After a couple of petty negative points at the start (blaming the steering wheel size for scratching it, expecting the cruise control to make big changes in speed) I was ready to dismiss this review. interestingly enough these problems are the same that I have with my 2015 Mazda 3 (which basically has the same engine and same infotainment system and layout. Phone area to small, cruise control horrible to adjust, seats really bad. Everything else about the car is amazing tho, so I put up with it.
@@Kev27RS I agree, however, I rarely drive for longer than an hour and for an hour it's fine. For the very rare occasion that I drive for more than an hour I just put up with it.
I bought one new , four months ago and have nearly six thousand miles on it . It’s the best car I have ever owned. I thought I was doing well getting 48mpg on a run , 50+ that’s incredible. Normally 42 to 45 commuting.
I'm normally getting 33mpg for most my driving. But long motorway trips are 48-51mpg depending on speed and traffic. Longest trip was 13.5 hours in one day.
Hello richard I started my driving lessons few days ago. I just completed my 10th class today and I'm feeling much more confident now. Thanks to you. Your videos have helped me so much i can't express it. Great review. I have never seen such a detailed review of a car. I love it.
Great review, i have the 2019 rf and everytime i drive it or look at it i'm more than happy i bought it. No problems at all after two years now. You should have a smaller phone my 5se still fits great. The roof goes down all year round the heating is fantastic.
I just drove one for the last three days and I can understand why you end up saying it "one of the best purchases I've ever made". I've never had so much fun driving a car in my entire life. Thanks for the great review!
I'm on my 4th MX-5 and the 68-plate RF GT Sport I've got now is the best of the lot. Relaxing on the motorway, responsive on country roads and always absolutely great fun. - CONS Not great on the motorway with the hard roof down; feels like there's hurricane in the cabin. Soft-tops don't have this problem though. Boot could be bigger. Easy to press the volume or entertainment dial with your arm by mistake. - PROS Everything else - even the lack of glovebox isn't a problem. These cars look amazing, drive wonderfully and the fuel economy is surprisingly good. Best money I've ever spent. Mazda just keep getting these cars absolutely spot-on in terms of driving experience. Great video Richard - I like your presenting style 👍
Really enjoyed your video. I haven't had my 2020 Mazda MX5 100th Anniversary edition for a full year yet but I agree with most of your positive comments and consider the few negative comments not enough to worry about. Our Miatas are almost the same but you have the convertible top and your steering wheel is on the wrong side.
I owned an white modified WRX, and you are right. It looked clean most of the time. It seems white dirt doesn't show Dirt. Now I own a black MX-5 NC2 with light weight wheels and light suspension, and dirt shows nearly immediately after a wash. I know my WRX was way faster, but I just adore my MX-5. It is the way it behaves and turns. It always feels willing to do it, and then there is the open top feel of the thing. It feels so telepathic, it is like you are wearing a suit made out of car.
It's strange that no hate came your way from guys who bash the NC, asserting that the only true Miatas are NA, NB and ND. I own an NC1 (galaxy grey) and really like it as a third car. Enjoy your NC2 👍!
@@zsb707 I have accepted that my car is a lightened RX8 in roadster's drag. I like all Miatas but I needed that retractable hardtop for it to work as a daily driver. Mine one is Brilliant black, and I think it really looks good with the hardtop. The lightened wheels and coilover suspension made it even more fun. You're right, I have yet to receive the hate, but I have witnessed it way before I got mine one. Man, if you ask me, the NC1 had the best facia. To me, It looked more like a concept car back then. I really like Galaxy grey too. Yeah, we got the fattest of them all, but it is no less fun. Enjoy your NC1 too!
another +ve about the new MX5 (exactly the model you have) is this: - roof down, moderate rain + > 55mph .... raindrops will only fall 20-30cm behind the head rest the heavier the rain the faster you drive to keep the raindrops out and you have to try this car on mountain roads ... it shines
Fellow ND owner here who can relate to the exact same problem with a zipper scuff on the bottom of the steering wheel rim in the exact same location. The leather on the factory wheel is quite delicate. More motivation to replace the wheel with one of those fat rimmed alcantara racing wheels. 😄
Today, after coming home after a 600 mile round trip, my dog greeted me at the side of the house when I pulled into our driveway. Why? She and my wife knew the sound the car as I pulled in. So much more satisfying than my old NC
I own the 1.5L ND RF and I love it. I'm just too sad to be stuck in traffic on the highway everyday, that's a shame for that car. Also, for passionate drivers who won't have to bother with traffic, I would recommand the 2L 184 hp version.
I love my white 2018 ND soft top. I too have tracked mine around Thruxton. I’m amazed you’ve managed 50mpg but I’m happy that mine has averaged 41mpg over 30k miles.
I've owned a '90 Gen 1 NA MX5 for over a year now. I bought it specifically because they're dead simple to work on. I wanted a learning tool for doing basic engine work that was also a fun car. I figured I'd have it for a year or two, sell it off and never owning a sports car again. After a year of driving that car, I'm still considering selling it (and my Audi A3), but to buy a newer Miata to daily drive. It hooked me the second I got a chance to take it on the back roads. I don't even care about the impracticality and how it handles in snow, I'll figure that out. I just want one in my life.
LOL. There are 5 MX-5s in my garage. I can never bring myself to sell one. I'd say the ND is the best of the bunch, and still pretty easy to work on. Mazda actually cares about making the cars serviceable.
I take delivery of my ND2 next thursday, and your feedback (as well as your long road trip video) is precious information for future owners ! Thanks for sharing !
That purple coating is probably anti-reflective coating similar to that used on the crystals of some watches. Pretty clever to use it for the gauges. Hadn't ever heard of this being done before; very cool!
Great video and a nice review and update. I really did not like the sound system in my MX-5; replacement of main speakers and twitters made a nice difference. Also, a custom, smaller steering wheel solves some problems that you mentioned. 🙂 I find the seats very comfortable (8+ hour journey is not a problem), and I am a big and heavy guy. I think the steering is the most exciting feature of my Mazda. And I, too, think that it was the best purchase I ever made. I have a C43 AMG, but I much prefer to drive my MX-5, and unless I really have to, I don't drive the Mercedes anymore. Hopefully, that gives some testament to what a wonderful and exciting machine the Miata is. 😊
That was a great review! I had my G160 with the recaros from new, just passed 100.000kms since 2016. Reliable, cheap to use and own. Rotors, pads and tires is all I have had to replace. Oh, and I have had undercoating done two times since I daily drive it and plan to keep driving it as long as possible. I have trust in this brand 😊
Love it! Interesting observation at the end. I've owned many white cars and found that they are the EASIEST to keep clean. You get a light layer of dust on a white car and unless you're looking at up close you never even notice that's it's dirty until you clean it. Put a light layer of dust a dark colored car and it instantly looks filthy.
One of the best car reviews I have ever seen I like that there weren’t any annoying music too! Subscribed and put this video in my favorite folder Much deserved! 👍🏻
I own a year one Miata produced in 3/89 all original no options model with rare steel OEM rims and it weighs just a shade over 2,000 lbs. I've tried several newer MX5s like the 2020 and others but they just feel like boats because of the added weight. I live on Mercer Island WA, and it has a fantastic twisty road around it, and I can easily toss my car around the turns and leave any new modern sports car in the dust. Plain and simple, I love my Year One Miata, it has that Raspy Brilliant exhaust sound that's just second to none. If you ever have a chance to drive a 1990 year one, "DO IT", and the first thing you'll notice is the lack of weight and how quickly it accelerates because of it. I'm sure you'll agree with me.
Really like how you've broken everything down so nicely. The dislikes, although minor, are really nice to hear. I really want this car, and I've had a kia pro ceed for 8 years and this little beasty just WONT DIE. She's going strong.....I can't bring myself around to replace her, but when she does. God knows when, I want this.
I bought a new 2016 mx5, I loved everything about the car except the seats, wife & I would both get back aches after driving for awhile, it was the entry level mx5, I sold it because of this & bought a 2013mx5 top of the line, no more back pain.Great sports car.
EXCELLENT VIDEO. I sold my ND about 14 months ago to buy a 981 Porsche Boxster. I absolutely love the Porker, but I still miss the little MX5. Thankfully, I think my son will get one in the next few years!Woo-hoo! :-)
I have also owned my 2020 ND2 for 1 year and it has 12,000 miles. I have added a big brake kit, Ohlins, stiffer sway bar, underbody bracing, DOT4 higher performance brake fluid, and redline GL-4 75w-90 transmission fluid(OEM specs). I drive the crap out of mine. It’s a fun little car and a great car to learn how to drive, but it’s fundamentally flawed because of the transmission. My recommendation would be to only add better brake fluid, pads, stiffer sway bar, fluid change, and 225 width tires and that’s it. Don’t bother going all the way I did. It’s not worth it
We also have a 2004 Mazda Six, garage kept, with only 60,000 miles. The paint is Still shiny and the light lenses are clear like brand new. Last month we drive it from Florida to Kansas and back. It doesn’t know it’s 17 years young.
We've still got an '02 Mazda 2 which we've had for about 15 years. It's ungaraged and it's lost its shine. We've been saying for the last few years that we're going to need a new car soon. Our resolve has always been that we wont get a new car until our little Mazda hatch gives up the ghost. It just keeps on going! The darned thing wont break!
My 2002 Mazda6 just turned over 400,000km (250,000mi). Had it since 2009 and 53,000ks. A clutch, aircon compressor, fuel pump, a driveshaft and a set of discs all round are the only repair items in all that time. Still a great drive and though cosmetically a bit rough (lots of country roads and Aussie sun) it’s mechanically perfect!
Very comprehensive review. I have a 2017 RF and love it. Had a white car before and believe me, it's much easier to keep clean than the machine grey that I have. I'm obsessed with maintaining the glossy finish and it's quite a process! Great video though mate 👌
@@hypnotechno Hi, the colour choice is down to personal taste, but in my mind it's very classy and less 'mid-life-crisis' than the red! Like black, it's very easy to see light scratches and swirls which you don't see with white. If you want to keep it looking top notch, you have to put a lot of effort in. But it is worth it if you do.
@@chrislox1 thanks red it out but I like the machine grey. By the way I am in the verge of ordering but also consider it a model 3. Does that sound mad?
@@hypnotechno No, I love the NC! Don't take any notice of TH-camrs! Just be aware there's slight variations in design depending on the model year. It's a bit bigger too and there's more storage inside!
Only have had two previous cars which I actually enjoyed driving: my first was a '29 Model A (you never forget your first!!); the second was a self-restored '56 Corvette. My 2019 MX5 ragtop generates a smile all day! Added sways and tower braces to squelch most lean and chassis slop. Much more responsive and stable. Good review and refreshing honesty!
Absolutely fantastic review. Been wanting a Miata for a long time. Got one more year on my truck loan then I'll be looking at picking one up. Used market especially the first two gens have ridiculous pricing. You have many more smiles per miles to come in your ND! Cheers from the US.
I bought one the first year they came out 1990 keep it 14 years and traded it for a new one with 120,000 miles. My second one keep 17 years with 104,000 miles. The best cars I ever had.
Nice car, very fun to drive. You raised a good point on PCP finance. I find it pointless just giving cars back after paying off most of it, especially with prices of cars at the moment, it seems pointless as can sell on the car privately after or before paying off the balloon payment and making a profit. Obviously depending on people's circumstances but i will always buy a car at the end of a PCP if I'm in a position to
In some ways I prefer the NC version (previous model), especially for the interior items like it has a proper glove box as well as the storage between the seats and also it has much more practical and better placed cup-holders (1 in each door and also two in the centre console compartment). Also, you can get a proper powered hard top convertible version of the NC, whereas the ND only has a partial top, it's not a full convertible if you go for the hard top variant. I appreciate the engines and dynamics are superior on the ND.
Love this video. I had two (the Auto and Manual ND1 in London) and now I've moved to California and I have the ND2 manual (It's even better). I love this car.

Here is the thing with the cruise control: it won't let you adjust past a certain speed delta. If you are going 50kph and want to adjust in either direction, it will only let you adjust 7kph up or down. So for example to 57kph. As soon as you are going 51kph it will allow you to set it to 58kph and so on. In mph it's probably something like 4mph delta. If you hold the button it will just increase in speed and set the cruise control to the current speed, until you let go of the button. There is no way to just increase the set speed by an increment of two or five or ten.
Great video, thanks. I am thinking of swapping my m4 conv with this one.. manual gearbox, redline within legal speed limits, and top of it the design looks great!
No, it doesn't snow much here so it's not worth it. Very slippery! 😅 Bridgestone S001 aren't the best when cold and wet. Tests show that winter tyres are only actually advantageous in snow. In freezing dry temperatures summer tyres still perform better. Get snow for like a few days a year normally.
@@RichardFanders most tyre manufacturers recommend not using a summer tyre below about 7C as the compound gets hard, @Tyre Reviews recommends an all-seasons for winter in the UK given the low snow we see, much better low temp grip and far more capability in snow than a summer tyre on the odd occasion we do get some. They also did a comparison at various temperatures to show the differences that happen with temperature: th-cam.com/video/bKtnczk8Mxk/w-d-xo.html
This gave me a good insight into looking for a MX-5. The one I want is a 2 litre in black with red mirrors and side skirts. Not a daily just as a weekend toy. Very well presented video.
Wow I learned something about my 2014 Honda CR-Z from watching this video. It also has the purple anti reflective layer over the gauges. Unfortunately I wiped it down with some cleaner that I shouldn't have used on it one time and it ruined that layer. It is now permanently kind of cloudy/ smudgy. I had no idea why this happened until you called it out in this video. It's not a big deal, doesn't bother me at all unless I closely inspect it, but good to know. Great video, hope to have a miata one day. Love my CR-Z but it doesn't quite scratch the sports car itch. (Although its been a phenomenal commuter for 7 years and I've had zero problems out of it. It also has amazing storage with the hatchback which I know I'll miss if I get a miata one day.
My 2016 MX5 is coming up on 77,000 miles. It is driven year round in New Hampshire winters, that means salted roads. The rear brake calipers didn't like the salt, they would bind and ruin rotors quickly, so I bought and installed the Flyin' Miata Big Little Brake kit, Wilwood calipers all around, a good conversion. The kit costs less than the Brembo option, is lighter, and replaces the rear calipers Mazda supplies. Other than that my car is stock, I've had no other problems save that the keyless entry has stopped working, key battery replacement hasn't fixed it. Where I live there is no need to lock the car so I haven't bothered to pursue the matter. I've had the top down in 15 degree F weather, no need for gloves, kept warm. Got some looks though... As for changing brake pads with the Wilwood kit, pull two pins, press pistons back, swap pads, replace pins, good to go. The only downside to the kit is that the parking brake is rather weak, not an issue for me. My car is the base model, doesn't have the screen controllers on the console, a plus for me, I chose to go with that trim level to avoid the big screen on the dash. The car is the entertainment, I don't need all that other stuff.
This is an absolutely masterful review, thank you greatly for the detail. It’s clear you are passionate about the product and the process in which you review it is simply inspiring. No frills on complaints, and the same on compliments. Simply fantastic work.
My 160hp ND will be five years old in March '22. I bought it new and it now has nearly 100,000km on it. It still looks and feels like new. Other than for regular maintenance, it's been in the shop four times: Twice to replace a cracked windshield (unlucky hits by stones or screws on the road), once for some minor paint-work (thanks to some anonymous a$$hole in a parking lot). The only thing that was the car's "fault" was the front right wheel-sensor going bad. Happened under warranty, but the bill wouldn't have been that bad (~€300 all in). Overall, this thing is pretty darn reliable. What I will recommend is that if you're looking to get an ND, do try and get the Recaro seats. I made it a point when I was shopping for the car and I test-drove both seats before buying. They're not *that* different from the regular seats (pretty sure they share components under the skin), but they are different enough to warrant the extra cost. They do hug you a lot tighter (without being uncomfortable) and they vastly improve the interior's look, IMO. And they do offer a bit of lower back support. To me, both the seat and the backrest feel firmer on the Recaros than they do on the regular seats. I made some pretty long trips in those things, including a few ~600km drives on the Autobahn, and I never felt beat or tired when I got out of the car. Plus, in my country, they were included in the Sports-Pack which you had to order to get the Bilstein suspension - and I really wanted those yellow shocks... :D Re the "phone problem": Not sure if yours will fit, but my regular Galaxy S20 (in an Otterbox) fits perfectly into the cupholders. I always have the passenger-side cupholder inserted into its location up-front (not near the glove-box) and that's where my phone lives. The open construction of the cupholder even allows relatively easy access for the charging cable.
Thanks for a great vid. Was thinking about getting the RF, but you may have swayed me to the rag top. The comment about being able to have the top down in all but the coldest weather was most enlightning.
Thanks again Richard for your very informative and comprehensive video's. As a result I bought exactly the same car (100th Edition) ! My current roadster is a Mercedes SL350 from 2005, a very luxurious "tourer" with lovely sounding V6 but the costs of ownership drives me crazy and I am sure the MX-5 will give me the same fun. Cheers !
Great review! Interesting that most people are right handed, but right hand drive cars require you to shift and use controls with your left hand. I’ll bet it makes you guys more ambidextrous than us left hand drivers. 😀
My mum has the 100th anniversary edition as well, and it’s a lovely car.. but she previously had the Sport Recaro edition and she does sometimes miss those amazing Recaro seats!
I've owned my NA 1993 Miata since I bought it new. Driven halfway across the US a couple times in it, just under 200k miles on it now. Original clutch, no major engine issues, still love to drive it. I did have to replace the top once, most expensive thing I have had to do to the car. It's getting a bit rusty on the bodywork (I live in an area that salts the roads in the winter and it's my daily driver).
Yes I live under a rock, what of it? I just now learned of the high-beam dimming being a thing. That’s brilliant! You’d never guess it was a thing with so many of the vehicles out on the road (here in the US, at least).
when you check the oil when the engine is warm, you have to take the dip stick out and give it a few minutes before putting it back in so the oil can settle. then you will get a very easy reading
Brilliant video, I listened to every word. And respect to you for doing track days; I know so many people who have track performance cars, but treat the public road as the track - they basically just want to go 0-60 quicker than anyone else and that's it, which is a pretty expensive and very short ego trip
Wow...as an American, I often find it difficult to spend any extended time listening to the Brits. You are wonderful, interesting and I watched every second of your video. I am searching for a new car as we speak and the MX-5 is at the top of my list. Thank you for your contribution and continued success.
I’ve had a GR Yaris on order for over a year and a half, expected delivery in September but now they’re saying they have no idea when it could be. I’ve been struggling to find another car that really excites me for the same price but I think this will be the car I get if the Yaris doesn’t pan out. Thanks for the review, it ticks every box I’m looking for from a car - engaging, not too powerful but still very fun and able to ride out the gears. Can’t believe you’re getting 50mpg from it cruising!
Had mine since Sept 2019, agree with everything in this review (including the squeaky windows). Over winter I stick mine on a set of OE 16s I bought for £100 the set and 195/55 R16 winter tyres and it feels so much nicer on the smaller wheels I might pick a set up for summer use too. It was like a mountain goat in the snow too. They shot up in price just after I bought mine, I got a GT Sport Nav for £23k, the same spec is £30k+ RRP now.
I own a 2018 ND RF with the 2l 160ish horsepower engine. Absolutly love the car... - Great review! - i see similar problems. Especially the dirt in the back and the strange storage thingy between the seats. I had an NC before.. - there was a lot more room for things. Buut in my opinion the ND is the absolut best of MX5
That was a really nice video man, i enjoyed every second of it. Even its so hard to buy this in where i live, as a 21 year old guy, hope i can get a car like that one day to have a nice and fun drive.
Great review sir. I own a 2017 RF and agree with your assessment. Use the same ceramic product on the paint too. Did not know you can use it on the windshield. Will try that.
Kudos for use of the word dimwitted! Thanks, driving my NC but saving for the ND as it's (similarly) a belter 👍 Except I have the same dipstick adventures to look forward to!

Phone area to small, cruise control horrible to adjust, seats really bad. Everything else about the car is amazing tho, so I put up with it.
@@Blockbuster2033The seats being bad is a big negative point on a car though!
That's a lot. Isn't it advertised as 25 or 30 or something? Pretty damn good numbers
How much was your?
Which engine size have you bought? Economy figures sound great
@@WayneGoodmanPhotography It was the 2 litre. I’m quoting mpg imperial. The US gallon is smaller so they will have less mpg .
Hello richard
I started my driving lessons few days ago. I just completed my 10th class today and I'm feeling much more confident now. Thanks to you. Your videos have helped me so much i can't express it.
Great review. I have never seen such a detailed review of a car. I love it.
Thank you 😊
Two years later, how did you get on? Driving confidently?
Well, that's an elaborate review, brilliant. Lovely colourcombo too. In 20 years, I'll buy this car, currently owning a NB
I also have a NB. Currently at 176000km. After some time (maybe at 220000-270000) ill switch to NC and after that: ND
Great review, i have the 2019 rf and everytime i drive it or look at it i'm more than happy i bought it. No problems at all after two years now. You should have a smaller phone my 5se still fits great. The roof goes down all year round the heating is fantastic.
Great video Richard!
I like you don't just try to promote this car and don't just showcase it as a new car. Thanks for your honesty :)
I just drove one for the last three days and I can understand why you end up saying it "one of the best purchases I've ever made". I've never had so much fun driving a car in my entire life. Thanks for the great review!
Such a beautiful spec! Love that you drove this everywhere. Great job on this sir
I'm on my 4th MX-5 and the 68-plate RF GT Sport I've got now is the best of the lot. Relaxing on the motorway, responsive on country roads and always absolutely great fun.
- CONS
Not great on the motorway with the hard roof down; feels like there's hurricane in the cabin. Soft-tops don't have this problem though.
Boot could be bigger.
Easy to press the volume or entertainment dial with your arm by mistake.
- PROS
Everything else - even the lack of glovebox isn't a problem.
Our Miatas are almost the same but you have the convertible top and your steering wheel is on the wrong side.
right side
@@vlenhoff Thanks!
another +ve about the new MX5 (exactly the model you have) is this:
- roof down, moderate rain + > 55mph .... raindrops will only fall 20-30cm behind the head rest
the heavier the rain the faster you drive to keep the raindrops out
and you have to try this car on mountain roads ... it shines
I miss these straight-to-the-point videos.
Thanks for the review.
Fellow ND owner here who can relate to the exact same problem with a zipper scuff on the bottom of the steering wheel rim in the exact same location. The leather on the factory wheel is quite delicate. More motivation to replace the wheel with one of those fat rimmed alcantara racing wheels. 😄
This is such a nice car. Im literally working 40 hours a week to save up for this car. Cant wait to get my own
love to see this level of detail review for my 2012 NC GT!! I do love my MX5, best car I ever owned! Love to do 24hour drives through National Parks.
You own the best one
Today I just purchased a 2017 Miata MX-5 soft top with 10,000 miles. So excited!
Just press and hold the cruise control + and - buttons when leaving a 30 zone etc, will accelerate/decelerate until you let go.
One of the best car reviews I have ever seen
I like that there weren’t any annoying music too!
Subscribed and put this video in my favorite folder
Much deserved!
I agree the seats need to be more supportive.
What a great review , learnt new stuff even though I’ve watched a load of tubes about the mx5. Highly recommended.
EXCELLENT VIDEO. I sold my ND about 14 months ago to buy a 981 Porsche Boxster. I absolutely love the Porker, but I still miss the little MX5. Thankfully, I think my son will get one in the next few years!Woo-hoo! :-)
Just bought one, will be delivered next week, thank you a lot for this information. Now I understand, that it was a right choice!
Enjoy! I'm very happy with mine.

Logged in just to like the video. I love how it gives that chill British vibes without being too technical and cold
It’s not worth it
What's wrong with the transmission?
I've watched this video 6 times and every time I watch it, I unlike the video just so I can press the like button again. Love it
We had one and loved it. Neat, good looking and fun to drive.
Great video though mate 👌
machine grey is difficult to keep clean than white? yikes I was about to order this colour. Otherwise what do you feal about the mahine grey
@@chrislox1 no I meant Tesla model 3 I am deciding between new miata 2022 and model 3
That color combination is everything!
Agreed
Even the old Miata's are holding value quite well right now. Crazy
Nice car, very fun to drive. You raised a good point on PCP finance. I find it pointless just giving cars back after paying off most of it, especially with prices of cars at the moment, it seems pointless as can sell on the car privately after or before paying off the balloon payment and making a profit. Obviously depending on people's circumstances but i will always buy a car at the end of a PCP if I'm in a position to
Or just look after it for the full term and keep it longer after the pcp has finished.
It's nuts that the mx5 gets better mileage on the track than my ford explorer in a small town.
Have both in the garage (as well as 2 NA's). NC is a bigger car all-around. Much bigger inside, but you really feel the heft in sporty driving.
I have 2011 NC and i cant get over the fact that ND has no hard top variant. But i love the new look of the ND.
This was an absolutely fabulous review! Love the car, and your run through it was fantastic.
Love this video. I had two (the Auto and Manual ND1 in London) and now I've moved to California and I have the ND2 manual (It's even better). I love this car.
That’s dope, how’s the manual during city driving, assuming you live in a city like LA?
@@HisMajesty99 I do live in LA! It’s great. I’m flying down the freeways and I just keep it relaxed when I’m in traffic
@@HasnaneArain sounds awesome man haha, glad to hear you’re having a blast with it! I recently moved up to Seattle and I’ve been thinking abt trading in my Mazda 6 (which I bought new a few months ago) for a Miata. Mainly worried abt driving manual in the city tho, plus there’s a decent amount of hills here. It would be my first time driving stick, so I’d have to learn as well, and the city is not a good place to start lol. But I’m 22 and single, now’s the best time for a 2-seater sports car XD. Tbh with you. you should go for it! I’ve been to Seattle and yes there are big hills but you’ll learn! Just make sure your safe (that’s most important). I drove a manual in London (which is all just stop start at 20MPH).

@@HasnaneArain thanks for the advice man! I’m srsly considering it now haha. I think I’d rly enjoy it. Gonna wait a few weeks to see what the 2022 Miata is gonna be like, they’re supposed to announce it soon lol (I heard end of October). The current model is already rly nice, so idk what they couldn’t possibly do to make it better
It does seem to work that way.
Great video, thanks. I am thinking of swapping my m4 conv with this one.. manual gearbox, redline within legal speed limits, and top of it the design looks great!
Just bought a 2019 rf myself, as someone who's used to good back up cameras this is quite literally my only issue so far.
Great to see the joy you get out of driving down the great British B roads. It really is the simple things in life 😁
so glad you get to enjoy that car.
you put so much positivity and knowledge out there, its great to see you enjoying the fruits of your labour ❤
Great video mate, I've just got one and had it for a week so can relate!
How did you get on driving it in the snow? Did you change to winter tyres?
13:57 You remind me of Jim Carrey
I have heard that before.
Re the "phone problem": Not sure if yours will fit, but my regular Galaxy S20 (in an Otterbox) fits perfectly into the cupholders. I always have the passenger-side cupholder inserted into its location up-front (not near the glove-box) and that's where my phone lives. The open construction of the cupholder even allows relatively easy access for the charging cable.
WHAT A GREAT COMPLETE DETAILED REVIEW FOR ME !! 👍
2:36, who saw it? Great review Richard. Also your Driving Lessons channel is superb.
Thanks for an honest review.. love knowing all the little annoying things before getting it & a lot of people are afraid to call it out
Thanks for a great vid. Was thinking about getting the RF, but you may have swayed me to the rag top. The comment about being able to have the top down in all but the coldest weather was most enlightning.
The production quality and editing is so spot on. Loved it. 👍
A car review that was genuinely interesting to listen to, I think you may have a future in this
Thanks again Richard for your very informative and comprehensive video's. As a result I bought exactly the same car (100th Edition) ! My current roadster is a Mercedes SL350 from 2005, a very luxurious "tourer" with lovely sounding V6 but the costs of ownership drives me crazy and I am sure the MX-5 will give me the same fun. Cheers !
I hope you enjoy it!
Great review! Interesting that most people are right handed, but right hand drive cars require you to shift and use controls with your left hand. I’ll bet it makes you guys more ambidextrous than us left hand drivers. 😀
Steering is more important than changing gear.
Oh my goodness I have been debating upgrading my NC to an ND and I just loved this video so much. Thank you for your input!
Such a great vid I think Mazda are about to make a sale. You sealed the deal for me! 👍🏻
My mum has the 100th anniversary edition as well, and it’s a lovely car.. but she previously had the Sport Recaro edition and she does sometimes miss those amazing Recaro seats!
I would be interested in trying those seats.
That's amazing to hear! Nearly 30 years.
Yes I live under a rock, what of it? I just now learned of the high-beam dimming being a thing. That’s brilliant! You’d never guess it was a thing with so many of the vehicles out on the road (here in the US, at least).
I am very interested in a 2021 or 2022. This has been helpful, especially the positive comments from so many others.
when you check the oil when the engine is warm, you have to take the dip stick out and give it a few minutes before putting it back in so the oil can settle. then you will get a very easy reading
He just convinced me to exchange my iPhone for a smaller version but I’m torn between soft or hard top. Great review!
That's UK mpg.
Yes, the price new has increases significantly along with all cars. Mine was just over £30k.
Best review I've watched and I've watched loads I'm buying one tomorrow I'm sold
Just bought one, enjoy it when driving everyday. Brilliant driver’s car

Really good, balanced review, thanks for sharing. Happy miles out there
I own a 2018 ND RF with the 2l 160ish horsepower engine. Absolutly love the car... - Great review! - i see similar problems. Especially the dirt in the back and the strange storage thingy between the seats. I had an NC before.. - there was a lot more room for things.
Buut in my opinion the ND is the absolut best of MX5
>Heater
100% yes. My 31 year old NA has the best heater i've ever dealt with. Even in -20C i could not run it on full because the cabin got too warm.
I think all of those nitpicks are valid and I even noticed them when I went for a 2 hour test drive. Definitely can imagine the long term annoyance
Cheers from also a ND owner. Know your channel from your driving instructions vid, but now ur personal channel pop up, glad to see this vid. Btw many of your point, small details are so true! really nice for future ND buyer hah
