      Don't get me wrong: ignorance isn't an excuse. But that story is generally how those situations go. Most people aren't assholes. In fact, very few are. But the assholes are the ones that's typically written about so they _seem_ more common.

    The fact that the boss in the second story retaliated and got OP fired afterwards just cements the fact that some people just don't belong in positions of power.

      5 employees are late by 2 minutes every day, 5 days a week , 52 weeks a year. That equals 520 minutes of pay lost by the company that year. If your shift starts at 6, that is *not* the time to arrive. That is the time to *start* working.
      Willfully being late to take advantage of a disciplinary action that should be a deterrent, should require further disciplinary action.
      If you left your tape measure in the car, leave it there and report on time. Why must the company you work for, pay for your mistakes?

      Docking someone because they had to get something they left in the car and expecting them to still work off the clock is wage theft.
      Telling them if they are late they lose 15 minutes anyway means that they will use it any time they are running late. This is not a perfect world. There are so many factors that can prevent someone from being on time. Therefore if they know they will be late and be docked of course they will say "well I am losing that time anyway."
      You are right that showing up at the exact start time is not when you should arrive. However this world has problems and sometimes that causes people to fall behind *out of their control* . I worked at a gas station that if you were late by so much time you would stay late that amount of time to make up for it. It is very likely that they never finished their shift in Story 2 perfectly every time either. There are so many other options that could have been better than just straight up docking time. You are the type of person to ask someone to clean something for you and then micromanage everything they are doing. Probably spout stupid nonsense like "That's not right you are doing it wrong" or "That's not how I do it!" instead of teaching the correct way. Used to work for people like you. Narrow minded, power tripping, never wrong individuals.
      Next time you want to open your mouth keep it shut.

    Story 2: You're only allowed to dock the time the person as late. Otherwise, it's wage theft.

      That's true. The employee also doesn't have to start work until they are paid. 2 minutes late gets docked 15 minutes? The start time is now 15 minutes later. It's illegal to not pay an employee for working.

      And if there’s anything governments _love_ to crack down on, it’s wage theft. It’s usually a surface-level problem that has more illegal financial dealings underneath like tax avoidance. They will audit every nook and cranny if they catch you doing wage theft.

      Another not so fun fact, wage theft accounts for the largest type of theft in the US, and steals 3 times more money than all the other forms of theft combined. So it's not "allowed" but it's not really punished either, except in rare and super obvious cases. Even though I personally don't steal, this is why I am 100% on the side of people who steal from big corporations. You could steal the most expensive unnecessary thing from Walmart for no reason other than you wanted it, and you'd be up there with the likes of Robinhood in my book.

    I just love when employers threaten to fire the employee that is literally keeping their businesses afloat, only for the employee to accept being fired and ultimately kills the company simply by leaving.

      Barbershops can be like this too. My longtime local barbershop was run by a guy styling himself as a "Master Barber". I attended VoTech school for IT with his son. One of his girls (he hired only lady barbers) became my regular barber. My head has a certain "oddity" making getting a haircut the way I like difficult. She learned my head and did very well. After twenty years, she passed from cancer. The owner seemed to go downhill, became demanding and argumentive. Most of the ladies had left. It was just him and one other barber. He blew up at me one day, and I never went back. Passing by a few weeks later his shop was closed. I found a good barber across town from my home, but it was worth the drive.

      This is why my friend left the profession..but so did my piercer friend also.. she worked in italy,also,and she told me that there was the same behavior.. maybe it's with all kind of work.. my husband who's a construction worker, said that a bit the same is there too..

    Story 3: Ain't nothing better than seeing some business brat who doesn't understand the first thing about running a business but has the indulgent parents to fund his bad ideas getting a reality check. Might be projecting a bit, but I can't see any other situation that could cause an owner that stupid.

      Thing is this, OP sent an email to Corporate that they were quitting, yet were dealing with the owner. Why send a letter to corporate if they dont need to know about you quitting a job if hired under the owner. If that guy is the owner of the company, then who was HR if there is a Payroll.
      And honestly, not paying for two weeks, you dont need to put a letter of resignation in, that is effectively them telling you your fired. By not rostering you for two weeks like that and telling you its unpaid time for you to think about your job, without any warnings and such means you dont need write that letter.

      @@Ryanthusar the part about the two weeks leave without pay kind of depends on the company, and maybe the country. Here in Canada, there’s three choices for pay. One, contract work. This means that the company doesn’t take any money off of your pay for taxes or any other deductions. You get paid your full wages with no deductions. The benefit of this is there’s no guesswork on how much you’re owed. The downside is that you have to pay your taxes all at once every February. Option Two is to be paid with deductions, 4% of which are set aside for your annual vacation pay. After 12 months, 4% of every paycheque adds up to about one full pay period (or one paycheque) worth. Thus allowing for you to take 2 weeks off every year without having to worry about missing out on any bills or anything. And then Option Three is pretty much the same as Option Two, except that the 4% vacation pay is ADDED onto every paycheque. In the short term this is beneficial for, much like the contract work, you get paid more per paycheque. The drawback is that if you take 2 weeks off from work, you don’t get paid for 2 weeks. That could be a months rent, or a months bills, or a couple weeks of groceries that you’re going to have to go without. That can be mighty tough.
      I’ve worked all three types of jobs. I prefer the paid time off. But it requires more work for payroll to do it, which in turn costs the owners more money, so a lot of companies go with either a 4% boost in pay or not dealing with deductions at all. The less payroll has to do, the less the owners have to pay them, and the more money they can save.

    Story 4 truly ended nicely. Sometimes bosses are good, and just a bit disconnected from reality. That dose of reality, then he apologized to his staff, then make things better to the point that OP actually returned year after year to help him, that's quite wholesome in a way.

    I worked for a cafe briefly in 1993, and had an amazing boss/owner. She woke up at stupid-early hours to bake the pies for the day, and they were mostly what kept people coming back. The pies, and her roast beef. Everything else could be found elsewhere just the exact same, but not the pies or roast beef. She inspired me to keep learning new ways of cooking and new recipes, even if I never made them myself. Thank you, Cookie!

    Story 3: The owner broke labor laws the moment he told OP he "wouldn't pay more overtime" for OP coming in to cover missed shifts. I'm surprised it took "years" for the place to close after that.

      no, by "wouldn't pay more overtime" they meant he couldnt actually WORK the overtime, its made clear when he is ordered to "make it work" by having other people do the work. an employer can decide not to allow workers to WORK the overtime, its only when they are denied pay for the time they do work its a crime

    About 10 years ago, I was working heavy equipment on a site that had a few rig welders. Now, understand, rig welders make a LOT of money. One particular rig welder would clock out a few minutes early pretty consistently. The company told him they would dock his pay if he kept it up, so just for fun, he kept clocking out 1 or 2 or 5 minutes early and, true to their word, the company would dock him just the time he clocked out early. This didn't really affect his pay, but we all got a laugh out of how much extra the company was paying payroll to calculate these minutes. One of the guys had a friend in payroll and he told us they were paying the payroll dept more for the time it took to recalculate his pay than they were docking him. Go figure.

    Years ago, when I worked retail, the store owner tried helping out in the cowboy boot department when it was busy. He has a booming voice and doesn’t ever speak in an indoor voice. The managers had several customers complaining about him.

    A company is like an enormous clock, it works best when ALL the cogs mesh together and work together. If everybody works then everything goes smoothly. That includes the Managers and Owners, just because you have a higher title does NOT exempt you from working. I think most bosses would benefit from scrubbing the toilet every once in a while, or washing a few dishes or cooking a few meals.

    Story 4 is why I have always said that ALL owners and managers should be required by law to, at the very least, shadow every position they hire to make them personally aware of the needs of each position and better appreciate what their employees endure. So many have no clue.

    Story 3 reminded me when i was hired on as a line cook at this Brand new Pub that opened up near my house. I was the first one there besides the owner and the first thing i got to work on was Sorting out the inventory and getting the Pub ready for the Grand opening the next day. i had some Culinary background as i have been to school for my First year of Culinary and had a couple years under my belt. So immediately the next day i started taking the reins and started leading the kitchen. Things ran pretty smoothly and i even helped with the ordering which was new territory for me. After about a week the Owner promoted someone else to Kitchen manager he was a young 17 year old with barely any knowledge under his belt and things immediately started heading south. The kitchen started to become dysfunctional and we were even having to 86 menu Items because we ended up running out of stock including Popular things like Dry ribs and Onion rings one time we even ran out of fries and had to run to the near by super market and grab bags of fries to get us by the Service. Not only that I have not been paid in a month and i asked around if anyone else has been paid and they said no. So i kicked the Hornets nest and filed a complaint with the Labour board. They must of gotten a call because a few days later they pulled me aside and asked me what i was owed and i was smart enough to keep my time slips and the Owner was stunned that a 18 year old was smart enough to keep his time slips After that diabolical he made it so no one could punch out without the mangers code and he took the time slip that was printed out and threw it out. a week later they pulled me aside and showed me the hours tallied up and how much i was owed they gave me $2000 through an E transfer and told me that they will call me if i was needed i basically said There is no need to call me as i don't work for a ship with no functioning engine (aka the Kitchen),that won't pay me on time and is sinking like the Titanic. and quit on the spot. Two years later they closed there doors for good.

    Story 2 -- WHY do workers think that it's OK to CONSISTENTLY show up late? I can understand if it happens very rarely, due to an unforeseen traffic jam or something, but why do they keep showing up late, then complain when they lose pay over it? They want to be paid fully for not working, but they complain when the company docks their pay... for not working! Rule #1 for having a job - Show up on time!! duh!

      Depends on the situation. I'm always early because I rely on public transit and don't trust it to not be on time. My coworker is also 3-5 mins late because she needs to drop kisses at daycare and then et to work

    My Mom was the best bartender at the bar. When the owner finally said something rude to her. She quit and the bar went from being a sports bar, then lesbian bar, and finally closed.🙄

    The first story is pretty much what happened to my husband. We moved from the city to a beach town many years ago. My husband got a job pretty quickly. He's a chef by trade and a damn fine one at that. He was making the owners more than a million dollars a year. A few years after starting work there the owners wife got cancer and as we were friends we were there to help support them both. One day out of the blue my husband hears a rumour that the restaurant had been sold. He asks the owner what the hell? The owner said yyyeeeaaahhh, anyway see ya. They left town the next day. We found out that they had sold it to a couple of ladies who knew nothing about running a restaurant. The crazy part is though that my husband was part of the sale! We were never meant to find out about the sale until the new owners took over because everyone in town knew how good my husband was at cooking and running the whole restaurant. My husband is a good man and decided to stay on for a short time to try and teach them the ropes. But after they burnt the kitchen down twice due to one of them leaving the stove on, we finally said enough. They sold it not long after my husband quit. 🤷

    My first job while in HS was with a real shrew boss who loved to bully us, while her bar floozy friends worked there too and they stoled our tips. This was a restaurant in a mall so many shop keeper owners and managers were our customers. After a year of BS abuse, a co worker and I quit after we saw the schedule with no weekends off after working every weekend after a year. The shop keepers and managers, customers alike boycotted the restaurant and after 6 months, the restaurant was closed forever. It’s amazing how stupid selfish people destroy themselves.

    Guess the second story is a win-win/lose-lose situation. OP decided to screw around with asshole boss’s power trip, gets a good revenge on him. Asshole boss was able to fire OP. Basically maliciouscompliance on both ends of the butts.

The dishwasher story immediately triggered a memory of him at his office machine business this was years ago when you couldn't do things like we do today. He said when your in charge, 1. Don't ask your employees to do anything you wouldn't do yourself. I.E. you ask for them to clean the bathroom, then occasionally you clean the bathroom. He said lead by example and know what your talking about and your employees will respond in kind.
    He also always said bosses will always yell or discipline an employee when they screw up! Just never do it in front of other employees. But what most bosses forget is that if your going to give them crap, don't forget to also give them praise! It is amazing that I've never had a manager do that in my life, dad you ruined me because I strive to be but i have never met a boss who acted like that and I've disliked them all but I remember you had many long-term and very loyal employees over the years all do to these standards of decency. The boss in that story got a taste of the consequences of not knowing what the job required. At least he was smart enough to learn his lesson and remedy that. I bet he went and learned every position in the place.

    Story 4, I was table busser at a local restaurant that everyone in town loves. I worked there for almost two years til I had to transfer to finish my degree. I loved my boss and coworkers. I still go back and sub in when they need. The regulars are always happy to see me and ask how I'm doing plus give me a tip. When it was my last day my boss and coworkers about started crying and gave me money plus gifts. I was always told that I was the best table busser they ever had.
    Story 5, why am I not surprised that Karen ran to hide in her house like the coward she is.

    I worked at a company that had a similar problem with timeliness of employees. But they took a different approach. Everybody who arrived on time, got a gift certificate to Starbucks. And the people who showed up late did not. Positive reinforcement!

    I had a boss one time that made us work for free or so he said. He wasn’t a prick about it or anything like that. We were laying water line and it had several several leaks. Was the first time we had put any of that pipe in and we did a terrible job and his words were I pay you once to do a job if use mess it up you gotta fix it on your on time which in turn made us way more careful while doing it. Then on payday we got our full check but we all thought we were gonna be a day short. He has been the very best boss I’ve ever had.

    Story 2: OP's boss's boss was exactly correct...the boss was not a good leader and it showed. The way OP & coworkers handled the situation was perfect. Way to go guys!
    Story 4: OP was very fortunate that the owner actually stepped in and helped...most would never do that. The fact that he actually asked OP how to do the job was a found unicorn :)
    Story 5: Gotta love it when the Karen does the most idiotic thing and demands you to record them fucking up and to call the police on them. Morons!

    The construction guy could have sued for retaliation. Retaliation is when you reported bad behavior and you suffered the consequences for reporting bad behavior. It is illegal in the United States.

    Sadly most restaurants have the problem of owners and general managers have never worked in the bock of house at any place. They don't understand the physical demands and the time restraints to make food or clean dishes in such large amounts along with keeping the areas clean.

    I am a union electrician, my first job in the trade started at 8 am. They were coming in at 6 without permission from the local. I would come in at 7:30 and wait at the gamgbox until 8. 1st year apprentices are under probation so breaking any conditions could get you kicked out. After a few days of me not complying with the General Foreman, who started early just to avoid traffic going home, the company got busted for starting early. I lasted for about 5 more months.

    Everytime i listen to Karen stories, i get a bit of trauma flashbacks, as my mom was one.. it was especially nasty,when started dating my now husband..she hated him, as he was straight forward and never could pretend to like her behavior.. now i'm just better off, without any involvment with my side of the family..

    Barbershop story: What I don't understand is why the owner didn't offer to sell the shop to OP. OP had a vested interest in keeping the shop open and profitable and likely could have gotten a business loan with which to pay off the owner. Oh well, we all know the story about gooses and golden eggs.

    I had a dickhead boss who pissed me off, and when I told him I was leaving he said go ahead, I did.
    2 weeks later I got a call begging me to come back,I met with him, snd made my demands, I got them in writing and his secretary a Notary notarized it.
    Demands were weekend off 2 dollars an hour raise, first offer of overtime, and paid one hour break for lunch and 2 15 minute coffee breaks, plus free food, it was a fast food place, had a great workplace after that stuff got done, and food quality stayed strong
    When I got another job my dream job he begged me to stay,but I was ready to go.
    If I had the urge I'd call on Saturday and offer to work weekends, which he readily agreed to

    After my brother quit his job his boss immediately blew up his phone, called my place of work to get my phone number so she could harass me to harass him, and when that didn't work she just straight up came to our house.
    All of this after over a year of her treating him like crap, even though he was 1. Older than her, 2. Had more managerial experience than her, and 3. Worked with the company longer than her. This same woman also treated people so badly more than 20 people quit within her first couple of months.
    The best part is my brother was her best worker, so the place has probably gone even more downhill snce he left.
    Fuck McDonald's.

    A forced two week unpaid time off is effectively considered a constructive dismissal by law. Most states in the US consider you to effectively be laid off/fired for such an extended forced unpaid time off schedule.

    Story 2.
    An earlier job had a policy that simply said we get paid every 3min. If we were 4min late we lost 6min of pay.
    We could decide to wait 2min if we wanted to, but usually that wasn't an issue.
    For me, after talking to the boss about my Irl situation I got an exception. I could come 15 min late with no salary withdraw, but if I was 16 min late I would loose 18 min. Fair deal in my eyes. And I usually came 12min late.
    I do think it is stupid to have 15min lost for 1min late.

    1st story almost makes me feel bad. Worked for a Construction Company for 9 years. Started working there at 17, was a competent worker, good at my job, and was a Foreman by 20. Even after 9 years, my pay was absolutely horrible. So I left. 3 long time Foremans left within 3 months after me. Within 6 months after I had left, that Company had to shut down. 9 years I worked my butt off helping to grow that Company. Sad...

    Best manager I ever had would go out and do the work of regular employees to help us catch up. Worst manager I ever had would hide in his office with the door closed watching youtube then complain orders weren't done correctly(we only deliver what they give us... wrong orders were THEIR fault).

    For construction that is fairly normal to be expected to start working right at whatever time you start getting paid, which means getting there a bit early to make sure you are set up. HOWEVER, at the end of the day, it is the expectation that we hit the time clock exactly at quitting time, which means work stopped 20 minutes or so before that time. Basically walk in on my time, walk out on company time. So it evens out.

    At my job they don’t dock your pay…if you clock in 1 minute late three times in a certain time span it’s counted as an unexcused absence. Three unexcused absences is a fireable offense.

    Still reminds of me when I quit a handyman job because the person who hired me miss 3 payments but before the 3rd miss payment they said that I was getting pay the next day where was a no show that which I messaged the person that I was quiting because I have a three strike rule and I'm fuckin out of there.
    Being paid $20 for a week of work is one thing but not getting pay 3 times is sad where I make $40+ moving someone stuff to their home which was a 3 hour job.

    When I was in college I worked at a donut shop. I went in an hour early to start the fryers, weigh the flours, mix the toppings / frostings, fill the glazing, line the trays with new parchment paper, mix & proof the yeast dough, prep the filling and empty the front counter of day old donuts. Then I fried donuts and fry cakes, glazed or topped filled them. Then filled the van and drove to deliver to a hospital, two GM plants & 2 other donut locations. I was fired for no reason, so I was fine with that and just collected unemployment. I was contacted by my ex-boss begging for me to come back because they could not manage without me. He had no-one to drive or come in early to do all of the prep I had had to do. I asked him how is this my problem? I simply explained if I were to come back I would need to be paid three times my previous wage as I was doing the work of three people. The building that was once a thriving donut shop due to my efforts is now a Taekwondo - Do Jo.

    Story 4:
    You have no idea how busy it can be. And I mean that literally.
    I work in a relatively small fast food store. I will keep it vague since I still work there, but here is the gist of it. We are relatively well known in our corner of town. We aren't the next McDonalds or the next 5 star restaurant, but we are well known for good food. Ideally we have 2, on good days 3 people in the store, to help work through all the backlog. In most cases tho, we have 1. And that one person suffers greatly. No time to put stuff into the dishwasher, no time to clean stuff, we run basically from order to order hoping to god that we have enough dishes to make sure we can finish the next order.
    Our boss is a lot more competent than the one in the story, but still, sometimes it feels like they have no idea what they are doing. Stuff isn't cleaned, orders are done on the last second, there is such a mess, if our main employees arent present, the store goes down in a heap of bullshit. Literally. We have days where we need 3 hours to clean up if our main employees arent there, whereas normally we need less than 2.

    Story 2: sometimes people forget the even the loely construction workers have contract, and they can either screw or secure your job and money, and either before of after you're hired you should always read your contact because you could find something to prevent your boss from screwing you over

    Construction or not. You should be at work 15 min early. ( if on wage) That way you can do all your personal morning crap before clocking in. Like get you coffee use the restroom catch up with co workers. Being late often shows you have poor work ethic.
    You are always replaceable. Employers want people who want to be there. They don't pay you to be a drag on the business

    If I were the OP in the first story, I'd have said "As you have requested that the shop run without any further input from me, I will clean out my things and leave effective your firing me. After all, a boss cannot run a business without employees having input into bringing in and processing business, and you have specifically requested that I not do so, so I can only interpret that as you firing me from my position. Please do not contact me further unless it is through my lawyer, as firing me for working definitely falls under the bounds of wrongful termination." and then just ghost her. Actually getting a lawyer for wrongful termination would probably be a wild goose chase since she hasn't *actually* fired you, that's just the most literal interpretation of her demands, but even just mentioning wrongful termination should have an interesting result(notice I didn't actually mention suing her, just planted the idea of it 😉)
