It’s always been sexy to me. However, the culture regards sexy as desirable but generally giving it a specific time and place where it’s given level of appropriateness depending on when, where and who is gazing.
35:42 I sooo miss MHP’s show on MSNBC. I lived for those conversations on Sunday mornings. It sparked a lot of thoughtful discussions among my friends and I. In addition to who I married, I realized that I have cultivated a group of friends, men and women, who are all feminists and with whom I can be fully my nerdy, authentic self. So much so that I sometimes forget when I’m outside my core group until someone tries to “humble” me, usually a man.
43:02 As a child I was precocious and curious. Always asking why or sharing something I’d learned. I also remember adults - even some teachers-telling me that kids should be “seen & not heard”. Hearing Margo describe her daughter, I was brought me back to that time. Not understanding why anyone wouldn’t want me to be smart. Such a confusing time. 😅
Im 31. I have never and will never play dumb for a man to like me. I don't want a partner that I can't be myself around. I can be an engineer, like fashion and anime and gardening and learning. As soon as I say my job title, guys get upset but that makes it easier to know who isnt a viable partner
Wow, this is such a great conversation. In many ways, I was offended by the very idea that sexy and smart are mutually exclusive. We appear to have come to a place where the whole of who we are as women is too much to quantify, so we must separate the pieces to be accepted, and that idea makes me livid.
I've been waiting 😊 I think lots of people think of the major issues in this election as pertaining to, and potentially applying to " those people" meaning anyone other than themselves and I have been saing that since I had to explain it to my 5th grader in 2016. I also believe this election is a stark reminder of what historically has always been true of this country what was so disheartening is that it is 2024 . Even if only for the next generation the optimist ( that once existed ) in me wanted to believe we'd moved forward the pessimist knew better. That said in the same vien as the discussions about smart v. Sexy , as with all of life the duality has and will always exist. As women we have to make the choice to BE ( appreciating and honoring) all that we are "image" be damned in order to survive the noise( that saidni checked out of dating a decade ago) because at the end of the day the way people see you bears little importance. The U.S. likes to be SEEN in a certain light the reality matters much less. This country is builton principles it will not let die and it would seem so are relationships.
Im perplexed as to why you don't have millions of views. This podcast needs to be a weekly TV show. This discourse is needed on a national platform. Thank you, #politicsandfashion for putting me on to the smartest conversations currently happening. ❤😂
Can you guys start discussion groups in multiple cities and college campuses? I can’t benefit from them because I’m not in the US any more, but I find community in my Rotary Club and have since my early thirties. I do recall being in college and being teased because I “use big words” and I thought “if not in College, then when?” I do try to tailor my writing (emails mostly) to the audience now, but it still pains me to use five words when one will do.
Another "HOMERUN" - Good Job! Would you be open to discuss the dismantling of the public education and education/knowledge "period" on women and people of color?
It feels good to hear that. I feel isolated but at least I'm never bored with myself. From a french perspective, it's very difficult to have deep conversations with my peers. Beauty, seduction & compétition are expected from women where I'm from (french caribbean).
Let’s NORMALIZE SMART- please keep this convo going❤❤❤❤❤
YES!
