      I used a video I found online that discussed it before I did this job. Yeah - you can easily fuss around for hours getting hung up on silly stuff if you miss a trick. Been there done that. Robert's videos are extremely helpful.

    Great video on how to do the job. I would only suggest using a large sheet of cardboard to put the sump bolts into as they are removed, that way you can't accidentally knock them over and mix them up.

    Robert....a good way to clean the pan and the underside of the engine is to use oven cleaner and then follow that up with a final wash of kerosene and/or brake cleaner. The oven cleaner will immediately dissolve ALL of the sludge and golden stain on the block, crank, etc. caused by the oil. The oven cleaner WILL discolor the aluminum so I paint the outside of the pan with black rocker guard paint. However, the oil pickup tube will literally look brand new as the oven cleaner does not discolor steel. When painted with the rocker guard paint, the pan looks great and resembles an ABS plastic pan. The "leap of faith" aspect of the oven cleaner is that I also use a garden hose with a sprayer end to thoroughly wash off the oven cleaner....even douching the inside of the block, crank, rods, etc.. To minimize the surface rust that will form on the rods and cylinder sleeves, I spray everything down with PB Blaster. I then ultimately fill with dino oil, run the engine for about 15 minutes without a load (idle and some throttle revs) to circulate and emulsify any remaining water, oven cleaner residue and PB Blaster. Then a final synthetic oil change and filter completes the job. Let me know if you want me to email you photos. It's pretty impressive as respects the super clean result.

    I did this job on my 1998 S70 - I find it interesting that everything looks similar - the lines that have to be pulled out of the way, the bracket that needs to be bent slightly. Raising the engine a bit. All the same. Yes, the sealant goes on the pan, not the block. You couldn't get it on the block very easily with a roller. Age is fine for the sealant, as long as there is air in the tube. I also was concerned about the round seals staying in place - I used something sticky can't recall what.

    Hey Robert It seems I may be in trouble with my 98 GLT 2.4 s70 as I’m not able to find any replacement oil pan, I heard I can use an oil pan from any model 850 from 93-97 and any S70/V70/orC70 model from 98 but I can’t find any pans for those either. I’ve tried every scrap yard in town and around, is there anything you’d recommend doing?

      That helps oil pressure. If oil pressure is good, you may be ok. I believe that seal is critical to the oil circulation. Without it, the engine will wear out fast.

    Around some Marvel mystery oil through it, and change the oil and oil filter. Now I’m hearing a different kind of tapping coming from inside the oil pan. It looks like it would be easy to drop the oil pan, but after I watched you I’m wondering, was there an XC 90 you were working on? Or a car?

    Hey Robert, thank you very much for this informative video! I just replaced the PCV on my 2001 V70 II with 300.000km on it) and saw that the bottom hole/channel was full of this kind of yellow sludge mixed with black hardened oil particles. I guess I need to remove the oil pan, too. But can I reach into this bottom channel to clean it completely from below? I tried to brush it out from the outside (old PCV casing removed) (using a vacuum cleaner trying to prevent that hardened oil parts to fall into the pan, but I really do not know if I got all of the sludge out till the bottom because the wirebrush did not reach as far or was blocked somehow.

    • @donmoore7785
      @donmoore7785 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It can be tricky because the pickup has to go in at the right angle or it gets hung up. If this happens to someone, just hang in there, be patient, and try different angles of raising the pan to the block. You may have noticed it got hung up when dropping the pan until you got it at the right angle. At Robert says - it came off, so it WILL go back on. It can be a little nerve racking, but remember there is no rush since the sealant will not cure until there is no air (until it is against the block).
