Fun fact: The Haunted Mansion's Madame Leota was voiced by Eleanor Audley who also voiced Lady Tremaine and Maleficent. Coincidentally the woman who portrayed the face of Leota was also called Leota, Leota Toombs
I noticed a lot of names in the attractions seemed to have been named after people who worked on said rides, its a thing I guess.
It makes the voice of Leota in the 2003 movie all the more embarrassing, doesn't it?
What about Who Framed Roger Rabbit? How many of you guys when you were kids didn't sleep after seeing that ONE part? You know...

Nah... That was scary when I was 3, but I've seen worse sense then.
I know it's not Disney, but what scared me as a kid was Large Marge from Pee Wee's Big Adventure....

well when i first went to disney world Florida my mom asked "Is this ride dark" to the worker near figment, she said no, it was dark, (not in tone in lightness) same with the Adventures of Winnie the pooh ride
I was stuck in the haunted mansion ride for an our because of technical difficulties. A witch holding her head was staring at me for an hour.
It ALWAYS breaks down when we ride it. (At least the one in Orlando does but I haven't been to any of the other do I can't vouch for them.)
I got stuck on the Constance part.

I always get stopped on that ride, at DisneyWorld. I got stuck for ~20min in front of the ballroom/banquet once, and it was actually pretty cool. Another time, I was going down to the graveyard, when you get turned backwards, and I stopped half way down the hill. That wasn't pleasant, hearing the same song for 25-30min, hearing the dog whimpering. But you know what was the worst? I was stopped in front of the jumpscare zombies. Those heads that just pop up from behind a gravestone. My little sister, who was 13 at the time, started CRYING because it kept surprising her. Chances are, you will get stuck on that ride.
Disney is more fucked up than we think... ._. Like... the Beast's castle was enchanted right? All people were turned into furniture? Well... In the Beast's room, there's a lot of broken and ripped apart furniture... I'll let you ruin your childhood yourself by figuring out the rest :D

Good point, but if that were the case, then why would any of the servants still be there? None would be stupid enough to stay there if he was a murderer. Plus we see plenty of examples of furniture not possesing human counterparts too, so my guess is the ripped apart furniture was non-enchanted and ergo not able to get out of the way. Childhood restored!
Just for the interested: Chernabog can actually be translated into "black god" in Russian, one of the biggest Slavic languages.
I dunno, man; being sent to Pleasure Island as a slave donkey is almost on par with being in Chernabog's Hell. And wouldn't the undead in the Haunted Mansion be from, or destined to, Hell?

My dad dragged me to the Extra TERRORestrial Alien Encounter once when I was fifteen and I unfortunately hated it because I couldn't stand being downright traumatized. I never realized it was so near and dear to so many people.

I actually went on #2 against my will. I started crying and the Ghost Host ( I think... ) goes "Awww, please don't cry little child, you only won't get out." Didn't help to much. T-T

Oh, I wasn't the only one forced there against my will then. When they allowed you to have an exit, I begged my mom to let me go, but she didn't.

Holly Hanssen Frollo was a creepy ass perv and it totally went over my head as a little kid.
I think the reason the Haunted Mansion is such a classic is the jolly-good, haunting tune playing during most of the attraction and also the ballroom. It's all indeed terrifying but at the same time, meant in good fun. Kinda like Halloweentown...except scarier.
Haunted Mansion's all dark humor, with a little levity at points. Disney did one very serious take on the ride for Paris, dubbing it Phantom Manor. While it maintains a lot of the Haunted Mansion's elements, the story changes make it a lot more dark and depressing.

How about the movie.
The narrator hung himself! I didn't understand when I first saw it, but now I do. I can never go on the ride again, even though I know what happens, I have a terrible fear of suicide. Good job being dark with a bunch of children Disney!
jesus.....a kid's head is cut off?! holy shit!! i never thought Disney would do something THAT dark! i thought the only times disney showed blood were in the Pirate of the Carabbean, and Tangled! i didn't think they would decapatate someone ON SCREEN!

There was also some blood in Beauty and the Beast when the Beast fights the wolves, which was notably a bit more violent then the usual Disney fare.
Wow... You're not even allowed to cut off a kid's head in an R rated horror movie! You're not even allowed to hurt a kid! Why would a G rated movie have some kid get his head cut off?! Just...how is that even allowed?!
Have you seen "The Goonies"? It's rated PG yet there's a scene with a naked statue.... it falls over, the penis breaks off, one kid exclaims, "That's my mom's most favorite piece!", and then the kids glue the penis back on, up-side-down. There's even more non-PG things in this PG movie. xD

Something that I have always found really scary is the begining of The Great Mouse Detective where the bat burst in through the window. Those scary eyes and those sharp teeth. It made me so afraid to watch this movie as a kid. Even to this day I find that scene scary as fuck.

Let's see here. Disney is known for usually sugar coating fairy tales and the like... There are depictions of Hell in Disney animation... Night on Bald Mountain is scary as Hell... It's a Disney animation, so it's mostly sugar-coated. So, if Bald Mountain is scary as Hell... and it's sugar coated... and a depiction of hell... then the real version of hell would be... oh shit.

They still have that dang Haunted house thing though. A skeleton that hanged himself, turning out to be the narrator himself? That is too terrifying and dark for dinner, using suicide to scare people.
I actually went on that ride a little over a week ago. It was...disappointing to me, tbh. Maybe it's because we couldn't get a Fastpass.

Funny story a friend told me about her experience at "Extra-Terror-Estrial". She said they force a special harness on your seat so you feel trapped, and also, this harness provides effects like the alien passing behind you and breathing on your neck. She said her harness was a little off, and was able to keep it from trapping her. She sat through the ride comfortable and quite amused at the freaked out people around her XD
My friends and I went on the Haunted Mansion as one of the last rides of the night, so we were the only ones in the room. One of my friends had never ridden on the ride, and it was so great because one of the workers really got into the part. He disappeared from his spot when the lights went out. When the lights went back on, my friend said, "Wait! What happened to that guy??" And he was right behind her. Freaked her out so much.
Just because the stitch ride is stitch it is still creepy as heck! Oh and night in bald mountain. Yeah I saw that in first grade! Thanks to my demented music teacher
Hella dork Jamie I don't know if I watched fantasia in first grade, but I did watch it in elementary school during music class. It might have been second or third, which is still scary for a little child, I mean you are eight or nine, hello that is pretty scary when your that young, especially if you don't like scary things.
BTW I know this has nothing to do with Disney, but in third grade when we were learning about the rain forest, we watched Ferngully the last rain forest, and Hexas scared the living crap out of me.

The Haunted Mansion has been my favorite Disney ride since the first time I went to Disneyland (about age three? Four maybe?) and the only part that really scared me was after the paintings stretched and the hanged body was revealed. But overall great list man!
Little fun fact about the haunted mansion ride: it's even creepier that the Disney parks have actually caught a countless amount of people trying to dump there relatives ashes throughout the ride.

Gotta say, I personally found The Haunted Mansion to actually be a harmless bit of campy fun; the tombstone poems were funny, the animatronics were pretty cool, the visual effects were great and it's still worth a ride if you want a good laugh

I can't remember. The birds brainwashed me, but a few years of drug therapy have allowed me to regain some composure.

I am almost fearless, and the line games scared me, it made it worse when the ear piercing scream as you saw a hanging skeleton, that was the first time I was scared to tears, begging my mom to get us off and leave the men there. They didn't, and that night I had nightmares, something I never have. Good job Disney.

When I was at Disneyland with my family we went on the haunted mansion ride with my little brother (who was 5). He found it terrifying - but then the ride broke down and we were stuck inside for so long! I think it traumatized him.
As a kid, I was scared to hell of that alien ride. I was picked as a meal, and got breathed on by the creature. It freaked me out so much!

Actually the cast members tell people not to do that and sadly have to vacuum the ashes up when people don't listen.

Actually there still remains 999 happy haunts because on most rides and the haunted mansion the installed air vacuums which pick up all particles as in ashes in the rides so they can properly dispose of them after.
***** its especially bad because to leave the ashes they set off he motion sensors. which stops the ride, ruining peoples experiences and if someone with you IS a scaredy cat, then the sudden unexplained stopping of the ride could freak them out more!
This is an awesome countdown, I never knew Disney had made so many scary movies and attractions! I watched "Return to Oz" as a child and that movie really scared me!
I think another scary Disney moment is Pooh's "Huffalumps and Woosols" dream from "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh". That scene frightened me as a child and even today it still kind of freaks me out!
My favourite aspect of the Haunted Mansion, was learning the stories told by the cast members about the mansion's 999 ghosts. If you ever get a chance to visit the ride again ask a cast member about Master Gracey's wedding band and see what they tell you.

I was a victim of that alien ride & holy crap it scared me when my parents & I entered by accident. I have a bit of a fear of solid darkness but then all the alien stuff freaked me out. One thing you didn't mention about this was the effects designed to scare you more. At one point a worker is in the rafters trying to fix things when the alien attacks him. Not only do you hear it but the ride mists you with water to give the effect your being sprayed with the worker's blood. Freaked me the F out

You're right there. I just did some research and found that Disney bought the rights for the film in 1981 so I guess it does count as a Disney movie. It is a great movie plus has the darkest death ever in a Disney movie

When I was a kid, I thought The Rite of Spring was scarier (both the music and the T-Rex). Now I think it's beautiful. Of course, it's even better when you listen to the whole thing.
I remember when I was at Disney with my mom, dad, sister, and brother. And my brother was walking next to me, and I saw that alien ride, I was like, "Hey, wanna go on that ride?" My brothers eyes widened. And he said. "NOPE." And started walking faster away from that attraction.
Actually the ending scene of Fantasia was my favorite. It was never scary at wall.

When I saw the title for this two-part video, the first thing I thought was the end of Fantasia... it haunted my childhood. Glad to see it's here at you know what spot
Oh my god. The Snow White at ride at Disney World scared me to death as a kid. The worst part was that my mom didn't ride it with me the first time I went to Disney World. By the time we went back, they had updated it and made it not so scary. Basically, my mom ended up thinking that I was a chicken for the longest time and insisted that the ride wasn't scary. I spent years wondering why I remembered the ride making me almost cry. That's the worst part, honestly. The ride seemed to just transform. Now I know that they changed it to make it less scary, but as a kid... That type of thing really screws with you.
In a similar vein, Night on Bald Mountain horrified me as a kid because I saw it on TV one night and, naturally, it scared the living crap out of me. Again, my mom had no clue what I was talking about. It only got worse when I would try to point Chenabog out on House of Mouse, but he always was offscreen by the time I could get my mom to show her.
The point of both stories is that a terrifying thing is only more terrifying if you're the only one that can see it. Sometimes it's better to know that something is real than to live with the possibility that it was all in your head.

I watched SWTWC the other day and it did genuinely scare the crap out of is; mainly the scenes with the tarantulas and when Mr Dark actually captures the 2 kids and basically makes them mute

The Haunted Mansion ride didn't scare me until my family's most recent trip to Disneyland. My sister purposefully neglected to tell me that they added the hatbox ghost to the ride, so when I saw it I screeched at the top of my lungs! I had read a Creepypasta about that particular ghost animatronic because I love to read horror stories, and I had joked to my sister about it on previous Disneyland trips because she usually doesn't handle spooky things well. So it took me by surprise to suddenly see the hatbox ghost animatronic when I thought it pretty much didn't exist anymore! It's hilariously dumb looking back on it now, but at that moment I thought I was as good as dead.XD
