    Heads up for beginners: If your "Armature" menu doesn't have the same content as listed at 1:50, you may need to enable the "Rigify" add-on. It is located in Edit>Preferences>Add-ons

    Well, one thing we can do (lazy) alternative. Just draw a full bone from one end to the another and subdivide it in the edit mode. That will work nicely and the cuts will be even across the bone. Useful in this snake example, and may be even in spines of out very own human bones. Try it out

  • @Uradamus
    @Uradamus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    You can also subdivide bones. So an easier way to do the long snake setup would be to make one big bone along the full length, then hit w > subdivide and up the number of cuts to however many bones you'd like - 1 (so if you wanted say 4 bones, set the cuts to 3).
    In this particular case, you can also consider switching to b-bone type in the Viewport Display section of the Armature tab and then up the number of segments in the Bendy Bones section of the Bone tab in order to get smoother interpolated bends. Unfortunately you need to set each bone's segment count individually. But you can avoid this by changing the display type and segment count before subdividing in the manner I described above. Then each new bone from the subdivision will inherit the segment value of the original bone.

    • @grabbitt
      @grabbitt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that's a very good point. I'd kind of forgotten about that as I wanted to show the relationships of bones to bones and how you have to parent and things :) I also need to look into bendy bones a lot more :)

    a great intro - nice and clear. two points that confused me intitally: First, I couldn't see the bone names in the dope sheet until I clicked on "Action Editor" (dropdown in dope sheet, upper left). Second, I couldn't attach mesh to bones because I wasn't selecting BOTH the mesh and the bones (I was selecting mesh, then clicking on bones). Still, a very well done tutorial . Thank you.

    Fab 2.8 Tutorials as were your much earlier ones. Learnt most of what I know from your excellent clear and well paced instruction.
    Love this latest radical 2.8 upgrade. So more logical and easy to follow.
    I had hoped 2.8 would work better with 'Automatic Weights' but unfortunately there is still the issue of bones breaking through skin.
    After following your careful instruction still this problem occurs - so frustrating!
    Keep up the good work.

So I ve been skipping around. But I'm writing notes down in my word pad in order starting to make more sense. I even slow down the youtube video to be able to do that. So your say every time I move a bone I click onto the keyframe. Thank you for getting back to me fast.

    My Dope Sheet window isn't showing the area to the left with the Dope Sheet Summary, Armature, ArmatureAction, etc. channels. How do I make that show?

      I got it: I selected the Dope Sheet icon in the small, left-hand dropdown, then selected Dope Sheet again in the right dropdown. Now the channels show up, but the dropdowns look the same as before...so I don't know exactly what happened.

    if when you press alt+R to clear the pose rotations and it doesnt work....if you are nvidia user, you need to go into geforce settings and toggle to turn off the on-screen overlay (green toggle under settings)

    Great video but I'm very confused by what about the subdivision modifier is. It came up kind of out of the blue in this video and I don't recall it being mentioned in any of the previous tutorials. What does that thing do exactly?

      it subdivides your mesh as a modifier so non destructively. Definitely worth looking up as it's used all the time in modelling

    Howdy from Dallas, Texas! Great video Grant, thanks for the tutorial.
    Quick Question: Why would you want to delete the unused scale key-frames if they do nothing? Is it for file size or something like that?
