  • How I fitted a Walbro 255 Fuel Pump to my JDM Subaru Forester STi. The install procedure is the same for Subaru Impreza WRX and Impreza STi. Unfortunately the Subaru Legacy and HATCH Sti onwards are more complicated.
    I hope you find it useful.
    Bonus points (ie no prize at all) to anyone pointing out what I did wrong and tried to cover up in the video edit ..Its a truly amazing thing how a camera can make you forget something you have done many times ;)

    Just did my own swap with the help of this video. Many thanks for that! Running fine so far. But did notice that the filter sock provided is much smaller than the original. Hope not a big issue, also some of the comments mention fuel starvation on low tank. Will keep an eye and at least I’ll know what it is if it happens.

      Well done 👍
      The smaller sock isn't an issue so long as it sits in the bottom of the fuel tank 👍👍

    Personal preference, and to cause less fuel starvation issues, but I always fit the OEM filter sock as its about 50% bigger than the supplied one and stops you headbutting the steering wheel when you leave a roundabout with 1/4 tank left lol

    I changed out the fuel pump on my Impreza last year as it was making a startlingly loud whine and 'people' told me that's because it was on the way out.
    It was a 'like for like' as the existing one was a Walbro 255 installed as part of the PPP, I also swapped over the supplied 'teabag' too.
    I noticed that the contacts on the fuel sender were a bit worn but ignored that. All re-assembled and everything was ok.
    A few months down the line and I got a CEL, checked diagnostics and it turned out to be a dodgy signal from the fuel sender ....D'OH!!

      Good lesson there. Those plugs, because they are always connected, stretch the pins so can help to squeeze them up a bit to ensure good contact. Good spot and fix 👍

    Hi Duncan, great video. I fitted a walbro 255 pump on my forester xt and now its throwing engine misfire codes. I used the plug and play harness that came with the kit do you think this could be the issue ?

    • @racedynamix
      @racedynamix  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      it's a possibility but very unusual. I have seen lots of issues with some of the hose supplied with some kits

    Should you upgrade the 12v feed directly off battery using a relay?

    • @racedynamix
      @racedynamix  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      for a walbro 255 an upgraded feed isn't needed 👍

    Hi Duncan, just installed my walbro 255, and now it makes about a 3 second 'priming " sound every time now when i turn ignition to accessories before starting. Is this normal?

    Anyway..not bashing walbro...
    But there is plenty other higher flow pump in 340lph region that flows better at high boost and runs quieter than walbro...
    Because in my experience, over time, the walbro will drops fuel pressure in long distance driving (when the walbro becames old/high mileage)
    And tue flow rate at 45~60psi region also not that much better...outflowed by more modern pump design at similar pricing (also obviously quieter and draw less amperage) due different design than heavy metal gerotor type impeller inside of the walbro

    I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't use the walbro fuel sock. They cause problems...

    • @racedynamix
      @racedynamix  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The genuine walbro filter sock is absolutely fine.. It's the fake ones that can cause issues. Just need to make sure the filter sits at the bottom of the tank.. Hence why I use a zip tie 👍

    • @AmirPomen
      @AmirPomen ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually they got the wrong type of filter that sits flat at the bottom of the pump and wasnt fully reach the bottom of the fuel tank...

    Is the fuel temperature sensor on that assembly or is it located somewhere else?

    • @racedynamix
      @racedynamix  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There isn't a fuel temp sensor on most.. At least, I have never seen one on a pre 2007 UK or eu car. Added to say that some usdm 2003/4 ish have them

      @@racedynamix thanks for the quick response, I was finding a lot of talk about it could be causing a no start after it was running and got to temperature, runs awesome just won’t restart, let it cool back down and fires right up, started after changing fuel pump. Changed fuel filter, now since there is no fuel temperature sensor I’m thinking either fuel pressure regulator or possible bad injectors. Thanks again for sharing your expertise, very helpful, awesome channel!!

      @@floydcoppage9423 hmm. If it has a 32but ecu it 'may' have a temp sensor. Looks like a small black nodule with 2 wires.
      As far as problem solving is concerned I would start with the easiest and retrace your steps. So yeah fuel pump assembly would be a good start.
      Next understanding what is getting hot.. engine sensors can do that and I have seen many times when a cam or crank sensor start failing as they heat up or wiring degrades. Really expensive to replace all though so wouldnt recommend it. Was anything else changed ?

  • @ratspeedgarage
    @ratspeedgarage ปีที่แล้ว

    Would you remap after that upgrade?

    • @racedynamix
      @racedynamix  ปีที่แล้ว

      It shouldn't need it.. If the std pump was just a little tired the worst that would happen is it will run a little richer. If it was mapped with a failing pump I would let the owner know that it needs to come back to be made right.
