I doubt he could even spell IQ.
He's debunking himself - the less an object appears to move due to parallax, the further away it must be. Therefore, they cannot be on a "firmament" only a few hundred/thousand miles up - they are light years away.
He's either just a great troll, or not very smart at all. He points out that the further an object is, the less it appears to move, then questions why stars don't appear to be moving at all relative to the moon. By his own logic, the stars are so far away that they don't appear to be moving.
"[T]he less an object appears to move due to parallax, the further away it must be". Correct. Astronomers use a distance measurement caled the 'parsec' (pc, from 'parallax arc second') which is the distance at which 1 astronomical unit subtends an angle of one arcsecond. An astronomical unit is the average distance from the sun to the earth, or 499 light-seconds. Therefore 1 pc is a distance of about 3.26 light-years. The nearest star, Proxima Centauri, is about 1.3 pc away, or 4.2 light-years. Space is big. It's easier to just grab a can of hairspray, shut the car windows, and inhale.

I just looked for "Bedford Level". In about 10 seconds. I learned there where multiple pages about the Bedford Level experiment available to anyone wishing to find them. I'm starting to think CC, Chris, from Westchester County, New York, is trying to do searches on his Etch-A-Sketch instead of the googly machine. And, Dan, please use that "basic physics" clip. I'm sure it will be as popular as "Thanks, Bob".
Just playing devils advocate here, but search results are subjective. If you search Trump for example, you're not going to find much if anything positive. He has actually done at least SOME positive things believe it or not.
He can't feel himself moving at a constant 55 MPH down the road so the rest of the world MUST be moving around him. It is the only logical explanation. If he was moving and couldn't tell the difference because everything in the car around him was moving at the same speed that would mean that we could be on a spinning ball that is in turn orbiting the sun without feeling the constant speed.
relativistic physics says otherwise. either one can be moving depending on the observer / point of reference. out of all the stuff in the video, why would you latch on to that?
Buildings that are far away don't seem to move when you're driving, then complains that stars that are light years away don't appear to move either. He doesn't understand his own arguments. He doesn't understand basic physics!
Not only did the FE's in the original Bedford Levels experiment make up lots of tosh to try to explain it, they also tried to get out of the wager (bet) they'd made. Just like modern Flat Earthers - they make a wager and then fail to honour it. Flat Earthers are without honour.

@ 2:46 Wrong right off the bat. Basic parallax has nothing to do with velocity. It's simply how a distant object changes it's position relative to a more distant background when the observer changes their position. It doesn't matter whether the observer slowly walks to a new position or instantaneously teleports to the same new position. It's just a stupidly simple change of perspective. We use parallax every instant of the day because our two eyes are in different locations and so we can judge the distance we are from the flower in front of us. The common, everyday effect of parallax is simply called depth perception.
No, our soft spot for Chris is solely connected to his looks. He looks nice, most women would like him. It's his looks. If any other FE spouted the same nonsense, he wouldn't be liked, no soft spot.
This is true of all flerfs. All the cast iron proofs that the earth is a globe - the flatties can't understand any of it. It finally clicked when I (finally) realized that they don't really understand what perspective is. They are all Father Dougall, before Father Ted explained it to him.
The upper layers of the atmosphere are very, very cold. When warm humid water rises it cools and cannot retain the water it holds and it condenses. No container necessary.
He thinks condensation creates water instead of gathering enough molecules from the moisture already there in the air to form droplets, and still thinks he understands physics better than scientists and engineers. I'm baffled how ignorance goes paired with certainty. The less somebody knows, the more they claim to be right.
that's the exact definietion of Dunning-Kruger.. the less you know, the more you think you know everything, and it shows itself all the time but especially with Flerfs :)

I think you basically just said he thinks condensation creates water instead of condensation.. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Condensation The problem seems more like his insistence that the process requires a rigid container. I wonder how he explains clouds, given the "water seeks it own level" mantra..
I'm a (senior) geophysicist I work in magnetic and gravity surveys. I gave up years ago discussing the shape of the planet and gravity with flat earthers, even carefully and calmly explaining how instruments like gravity meters actually work, explaining what's inside a gravimeter and how it measures gravity, how the data is processed, what it shows, what the data is used for and how the results of a gravity survey proves that it's not faked and can't be faked, how it's impossible to fake the shape of the planet, but everything I say just falls on deaf ears. I'd really like for a well known flat earther to come with me on a gravity survey, see us operating the instruments, see how the data is processed, see how many different people with expertise in various technical and scientific fields are involved, see what the end results are and who uses the data and what they use the data for, I'd like to see the reaction to seeing it all first hand.
Waste of time. Flerfers are ignorant and not willing to learn (from you). They don't want to KNOW, they only want to BELIEVE. And they only believe their bogus shit.

you know that subject we can't apparently google anymore ? well I just learnt a new fact: Alfred Russell Wallace was also a qualified surveyor! who understood basic physics like refraction! hence he used poles 12ft above the water rather than 1 or 2 ft which the flerf wiki conveniently omits!
Also interesting that Wallace, who won the bet against the flat earther, was criticised by his peers for taking the bet in the first place! As it was basically taking advantage of someone who could never win, as the Earth being a globe was considered 'most fundamental and established of scientific facts' at the time! The outcome of the bet simply reinforcing what was already known anyway.

This video has absolutely convinced me that he is 100% suffering from the Dunning-Kruger Effect. He thinks he understands basic physics better than most people, but he doesn't understand it at all.
Wrote this just yesterday in another comment that Swedish waters are prone to loose their levels and constantly are floating around trying to found them. There was a case where one water actually found a level but it was a spirit level and alcohol and water don’t mix well … SERIOUSLY that phrase is so idiotic as it has no meaning and is based on something that has to do with huge stretches of water.
Yes, water finds it's own level. However, the tide can be high on one side of a body of water, and the tide can be low on the opposite side of the same body of water. So, even if the earth was flat, the water isn't. If it's 4m above mean sea level on one side and 4m below mean on the other, it has to slope. A simple fact that is ignored by all flerfs.
@@CaptSlog Also wind blowing across a body of water will cause a build up of water due to friction between the moving air and the water's surface. So if you have a steady wind, constant speed and direction, you will find that the water level on one side of the lake is higher than the other side.
I predict that if that trip does go ahead, the flerfs will claim they were tricked and somehow taken to the Arctic instead and that's why they could see the 24 hr sun. It's the only way it would fit with their world view.
In a way it's a shame that he won't go as it would be a chance to save him from his delusions. It he would actually understand what he's seeing while he's there. Well, to their credit, they've done an impressive job reverse-engineering increasingly-complicated explanations for why. also parallax of the Moon is a thing when it comes to predicting its position relative to the stars e.g. for occultations. And the fact we don't see the far side from different parts of the Earth if it was close by. The same for sunspots - their position on the disc doesn't change with location if it were also near by.

I remember taking a course in astrophysics, and during this two-year course, we were assigned the task us estimating the distance to an assigned star. Our professor assigned each person a different star using parallax, and we were given 6 months to complete the task. It was a wonderful experience.

So I read up on the *_Bedford Level Experiment._* Guess what-even I didn't know that you had to account for *_atmospheric refraction._* Which is funny, because in middle school itself, I had been taught about all the experiments proving that Earth is spherical. But my teachers had left out important details-like atmospheric refraction. I bet they've never done the experiment themselves either. And if they were to repeat Rowbotham's setup-heck, if _I_ were to repeat his setup-and saw that the lower part of the target was visible from miles away, we too would be very confused, to say the least. Come to think of it, my textbook showed only schematic drawings, but no actual photos. No wonder flat-Earthers aren't convinced by the sloppy way we present science to them. We tell them that when things are far away, the bottom portions shouldn't be visible. They go ahead and do the experiment. They observe ships, lighthouses, Bedford Level-what have you-from greater and greater distances. Contrary to what we told them-quite pompously and patronizingly, if I may add-the bottom portions _are_ visible in all those experiments. There are photos-no trickery. So then we resort to _"oh, that doesn't count, because it's caused by atmospheric refraction."_ Now we may be right about that, but we've just admitted that we were wrong about the visibility thing. If I were a flat-Earther, I too wouldn't find this very credible. (Don't worry, I don't doubt that Earth's surface is an oblate spheroid. I also believe that-among others-black holes, gluons, and the Higgs Boson exist. But again, those are not things I've personally seen or measured-it's just what I've been taught.)
_"... even I didn't know that you had to account for atmospheric refraction."_ And so, what does that prove? _"But my teachers had left out important details-like atmospheric refraction."_ It depends on the experiment. If you use sight distance experiments, it is only critical if the objects are comparatively close and not tall. That is why FEers always use situations that do not allow an exact decision. Especially as atmospheric refraction is not always equally strong. Sometimes it is so weak that it can be neglected. E.g., if you spot wind turbines (approx. 150m, 500ft tall) of Nordsee One (Germany) from 65km, 40mi (Spiekeroog Island, North-West coast) you will see its obstruction even with refraction (watch?v=21x9BzXPBKA). Even the height from the see level is not that important. It make just a little difference when you stand at the beach or on dunes. So yes, bottoms are invisible when far away. The question is what is far away. And the FEers take advantage of this inaccuracy. There are a lot of other experiments that prove that the earth must be spherical and are not dependent on refraction. We should nor rely on one (kind of) observation. _"No wonder flat-Earthers aren't convinced by the sloppy way we present science to them. "_ Well, I agree that science is presented in a very abstract way at school. At least to me in my country. But most FEers have not even grasp the very basics of physics or even geometry. I guess they had no interests in science in their school time, think that physics is always intuitive and they can make up their own real physics without school load by "logic" thinking. It is not that easy. I do not know if more practical education will change anything significantly on conspiracy topics.

You know of the experiment where a test subject learns if a cell is good or bad - being shown on a projector or similar, the subject guesses the answer and gets immediate feedback (right/wrong)? Normal humans get about 90% accuracy in a short timespan and have created for themselves a pretty simple and consistent model to decide … Now what if the feedback you get is not based on your button presses but on if your neighbour had guessed correctly? You get elaborate constructs of reasoning why a cell is good or bad, based on random answers that follow a normal learning curve re right/wrong …

He is the living example of Duning-Kruger paradox. He doesnt understand anything about anything but is convinced to be the smartest person on earth
All in all, he's just another brick in the wall.
He's debunking himself - the less an object appears to move due to parallax, the further away it must be. Therefore, they cannot be on a "firmament" only a few hundred/thousand miles up - they are light years away.
Great catch!!
He's either just a great troll, or not very smart at all. He points out that the further an object is, the less it appears to move, then questions why stars don't appear to be moving at all relative to the moon. By his own logic, the stars are so far away that they don't appear to be moving.
They just dive in with circular logic and use it to claim that the stars are simply smaller than they are.
The way I read the Bible the firmament is the ground.

That line that Flat Earthers use - Water Finds It's Own Level - Really PISSES ME OFF !!!!
Wrote this just yesterday in another comment that Swedish waters are prone to loose their levels and constantly are floating around trying to found them. There was a case where one water actually found a level but it was a spirit level and alcohol and water don’t mix well …
SERIOUSLY that phrase is so idiotic as it has no meaning and is based on something that has to do with huge stretches of water.
@@CaptSlog💯this really does need to be mentioned to them a million times!

Using parallax to try and debunk the heliocentric model is wild. I failed physics, to be perfectly clear, but even I understand the basic concept behind special relativity.
I’m truly amazed at flat earthers. They simply don’t understand, but instead of studying to find out why, they simply say it must be wrong. I don’t understand, therefore it is wrong. I’d love to hear a psychologist’s view on this. Maybe that’s something you could do? It would make riveting watching! Keep up the fight!
I'll second this.
My secondary chemistry students proved CC wrong the other day. All we needed was a little spark. No container required.
So then we resort to _"oh, that doesn't count, because it's caused by atmospheric refraction."_
Now we may be right about that, but we've just admitted that we were wrong about the visibility thing.
_"... even I didn't know that you had to account for atmospheric refraction."_
And so, what does that prove?
_"But my teachers had left out important details-like atmospheric refraction."_
It depends on the experiment.
Well, I agree that science is presented in a very abstract way at school.

The fact that nasa is brought in for some reason in any discussion like it matters never gets old.
Because everyone knows that NASA, founded in 1958, has been lying to us for 2,000 years. They're that insidious! THEY just don't want us to know... something... for some reason...
By this point, when CC brings up "NASA," I just mentally sub in "the Jews."
That's where conspiracy nuts tend to end up, anyway, regardless of whether they start by blaming "NASA," "international bankers," "Freemasons," "Frankfurt School," "Illuminati," etc. So why bother entertaining the in-between steps? 😑
"Parallax is when you're on the highway and the thing that's far away appears to not be moving at all, but houses that are close move fast, so why does it look like the moon is moving and the stars aren't?"
*Really* Chris?? I mean, as pointed out, that's not how stellar parallax works - we sure as hell don't see the moon moving because it's stationary and we're flying past it - but by his own logic he just answered the question! Stars are far away!!
The moon is not stationary though. It's just moving around us slower than we're spinning at the center. But yes, he does answer his own question lol.
To flerfs everything about the globe is mysterious, and yet a big giant dome over us with "luminaries" floating on it is perfectly reasonable 😅

And (as per dirth) if you believe in flat earth you also have to believe that light only goes for 3-4,000 miles. Strangely, he didn't produce any scientific proof for that wild assertion. He might have also said, it doesn't travel as fast as "they" say. Once again, no evidence, just something he pulled out of his backside.
Too bad that, even if the earth was flat, simple trigonometry proves he is completely wrong. It must be horrible to be that dumb but to think you are smart even though his commenters rip his logic to shreds. He's a dunning-kruger exemplar.
Fizzicks schmizzicks
True, but basic Flatsics is incomprehensible, especially as it contradicts itself and the real world.
Would be fun as some game, though, where you have to make up physics, economy, psychology, … on the hoof. It cannot be how it works in the real world or what another player described, of course, and whoever cannot BS up a new theory or law to cancel out the inconsistencies in their made-up science world, loses.
You know of the experiment where a test subject learns if a cell is good or bad - being shown on a projector or similar, the subject guesses the answer and gets immediate feedback (right/wrong)?
Normal humans get about 90% accuracy in a short timespan and have created for themselves a pretty simple and consistent model to decide …
Now what if the feedback you get is not based on your button presses but on if your neighbour had guessed correctly? You get elaborate constructs of reasoning why a cell is good or bad, based on random answers that follow a normal learning curve re right/wrong …
