      I think it was the M1 that’s was a mistake, Apple realised there was no incentive to get models higher than base for most people so created a reason with the m2 and put that “wrong” right. Bold move though…thanks to Apple for making my base m1 more valuable 😂👍

      I would like to see battery life and power use differences between the 8GB / 256 and the 16GB / 512. Having more silicon powered up has to have some effect, yet I have not found anyone doing those comparisons.

      Spot on.
      That is Apple’s strategy inducing you to buy more expensive product.
      Similar example w/ similar strategy is iPad air and iPad pro.
      Similar example w/ different strategy is the education discount where Apple knows but close eyes on people who disguise as students, in hopes for them to spend more money with more purchasing power thanks to the discount.

    The core logic took a miss in this one, as storage should have been kept constant for a RAM comparison video (due to ssd speed variations from apple across 256 & 512)
    Are the difference due to ssd or RAM? It’s hard to figure..
    Still this is a much information video & pretty helpful!

I don't want to spend an extra $200 for an extra low-quality 256g SSD. Also, if I choose 16+512g, the price would be really close to the m1 pro 14, it also makes me very confused.

      a basic mistake many people make is its about free memory that the apps have to play with so as a calc. example (and not that weird since unix including osx likes caches). You need 4G to run the OS and caches, backup and other things its doing. Now if you have a 8G model you have 4G left... If you get the 16G model it still needs that basic 4G. so now you have 12Gig left. So thats 4G 'play room for heavy app' vs 12G 'playroom for heavy app' ... 3x the free space. The step to 24G will mean 20G vs 12G free and is more linear as you can see... Given the slow ssd disks (depends on chips 1,2 or 4 depending on M1 chip/memory) 1400,2600 or 5200 speeds effects swapping a lot but only if the machine is forced into swapping with 8 Gig that will happen quickly (as shown) with 24Gig or more it really depends on your app and it and how often it needs to swap out and swap in parts.

    So what it looks like is apple realized the m1 8gb base models were too powerful..that people felt no need to upgrade to 16gb ram..so now they are making a more significant gap between 8gb and 16gb ram so people will upgrade.. but making a gap meant downgrading the 8gb model ..so apple can get more money pretty much..i could be wrong

    • @jeanjasinczuk7543
      @jeanjasinczuk7543 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't believe Apple conspired to make it slower. It just a cost cutting measure, having a single SSD module make it a little bit cheaper to produce. And Apple think most people would not care much. Overall, I still agree that this M2 base MacPro should not be called Pro. Apple should also sell a 16GB, 512 MB pre configured. Resellers often discount pre configured models, Apple almost never discount customized build.

    • @zeniktorres4320
      @zeniktorres4320 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Love your guys videos and watch all your Mac comparisons, but your programming benchmark is useless for RAM pressure. The linking phase is the one that creates all the memory pressure, so you need a project that links very large libraries to saturate memory. Building the clang compiler is an excellent large open source project that is easy to build and creates a ton of memory pressure. You could also build Chromium like LTT does, but it would be cool to do something different.

    My question is, would you get an 8GB 1TB model or 16GB 512GB model for the same price for basic consumption and gaming like Civ V? The base model in this test uses the slow storage so I don't understand if the Memory Swap on an 8GB 1TB will still deliver the same performance?

    This video was the deciding factor for me settling for an 8GB memory on my new MacBook Pro or rightfully shelling-out and upgrading to 16GB. Thank you!

    Hi, It is a good video thank you. I have a question.
    what do you think, which is sensible M2 Macbook pro 13" 512ssd 8gb RAM OR M2 Macbook Air 256 ssd 16gb RAM for future and daily using? (The prices are same)

    I’d like to see the 16gb/512gb m2 mbp vs the base mbp 14” to compare the chips

    Did you try to restart the 8G? That can not be normal. My M1 sometimes slow down and need a restart.

    Great stuff by you. Love your videos and the way you are testing in real world scenarios.
    It is clear that there is no match between 256/8 vs 512/16 versions. Can we know how 256/16 M2 will perform against 512/16 M2 version and 512/16 M1 Pro version.

    dang I didn't know the performance was that bad. For the price it makes sense to get a discounted m1 air over this, or get the 16gb version of these. I guess that means for the new m2 air getting the 8gb version will be slow too.

    As much as I'd like to buy an upgraded version with 16GB and 512 SSD to have a nice performance, it doesn't make any sens at all to me. It would be way more reasonable to go straight to Pro 14 for literally the same price 🤯. The preferable spec would be basic Air with 16GB + SSD 256GB but question is how does this perform 🤔 Apple really messed it up...

    • @drakata27
      @drakata27 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I expect even worse performance from the air no matter how cool it looks with the new midnight colour

    • @MissionControlTet

      Apple didn’t mess things up, it works well according to the plan to *force* buyers upgrade if they don’t want their M2 slower than the M1.
