing a kilt to work because it wasn’t a dress code violation. That was perfect.
I've also seen a story about shorts at work where the boss did not want to see men's hairy legs-cue MC - so all the guys including OP shaved their legs.

Story 6: OP should have taken a trip down to HR to ask them how OP was being ordered to complete a task that OP was physically unable to do?
It would be the same as the boss demanding a paralyzed person to get up from their wheelchair and walk upstairs...it can't be done.
As someone who worked years for a toxic Karen of a boss, who sadly is still getting away with it even after laying me off, I live for these.
Karma will get her in the end.

Story 3: they do recognize the good employees, but just won't acknowledge it out loud because that means they would have pay accordingly and they would much rather take advantage of them cheaply.
That could be tantamount to exploitation.

Story 6: I hope the boss got a talking-to by someone and actually learned to understand what a moron he was. Saying "I don't care if you're deaf, transscribe it anyway" is like saying "I don't care if you're blind, paint a portrait anyway". Rediculous. You may get a painting out of it, but it definitely won't be a portrait.
I may have "listened" to the whole recording and sent the boss a blank document - "there you go; I transcribed it exactly as I heard it."

These are some of the best malicious compliance stories I've heard. Especially the burger joint and the deaf person.
As amazing as burger joint is, I have mixed feelings when the result is so much wasted food.
Story 6: OP did actually better. My initial thought was he was going to hand in a blank paper and say "Sir I typed out whatever I could after listening to the audiotape at the highest volume"

Story 2: One is well rewarded for recognizing good employees for credit where credit is due. I got a supervisor position similarly when I started taking on tasks nobody else wanted to do, such as leading and scribing for meetings, developing a "planned PTO checklist" to help anyone minimize the impact of their absence, and revamping our badly organized training program. Thankfully my contributions were recognized and my manager actually got a new position created specifically for me so I was paid fair market rate for the job I did. I did have to learn a lot of new software for both hiring and timecards, but was essentially otherwise doing the same job. It was a large company and once my new role was announced, I received hundreds of "well deserved" messages from the employees who had previously worked with me.
Raise story: Hey Boss, don't give out advice that you don't actually want your employees to take.
6 turn 6 story: Fast food places live or die by their wastage. OP saw what was coming and made a very good estimate at what this group of people would order. NPM was only thinking about the special, not what people would actually want. At least the store corrected it's bad decision in passing over OP for promotion.
Do my work story: Yep, not a very smart boss. Give him instructions to do your work, then give him other instructions that essentially prohibit him from doing your work. And when YOU get investigated for failing to meet your goals they find out you've been embezzling as well. Would have like to hear more about the fall out from a legal perspective.
FOD story: Never screw with the IT guy. You'll only regret it.
Audio file story: Welp, I think that boss was only a boss due to the Peter Principal as well. Asking a DEAF person to transcribe an audio file. Good grief!
Playing Devil's Advocate with the Raise story, the boss may not have known the actual contents of said book. On the last story, power can make people ask the illogical, circumstances known or not.
Story 3: Sounds like NPM was just guessing on what the group was going to order. Never do that, you'll rarely get it right, if at all, and it'll be an embarrassing waste in the end

Yeah, but the thing is, OP guessed what the group was likely to order, and they were correct.
Yeah, I could see having OP do one set of burgers... but ordering an endless number of them before NPM had taken a single order for anything? AND doubling down when OP check in? Just stupidity and arrogance in action.
Yep, NPM did NOT take stock of the customers that were coming in. She only knew what the special was an thought EVERYBODY would order that.
To be fair so was OP but his guess made way more sense as he's litteraly the cook. He knows what's coming.
In actual restaurants there's a reason why kitchen and front managers are different.
Story 5: What an egomaniac, and he doesn't like being seen as "weak." Well, usually those who boast and s**t like that are fools (and sometimes cowards as well) and he basically made a fool of himself
If the VP had to make digital charts for everyone to point out he wasn’t their boss just because he constantly tried to intimidate people with “I’M YOUR BOSS!” despite having no control over them… yeah he made a fool of himself every damn day at that office lol
What I want to know is if this guy is such a known issue you have to give an organizational chart to everyone to keep him in line, why even keep him?

True about bosses not recognizing the good employees until it's too late. Can't tell you how many times I've told management that they needed to hire more people, when they kept piling more and more on me, to the point I was doing the work of 5 very diligent people. Every time I left, they had to hire 5 people to cover what I did alone. I shouldn't have suffered their idiocy as long as I did (thereby making myself one diligent idiot). Oh well, live and learn.
Story #5 - That's not how vacations work, pretty much anywhere, so FOD is looking for a breach of employment law suit.
My husband's an IT guy. He's mission critical for his company because, like OP, he's the only one who does his job. He has trained a coworker to handle part of it, but he's the only one with the entire job. So, we got invited to the beach in Florida for my World of Warcraft Guild's party week. We made all the arrangements to go but my husband tucked his work computer into my computer bag (because I don't go anywhere without it as an author AND gamer), just in case he gets "that call." We had a blast, between the drive from Houston to Melbourne Fl, (taking 2 days because of my disability) and then a week planned for the gathering and then two days travel back home. But halfway through the party week, he gets a call, something's broke and he needs to get online, if possible. He dutifully unpacks the computer, sets up in a bedroom, and goes to work while I hang out with the gang. He walked back out 3 hours later, the emergency handled and his shiny star still glowing. And it was appreciated at bonus time. We love where he works (major financial institution, can't say more) and they treat him right, which is awesome after doing IT at various companies since 1986. He's retirement age but working for a few more years to pay off our home. And, because of my disability he works at home 4 of 5 days a week, which is just fantastic. I write, he works, we're in the room together and it's just the best.

The last story... if there was any sort of fallout, I would be getting a lawyer involved for discrimination.
Story 5 - Well, they should have made certain everything was forwarded to the FOD's mobile phone when he went on vacation, because he is salaried after all. I think managers like that forget that there are holiday clauses within contracts when you are salaried.
Story 6 - Would have loved to see that boss fire OP for that, the litigation case within the courts would have been labeled as a teaching case for discrimination law and labeled "Why you dont ask a deaf person to transcribe audio recordings." and it would have also completely destroyed not just that boss, but their company.
Story #2 was my situation, and yes, the boss was furious about my leaving. Whenever someone left the job, it was given to me. I was running 5 different departments alone. The boss did not hire or train anyone to help me - and then I was offered a better job and quit. He had to hire 4 more people to replace me and none of them were qualified. Whatever.
Vacation Story: OP should have gone to the VP that approved the Vacation and asked him to step on the Operations Director because he demanded OP take his laptop and phone and be On-Call while on Vacation in Violation of State Labor Law...

Using company money to take your dates out to expensive fancy restaurants and building yourself a deck at home not only gets you fired it gives you a one way ticket to prison too. I know from experience from knowing idiots who embezzled money from where they worked at
I absolutely used to wear kilts when my office allowed skirts during the summer but guys couldn't wear shorts. Just got funny looks (but my kilts are canvas with pockets and stuff) because I work in IT and everyone just assumes we're weirdos. And they're right. lol.
It's in your job description!. I was expected to be dressed like a businessman, when I worked as a TV Broadcast Engineer. This, in spite of having to crawl under equipment to run cables, or do things like go up a 60 foot ladder to change air filters at the transmitter site once a month. hen doing this work in the US Army, I had to be in a nice clean set of fatigues at all times. On a few occasions, I had to have a M16 strapped over my shoulder when the base was on alert.
@michaelterrell Business attire for women can include short skirts. Men can't wear shorts... but very few businesses are gonna risk the sexual discrimination lawsuit if I decide to wear a kilt. I still wore a button down shirt and a tie. I was hoping I'd get written up so I could retire...

I went to the VA to be measured when they needed replacement. Instead of a Med Tech, I was sent to a Physical Trainer who insisted on giving me absolutely useless replacements. They were so big that the thigh bands fell below my knees with my first steps..
When I went back, I brought his supervisor's name and extension number. I had lost most of my thigh muscles, so I required the regular style, not the extra large ones made just for men. He was screaming, "No self respecting man would wear the others, they are made for women!" I grinned, "They are my legs, and I'm Diabetic. It's highly unlikely that I would survive a double amputation, so shove your stupid crap! He turned bright red, so I added, "If six inch high heels would help, I would wear them, in hot pink, just to make fools like you mad!"
He ordered the proper size, and I never had to deal with that idiot, again!

Story 6 - What a complete moron that boss was. Asking OP to transcribe an audio recording when OP is ‘deaf’. OP get’s major kudos for the Google Transcription. I hope that OP didn’t get into too much trouble.

Story 5... I hate managers like that... they powertrip and don't actually know what those under them do, so cannot actually manage them, and don't know how much work they do. I agree with DarkFluff... not having a backfill is an issue, and should get the manager fired.

I just got my first kilt a few weeks ago(I was at a Ren Faire, and wanted to fix that I didn't have a SINGLE piece of paraphernalia to honor my Scottish heritage), and I was NOT expecting to love it this much. Kilts are fuckin great!
Same here. Got my first one when I moved down south after realizing how hot it got during the summer and then I bought a few more. sadly, still gotta wear pants to work but they at least allow shorts.

Story 2: it's takes a special brand of hubris to tell your employee you rely on the most to "seek a better job"
The boss in the last story is almost certainly in violation of disability discrimination law in whatever country this happened in. If OP chose to report him to HR he would be in deep deep trouble, and rightly so.
I had a boss that told me that when he enters the office he wants to see me doing at least two jobs at once, if not three. I finally flipped my lid when he yelled at me over something he knew nothing about.
Story 5: I love the outcome that FOD actually has to learn the stuff he needs to know when the IT person is on vacation.
Just wanted to say I appreciate you and your channel so much. I am alone for more than 10 hours a day and struggle a lot with being alone, anxiety etc. I listen to this channel the entire time even repeated ones I've already heard. I had a boss that had me do work I was not hired to do and thought just above minimum wage was enough for me. I just decided I was done with that job and sent in my resignation via email. The place shut down cause I was the only one at that location doing the work. 😅
Stories 3 and 4: Karma for both, never underestimate your workers.
Story 1: Bus drivers in our area was using skirts since it against policy to wear shorts in the summer. When it was noticed in the news it took a month to change, and now the policy is changed.

I have bad hearing. When I was unemployed I only got money when I did jobs my insurance thing gave me. They gave a phone job -_- I said, I don't hear so well, and on the phone I hear practicly nothing. Nope...I need to do that job or else I would loose my money. I did, the company I was send to was not so happy with me. I really don't understand some people.

Story 1 : After he was done after his 10 minute ragefest at OP's kilt, if he was done and i was op i would have said = I will report you for : Harrasment, discrimination and wrongfull termination. Try me.

Why would you assign a hearing task regarding audible translation to a deaf person since you know the nature of their disability.

Story 2: Never kill the golden goose should have been a lesson in business school and it's amazing how just one person quitting can collapse the business.
Story 4: Talk about shooting yourself in the foot and losing everything as the company will go scorch earth on the former boss for stealing their money for all the stupid abuse he done.
Any manager worth their salt can recognise the keystone that supports the arch they built and pay them accordingly.
third one: not the smartest manager, but atleast she was helping when the rush happend. unlike managers from some other fastfood storys. (like the one with the shake throwen into a car)
I saw a video on TH-cam about a Danish royal wedding. The bride was of Scottish heritage, and her father wore a kilt as he escorted her down the aisle.

When i was working as a foreman gardener in the 1970s/80s my employer started altering our working conditions and cutting corners. I wasn't happy about this and voiced my opinions. They countered with, "Well, if you don't like it, you can always leave!" So my next weeks holiday, i went for several interviews and got a response from the third one. So i gave my notice gardening and left and went to work for the national railways (UK) for the next 30 years. Quadrupled my wages, paid off my mortgage early and met my wife.

story 5: A lot of times an easy going senior bosses (the VP) either hire or are forced to hire more aggressive under bosses because they cancel out each others weaknesses. This does not work very well the other way around though as the aggressive boss would just constantly override and micromanage their underboss.
A boss should be fired for asking a deaf employee to transcribe an audio recording. It's not only stupid, it's discriminatory and ableist, possibly harassment. The employee should have complained to HR.
They should have gone straight to a lawyer, HR only wants to cover the company

Story 5: Man, I‘d hate to live and especially work in the US simply for the insane work schedules. No vacation for 2 years? No sick leave and other stuff (not in this story, but in many others)? Facing bankruptcy for doctor and hospital bills? That‘s just insane and, frankly, inhumane. I think I‘ll stay put in good ol‘ Germany and enjoy (specifics of my company) fixed 38-hour week, 30 days of paid vacation and (by law) paid sick leave for up to 6 consecutive weeks if necessary. In fact, I just had to take two days off for some issues I won‘t get into detail here. All it took was to call in (well, I opted to get a doctor‘s note, even though it‘s not required for up to 3 days in my company, but better safe than sorry, and thanks to universal healthcare and insurance, I don‘t pay extra). I don‘t even have to send the note in myself since a new law as of January 2023 - I just tell him when I call in that I have a note, and the employer can get the relevant data (which, due to data protection laws, are basically „X is sick and from a medical perspective unable to work. They will be in this state until the estimated date of . Signed, “) from the insurance who get the information digitally from the doctor. Ah… laws that are designed to protect the weaker party… I pity you.

Story 3. I went through something similar. I spent a lot of my restaurant career as a cook. Working at fast food, I judged what had come in. The manager yelled at me for "Over-cooking" the food. We ran through all I cooked with in the time. She still bitched at me. I left soon after.
