TTFS: Kenobi's Ned-B Diorama

  • In today's episode, I make my first-ever diorama! I was inspired by watching ‪@gameyybuilds‬ and ‪@Boylei‬ and decided to give scratch-building and kit-bashing a diorama a try! I recreate the droid repair shop where Ned-B smuggled force-sensitive people off the planet. It took MUCH longer than I thought it would! I tried to make it as scene accurate as possible.
This video is a "53 Cent Production". Written, filmed, and edited by Shawn Cash, produced by Heather Atherton and Shawn Cash.

Shawn, I love and respect your ‘creative Tourette’s’. Obsession to detail is my jam. I always add small details that will never be seen. And only I will ever know they’re there. But, they add so much to the story. Your skills with paint and weathering still amaze me. Nice to see you scale those skills down to this small scale and keep the level of realism. The diorama still looks cleaner and more organized than my apartment, at the moment.
As for length of the video…I didn’t think it was overly long. But, I’ve been watching a lot of 3-4 hour live streams. Any shorter and you lose out on showing your skills. If you were to do multi-part series, I would suggest you focus in on different parts of the build. Like a slower, more detailed, look at painting/weathering/distressing different parts. Or, close up shots of you wiring up the lights. Basically, more in depth looks at some of the insane amount of details in this build. Either way, I’m going to watch. Then I’m going to come back and watch again, when I want to try to figure out your paint technique (and subsequently fail to reproduce it). Well, before this comment gets overly long…

Thank you so much for the kinds words and thoughts! I think if I do another (and yes I have one in mind) I may make a very detailed piece of it that will be a lot of kit-bashing and then come back and add that to the diorama in a second build.

This video length was fine for me, as I had time, and found it quite relaxing to watch. I realize it took way more time for you! So thanks. It oddly seems to help me not just be inspired towards diorama-making, but also towards tidying my own attic workspace/storage (mostly storage of, er, cluttered junk parts & salvaged materials, truth be told!).. oh, and tools.. nice selection of miniature scale tools you have there in your diorama, btw!
    Thanks all round.
    Cheers, I enjoyed this!

Mr Cash, your obsession inspires me… it also haunts me! I’ve been sanding some Wester 35 blasters for my display, I’d spent a day going from 120 up to 3000 wet sanding to get it smooth. I was pleased, a light dusting of filler primer and I was happy to move on. Or so I thought… all I could hear that night was you in my head “Steve, are you really leaving it like that?” I’ve now spent another entire day doing it all again from scratch and they are like glass 👌🏼 I’ve now paused until I’m confident I’m done sanding 😂
As for your build sir.. WOW! What an incredible diorama, the detail is what sells it, it’s outstanding yet again. Genuinely, I’ve said it every video but you blow me away and surprise me every time 👏🏼
As for the video length, I liked it on this occasion and don’t see any harm running it this long when it warrants it. Had you broken this one up I think it would of lost some of its impact and appeal but I think this nailed it. Other videos or projects work being broken up in to 2+ and you’ve done that before. A mix is good.
As always, wishing you all the best from me and mine to you and yours good sir.

    • @trytofinishsomething
      @trytofinishsomething  ปีที่แล้ว

Steve you make me laugh every time! I hear my own voice saying things like that to me all the time! Even in this video the legs that David White sent are a low poly model and I thought about sanding all of the angles down until it was perfect. I was about 4 weeks into the build and knew I still had to edit it down from 7 hours of footage. In the end, I left it and in every picture I kept hearing “I can’t believe you left it like that!!!”

I’m late to the video, but man what a ride! It is long, but totally worth it because of the amount of detail that is in it! When I see that much detail I learn and gain what Johnny #5 from the movie Short Circuit said, “Input!”
Oh, and I lick my brushes when I paint too. Bad habit I picked up from doing miniatures lol!

Shawn, this is such an epic build. Definitely, a Gammy Builds and Boy Lei Hobby quality level,..maybe even better. Add a Gammy Build story universe and you are 1 month away from a million subscribers. I know I wasn't a big fan of the wood floor from the pic you sent me, but seeing it in the video now, it looks great. The video captured it much better. I think this is one of your greatest builds. Fantastic Build.
    Highlights that I really liked:
    - The scomplink from styrene was super cool
    - Loved loved the texture on the floor and walls.
    - so many things to look at...and each item was created with such detail and care
    - the weathering and lights on Ned are wicked cool
Side Note: It was cool to see 4 ways to weather panel that Future Shawn will build,..or maybe that was past Shawn since that episode already came out....lol
As for the video length, I agree it will most likely cause less views, but I think when people cut them into part 2, part 3 kinds of videos...that even though they are flashier and short...less of HOW they did it is dropped...which is the whole reason I clicked on the video to start with. I vote to keep as is...I want my shawn bob ross video. If I am short on time, I go back to finish the video when I have time.
    glam shots are AMAZING!!!

Thank you so much Garland! My head is swimming with tangents now and other dioramas that will give me more freedom to be more creative. I had a lot of fun doing the build, but I would have liked to show a little more of the “how I got there and did it”, but the video was going on forever. I had almost an hour of footage on building that barrel alone. I just had a hard time getting everything in there without being super boring. I did make a stop at Goodwill with my daughter yesterday and I think I have a plan for another … very different! Thank you as always for the feedback and support!

That looks _fantastic_ ! Really good job. So good it could be behind the scenes shots of the actual production.
I was happy enough with the "one long video" rather than two or three smaller ones. The problem with smaller ones is that YT doesn't always present them in the correct order and in my experience each part gets fewer views than the previous one. Unless you can break it into specific standalone sections (room / droid / shelves / greebles)
