    So glad I found this! I have almost an identical desk that was my great grandmothers who lived to be 110. She’s been passed for about 15 to 20 years now. I’ve been wanting to redo it for years but have never done one. I may have to do some wood filler too. I can’t wait to finish watching this

    Amazing to find such a secret beneath the grime. I would never have dared use black but it’s really nice, it makes the top really shine. Thank you for the inspiration and great information.

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! There is a time and place for black paint, and this was one of those times and places :) black works well to hide imperfections. In the art world black makes things disappear into the background. That is why i chose black for this project. The drawers were in rough shape and black helps camouflage their imperfections

    • @lynnwittet1301
      @lynnwittet1301 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a piano secretary desk that is from the late 1890's to the early 1900's. Owners were my great aunt, my grandmother, and then my mothers. I've had it since 1973 and I'm 71 at this time. It is black and gorgeous! But has a huge water stain on the pullout part inside the desk. I haven't attempted anything on it, am rather afraid to. So many beautiful scrolls and intricate details on the desk! But I've been trying chalk paint and such for the past couple of years and now am thinking it's time to attempt this. I believe it is mahogany. Oh boy! Thanks for sharing your video.

    That is a gorgeous piece, you really resurrected this desk from the junk pile for sure. One tip I’ve seen used and I’ve found effective, is to put the hardware into a crockpot filled with water for a couple of hours. The finish will simply fall off making it a labor saving device 👍

    • @DesertDIY

    It’s really incredible. Your work is amazing.
    These big desks have been rendered useless by computers. My friend turned one into a kitchen island.

      That is so cool! Thank you Minda! I think right now many people are moving towards homeschooling or online schooling so a big desk like this could fit two kids on it. One on each side ;)

      I have two in online elementary school and a two sided desk would be great for them to do art, writing, math, or science together.

    Hello sunshine. I own a similar piece and have wanted to paint my black. So I smiled when you mentioned this. 😊 It gave me an idea of how it will look. You lucked out however with the gorgeous red inlay. WOW! Stunning is right. Thanks so much. 😊🙏🇨🇦

    Yes I think you have the right time line. My Grsndma got a new sewing desk in the early 60s. It looks just the same as hers.

      Thank you Tudy! Without a maker's mark or date stamp its hard to accurately date these type of desks because they were made for such a long span of time and in so many different styles.

    I picked one similar to this up at our local spring clean-up, I'm going to use it the lower cabinets in the kitchen of my tiny house when I get to that point. The top of mine looks like that but where has the Heart wood mine has African Black Wood, I'm going to take the top off and build a butcherblock type top for the desk and use the top to build a eat on peninsula since I will be living in a tiny house and there's room for a table. The top is just too gorgeous not to show off and make a statement piece.

    W O W!! She is GORGEOUS!! The surprise inlay is just stunning and you are correct re red heart wood, it is a rare breed found in mostly South America (it can be found in some parts of Central America too, but mostly SA). My husband buys exotic woods (from a place that sells bundles on sale) and has bought some before. Anyway, amazing transformation, Cory!💜
