Years ago I worked at a Mazda dealer. I had to drive a Mazda RX7 from NC to Virginia in a dealership swap. At 6’4” I can say it was the most cramped uncomfortable car I had ever rode in. In as much as I like the Miata, for me it would be a nightmare.

Daily driving one for 10 months now (nd2). Is great, really a good time. 184hp sounds low, but it goes. The car feels really well put together in and out. Really smooth gear change, very expensive feeling transmission. Stunning little car. Top tip, keep it away from hailstorms
Any car you Buy should be kept away from hail unless you don't like it ! Its easy to work on & many high quality after market parts are dedicated to this car ( Flying Miata / Goodwin Racing / Moss Miata just to name a few ). 1st modification probably 90% of owners make is giving the car a proper axleback exhaust system. Sound will improve dramatically when you pick the right one - ask me how I know ? 😎
@@ag4allgood yea about that...completely illegal here. The comment on the hail was cause we got hit pretty bad and the mx5 fared a lot worse than most cars in the area. Insurance covered the repair, but if the car was 5 year old it would have been a total loss.
@@ag4allgood Good try. I'm in Italy not california. By comparison on car modification california is the land of the free sadly. A car cover for hail is probably a good idea on the ND though
I love it how Mazda keeps giving the Miata enthusiasts what they want, instead of ruining it with pointless gimmicks like GM ruined the Corvette and Ford ruined the Mustang.
@@clutch7366👈😂 yes the Corvette objectively sucks when you look at the well documented engine issues that include overheating, unusual noises, reduced power output, issues with the junk infotainment systems, erratic dashboard displays, lighting issues, gear shifting issues, interior quality and functionality issues with the seats, trim, hvac issues, and the list goes on and on. Typical union built GM junk.
I drove a Miata (MX-5) for 20 years. If you've never driven one, there are not words that describe the joy of driving one. Fantastic car for what it is intended for.
I have owned 6 different Miatas since 2001. I am currently driving my 4th ND, a 2021 RF Club BBS. It is the most fun-to-drive vehicle I have ever owned….and I have owned 77 cars and trucks since 1971. My sports cars over the years ranged from a Mach1, Vette, Supra, 300ZX, several S2000s and an NB, NC and the NDs. Miata Is Always The Answer!
@@DustyPearl-13 thank you! At 72 I may be at the end of the road as far as sports car purchases go. I can’t think of another car I want to drive for fun….unless Mazda comes out with an all new MX-5 thats head and shoulders above my ‘21
The 2021 Miata RF was my daughter's graduation gift from college. She graduated a semester early, and the money she saved me went to purchase her car (the one semester and the cost of Miata were very similar). She drives this Miata everyday to work (she had a job offer before gradation) and she still loving the car. She said that the highlight of the day is driving to and from work everyday in her Miata.
@@victorbaird8220 I have a 2010 Miata that I bought new drive all through four seasons with snow tires in the winter and I’ve never been stuck. Of course it is a six speed stick shift.

I love how they look, but yes, only get one if you fit. I’m 6’1 and I tried to get in one when I was car shopping a couple years back and wow was that a cramped cabin. So sad too because I just know these things are hella fun to drive. (Good color choice man, from someone with a 2019 Soul Red Mazda 3!)
I dreamed of owning one forever. I work at a dealership and one came in on trade. I had no intention to buy it but I had to test drive it. When I tell you it was so far beyond my expectations. I told my wife and she said, "just buy the damn car!"
Bought one of the first Miatas, in 1989. Bought an ND2 last year and fell in love again. Being in the Rockies, mountain roads abound. Crisp fall day, top down, twisty road--heaven on earth.
I traded in my motorcycle for a MX-5. So I challenge the statement that it is not practical. It is much more practical and useful than a motorcycle. I enjoy every minute behind the wheel and look for opportunities to take it out for a drive. Now everything is at least a 1/2 hour drive - even if it is the grocery store across the street.😄 I regularly get 30+ mpg and that is with a heavy foot at times. A great car, wish I would have bought one years ago.
Idk. I have a Ducati in this same exact color and I'd want one of each for different reasons. I really loved my '21 mx5 loaner, so it's only a matter of time
I'm contemplating the same move. I own a Triumph Street Triple RS 765, but had an epiphany this year during an amazing ride in the hills. To enjoy that bike I had to push it to speeds that are.... really unsafe. I started riding slower, then less and less, because at lesser speeds, it's just not that fun, and tortures me with rain and the usual. I think something like a miata, in those same corners would be a fair bit safer, and fun and lesser speeds. I think I'm ready. It's hard.
@@malachii420 The street triple is a delight. I had a friend with the 1200 RS that decided they just couldn't risk it any more. I get the conundrum. Consider doing track days if you can swing it. I do most of my riding on a 950s Multistrada these days, but I still want some sportiness. Alas, first world problems
I have an older 1.5l ND and it is incredible. What an incredible car. I tell people it's the best car ever made. I love this video and I'm proud to be an ND owner.
I love my 2024 Red miata softop. Because of my bad knees, i bought an automatic. It's still a blast to drive. Iam 5'11", it fits me like a glove. Its a perfect second car.
this must be a sign. after watching the Automotive Press video about the same MX-5, i placed an order last saturday for one, and next thing you know this video shows up out of nowhere haha. previously owned an NC 2009. i'm so happy the have gotten one before it becomes mild hybrid by 2026. The old ones screamed chick car and they haven’t looked like anything that could be considered aggressive till 2016. I agree the hate is somewhat unfounded but not looking aggressive + being slow isn’t the best combo, no matter how fun it is to drive.

MX5 2012 GT PRHT!!! My favorite car I have ever owned!!!!! Toyota's are great, but this little convertible is the FUNNIEST CAR!!! Plus It is so simple I can do 90% of the upkeep!
I leased a 2023 and I plan on buying a 24/25 when my lease ends. I feel at home in this car. It has just the right amount of power to drive like a classic sports car. I will get in my MX-5 on a sunny Sunday morning and I will drive until dusk. When I come home I frequently can't recall everywhere that I went. The 6 speed manual transmission always has the correct gear to be in. I love the body roll feeling. It reminds me of my 68 MGB. You get the classic British sports car feeling with modern features, dependability, and power.
I learnt to drive a manual earlier in the year, and the first car I wanted to try out was the Miata. It did not disappoint. What a beautiful little car
I am the proud owner of a 2024 ND3 Miata Club and it’s a wonderful car and I am so impressed with it! I daily drive it in North Carolina and it’s been simply amazing! I have just shy of 6,000 miles so far and I can’t get enough of it! I run 93 octane Shell fuel and I am running 5W30 Pennzoil Ultra Platinum and just performed my 2nd oil change and switched the transmission fluid to Ford full synthetic IYKYK!
Just got my 2024 club BBS Brembo package. I’m at work for the week. Can’t wait for the weekend. I’m gonna be driving this car evening the winter time what a wonderful piece of engineering the best value for sports car in the entire world sorry now I have the electrified that’s why I had to pull the trigger before that is done.
My only vehicle right now is a Jeep Wrangler (2dr JK) that I fully intend to keep forever. I had convinced myself that I needed a truck both to keep the miles off the Jeep and mostly because I've moved a number of times in the last couple years and will be moving again within a year's time. The MX-5 was not at all on my radar, but see it's refined simplicity here - something I can't find with trucks now - it really pushing all of the right buttons. Thank you for this thorough yet timely showcase.
I’ve been looking at one since 2016. I finally pull the trigger on this 2024 model because they may electrified Canadian to a hybrid next year. I’m not ready for batteries yet.! so get it now in this state while you can or you have to buy a used one
I bought a 2016 ND GT and love it. Under 20k had 40k when I bought it. Took it to Miatas at the Gap in TN so much fun. So much better than the 97 NA I had
Wonderful review!!!!! Thank you for your time and expertise, you can tell you know your stuff and I'm sure your an amazing technician. I have the 2023 MX 5 grand touring RF. Every time I go into my garage I do nothing but smile! It's a wonderful vehicle. Thank you to your camera person as well, great shots and very professional. Thank you.
I'm on my 3rd MX-5 with the first one purchased in 1991. I have had the NA, NB and now the ND (which is the best). Truly wonderful cars and I smile every time I start it up. I have never had any mechanical issues with any of them- each driven over 100,000 miles. A far cry from my first convertible, a 1968 Triumph Spitfire.
I’m on my fourth Miata which is an absolutely magnificent 2023 RF GT with a 6 speed in the sickest color, Soul Red Crystal Metallic. I’ve had one of each generation of the four generations going back to my first which was a 91’, then an 01’, next an 06’ and presently the best one of all, my 23’. The RF model with the retractable hardtop is an absolutely fantastic feature and the 2.0 liter with 181 HP has brought the car to where it needs to be. I’ve been driving for 50 years and I’ve driven them all. No other car is more practical and more importantly, more fun than a Miata. I’m 64 years old and I don’t honestly know how much longer I’ll be driving but this one could arguably be my very last car so I’m gonna drive it like I stole it and enjoy it until it’s over.
145k miles on my 2014 mazda6 with the 2.5L skyactiv... I had the engine scoped recently and no need to clean inside. valves were discolored but no build up at all. I have had the car in 3 times over 10/11 years of ownership to have the intake valves looked at and so far its never needed them to be cleaned.
Regarding the parking brake sticking - I have mostly found it an issue in automatic cars as the owners tend to not use the brake, ever. In manual cars the handbrake gets used often and that issue is almost non-existent, I bought an auto a few years back as a used car, and the handbrake was seized. After repair and constant use since, no problems at all.
Agree with you on that parking brake. Never had a problem with it on my 2016 Club that got driven daily here in Northern Illinois for 7+ years. The ONLY time I didn't use the parking brake was in cold weather below 40 degrees so the cable doesn't freeze in place. Used 1st gear instead as a brake. The tricks of manual transmissions.
I got a ND2 in 2017 for my "fun car". I ended up commuting the thing because I loved it so much. 185k miles later not one damn thing went bad, ever. Just consumables and I did all my maintenance. I even tracked it few times a year. I traded it in for a 2024 RF (hard top) a month ago. I figured this is my last chance before all the manual, simple, pure sports cars go away.
Such a useful and practical review. I love my 2022 MX-5, the engine is very smooth and silky, and practical enough for road trips and can be a daily driver. It is a refreshingly low-tech car in terms of gimmicks, and it's totally driver focused. It would be the best car I've ever owned and I've been driving cars for over 30 years.
I'm 6'1", and this Miata fits me perfectly. It has great acceleration from a stop, though it doesn’t have the power to overtake other cars easily at highway speeds, which is fine by me. It’s a joy to own, and the maintenance costs are very reasonable. My main, though minor, complaint is that I often drive with the top down, so I always need to wear sunscreen. I wish Mazda had added a protective area on the black fabric top because I end up leaving white sunscreen marks when I push the top down to secure it. To avoid constantly cleaning the black convertible top, I keep a microfiber cloth under my seat and use it as a buffer when I lock the top in place. Another minor note is that the footwell is tight, so my right calf rests against the center console plastic when my foot is on the accelerator.
By the way, I also drive a 96' 5 speed 4Runner. I do get confused after driving the 6-speed Miata, back to the 5-speed 4Runner, where instead of the 1st gear it is the reverse (without lockout). Then when I got back to the Miata, I kept forgetting that an additional 6th-speed OD was available on the highway.
Technically, it's a double wishbone front suspension. It's got a coilover shock absorber that connects to the bottom wishbone. I've been driving my '94 Miata for over twenty years. Fantastic cars and very fun. No need for Corvette HP. Love that Mazda is still making quality vehicles. Nice review.👍
Hello sir. This video is suggested to me by TH-cam and when I saw the MX-5 I was like; why not, lets give it a try. And glad that I did that. The knowledge of yours and how you talk to us and make us understand every single detail is amazing. Thank you! And I wanna thank to cameraman too. I can easily feel that he/she has car knowledge combined with cameramen skills. He/she is not just a cameraman. Thanks guys, that was a great video.👌
One of the few new vehicles that I still like, since it is mostly still fairly "old school" built. I prefer the RF (hardtop) 6-MT version though since I'm not interested in opening the top or having a convertible in general. I just like smaller, sporty, fun vehicles in the subcompact or compact segment.
Been dailying a 2020 Club RF since April and it's so much fun. The clutch pedal engages a bit higher than I was used to but that's fine. The manual is so good on this car. I taught my teenage son how to drive it and he was cruising around a parking lot in less than 20 minutes. A couple things I feel I should point out though is CCN says there's no gimmicks... well there are kinda a couple. The seat speakers don't actually pump out any sound when you're listening to music, they only become operational for phone calls. There's also a plastic "sound tube" running from the air filter box to the firewall which is supposed to pump in engine noise. The consensus from Miata fans is that it's mostly useless and adds only a negligible amount of noise. I deleted mine which is easy to do and cleans up the beautiful and already mostly clutter free engine bay.
I bought my ND Miata exactly a year ago. I’m a first time Miata owner. A get the same feeling every time I drive it even after a year. Miata top tip. I always drive it with the top down even if I have to leave the windows up. Top down is the only way to drive a Miata.
Wonderful car. I wonder how many Car Car Nut will have sold as a result of this video. If I had different priorities, this would be in my garage tomorrow.
Used to own many Mazda's from the golden era (80s 90s and early 00's) back in the days and they were great except for two things: 1. rust (underbody) 2. expensive parts and I mean expensive parts when not available aftermarket. Not sure if that has been solved but for this MX5 I would make an exception, it is just such a nice car.
I love my Toyota GR86 that I just bought this year. Best car I've ever driven/owned. I am sad that it was never (and likely will never be) offered in a convertible. As a result, when I'm ready to purchase a convertible this/next year: I'll be going with the MX-5 Miata. I had $UCH a fun time test driving it when I had to decide between it (the MX-5) and the GR86 ( ultimately needed more power and more daily driver practicality). But... I AB$OLUTELY will be purchasing a Miata as my next car. Guaranteed.
AMD I love this review. Going over the simplicity of the mechanical details - no gimmicks ! Of course prices have gone up but compared to other convertible sports cars is actually much cheaper. 😎
The first new car I ever bought was a new Austin Healy Sprite, 1963. I loved it, and talk about basic, no roll up windows, no locks on the doors, Basic! I bought it new and it was $1,300. The Miata is a modern improvement of the Sprite and it is so nice!
I live in an extremely affluent community in the Silicon Valley. Since we've lived here, I've noticed so many Mazda vehicles (e.g., CX-5, CX-30, CX-50, CX-90, etc.). I especially notice when I see someone living in a multi-million dollar home driving a Mazda MX-5. I ended up buying a Mazda last year. It's sooooo fun to drive!
This is interesting to me because I've loved Toyotas (and this channel) for years. My daily driver is a 5th gen 4Runner, but after driving a 2024 Miata, I just had to have one as a second Summer vehicle (even though it's not a Toyota). It's just such a phenomenal car in so many ways.
I own a 2019 Abarth 124 Spider with all the options other than the Brembo brakes. It has been a great summer car with only 23,000 miles on her at this time. Most people have no clue that my Fiat is based on an MX-5 and think that the car is way more expensive than it is.
@@Kstxrd Except for the half second turbo lag (yes, I speak from experience) You can find tuning kits for the Mazda, too, BBR-GTI has some nice stuff. Anyway, what is it again that they say? The Fiat 124 is the only Alfa Romeo ever built in Japan? Just teasing, a 124 always gets a thumbs up from me :-) TBH, I would have loved seeing the Alfa version of the MX-5. Really curious to see which engine they would have put in the car. A 1750 TBI would have been amazing ... but probably too large and too heavy? Too bad Alfa canned the project 😞
I owned a 2010 mx5 Miata with 5 speed manual transmission. Best car I’ve ever owned in my 70 years on the planet. Fun fun fun to drive! SIMPLE! Really needed a 6th gear…. and only used premium gas! Okay, I get it. Great job Mazda! Thank you for allowing me to experience this treasure! 🙏🏼
Really appreciate the simplicity of operation for the convertible top. To me this is the best bang for the buck new convertible available in North America. Thanks for the video.
2019 RF owner here. Been daily driving mine since new and now approaching 40k miles. I am 50 and have had over 30 cars in my life. This is hands-down my favorite and I plan to keep it as long as possible. Only downside is the noise on rough roads. Wish it were a bit more quiet.
Drove in 2022ND2 for two weeks and put on over 4000 miles. Absolutely loved the car. It is obviously small but as a fun weekend car. my wife and I both agreed that we are looking for one to add down the road. Since the car doesn’t weigh much the 181 hp is plenty. Average 36 miles per gallon on highway. Very simple opening of the top. Interior fit and finish was top-notch.
A month after you uploaded your first video about it I did bought a used 2019 Club with the brembo/recaro package, the seats helps a lot for longer trips! And I still love it but my dad doesn’t (he is a 5’10 220lb) looking for keeping her longer!
Keep this treasure as long as you can, it's a little philosophy of life. We don't always need bigger, stronger, newer things to be happy. I'm 6.3 and 190lbs and can't understand that that's the reason why your dad doesn't like the MX. I have completed several 800 mile trips, mostly at illegal speeds😁 and only with fuel breaks. All without any discomfort from my body and actually just wanting to continue driving and enjoying! Especially when you can often leave much faster cars behind on winding roads. With MX you have the best conditions to learn driving physics without constant risk to your life. All the best and have fun!
Thank you so much Sir, for all your honest reviews and personal opinions about cars over the years!! I really enjoy watching all your shows and appreciate them with thumbs up!! I hope to see more of your wonderful videos in the future.😃
Great review , your reviews go into more detail than any others . It was nice to learn a little more about my car . I had a 2019 sport and now a 2023 Grand touring. I just love its simplicity nothing else compares. Plus you can wring it out and have a lot of fun without hitting arrest me speeds.
I was not a Mazda fan until almost 2 years ago. Still offer naturally aspirated non hybrid regular transmission cars which is what I want. If you want a turbo they offer that as well. Bought a Mazda right after the test drive. Simple and well built. I still like my Toyota but I am torn which will be next when needed. Mazda has a really nice product right now. Thank you for the reviews these are my favorites.
I bought a new '92 Miata for my wife thinking it would be a nice toy for her. It was no toy, it is/was a great automobile. We kept it for 30 years, 126,000 miles and then it went to our grandson. We hardly ever used the a/c and it stopped working after 15 years. Other than 2 timing belts, a set of brakes, a radio and a slave clutch cylinder that was it for repairs. Not a lot of power, but so much fun in the twisties. By the sounds of the review, they have done a great job of keeping it simple.
I love this channel. I bought one of these when they first came out, manual, 2L with LSD and loved it but in the 4 years of ownership was always chasing more. More power[full exhaust + tune]. Better handling because I hated the roll[BBR springs, wider wheels and tyres]. I found the gearbox slow when cold in the lower gears and the i20N that I drive currently has a better gearbox, especially with the rev matching on. It was beautifully built but for one glaring exception which I got roasted for complaining about on forums at the time. I saw a post where someone changed the seats and discovered that the original ones had bare steel frames which were heavily corroded. Mine was 3 months old when I saw the pics, unzipped the rear of a seat and was horrified to find corrosion on all of the welds and bare untreated steel. The dealership agreed it was bad and ordered 2 new seat frames but were unable to prime and paint them as that would have been an admission that Mazda was at fault. The compromise was that they gave me the new frames which I primed and then sprayed with gloss black enamel. Then they fitted them for me and sent the others back to Japan. I would be really interested to know if they decided to spent a few $ on the later cars to paint the seat frames. So if anyone has the courage to unzip the back of their seats and shine a torch in there I would very much appreciate an update. Those rear drive shafts are tubular at the larger diameter to save weight while gaining strength and rigidity. The real fun for me with that car was modifying it to suit my needs.
I owns the 2015 NC Club model. White with black hardtop. It’s automatic. Bought it new from the dealer. It’s been with me over 9 years. Every once in while I think about selling it. For the last 4 years I only use it maybe 3000 miles a year. Still is so cool when driving it that I stop thinking about selling it. It’s kept inside a close garage so I think I will keep until it become a classic. Simply my best car ever. Up to now zero issues whatsoever. It only have 67,00 miles so I think I will hold it for at least 20 more years( or maybe this car will outlast me). If still alive for 20 more years I will be 88 years old. Or maybe I will hand it to my Granddaughter.
I had a Miata for 11 years and put 275,000 miles on it. Other than regular and preventative maintenance, the engine was never apart. It was the most reliable car I have ever owned. It was not only exhilarating to drive, it was a joy to own.
I own a 1993 Miata. Most fun I ever had driving. Reliable, great handling, constantly getting complements on it at stop lights. I take it on a local track or on some back country farm roads and open it up and get a thrill doing so......ZOOM ZOOM.

This car is engineering art.
Better than a Harley....
Well done video. This is probably one of the best videos and descriptions of the Mazda Miata I've seen.
5 months into my 2024 GT, could not be happier. Yes, the car is simple, and it is simply good. Driving this car after work is my mental health plan.
145k miles on my 2014 mazda6 with the 2.5L skyactiv... I had the engine scoped recently and no need to clean inside. valves were discolored but no build up at all. What brand gas do you use?
Bought one 2 weeks ago, I love it!

GR86 is objectively better if you’re never going to open the top

Really appreciate the simplicity of operation for the convertible top. To me this is the best bang for the buck new convertible available in North America. Thanks for the video.
I love aluminum valve covers because in cold weather it stays warmer it makes less condensation “pudding”
2019 RF owner here. Been daily driving mine since new and now approaching 40k miles. I am 50 and have had over 30 cars in my life. This is hands-down my favorite and I plan to keep it as long as possible. Only downside is the noise on rough roads. Wish it were a bit more quiet.
I have a 1990miata. Everything is original no problems . Drive it about 6 k a year. I'll never let it go❤❤❤
Drove in 2022ND2 for two weeks and put on over 4000 miles.
I have snow nearly half the year; I'd opt for the RF because of that fact. Nice review, thumbs up!
A really good review. Hit all the key points and such a friendly, well spoken guy. First time I’ve seen one of his videos. Good job.
Beautiful interior and I always love seeing a small screen instead of the uselessly big screens we are seeing.
All the best and have fun!
all MX-5s are beautiful , such a sexy ride
Thanks for the review…you are amazing!! Just got a ‘24 convertible with the BBS package and love it
Thank you so much Sir, for all your honest reviews and personal opinions about cars over the years!!
As a Honda owner, I'm standing up and cheering for the firewall access to the ac expansion valve!
Thank you CCN. The best car reviews on the internet. Hands down.
arguably the most comprehensive review of MX5
Love the simplicity of this car. It's absolute genius.
I love the body colored interior trim too. It's a way to bring the outside... in. Adds to the feel of open air motoring.
Keen. I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and started watching your content to learn how to care for it properly
The only thing wrong with it is it's price. Yes! Could not agree more. And even then, if you can afford it, it is 100% worth it
I own a 1993 Miata. Most fun I ever had driving. Reliable, great handling, constantly getting complements on it at stop lights. I take it on a local track or on some back country farm roads and open it up and get a thrill doing so......ZOOM ZOOM.
Best car ever! It is a complete joy ride.
I have a 2020 RF GT and I absolutely love it! This was a great video my friend, you're an awesome mechanic!
My wife’s first car was a 1994 Miata Rally Edition in black. Such a fun car.
I have a 24 rf... I've owned some pretty high power cars over the years... German, American, and japanese... this car has been my favorite from a daily driver/weekend canyon carver. Absolute gem of a car.
