Thanks for the great video Robert, I would not have been able to do the job without your detailed instructions. . My son recently purchased a low mileage (105,000km) 1997 850 GLT. The car had no service history and with the help of your videos I am helping him sort out the car and update all the maintenance. It took 4 hours to do this job the first time with a rebuilt alternator ($150). I choose a rebuilt because the cost of just the regulator was almost $100 once shipping was factored in. However the rebuilt proved to be faulty and I had to do the job again (this time only 3 hours). I did not have a 3/4" ratchet so l cut the curved end of a flat pry bar to about 1" wide to use on the tensioner. Worked perfectly. Thanks again from Canada!!

Hi, Robert. I really enjoy your videos, they have helped me a lot with my '99 Volvo V70 GLT. I taught myself how to work on cars years ago with my '72 Toyota Corolla and this volvo has been a nightmare because of it's dishonest previous owner. I love the feel of the car though and feel safe in it as well. Recently had a freak accident on the freeway part of a semi-truck smoke stack run over by another semi and flung sideways and into the sir right in front of my car. It literally slowed me down really fast and ever since has not been running like it used to. I stopped as there were other people who had encountered the various smoke stack parts, and the stae patrol officer called in road debris damage. I took it to a place recommended by my insurance but ai know they didn't check everything that I told them was not right since the accident. I did discover a horrible noise, like metal on metal, my firewall shield is literally not attached right and wasn't like that before. Makes a horrible racket, and the car didn't seem to have the power it had before, now I have a PO300 code with check engine light. The car runs okay, still not as much power, but am goping to pull the plug boots one at a time to check them tomorrow. When the accident occured it literally felt like an explosion and the bent smole stack kept moving but I think it may have affected the engine and popped the firewal shield lkoose as well, or else someone removed it and didn't put it back right. Anyway, seeing some of this on the video has helped me a lot. I will let you knoow how it goes. Davienne Gordon

Although I have a V70, your description of the main relay confirmed my suspicion on my starting problem. My main relay is in the oval box next to the normal fusebox, but I am now pretty sure it's my problem. And I always wondered where the temperature sensor is, now I know that too. ;) Greets from the Netherlands !

Robert, you outdid yourself! I got notice of this and watched it 2X, the second time pausing it about every 30 sec to take more notes!!! I can't thank you enough!!!! I also wonder how my car is still running at all after all the things I learned I am supposed to do/change more often, and now I've got a bunch of questions, but some can wait until spring!! However, just this evening, I was checking my oil. I changed it 3 drives ago, and used syntheitic this time. When I pulled the dipstick, there was that foamy stuff that looked like oily sawdust in the tube for the dip stick. I've never seen that before and it worried me. Does changing from reg to synthetic have anything to do with that in my case? Or does that indicate something else? Again, thank you. I learned so much and once more, watching your vid has saved me from making some costly mistakes.
More than likely the foamy stuff is just because the motor is sweating a little more due to the cold weather. A 30 minute drive should clear that up. I hope your PCV system is in good health?

All your videos are very informative. Sometimes I just don't know where to look for information. I'm having an EVAP error PO455 on my 99 V70 2.4L turbo XC and don't know where the valve is located. I've replaced fuel cap and did a quick check of tubes but error came back. I have an electric valve that is hooked to the air cleaner box that has three rubber hoses no clue what that is. In some videos I hear of a Purge valve and a Vent valve, do I have both?? If so where are they? Thanks for any help. Jon S.

That is the TCV, Turbo Control Valve.
Hey Rob. I just got a Volvo 850 94 and I found a broken black "exhaust" line that seems to emit exhaust and connect to nothing else. This line 8s behind the fuel injection pipe

We got the MAF from Bosch, it is stamped on the filter. Volvo scanned it and that’s what they wanted to replace. We live in the south so I guess that hose isn’t that important then. My husband says that he had trouble getting the car to start at lunchtime, what else could be wrong?
If you don't have any codes, probably the fuel pump is going bad.

Robert! I have finally found traces of oil that is very concerning to me. I have found a very decent amount inside the intercooler hose from the radiator to the throttle body. Does this mean my turbo is going out?
Probably not. The system is designed to pull oil vapors into the PCV system which is then sucked into the turbo pressure tubing.
Robert, love your vids, really helpful. Question: On the driver side of our 2000 S70 sedan, behind the headlight there is an unplugged wiring harness. Can't seem to find the other connection. Everything works, lights, radio, fan, etc. Any idea what this would be for and where the other connector would be?
OK, let me guess, hood latch...headlight wiper...fog light???

It is an electrical connector right behind the driver side headlight, stems out from a thick electrical connection. Could it be for the fan? Sorry for bothering you about this. It seems like there are two blank adapters right above the headlight (interior - above driver side and passenger side) and I think, not positive, but they may be adapters in the event fog lights need a connection? I just finished watching your Volvo engine parts video but it didn’t answer my question. There is a silver metal accordion hose of some type that is near the firewall of my s70 and looks like it goes to someplace under the MAF and the air filter box to the lower part of the engine block. It has a number of breaks in it and since I just had the car in for service at Volvo I’m wondering why they wouldn’t fix it and is it necessary? My guess is yes or it wouldn’t be there. Can you tell me what it is for and what part I can get to fix it? My husband and I just replaced the MAF by ourselves since the dealer wanted over 600 to do it. The car still seems to be running a little rough, are there other things we might do to smooth out the idle? Thanks for any input.
Have you scanned it for codes?
Where did you get the MAF?
That hose is really not that important. It's missing on most non-turbo cars. It connects from the exhaust heat shield to the lower opening on the air filter box. The air box pulls air from that tube and helps the engine get warm air when first started in the morning.

I have been troubled finding the grounds for the ECU. Apparently there is one near the drivers side headlight and another one or two under the intake manifold. Do you know where these are located. Cant seen to be able to find them.

@@RobertDIY You are very right sorry Robert. I own a 1998 v70 R AWD automatic. My ECU is reading 7-9 volts over the scangauge whilest my multimeter is measuring 14.1 volts along battery. Battery, alternator, batterycables have been replaced and checked. All well.Assuming the ECU's own ground must be at fault. Cant seen to locate the little buggers though. All help very welcome.
I figured it out Robert. It was a earth point under the dash just above the rightside kickpanel. 10mm, took 3 minutes total.

I live in the phillippines looking at a 97 850GLE TO BUY. TOOK OIL. CAP OFF AFTER DRIVING AR FOR 20 MINUTES let it idle had blowby you could easily see. Also, the overflow tank was boiling hot could not cap off, water boiling hot. Would this indicate a bad head gaske? Also heater core was leaking water while it was idling. Think I should just pass on buying this car I would no money to do head gasket job. The boiling water in overflow tank is my main concern. Please reply Robert! Thankyou. What would the hose be called, that runs from the radiator to the turbo and to the intake manifold? On a 2000 Volvo S70 GLT 2.4. Mine is split, and I am wondering if that could be causing my power loss, and positive crankcase pressure?

@@RobertDIY, I think I mistook where they run actually... It runs to the turbo intake tube, to the intake minifold... and down alongside the radiator, to the charcoal filter! I unplugged the sensor that is attached to it, and it threw an evaporative code P0443 Evaporative emission system purge control valve circuit. I guess it is vacuum lines.
Is the PCV system working properly?
@@RobertDIY, no actually... After watching your videos, I tore it apart and found a fallen apart coupler at the base of the breather box. And oil thrown all over the side of the engine! It was also clogged up a little. I know you recommend replacing the PCV system instead of cleaning it, but my system was totally soft and pliable, and in good condition. Plus I am rebuilding the car as a project, and am not driving daily. So I have a lot of time and options on my hands. Thanks again!

a combination of a bad thermostat and bad mass airflow sensor was making my 850 run rich

if the transmission is shifting hard is that potentially because of the radiator or is that a different problem?
What type of car do you have and what gears is it shifting hard it?
850 turbo and all of them but going into reverse is worst. Strange thing though is it shifts a little better if i press the gas right before it shifts.
Have you done a fluid change? If not, I would do that ASAP.
Also, check your mounts.

I have a 96 960 volvnot turbo, got new reservoir, radiator, thermostat, water pump, then a hose busted on a box thing near the heater core, cant figure out exactly what the part is. Its to the right of heater core amd the hose that blew had a plastic piece in it that broke. Any idea what part im talkkng about. It has something to do w water system cuz i lost all coolant.
Ouch! Not sure what you are referring to. Find a parts diagram and you should be able to figure it out.

Ok so theirs some wires one from the negative side and one from under the air box and battery tray .... Where are those supposed to connect one wire area connecter peace has numbers saying codes 1 codes 2 codes 3 codes 4 all in Roman numeral numbers what is that wire and where do I connect it ... It seems like my cars been over heating ever since I disconnected it accidently and idk where it goes at all

So my 98 s70 turbo. Still getting something mixed in the tranny fluid. Looks chocolate milk. Drained and replaced tranny fluid 3 times already.
When driving for about 10 mins or so, cannot accelerate or change gears. Even in mid motion. Unless shut off the car and restart minutes later. Then repeats.
Already replaced radiator as well.coolant still new. Oil still new. Fan kicks on for ac. For heater im not quite sure yet. But never had overheating problem. No exterior leaks. HELP ME PLEASE

Thnak you Robert, for your excellent videos. Can you please do a video on the flame trap. Where it is and how to clean it?
I'm pretty sure I cover it in this video, within the first 10 minutes. If you follow your intake tube from your air box to your throttle body, it is near the base of the tube on the back side. You can pull a hose off of it and turn it a little to get it to come out of the tube. Then you can take the parts apart and replace the plastic flame trap.

Is this a part of routine maintenance, cleaning flame trap? How important is it to clean, and is it more important than cleaning throttle body?
I am looking for the Inlet Radiator hose on my 1998 Volvo s70 non turbo... I can see 2 smaller line going into the radiator on drivers side and delis it is the bigger 3" hose. I am pretty sure it's the top hose of the 2 smaller hoses I just explained, but they then turn into crimped metal lines so I started second guessing. Anyone help me out?
You should have an upper and lower radiator hose.

You should have the codes read for an error in the system. If you are in the USA, most auto parts stores will do it for free. Other than that, try this: Volvo 850, S70, V70 Fuel Pump Relay Location and Test - Auto Repair Series

Not sure which Volvo you have. You can follow the exhaust down from manifold. One before and behind (or in) the cat.
