    Not bad! One small point - weight painting is vertex based, so knowing that makes it a little easier. With the main body being a cube - all you gotta do is aim for the corners. 😃

    • @crustydabbs

      He wanted to cut corners....Don't be a square. XD

    • @TheInnerWorlds
      @TheInnerWorlds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For something like this, I'd just select the entire cube in weight paint and hit shift + k to just paint the whole thing. Covers all surfaces of the faces selected with bleeding over so the mesh doesn't have speration during movements

    • @popwwrestling3940
      @popwwrestling3940 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheInnerWorlds i did this the following way with weight painting so the square streched and squashed. I gave eash bone a bit of the square. Like the shoulder blades moved the top part of the square and the hips the lower while the spine bone moved the middle part. I tried painting the whole square but I found during the animation it was lacking the strecth and squash i liked.

      This video is a bit older but for amatuer not outdated yet!
      Weight painting is to cover vertices with weights. But if you want to cover the whole cube with weight of 1.0 just selct its vertices in edit mode, goto data tab, choose the right vertex group, adjust the weight factor to 1.0 and ASSIGN.
      No need to mess around with painting, brush sizes and so on ...

    Hi, great video but one question. At 5:28 when you're extruding from the spine, you're extruding from the head. Unless I'm missing something, the extruded bone is not parented in the same way the arms bones are. I know that's because heads can't parent heads. As a result when I move the spine around it doesn't effect the hip. My question is why doesn't yours have that issue? Thanks for the help!

    Thank you this got me going! The auto-weights for me were the hardest part. They were going nutso. It was one of 2 things I think. A) I did not have the transforms applied on the CubeMan mesh prior to parenting the rig. B) I had a lot of overlap in the arms/legs and the main body. Apparently that causes issues with auto-weighting according to this one lone post I read somewhere.

    Hey , thank you so much, the video is amazing. I just have one error. At time stamp 8:42, when you move the spine bone and all the bones move with it, even the ones extruded from it's lower vertex, mine only move the top bone ( The arm bones shoulder.l, upperarm.l, lowerar.l and its symmetry.r ) The lower part does not get affected. I have done some research and it says that, when you use an armature in blender, the top vertex extrudes bones that become a child to the parent bone but from the bottom vertex, it extrudes a new bone separate from the parent bone. Is there something that you did, that allowed the extrusion of the hip.l and its symmetry.r bone be connected to the one of the spine?

    With the newer version of blender, the hip wont connect to the spine, thus the upper body separates. The bones have changed so that you can only extrude from the tip of the bone, and not the root (the connection between hip and upper leg). To correct this, (edit mode), select upper leg, then (shift) select the spine bone. Ctrl P. to parent and keep offset. Repeat for other leg.

If you can't do that for loop cuts, you can try just creating the loop cut, then the bottom left corner on the screen manually change the number of cuts before you click off because after you click off that option disappears and you have to restart and create a new loop cut again to see that menu

      @@bleachedsmiles5570 hmm try to search loop cuts on youtube and you should see in depth vids showing how those work, not sure why your blender isn't showing the other options so hard to know the issue

    • @bleachedsmiles5570
      @bleachedsmiles5570 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poly_flo I found out what the problem was. I must have just selected ‘cube man’ whilst in edit…I found I needed to go back to object mode first - select ‘cube man’…then go into edit. Then I had all the options available and was able to make the loop cuts as you did in the video.
      Now the only persistent problem I have is for some reason mirroring doesn’t work. when I’ve an arm selected, add mirror, click on the icon and the click the cube body, nothing happens.
      Yet if I click on the arm I’ve selected it creates another arm by the side of it - very odd.
      Also, for some reason symmetrise isn’t working right for me. I label all my bones. Selected all of them with A. Hit symmetrise and it creates the opposite side…only it always places it over the side I already have. It labels everything correctly (replacing left with right) but just overlays my left set of ‘bones’…so I have to manually move them.

      @@bleachedsmiles5570 hmm for the symmetrize one maybe reset your transforms first and then try it because maybe the angle or rotation is off and that might affect it. Also, just confirm your naminng is leg.l so the .l after is the important part you can name it whatever you want but as long as you have it .l after

    I added amature and mesh as automatic weights in blender. then i made some poses in pose mode. but when i click somewhere else after selecting the mesh, the mesh comes into its initial position. how can i avoid that ?

  • @DotJus

    At 10:29 I did not get the Insert Keyframe Menu. I had accidentally turned on automatic keying set. To turn this off click "Keying" drop down menu at the top of the playback window (to the right of the clock icon) and clear Active Keying Set.

    When I tried mine, the arm didn’t stay like It was supposed to. I put an arm into 3/3 and moved the one to the right but the entire arm moved leaving the bones behind. It started breaking and twisting and I have 0 clue what option alt r alt means so I couldn’t reset the character and now I have to redo It for the 4th time

    • @poly_flo
      @poly_flo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      try watching my newer video with the red guy in the thumbnail, that might be easier to follow. Also, to reset the pose, you have to be in pose mode first, then select all of the mesh by pressing "a", then press "alt r" to reset rotations and "alt g" for movement

    Quick tip to those who found that Alt + R doesn't work. It probably has to do with your Nvidia Overlay taking over that command. Go to Geforce experience -> Settings -> Turn off overlay. Or, if you still want the overlay, edit the hotkeys and replace Alt + R hotkey with, say, for example, Alt + P. This should now work.

      Probably your leg bone is not connected to the spinal bone. In edit mode try click leg bone and shift click spinal bone then press Ctrl + P, choose "Keep Offset", the leg bone thus be the child of the spinal bone
