- In this video ' How to STOP your dog barking/ lunging at visitors & dogs; aggression' I am working with a German Shepherd dog called Jazz. Jazz constantly protects the house and garden by barking and lunging at visitors. Next to that, she shows aggressive behaviour towards other dogs by lunging and barking at them. She could bite them if given the chance so her owner calls me in to help.
Through the techniques I show you how I build Jazz' confidence in her environment and in me as a leader. Resulting in calm, more relaxed dog that doesn't feel the need to bark, lunge or attack anymore.Training an aggressive dog takes time, patience and know how.
If you show your dog that you will protect them against any dangers they will look to you for guidance and follow your lead. However please note that you need the ability to adapt your approach with each dog.

Thank you for sharing this video. My GSD is 8 mo and he's not aggressive but a lot curious and barks/lunges at other dogs on leash. I'll be trying this technique to get him to focus on me. But did you have to use prong collar during this process to stop the lunging in the beginning?.

as someone in the middle of training a dog to not be aggressive towards other dogs, these tips really helped. i can now walk my dog in an area where other dogs are. she isn't comfortable enough to upclose with other dogs but her walking manners have greatly improved

She is always barking at people for no reason and sometimes she always barks for half an hour it's noisy for my neighbours if we tell her to stop barking she always barks louder and louder if we didn't tell her it didn't stop tho
I had the same problem with my 2yr old shepherd, barking started at 6.00am every morning. The first day started doing your techniques and noticed an immediate change. The second day, there was a few little barks in the morning. Third day, no barking. Just shows how smart these dogs are. Thank you for saving my sanity and my my boy.

Omg, you have literally CHANGED my life!! It hasn’t even been 2 days, and my dogs are showing SIGNIFICANT difference! All these years I’ve relied on putting negative aspects on it, but in all actuality my dogs were only trying to protect me when I should be protecting them!! I really do feel they trust me, and it warms my heart so much to see the impact 🥺 I’m recording my journey to so once it’s all done, I’m going to post!!!!! Great video, but wish it had shown the owner "after" she came back and if she was able to handle him the same. I have often found that trainers handle extremely well, but we still need help because they've learned to trust the trainer, but we are still us.

I have chronic back, neck & leg pain, and, probably stupidly, adopted a 2 year old (very strong) Great Pyrenees with this problem, Haley.
She goes insane...
She looks like she will murderer dogs at her front end, but then is wagging her tail the whole time!...
She horrifyingly escaped from my yard, went next door lunging and barking ar my neighbours kids and dog, I had a heart attack...
Then, as soon as she was near my neighbour's gentle dog, Haley stopped!!! they sniffed noses and butts as I arrived in a panic... and that was it...
Thank God she didn't bite the dog or the kids!!!!!!!!!!
I keep a muzzle on her now.
Yesterday, I took her out of our home & big back yard, where we have been stuck for weeks, for the first time to walk in day time... and I ended up falling as I lost my footing when she lunged at... nothing? or nothing I saw anyway...
I hope to be able to "fix" her otherwise, I will have to give her up, and I have NEVER done that in my life...🥺

I watched this video in desperation after my BC/heeler mix terrorized my father-in-law when I opened the front door the other day. I started the exercises immediately, practicing heel on our walks and thanking/removing her when she barks at the window. In a matter of days, she's started to calm down and realize that I have the situation in hand. This morning a tree service crew was working in our front yard, and when they rang the doorbell, she went wild at first, but calmed down when I told her everything was okay. She didn't rush the door, trying to "get" the man. While I'm not ready to invite strangers inside just yet, this is remarkable progress. Later, when he knocked, she barked once, then stopped when I reassured her, again, that everything was okay. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but I'm feeling hopeful that we can help calm her anxiousness and reactionary fear. Thank you, Nigel.
PRDGirls you gave me a lot of hope. My heeler is very hard to walk, and a nightmare at the window.
This method is INCREDIBLE! Walking our 5-month old Belgian malinois has always been a major stressor in our day, but literally 2 days after watching this and she is improving so fast! She doesn't bark at everyone we pass and she calmly watches people go by out our front window.. great tips!!

Miss.Donna thank you so much because my dog is like jazz when he see the ups and fed ex man he get so stressed and fearful of their big truck that my dog his brain he go omg big scary truck and big scary man i must protect my house and my dad well last saturday he bit the ups man on the back of his ankle , so animal control came and had to take him from me so i called them today they said that he is 100% ok and that he is eating and drinking , well i decided that i want to redirect his brain so that he can be just like jazz at the end how she was happy and playful because in the house my black lab is 100% trainable and capable of learning ,well after Mr.Nigel Reed i told my mom that after tremendous researching and learning from dog trainers that i feel 100% confident redirecting my dog's brain that ceasar milan and that trainer zac george taught and confirmed that just like mr.nigel reed did and showed us remove the dog from what provokes and triggers his stress from a stressful situation im going to doing that , well she responded with thumbs up now in my brain i know "ok to stop him from hurting other humans or dogs then by 2 things 1.remvove your dog from the stress by removing the stress the dog will clam down almost imediately this in time witll stop the barking byt letting the dog know in his brain ok because i did my job alerting dad i no longer have to protect. now the leash work im going to do , im going to do anything i must do in order to remove the aggression towards the ups fed ex man , and any man that my dog might encoutner while i take him on a walk , this is because the previous owners that had my black lab their daughter built a bond with him so as a result of that i know in my brain he is comofrtable most around females , but then after watching other trainers on youtube i understand better now that some dogs dont like humans in their house they only like the family or man or woman thats inside their house on a daily regular basis if that makes sense now because of Mr.Nigel Reed i know now i can stop my dog from hurting other humans

Sadly many dogs get euthanized because of behavior that can be rehabbed. Good work for saving Jazz's life.
For real. Humans get all of the chances in the world to change yet a dog slips up and it's no longer allowed to exist.
I just adopted a dog who was slated to be put down - came in to the shelter as a "bite" dog and nothing at the shelter was done for him - the shelter environment often exacerbates issues. He is going to need a lot of work and while I didn't actually want a dog, I couldn't stomach the thought of no one even trying to train him. Maybe I won't be the right person, but at least I'll have tried.
Even more sadly, euthanizing them makes in many cases no difference with learned behaviors.

I started tearing up towards the end to see her go from an insecure fearful dog seeing anything new as a threat to a confident, happy, relaxed girl who can truly be a dog hits close. I have 2 GSDs and have always loved the breed and to see her owner not give up and see just a positive change is heart warming!

I started using Nigel's technique early evening on May 7th, and Lucy was at the bay window barking like crazy! As I approached her, I told her thank you, peered outside and looked around, I then put her in the bathroom quietly. I've also done this at the kitchen door, then I walk her to the bathroom and I set the timer for 3 minutes, and so far so good. I can tell she is already starting to calm down and for the first time in over a year I've had my blinds (new) fully open! Sure, Lucy is still going to run to the window, but I know she is already calmer by her actions. Today, I will be working with her in our yard! Lucy is a very healthy and spoiled 5 year old, but the thing is I never thought that they needed to feel protected by us too! I always thought it was the other way around, and it is also, but it has to go both ways in our relationship! Everyone should watch this video, it is the best I've ever seen so far! I also have had 3-4 trainer's during her 5 years, and nothing worked, and I didn't like their techniques like using a choke collar or while walking using her leash as a whip on her backside. No one needs to ever hurt their dog for any reason at all to get them to listen.

I did this with my GSD who took up guarding when we moved house. And it worked like magic. We have had to do some repetition the past few weeks due to her young age and it works so well. She went from stressing and barking at every sound to sleep soundly. Now she will give a warning bark look at our reaction and relax.

been training with dogs 35 years im 100 percent sure it only work with the trainer but not the owner in dog psychology doesn't work that way, would like to talk to owner sure they are back with the problem
@@mikeangel1344 I train dogs the exact same way teaching the owners also and the results are amazing. I see the dogs that i have worked with years later whilst being walked by their owners and they are now happy dogs with no issues
@@mikeangel1344 From this and another earlier post, it seems that you are working with more aggressive dogs. Also, if you notice, Nigel is definitely the Alpha; a caring one. The only thing I disagreed with was his final statement that his canine pupil no longer had responsibility. What he actually did was relieve the dog from some responsibility, and managing appropriate responsibility properly. Ref: 15yrs many dogs in a rural setting.

OMG what a difference 2 days of doing this has made with Misha our 6 month old border collie kelpie cross. Due to Covid-19 she hasn't socialised as she should, and the world is now intruding on hers and she has responded so well so hoping over the next few weeks she will continue. Now we have to work on the walking and no barking at everyone and everything.

OMG! THANK YOU! I've been trying all kinds of methods to stop my dog from acting as a guard dog. He randomly barks at people when we're on walks, especially at night, and barks at the window and door at every sound. I started using your method barely 4 days ago and IT WORKS FAST! He's completely changed indoor. He still looks at me when he hears something outside but he doesn't bark anymore. I'll get up and look out to show him I'm here and it's ok. I still have to do the same work outside but I'm finally confident I'll get through this! *He's 90lbs and he really scares ppl when he barks so it has been very problematic. FINALLY I've found a trainer who understands my dilema and has given me a practical application of a successful training method. I can't wait to start trying this with my two wee Jack Russels. This was beautiful. My dog was killed by a German Shepherd while we were on a walk so naturally now every time I see one I get scared. (Not that it was the dogs fault. It wasn’t properly trained.) It’s amazing to see what putting time and effort into training your dog can do. I hope the owners of that German Shepard see this video and turn that dogs life around.

This has worked So well with our re-homed scared of everything GSD. It has transferred to reacting to our other pets as well as strangers in and out of the house. This makes total sense!! I have a Shepherd that I've had since she was 2 and always thought she couldn't be fixed! I am sooo relieved that even though she's 7 it's not her it's ME! Wow, I've only realize how unfairly I have been treating my labrador whenever he barks at the outside, knowing if I've taken up the responsibility of assuring the safety of our territory.
This was lovely. I'm retiring soon and want to have a dog, again. All the dogs I've had in the past were puppies, because I didn't want to inherit 'problem dogs', which always made me feel guilty.
Your videos have made me feel more confident about going to a shelter, to love and care for a dog who's possibly had a 'problem owner'.

Pity video stopped at this spot. Was the owner able to carry on where trainer stopped. Often these dogs return to their old habits very quickly because of owner's tension.
Not the dogs fault unfortunately. Owner took on a german shepherd and failed to train her bless.
It's actually not aggression. It's leash reactivity. People often label behavior as aggression when often it's just a dog reacting out of fear or frustration because they can't get the "threat" to go away, or they can't go see the stimulus.
Its not dog agresion ...
It's a fearful dog... Not socialized Whit the surroundings.
That's the main reason of the reactivity.
Don't attend the behavior.. That's not the problem.
Attend the source of the behavior...
In this case it's fear of not knowing the surroundings... People or other dogs.
Shane Vetter exactly and reactivity is made MUCH worse with prong collars/correction. The dog needs gradual positive experiences and to be kept BELOW threshold, so they react less. My dog became leash reactive after being attacked three times by off-leash dogs when they were on-leash. Walking towards an incoming dog on the street was the worst, as naturally dogs greet from the side and do not stare at the dog for a minute before eventually meeting. Recently I took my dog to a dog jog event and he did amazing, not reactivity and I am happy to say he has mostly recovered. He can still be reactive to other large dogs reacting at him (I see a lot of reactive dogs in my neighbourhood, but the owners just shout and scold, rather than get professional help from a behaviourist) and he I very wary of labs off-lead, but he uses avoidance whenever possible and I allow him a loose leash so he can do large semi-circles around clearly under-socialised dogs. Leashes trap dogs so they only have freeze or fight left, not flight. Another issue is barrier frustration eg. Many dogs fence fight, but as soon as they can reach each other they get along fine. The leash is a barrier which causes frustration. For this, you encourage calm behaviour at a distance and slowly close the distance, the dog's reward is greeting the other dog/person. Personally, I think this type of reactivity is very difficult to treat without having lots of patient dog owners as friends/family members and even then the sog may still react to other stimuli it's desperate to investigate. My dog also used to be leash reactive to cats, but not out of fear, like the dog-leash-reactivity, out of barrier frustration. That only lasted a very short period though as I have a lot of friendly cats to practice with :) we were actually ATTACKED by a cat once, came out of a bush my dog was sniffing suddenly and we both got scratched up. For some reason, my dog never suffered after effects, other than getting very aroused/stimulated whenever we walk down that same street again. We do often see the same cat, but I know to keep my distance now as I'm scared of it also!! I reccomend carrying pet corrector (compressed air) to keep away any off-leash dogs from your leashed dog unless you can trust the other dog. If I had done that from the beginning, my dog would never of been attacked :(

One of the best videos I have seen so far about GSD behaviour. I own a 7 month puppy and we had exactly same issue. This helped so much, he is very friendly in the house and dog parks, but when on the leash he is pulling and barking like crazy. Thank you for your video!
This is exactly my dog's behaviour. 2 year old rescue Doberman we got a few months ago. Sweet, sweet dog but tough to handle and scared of other dogs, passers by etc. Working with a local trainer to do the positive reinforcement and "de-sensitize" her to what are in her mind dangerous situations. I hope she can get to the point Jazz got to!

This is a great example on that your dog is an expression of you. Many dog owners simply need leadership care toe and don’t have it. Only stres, fear and frustration that makes the problem even worse.

So interesting! I have a German shepherd like this one. Exercise helps a lot. He also needs down time in his crate cave every afternoon and evening as a break from being "on duty". They're working dogs. It is hard wired into them. He is also a clingy lap dog which is hilarious. He is absolutely patient with our children though which is excellent.

I am waiting for my first puppy ever to become old enough to move in with our family, but the way you teach is so similar to the principles of how I work with disabled adults and children who have a hard time getting acces to meaningful, effective communication with others. Dogs, of course, are different in that they need to be lead by us, but at the root of it, there are so many commonalities; we, as living beings need connection and to be heard and seen by others. And if someone senses too little control over their lives and the need to be alert to a degree that stresses them, what we need to do, comes downn to listening, being attentive, making connection and assuming that what the person (living being) does is meaningful and communicates important messages to us
Thank you for your message Ditte. Lovely to hear about your amazing work. We heave learnt to use our emotional intelligence to bring up children but with dogs it is still work in progress for many. There are as you point out many crossover comparisons because we all have needs, concerns and communication. And so that must be tapped into.
I obtain a 1 year old shepherd july 2018. She was never socialize with people or dogs and atleast 5 months of her life was spent in 4x6 cage. On the leash she is aggressive and lunges, at the dog park off the leash she is scared of other dogs. She has started playing but will not go more then 50 feet or so from me, and sometimes hides behind me. Honestly it breaks my heart to see. I'm so glad i found your video. I'm going to start right away in curbing this aggressive behavior. I will find your book also. I'm sure this will finally work. Thank you in advance!

Agree! He is one of the greats! We have a marvelous one in our local as well. His name is Stonnie Dennis and he has a fabulous TH-cam channel with very helpful content. I hope you will try him out!
UK people may have a learning curve with his thick Kentucky, US of A accent. Very southern, country dialect. Once you acclamate, it’s music to one’s ears. What I like about Stonnie Dennis he uses the same animal behaviorist approach. But he gives you a different view point. It really helps you understand the paridigm more fully. Nigel Reed’s book is very good. His 4 foundation points are:
1) Physiological Needs
2) Safety Needs
3) Belonging Needs
4) Esteem Needs

OMG , Mr.Nigel Reed sir , you have not only changed my life but you have saved my 5 year old black lab , i have been doing what you did 1st recycling man came to take my recying and my boy was looking out the window , never 1nce made a sound then the garbage man came to take my garbage and my boy slept throug it , i thought i was gonna 😭😭😭 my eyes out in joy then i rewarded and praised him 1st praised him then reinforced with a little piece of bacon to reinforce his calm relaxed nature

Nigel Reed - Thank you, thank you so much for the tips in this clip. This method has worked for us with our 1 year old westie who started barking at the front door and in the garden for no reason. You have taught us that her barking is trying to bring our attention to a potential threat. Whenever she barks we follow her, stand next to her and 'look out' then say 'its ok, thank you' and it has worked every single time. This is genius and has changed our attitude instead of feeling fed up or 'here we go again...be quiet'! We now get up and go to where she is barking, look, say the above and she stops barking instantly because she knows we are checking the surroundings for threat, then we walk away and she moves onto something else. This technique you have shown should be available to all in puppy schools/dog agility classes as its proved priceless for us, thank you again! I am so grateful to have found your clip! I encourage people to try it as you think its not going to work but I was so surprised when it did, I will give anything a try to make my dog stay calm, putting in a little effort will pay off in the long run and it has with this method. I can't thank you enough!

I cannot that you enough for demonstrating that it doesn't take violent or forceful behavior to teach proper manners and comfort in canines! This video significantly helped my miniature dachshund, and I couldn't recommend a better demonstration of humane, consistent, patient care for our canine companions than this! Have to say this video truly was an eye opener, I realize now that im netting my dog take responsibilty of the situation! My dog is not this aggresive but he will lean on the collar and bark. This happens only from home, good behaviour when away from home/in the streets
This dogs not aggressive? If it was aggressive and the guy just walked up to that dog he would lose his hands and have many bites.

My lab mix puppy is exactly like this! I feel like i can’t walk her because she lunges at people and dogs! She also barks at the window and door if she sees dogs and people! This video is great i cannot wait to begin this process with her

We're working on barking and your method is working amazingly well!! It's been less than a week since she ran after a neighbor walking her dogs, and just a few minutes ago she gave a quick bark and walked away from the door. She clearly feels more comfortable and is exhibiting fewer signs of stress, and those she does show fade quickly. I adopted her right before lockdown (we're in New York) and so things have been weird since and it's been kind of hard on her. All I want is my pup to feel happy and secure. Thank you so much!

Omg this brought tears to my eyes just amazing video. My dog is half Akita and although he’s fine with dogs he barks at people outside and guards the house and barks at people knocking at the door sometimes when I take him out it’s so embarrassing as he comes across as vicious when in fact he is actually a very nervous dog.
I have an Akita too, they are infamous guard dogs. She is super sweet with our family but with strangers and other dogs....
same...with my pit mix..it is my dream to see him play with other dogs without a leash...will it be possible one day..

Well done!!!!! We just drove 11 hours to pick up our new rescue. We're in our '2 week shut down' period right now and she's making strides but is 'absolutely the same as this dog as you showed in the beginning at this time.' On our way home with her, she went insane if we stopped for gas and someone was at the pump next to us, or anyone walked by the vehicle. Once we got her home, she'd go out of her mind when there was a knock at the door or ANY sound inside or out. We are working on decompressing her. We know she isn't an aggressive dog but exactly as you stated, 'she has to trust that we'll protect her' and were seeing it more every day :)

This is so cool. We always did this with our dog but with a different motivation. We want our dogs to alert us to something new or strange but not to bark at ordinary things. So from when they were a tiny puppy, if they barked we immediately responded. If it was something ordinary we thanked them and then told them to be quiet. Our dogs soon learned to only bark at strange things. Our dogs always know they can count on us to come if they bark but we expect them to not bark unless it is something strange and to stop barking as soon as we give the all clear. I never thought of a problem with lunging and barking with fear and a need to alert us to a need for protection. This is a new insight for me.
This explains perfectly the problems we have with our two small dogs. Great video and explanation. Need to do some work now!

This guy literally did nothing this dog wasn't aggressive at all. That dog would've played with those other dogs from the beginning it's just bad owner ship that caused him to bark

Doesn't work. After weeks of this every other day with a neighbors two dogs, my Havanese, Oscar (7 yrs old) decided he liked those two dogs...but ONLY those two dogs. Still lunges and bites at ALL other dogs. Even the ones on television and my cell phone. 🤦🏽♀️🤯🥺🥺🥺
Now I feel bad for wasting my neighbor's time and still miserable I'll never get to enjoy my dog anywhere but in my house (can't even enjoy backyard with him most often because my neighborhood is FULL of dog walkers and he lunges at the gates to try and attack them all). He even digs at bottom of gate to try and get to them and I have to take him right back in house. Praying he doesn't get to one of them because they will put him down. 😭
Hired a dog trainer for an entire year and wasted a ton of money for her to recommend putting him on anxiety meds...we're 5 years in and still no luck. This sucks but I love him so much I don't want to get rid of him because he loves humans and kids. Wish I had a normal fun dog that I could take on walks and to the parks.
@@trickyzenmom I can assure you it works. You have to fine tune your approach which a 10 minute video won't do. You need bespoke help. Sorry to hear it didn't work out with the other trainer but don't give up. Check out my online course for much more detailed information on the subject.

I have a chocolate lab who would take me for a walk. I am so glad I came across your video because for the first time we had a successful walk. At the end of our walks I would end up in tears. She such a sweet and loving dog I couldn’t understand why she acted the why she did. She has even stops barking after I looked out the window and tell her thank you. Hi, how's it been going with your lab after a month? I have a 7yo lab who is spritely but so strong and goes beserk barking at other dogs on lead that I need my partner to walk her. It's my dream her get her to be calm and have fun with other dogs.
Gezarie07 Hello it’s going great. She still barks at other dogs when we walk but she doesn’t drag me across the street to get too them. She just lets them know who’s boss with her voice. It’s still a working progress and it gets better every time. If I need to spin 100 times then I spin 100 times. My neighbors think I am crazy and that’s ok because I can walk my beautiful lab and not end up crying 😊 She would get very upset when she saw other dogs and she felt the need to always be on guard and that made an extremely stressful situation for the both of us. So when she would get like that I would walk in the opposite direction. It’s like the flight or fight situation. For me when I would “flee” the situation it took the pressure off of her to always feel like she needed to fight. Like I said I do lots of spinning and my neighbors think I am crazy but that’s ok with me 😊😊.

Wow this technique works great I finally got my dog to stop barking at the thing she would bark for hours at for the past 2 weeks. It only took me about 4 tries then she stopped.
