RT is the best bike just as a motorcycle, that I’ve ever had out of 15+ bikes. It has all, no need to buy accessories. And it is very agile. Waiting for the 1300 with a lighter front maybe.

I'm 28 years old, applying for MD/PhD programs, and I found an outlet through wanting to start riding to get away from the monotony of my studies.
Man, you don't know how much your channel means to me. I absolutely abhor the riding community because it seems like a bunch of egocentric people who are entitled to use the road as they please without regard for the consequences for others. And since it supposedly looks cool, guys on channels perpetuate that mentality because it gets views. Motorcyclists, to me, seemed like a bunch of people who wanted to keep up with a certain self-image instead of the enjoyment of the ride.
But your channel made me enthusiastic because I see myself doing what you do. Enjoying motorcycles because you enjoy them and bringing your family along for a fun time and a bonding experience.
Thanks for being a chill dude and a good inspiration to current and future riders like myself.

I have a 2009 R1200RT that is simply THE bike to ride. Absolutely reliable, fast, comfortable, spacious, a daemon on curvy roads, a joy to ride. This bike puts a smile on my face every single time I ride. And it’s almost 16 years old…

I've wanted an RT since I got to demo a R1200RT and then the R1250RT the following year. This year I picked up an 2024 R1250RT in March. I've owned several bikes and this is by far the best all-arounder. It's my first BMW and so far I love it. Every once in a while I missed the insanity of my KTM 1290 SAS, but that is happening less and less. The RT's power is more than adequate, and it's so much more nimble with the 17" front and rear. Yours and Big Rock Moto's content were a big part of my decision to finally pull the trigger and buy the bike I've wanted for years. It turned over 2k miles today!

Interesting reading your comment because I am considering trading my 1290 SAS for the R1250RT. I love the 'insanity' of the KTM but the bike itself loves visiting the shop.

I bought new in April 2021 so same age as this review. Got just under 20k miles. Some problems. Engine management light came on at around 15k and it turned out to be the exhaust flap, a renowned problem. Fixed under warranty. I utilised a dealer some 250 miles from home for logistical reasons. On the way home, just 45 miles into my journey, I detected a really bad vibration in the front end that turned out to be a wheel bearing. Got recovered and back to dealer and again fixed under warranty. Now got a letter to say shaft drive has to be lubed every 12k miles and replaced (under warranty for life of bike) every 36k miles. Whaaat! That’s not much more than a chain lasts. And the problem doesn’t seem to have been sorted as newer models bought now still have the issue but now it’s not under warranty and must be paid for as a service item (this is my understanding and I may be wrong as to this latter point). Having said which I do like the bike. It’s very comfy, economical, and has an awesome engine. Mind you that TFT navigation is another story……

I purchased a brand new BMW R 1200 RT 132 months ago 11 years in a month I put 63,000 miles on it. It’s been well-maintained. The bike still looks brand new and it has been an awesome motorcycle. It’s only 1170 cc but the bike is fantastic, the reason you pay so much for these bikes is because they are fantastic.
I think that BMW puts more effort into making these bikes look great and perform great. I’ve heard people say that the older bikes are more reliable than the new ones. I don’t know if that’s true or not cause I don’t own a new one not that I wouldn’t like to, but the prices keep going up.☝️

Fantastic is obviously personal. I own two Beemers, a RT and a GS. They are good bikes, but fantastic... There are many engineering short comings, on the RT actually more than on the GS. Simple things, like using different size and type bolts to fix fittings. You can take apart all Japanese bikes with a handfull of tools, if you know one Japanese bike, you know them all. Try that with a Beemer (or an Italian bike for that matter). Beemers also tend to need more maintenance than, as an example, a Honda. Speaking from experience here...

That lead me to buy last year a 2023 R1250RT, it is 9000km now and riding like a queen of tarmac, your review makes me very relieved as I was wondering if the BMW bikes kept the quality standards that I love so much, love everything about this bike (mine is Alpine white), and feels great knowing it is still reliable as before, big thank you brother, greetings from Belgium 🇧🇪!

My 2017 1200RT has just clocked 50k miles and I think it’s just run in. Likely the best bike I’ve had in 40 years of riding. It’s everything I need and never ceases to amaze me. I've just traded my 2016 FJR ES for a new RT, it's going to be about six weeks until it arrives.
After riding the RT back to back with my FJR, I have to say, it really is night and day difference, the RT makes my bike feel like a 600 as it fizzes and vibrates, the RT is just so smooth and far more nimble too. I couldn't stretch to a top box, so it'll have to be my old faithful givi 👍🏻

Had mine in the shop (Bonn BMW) last week for its 40,000km service. I purchased it in May 2021 and likewise have had absolutely no reliability issues with the bike. The driveshaft was checked and BMW confirmed that the driveshaft will be replaced free of charge at 60,000km (which is something I've been aware of for some time). Even after 40,000km it still feels like a treat to ride!

Looked into this bike recently. Was suprised at the horsepower. Hadn't looked at these in years. Was thinking twin boxsters would be like a Harley HP wise, but they are 20 or 30 more ponies and the whopper, 200+ lbs less weight...
    That's a gamechanger.

    Absolutely loved my 1250 RT.
My bike was recently written off (vandalism) and now I'm having to decide would I buy it again or get the 1300 GS?!
Yes I would buy the RT again in a second. Rode it across Canada coast to coast 2 up and it was the perfect tool for the job.
But the GS opens up some off road camping so I'm torn. People also say the GS is very comfortable for road touring.
Wife loves the RT and is very comfortable as passenger so I think that might end up being the deciding factor.. we'll see!

Love my 2023 1250 RT, it is my daily driver in the US and the only thing that sucks about it is the nav system. Mount your cellphone and use that nav, problem solved. Did a 3600 mile road trip in 11 days, never felt wore out or tired at the end of each day, this bike is simply amazing. I bought mine after watching your first video on it, it was the final bit of info I needed to pull the trigger. Thanks for the content.

    Hey Scott,
I wondered what had happened with your RT. I have an April 2021 manufactured bike, which I bought in November 2022 with 4,500miles (7,200 Km approx.) on the clock. Mine had all the 719 stuff: wheels, engine covers and levers, plus the Akrapovic. It also had the radar cruise, but not the radio. I wanted a new one, but since the war had started, BMW were not making to order, only to stock. Their stock bikes were all fully specced (without Option 719) but included the radio. I specifically wanted the radar but without the radio, so the only way to get what I wanted was a second hand bike.
One came in in September 2022 (the one I bought in November). I wasn’t allowed to buy it until November by the Finance Director (the wife) because it was my 60th birthday present and I had promised I’d wait. Anyway, I knew the sales guy from when I bought a new K1200S back in 2006 and he trusted me, and reserved the bike with a nominal deposit of £100. Bikes weren’t really selling in the UK at that point, anyway. The bike I got (you can see it on my channel, where I’ve not posted for over a year (!) RT View From a Pillion. The video is “collection day”.) had been accessorised. On top of the factory fit gear mentioned, the previous owner had added Wunderlich peg lowering, crash bars on engine and cases (I took those off because the look knobby) and what I called the “pizza oven”. The pizza oven is what I call the small top box. I couldn’t fathom why you’d spend all that cash on aftermarket (which the dealer fitted from new) and not buy the top box. I got a 49L Top Box as part of the deal I did on mine.
Option 719 gear is not something that I would have bought because I commute to London in all weathers and I hate washing my bike. However, in Shadow Black, it does look really cool. In all, I paid £19k which was probably about €22k in those days. Mine is Police White, as I like to call it, which doesn’t look as cool as yours, but on the Motorway, it’s great for getting people out of the way when filtering (lane splitting). When I flash my lights in a rhythmic fashion I think many motorists see the blue tinge of the LEDs and think it’s the cops.
I have taken my panniers off, to make filtering easier. Having them off allows you to squeeze through moving gaps at angles easier. If you have the panniers on, you have to filter in straight lines. I do do it with panniers on as it’s easy to judge because they are less wide than the mirrors. If the mirrors fit you can fit. Having the panniers is great for a number of reasons on top of filtering. Firstly, you have less to wash!! Secondly, the bike looks better, more sporty, and lastly, you can get to the rear wheel more easily to wash it or pump air.
I remember you having countless problems with your Connected App and the Navigation. I have had only a few, right at the beginning. I solved the ones at the beginning by putting DND on my phone. I noticed that notifications break the connection. Once I did that and after the update, I have never had a problem with it, and I actually prefer the navigation to Waze etc. It updates the route quickly, if you deviate, and since they added Traffic, it’s really good. So it seems your early production model clearly has a fault…….My early production model came with a fault, a much more serious one.
I was coming back from work one afternoon and approaching a massively busy roundabout with 6 lanes. As I approached, I downshifted, except I only managed to 4th. It felt like there was no gear lever. I looked down and it was still there, just inoperable. I was hoping to pin it to beat the traffic lights, but I decided since the rush hour had just started, it was a very risky option. Long story short, it was a gear box issue. It took BMW around a month to sort it out. Now, if anyone has managed to read this far, here’s a tip. BMW tried palming me off with an F850GS which was terrible. I took it so I could be able to commute because commuting by car to London is a nightmare. BMW’s warranty loan bike should be a bike of equivalent or better than what you have. The local dealer tried telling me the sob story, so I contacted BMW UK. Within 15 minutes of my call, the dealer miraculously found me a brand new RT to use. I did have to swap it for another RT, but there’s a lesson for anyone who gets the “sorry, it’s all we have”.
I love my RT, and I must admit, yes, when the dealer loaned me one with the Radio I liked being able to listen to the radio as a change to music. The only case I can see for the speakers are if you stop for a picnic and want some music, but riding through the streets in the UK with music blaring is something only a knob does in the UK.
I fancy that new GSA 1300 as the roads in the UK are crap, really crap and when I test rode the GSA1250, my wife loved it, but it was the weather protection and radar that swung the RT for me. As you said, the radar is superb. I have even had it save me, when some clown cut into a short space in front of me on the motorway whilst I was looking left at another clown! I wish you many more safe rides and plenty of fun. Ride safely!

It’s a fantastic bike, when it works. I got mine in 2023 and already had parts of the motor replaced (loud ticking noise), battery replaced, and most recently the bike was eating electricity even when parked, draining battery, so that had to get fixed also (software update). I still like the bike but God this has been painful for me. Luckily the dealer has been fantastic. My S1000XR has had no problems, you cant win them all 😋.

The 1200 RT was the most practical bike I ever owned. I always used the top box and only had the side cases for long trips. Worked great with cold weather here in Dallas, Texas. In regard to tyres, I think Michelin Road 6s and RTs are made for each other- after a few other types I'm on my third set of Road 6s having got 17-18,000km off each set- much better longevity than the other brands and they keep their shape.

I enjoyed your videos, NTP. I think I'm around your age range so what you say rhymes with my thoughts.
Like you, I drove home a used '22 RT yesterday and, after sitting a few hours in my garage, lo & behold, there was a small pool of engine oil under the left cylinder.
Looks like Valve Cover Gasket is compromised or not seated correctly or bolts are loose.
Anyway, I'm waiting for the dealership to reopen tomorrow and see what they can do, My bike is still under warranty. This is my 1st BMW bike after years of Hondas. Let's hope BMW and the dealer will take care of it.
    Thanks for making relevant videos.

Great video. Can agree, have mine (2023) since a month. It is such a fantastic bike.
There is no bike with this level of comfort, that you can move around soooo sporty.... I ride it in dynamics only, so good.
Although =>>> the price for it brand new: >32k in austria (with everything!). but still no cylinder protection!;-)
It is not that big. In reality the RT is the R model with the lowest wheelbase, that's why it handles so well. Also the weight, not so much.
The K1600 and the Goldwing are different beasts.
The only thing i think with this bike: if you are a tall guy, you probably might feel a little cramped easily. I am small 175, for me very nice.
But i think if you are around 190, the ergonomics are not so great (Knee), also the windprotection will then suffer a lot. I guess for tall guys there are better bikes out there.

It was an epic point to point cruiser but the TFT drove me bonkers. Traded it in for an x3 for my wife. Subsequently bought a NT11000 DCT. Great ship arpund ciities but not a patch on the RT re power, deftness in road manners but it doesnt pertain to be a RT. What works a terat is applecar play, no issues with connection and google maps with traffic all there to see and judge. . BMW need to pull their heads of their tails and put apple car play / android into their bikes as their own in house system is imo akin to junk. Rant over.
