Can we glam up this desk with metallic paint? |

  • This desk furniture flip proved to be a little more involved than I thought it would be. It was a custom for a local client. She wanted it painted metallic which I thought was fun! She messaged me the morning she was going to have it dropped off and said, “In the light, it looks SO bad! I’m not sure it can be fixed.” I thought, “It can’t be that bad…” But it was. Her ex had refinished it a few years ago and there were bubbles in the topcoat over the entire body of the piece. Every drawer, every spindle. I told her we would make it pretty.
After lots of sanding, repairs, priming and painting, I think we got there. What do you think?

This really is beautiful! But you didn’t know what you were getting into. As always, it turned out gorgeous and I thank you for the tutorial. More knowledge , what to avoid! 🤣🤣🤣🙌🏻

I have used metallic paint, a few times. First was over a beautiful desk I did a few years ago. Painted it on with a brush over a dove gray paint. It was a stunning desk. Also used it for a client's arched wine cabinet. Did a gold in the back of cabinet to lighten it up. You are so brave. Don't think I will put in my sprayer. Afraid i would clog it up.

It was thick! Even though it said it could be sprayed, I definitely don’t think that’s the best application.

"Luminous" is a good word. That's really cute. Is that desk one of those modular pieces of bedroom furniture we used to see in the Sears catalog in the 1960s and 1970s? Rustic pine for boys, "French Provincial" white for girls...

Thanks Marilyn! I was a little stressed for a minute when I saw how textured it was. It took me a minute to figure out how to smooth it out. 😰

I haven’t used the metallic paint and after watching how fussy it was to work with I’m a little hesitant to try. But, maybe I’ll try on a small piece first. The desk came out beautiful, looks like a pearl. And the hardware absolutely compliments it so nicely. Once again- you nailed it!!! I love your videos, and always look forward to seeing a new one posted. ❤

Aw, thanks Michele! It’s definitely pearl like. I think I would do it again. Maybe in a darker color 🤔

I use metallic paint in a spray can it can go on plastic, metal and wood which I have used on all 3 surfaces. My favorite is Rust-Oleum Universal Paint & Primer Spray Paint, Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze. Last thing I painted was my old cedar outside wood slate like park bench with a back and side arms. It was heavily used in its natural wood state inside and then outside it was looking rough so cleaned it up sanded it smooth and sprayed it with the bronze it went on beautifully and is in the entry so we can take off our barn rubber boots! Also have a covered front porch with can lights that had plastic rims and used the same Metallic bronze. I was a picture/art framer for 20 + yrs and when the metal frame samples were discontinued I saved them and put two samples with the same profiles together which made small frames I painted with such spray paint which I used for the horticultural building in our county that I volunteered for over 30 years so much so that they named the horticulture building after me! I ran the entire open class of our county fair and also volunteered as the treasurer for our county 4-H… we had a great team and took our 4-H out of the red with a program we developed that we won awards from the national 4-H. So there has been some great paint in spray cans that I really have gotten great results from. Oh I even painted some light fixtures in the house and some floor return air vent metal covers. I used the metallic model paint for several projects. One was a peacock on wood I gave to my sister. But not too much with metallic paints like what you used
But the piece came out really wonderful and you did a great job figuring how best to get the paint on there… you definitely have reliable problem solving skills that serve you very well!

I’ve not used spray can paint on furniture, but I know people have with great success .

@@ivylaneinteriors I never did but the old bench has seen better days. And I had tried with some darker enamel paint but it just looked like a dumpster candidate. Looked over what I had at home and thought if it still has the ugliest it could go outside! So sanded best I could all those slats tightened the screws put wood plugs over the visible screws and sprayed away. It went on very well & even . And it went a long ways as well. I had a partial can that I was maybe a third full and that did a third coat on seat face, side arms and legs but not the back of bench as it is against the wall in the entry. It did a good job of hiding the dogs teeth marks in the leg and abuse it got when it ended up outdoors. Not sure I could use it on furniture. But we have a lot of old stuff. Mostly stained.

I know what happened with the top cost he shook the top coat instead of stirring causing bubbles !!!! You should always stir your paint and top coat . That prevents bubbles .

    Hola Lisa:
He pintado con oro, plata y cobre.
