its one of the few cars i actually pay attention to the newer generations of, despite being in my 20s myself. sarah's completely right about the need for simplicity and the feeling that brings.
The Miata is a case study in doing things the right way. Never losing sight of the goal, even in an ever-fattening market. Every generation was an improvement over the last, and every generation has it's own distinct character. I have owned thirteen miatas over the last few decades - all generations and in a variety of states (turbo, supercharged, stock, itbs, etc) and enjoyed them as daily drivers, autocross, road course, and even drag cars - and they can do it all well. If you don't need more than two seats, and you don't need to haul your entire house around with you - the Miata is about the perfect automobile. I have been fortunate enough to own / drive a variety of fun cars (I worked in custom/hot-rod/race shops my entire professional life) and not matter what awesome vehicle I spent the day with - I was always thrilled to hop in my Miata. Hagerty has an excellent video on the creation of the Miata, and how it nearly didn't come into fruition. In the list of the greatest cars of all time - the Miata deserves a spot.
I agree - the Miata is an exceptional car. Currently I currently own a 7 year-old ND and previously had an NC with the power retractable harrdtop. A ton of fun, supremely reliable and very well made (in Hiroshima, I understand). Always brings a smile to my face.
I owned and loved a 2000 Miata Special Edition that I modded with racing coilovers, a header and exhaust, an intake, and "larger" 15-inch wheels and 205 rubber. As much as I loved that car, I sold it to buy a 2014 981 Boxster with a PDK. That was an amazing machine, but I missed my old Miata. I test drove a 2019 ND2 and instantly knew the Boxster needed to go. I bought a 2022 ND2 Grand Touring and have been in a state of automotive bliss ever since. Miata Is Always The Answer, especially if you're driving to the dentist for a root canal.
@floodtheinbox, install the Goodwin Racing RoadsterSport Race exhaust and you won’t even miss the Boxster 6 much. That exhaust is maybe $400, is super easy to install and weighs only 12lbs. With it, the little Skyactive makes absolutely glorious sounds!
I have a 2021 Sport with 16” wheels and 205 Continental Contact tires. The thing sticks to the road like glue. Best bang for the buck car… And EVERY drive is fun!
I’m not sure why I keep watching Miata reviews (I got one of these recently!) but after watching like 20+ I have to say yours is by far the best! Hope you keep making these amazingly thorough reviews!
Thank you for this funny, informative, to the point, and no bs review! I have watched a lot of reviews to kill the time while waiting for the delivery of my 2024 Mazda MX5 RF. This is definitely one of the best reviews I have seen.

Anyone else think Sarah's hair is the best indicator of the braking performance??? Sarah, you should take these drivers' cars up Mt. Lemmon. Speaking of "Lemons", a metallic lemon wrap would solve the color selections ...
My wife and I bought a 1995 Miata in 1997 with have had a Camaro, a Corvette and a BMW 325 convertible at different times. The little Miata was the most fun to drive especially on winding back roads all without breaking the speed limits.
Spot on assessment of the ND Miata. I have loved Miatas since my wife owned one 20 years ago (NB model). The 'on-paper' acceleration looks lackluster, but by the seat-of-the-pants, it feels remarkable. Every sensation is amplified in this car, and never fails to put a smile on your face. In an era of modern heavy vehicles, Mazda proved them all wrong with a vehicle that weighs the same as the original did 30 years ago. Well done, and thank you Sarah.
My ND3 GT soft top manual is arriving in 2 weeks. Having owned a ND for a couple years and loved it, I can't wait to experience the updates this refresh brings. Most reviewers seem to agree that the steering feels better, but the new LSD is a bit less tail happy. In any case, no one can deny that the Miata is the most fun you can have behind the wheel, at a price middle class wage earners can actually afford. I've always regretted selling my first Miata, but this one is forever. I will say, as an older driver who enjoys the creature comforts and tech features of modern cars, the GT is the only trim I'd choose for a Miata, especially since it doesn't add much weight or detract from the driving experience in any way.
Great review of a lovely old school car. Light weight, simple. Always wanted one, but too tall to fit comfortably.... You are 100 percent correct, a car like that will be ruined as an EV. Hopefully that won't be the future....
It's great how they kept the design philosophy of the original after all this time. I owned a Yellow '92 I bought new when I was in my early twenties. It was my daily driver until 2018 and now my nephew owns it. He's into the 90's Japanese car scene and loves it. I wish they would make it with a beautiful retro 1960's style body.
Mazda and Toyota are the only car companies I believe truly understand what driving is about. I've had my 1.5l 2016 MX5 since 2019, and I'll probably have it for at least another 5 years, if not more.
This is bull. I drove a couple of Mazda 3s and it was just a road lump like a Civic or a Corolla or (what's the Datsun one?) I've driven a couple of Accords as well and one was a mess, the older 91 (stock, and less than a decade old when I drove it) was an absolute monster. It depends entirely on the model, and the generation, and the target demographic. You really can not generalize.
@@creamwobbly Agreed. I like Toyotas... have owned a few... but, for roughly the last 20 years, that company has run by the accountants and it shows. Utterly reliable, but utterly BORING. Appliances. I mean... they basically badge-engineered a freaking BMW to be their flagship sports car in the "Supra" and did the same thing with Subaru for their affordable sports car in the FR-S/86! Shameful! We're finally starting to see some signs of the "old" Toyota building cars for people who have a passion for driving in the new GR Corolla, but that's still built on a very humble economy car platform. The Miata is built on a no-compromise platform that isn't shared with anything else they build - and that has been the case ever since the Miata debuted in 1989. So happy to see Mazda staying true to that original vision all these years later.
@@ZZZRaven65 I’d agree, while I think Toyota cars and trucks are supremely engineered and built, the majority of their cars have had the appeal of a washing machine. The new models are far better in terms of style and performance. Mazda has generally built cars with a great road presence. This MX-5 is a perfect example of what Mazda has always done.
Mazda and Porsche in my opinion are the two that give a damn about drivers. Both manufacturers encourage their owners to drive the cars on track and neither deny warranty claims automatically for driving their cars too hard.
After having my NC fo ten years, I now have this one. Next level driving. A massive thank you to Mazda for keeping it all real roadster. Simply no competition. Just quick. As we drive the right hand drive down here, I don’t hit the mouse thing in the console and the hand break is on the drivers side. 😂 really great review by the way.
I am anxiously waiting to pickup my Snowflake white pearl 2024 Miata Club tomorrow morning! I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep at all tonight! Luckily I live in North Carolina and the Tail of the Dragon is just a couple hours drive away and will be a great place to take her out and give her the beans!!!
Her face absolutely lit UP giving it The Beans!!! lol Greatest car review, “…there’s no words that do justice for what it feels like to drive this car.” Sarah is truly awesome ❤
"...to have every single safety feature to take the responsibility of driving out of your hands" => I so much agree with you on this ! I fail to understand why people don't see that. Removing the responsibility of driving also removes the joy of doing it right !
I know wraps exist, but i would still love to see Mazda work their magic with a green from factory like on the old NB. At meetups its fun to occasionally see the 30th Anniversary orange, but ND's are a sea of red, black, and a blue that's often also black. Paint to sample level is probably unreasonable, but if club models are already build to order it feels like only a benefit to offer (for another cost) a greatly expanded palette
This is why Mazda is so solid as a company, when they do make changes it really is to improve the cars just look at how perfect the new 30's are. The old adage if it ain't broken don't F with it
I picked up my ‘24 ND3 a month ago. It’s an RF but otherwise identical to the one you reviewed. Thank you for loving the car. I do, too, and that made my day!
I was playing on the wife’s fear and saying I should buy her one. I got a no no, we live in Alaska. Really fun watching her talk about what is needed up hear. I’ve always liked the Miata!
It’s Friday morning and Sarah the Great has another in depth review for us! Thanks for putting so much work (and humor 😀) into these! Just the greatest 🙂♥️
Her description of her driving experience is similar to my experience driving a Pontiac Fiero many years ago. Your riding low to the ground... basically sitting on the floor. It's like a street legal go-cart. Not a muscle car, but fast enough to keep up with traffic... and so fun to drive... especially... no... specifically... with the manual transmission.
Sarah, your channel gets a 10, be it your incredible attention to detail on your builds, or the knowledge and depth of analysis you bring to new car reviews. I love ❤️ your work. Big fan here. And I love this Miata! My friend has a 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider (Graduate model), two liter naturally aspirated DOHC four cylinder with 3 pedals and an easy-folding soft top. It's amazing that a similar formula is still available new.
iI'm getting mine in June and I can't wait to finally drive a Miata again. A Miata is not fast (220 km/h - 140 m/h is not really fast) but it is damn quick. and yes it's true, there's no other vehicle with more grins per kilometre
Luv that I was able to get the base model with cloth seats, no farkles, smaller rims with more sidewal, cloth top, softer suspension … perfection on the imperfect back twisty country roads. Exceptional manual with happy rev engine.
I have a 2022 ND2 soft top GT and everything you say is 1000% correct. This car puts a smile on my face EVERY day. I LOVE THIS CAR! Only thing I dislike about it is the steering wheel is a bit narrow and hurts my hands over long distances, but there are lots of great aftermarket steering wheels available.
Get yourself one of those one piece steering wheel covers. You know it kind of looks like tire. But covered with cool cloth that keeps your hands comfortable with thicken up the steering wheel and keeps your steering wheel from getting dirty and damaged from the sun. And all the ones that I've gotten never slipped they totally grip the steering wheel for Years.
The little roadster in the 2016 Club soft top form really is a dialed in driving joy ! ABS is the only drivers nanny in my car. At 2340 pounds its light weight makes it nimble in the corners & its still a quick car from a stop. Ordered a 2024 Club soft top in the same spec except the seats will now be Recaros instead of the cloth. It will be bitter sweet to see my ND1 Club go ! The new ND3 Club soft top now weighs around 2365.
Used to drive one some years ago. Middle life crisis. You need some agility to get in and out of it in style. That's why I drive an SUV now. Sarah is the hottest, smartest petrol head in TH-cam. Big heart.
You'll love it! If it's too small for you, the series before this, the NC which I own, is a little roomier all around and still a blast to drive. They made a huge comeback as a favorite for track drivers racing on weekends! 😎🤘
I love my ND2 Club RF! Your feedback is on point and is my favorite vehicle I have owned. I installed coilovers and it is a beast on the twisties! Keep up the great work!
Remembering when the Miata first came out, it was said to have the DNA of a Lotus. Yep. Always wanted one of these little beasties. Great review! Nice reverence for Iconic cars... leave perfection alone... just keep making 'em!
Our Fiat 124 is still running great at 95000 miles, but maybe we should get a MX5 before they stop making them as well. Great job as usual on the review. Still waiting on that PO box number to send you a thankyou for all your hard work.
Nothing brings as much joy as fanging my MX-5 through the twisties, but I also smile just driving it to the supermarket. The MX-5 is what sportscars were originally intended to be. Just one thing, though, if they had put the battery in the boot, there'd be even less room for luggage as there is now! Wonderful to see a big smile on your face driving our favourite car, Sarah!
I had a 1989 built 1st gen MX5 90 model year. It had some of the most attention to detail construction I had experienced. It had the stainless tailpipe, super neat trunk, and interior. The 1600cc motor was so neatly installed, plumbed and wired it looked like a show car. The top was amazingly easy for a former MGB and Sprite driver. Almost as easy as the current one. All for $14000 negotiated down from a 16500 MSRP. It was 21 years old when I decided it was time to say bye. 250k miles. Original clutch. Still ran great but the AC and power windows had failed.
I'm 6'3" 160lbs and I just ordered some aftermarket seat brackets that lowered the seat an inch and allows it to slide slightly further back. I fit great now, I wasn't not gonna buy one of these cars, especially for the price I got it 3 years ago and factoring in that these also fixed the issues I had with the earlier generation of Miata's being the poor fuel economy on the highway. (Think I got about 23-24mpg in my NB2). When I'd commute highway, I'd average about 36-37mpgs in this, which is phenomenal considering how well even the ND1 performs stock.
Have you thought about a Miata as a future JDM project? I started driving with the original model as a Japanese import to the UK back in the early 00's, Bright red with Bomex bodykit, the works - best car I ever owned. Love to see you work your magic on one of these classics!
There are eight cars in my garage. Including a couple Italians and a new C8 Corvette. If it ever comes down from on high that 'Thou shalt have only one fun car', they would all go and I would keep my 10AE NB Miata. There is no better or more fun car to drive. Maybe I will check out an ND but the Sapphire Mica on mine is hard to beat. Loved the review Sarah!
Bought one new in 2017 (1.5L motor, because Europe) and sold it in 2019... Because I had to. But since then, there's not a single day in which I don't wish I could buy another. Before that, I owned all previous iterations, too, but the ND is just perfect. I enjoy all your reviews, but with an MX-5 involved, this was bound to be special. Brilliant car and I'm definitely getting another one soon enough!
Still remember back in '90 when these first came out. It was such a joy to have little roadsters back in big numbers. Yeah what happened to the yellows and greens this car used to get?
Just found this channel. Its so entertaining. You are doing videos with knowledge, humor and self distance. Its really Great to see someone loving what they are doing. I dont know what you are on about most of the times but your presentation certainly make it worth watching. Seems like a true petrolhead. Enjoying every car on its own merit and its possibilitys with a very personal view. Thanks Sarah! Keep doing this👍
In 1989 I was deciding between a manual RX-7 convertible and the then first year 1990 Miata. I went with the RX, partly because the dealer markups on the Miatas were out of control and would have cost more than the RX. I still have that RX-7 after 35 years and I love it (and the 8000 RPM redline rotary in the mountains is bliss), but the simple approach of the MX still draws my interest. Glad to see Mazda has stuck with what works.
I've owned 2 Miatas, really need another. They're so much fun and pure. Also, hey Mazda, how about some actual fun colors. We've got red and 50 shades of dental office waiting room. You can do better.
Another great review. This seems to be one of the highest overall review scores. Well deserved. Light, simple, easy to maintain, priced fairly and fun to drive.
I'm glad that Mazda have kept the car simple, it's keeping true to it's dna.

and yes it's true, there's no other vehicle with more grins per kilometre
HIGH SCORE! I love this car
I worked at a Mazda dealer and got to drive some of the NB's. They were sooo much fun. And yes, those shoes are cute!
0:59 exactly 11.59 MILLIMETER inches in diameter. Very Schporty. Schuch fun!
Look into the Kenstyle steering wheels or Cypher. Either one is custom fit and airbag compatible.
@@mikeb9569 Yup, the Cipher is the one I went with, from FlyinMiata.
All I can say is that you and that car were made for each other !
8:00 nice. Love you driving this.
I just bought one of these a month ago and I absolutely love it. I got the RF Club M6 and it's so fun.
best review of a miata on youtube .
The new ND3 Club soft top now weighs around 2365.
always a pleaser to have new video to sink my teeth in, thx Sarah😊
Used to drive one some years ago. Middle life crisis. You need some agility to get in and out of it in style. That's why I drive an SUV now. Sarah is the hottest, smartest petrol head in TH-cam. Big heart.
After your review......I want one! I scheduled a test drive and want to experience one for myself! Thanks!
You'll love it! If it's too small for you, the series before this, the NC which I own, is a little roomier all around and still a blast to drive. They made a huge comeback as a favorite for track drivers racing on weekends! 😎🤘
Sarah - one of your best reviews. Nice to see someone still building manuals in sports cars! And yes those shoes are cute!
I still like how every braking test is a surprise :D
MX5s brake very well, even from stock due to their light weight
trepidation - noun - "the look on Sarah's face just prior to the braking test."
I’ve owned an NC and now a 2023 ND. Fantastic review that is absolutely right on the mark. I was fortunate enough to drive a prototype in 1989!
It’s a shame that Mazda no longer offers this in British Racing Green with a tan interior. That’s a classic roadster color combo.
Kinda biased since I bought one, but I much rather prefer the Emerald Mica over the BRG with the tan interior.
@@TheReal_JG My Highland Green Mica/Tan roof ( 2007 ) still turns heads!
I love my ND2 Club RF! Your feedback is on point and is my favorite vehicle I have owned. I installed coilovers and it is a beast on the twisties! Keep up the great work!
11 inch Sway bar. I love your measuring techniques is going to make any mad in your life. Very happy……. LMAO
LUV YA……
Remembering when the Miata first came out, it was said to have the DNA of a Lotus. Yep. Always wanted one of these little beasties.
Great review! Nice reverence for Iconic cars... leave perfection alone... just keep making 'em!
Our Fiat 124 is still running great at 95000 miles, but maybe we should get a MX5 before they stop making them as well. Great job as usual on the review. Still waiting on that PO box number to send you a thankyou for all your hard work.
I don’t have a P.O. Box, and have no plans to get one again, Sorry
I’ve had one of these and it’s everything you’ve just described, my wife loved driving it.
You should review every car made, the level of detail is fantastic.
Sarah, love your work, total respect. "An 11" rear sway bar"!! Bloody Imperial/Metric complications 😉❤️❤️
Mazda Miata...the OG of driving engagement and enthusiasm!
Awesome review Sarah.
Great that Mazda didn't feel the need to put 21" wheels on this. And no exotic brake calipers!
Can't wait to watch at 5pm tonight. That's my Sarah-hour.
Great idea!
LOVE MY 2012 MX5!!!! Best car I ever drove!!
Not only that, but the tan interior you can only get on a white or grey car. What about black and tan or blue and tan?
Debuted in 1989 ✅
@@mikea69vette65 yeah my recollection over 30 years is fuzzy 😊
@@bridgecross 🤣💪🏻
Yesterday I saw an old girl in a red MK1 Miata with popped up headlights on our German Autobahn! That was true style!

I love how you are so smart aa to call them dampers instead of shocks
Yes, and to also not call them "dampeners".
I've owned 2 Miatas, really need another. They're so much fun and pure.
Also, hey Mazda, how about some actual fun colors. We've got red and 50 shades of dental office waiting room. You can do better.
The MX-5 is no joke. One of the greatest affordable cars ever made, and the most enjoyable of them all.
Merci encore pour tes vidéos très bien faites 🤗👏
I have just bought an 04 Mazdaspeed here in Australia...love it!
Color pallette availability is fine, Soul Crystal Red is the only color a Mazda should be anyway
Another great review. This seems to be one of the highest overall review scores. Well deserved. Light, simple, easy to maintain, priced fairly and fun to drive.
