To Be Clear: German shepherds are wonderful dogs. They are good companions and they are loyal and fearless. Their behavioral features and excellent intelligence distinguish them even more. GSDs succeed in nearly everything they're trained to do, including guide and assistance work for the disabled, police and military duty, herding, search and rescue, drug detection, competitive obedience, and, last but not least, true companionship. As a German Shepherd owner, there are some things you must never do to ensure you get the best outcome, and in this video, we will talk about 5 things you must never do to your German Shepherd.

My son bought me my GSD when I failed to commit suicide!
She’s 18 months old now and is so clever at understanding my needs I’m going out three times a day now and managing to talk to strangers in a positive way
The doctor understands that I take her everywhere and has made a note on my file that she is my service dog , this just kind of happened naturally and for the first time in years I go shopping by myself and my life has opened up hugely
My problem is PTSD due to my time in the military and I have anger issues and anxiety I managed to convince myself that everyone is a idiot and not worth spit now I have other dog walkers I enjoy having brief conversations with
It is not a exaggeration to state that my GSD has saved my life

My wife and I rescued a beautiful Schutzhund GSD off of the street. Skinny, no toe nails, and very street wise. So skinny,... after 10 days of the best dog food you can buy, I came home to 10,... yes, 10 puppies!
We had to hustle to get the proper winter set up. Cedar chips, enclosed igloo, and heating pad for the pups. We lost 3 because of a huge winter storm that dropped temps to below 0°F. Cie-Cie layed on them. But the other 6 did well.
We've kept 3 of the pups. They will be 2 years old in December. Females are Miss Texas, and Faith. Panzer is our big boy. He's already 95 lbs. of lean muscle.
Cie-Cie is 80 lbs. of pure Protection Dog.
Very jealous of any other female being around me. She's not hurt any of our other dogs or cats, and prefers the company of our 18 lb. male cat "Maximilian".
I grew up with a 135 lb. great-great-great Grandson of Rin Tin Tin. I thought nothing could compare with the love that dog had for my Dad, but I was wrong. Cie-Cie's sleeping beside me as I write this. I pray the old saying "All dogs go to Heaven" is true.
God Bless y'all's GSDs, and yourselves.
    Alpha male signing off.

Are you using the term “Schutzhund” GSD to describe the dogs lineage from say East Germany or the Czech Republic or was the dog already trained to understand German commands and be highly proficient in obedience, tracking and protection ? Just curious.

My GSD is a lifesaver, she was a rescue, she was terribly abused, when we went to see her, her left front lagg was in a cast, broken ribbs, and so malnourished her survival was extremely low, we got her at 5 years old, she now over 8, extremely energetic, 80 pounds, in perfect shape, she loves the horses, and great with are little Shitzu, she is fiercely protective, we put her on a leash when company comes, she doesn't bite, but jumps and barks, it scares people, she goes everywhere with us, she loves the boat, she loves to go hunting with us and she is very good with kids, I am a GSD owner for life now

I'm currently walking and training a 2 yr old Shepherd who is just the most gentle soul I've ever met in a dog bar one. It's taken me a couple of months to fully win her respect, love and loyalty but it has been so worth it and I'll be gutted when this routine comes to an end. So much so I am currently looking for a Shepherd of my own to bring up to hopefully be her match and my very own constant companion. I've had numerous dogs before but this one really has gotten into my heart in a big way.

The part about having a routine is really true. We call our guy "The Rain Man" because he's so regimented. Also, they do understand language. We've resorted to spelling certain words in front of him, but now he's figuring that out. They're such good companions because of their intelligence...

My Duke is the smartest dog I have ever had! Yes, he expects to have a routine every day! He loves kids, and wants to help me garden! I was spading and he jumped in the bed and started digging too! He tries to "herd" our cats and gets upset if they try to sharpen their claws on the furniture. He thinks that's his Job! I got my wheelchair stuck in my garden and my room mate had come in to cool off. Duke stayed out with me. When I couldn't get "unstuck" I said "Duke, can you go get Melanie? Get her! Tell her to help Mama! Mama needs Mama Melonie! He took off and went on the back porch, opened the kitchen door, and started whining at Melonie until she said "Where's Mama? And he started barking and started going to the door and stopping until she followed him and "rescued" me! She told everyone how he came and got her to come to my rescue! He's just so smart and seems to know things people don't believe a dog could know or understand.

I lost my first GSD Loki in August 2019, He was 14.5 yrs old. And Perfect. Literally saved my life 3 times! Once by standing off a Mountain Lion! 14 years and he and only had one disagreement. He just did nothing wrong. The loss was crushing. I was not going to get another dog because I already had the best one and everything would pale by comparison. November 2019 I get a call from a shelter, Roki 2yr old GSD needs adopted, was set to be euthanized the next day. I went to meet him. Took him home that night! He's not Loki, he's not perfect, but in some ways he's better. The constant is the love and loyalty they give. I'm glad I took the risks and got another Shepherd, yeah he'll break my heart too, unless I go first. Remember no dog is truly dead so long as someone remembers, and loves them.

I've had four GSDs in my life. ALL were rescues! Two had been abused. But after a few weeks with me knew they were loved, and were wonderful friends and companions. The last one died young at 6 years old; Cancer. That was May 2018. I haven't been able to want another dog. Maybe someday.
But I advise you to study this breed before taking them into your home. This short video helps, but there is much more you need to know...
They WILL learn your routine, and hold you to it! If you're up at 4;30 Monday through Friday, don't expect to sleep in on the weekend! They won't let you "oversleep"!
If you take a walk after supper, they will be ready rain, snow, or blizzard! Don't think you'll skip a day! They LOVE routine!
My dogs all learned "work" meant I had to go away for a while, and they had to stay in "their room" (the utility room or Master bathroom.) They knew the sound of my car's engine too, and my coming home meant instant outside time!!! Again, rain, shine, or blizzard.
But the Love and Loyalty they give in return! You'll never have a better friend!!! They are worth the constant shedding, the multiple walks each day. Everything!!! They are wonderful animals!!!
If you have never had one before, do some research. If you have, you know what I'm talking about.
If Love alone could have kept them young and healthy, they would live forever.

He is highly intelligent, and he knows words, sentences, and their meanings. I never taught him any of that. He has a big box full of toys and I ask him sometimes to get me different toys out of the box, and he gets the right one for me, each and every time. They are truly amazing and wonderful dogs. I can fully understand why police use them, and that they are used in a variety of settings like Guide dogs, and dogs for the disabled.

I had to put my service dog down the last Wednesday this year. He was a true companion, friend and looked after me. He started having seizures and the vet was unable to get them under control. The last night before he was put down he seized all night. I hated to do it but felt that putting him down was the best thing to do. His genetic younger brother was born August 1, 2022 and I pick him up on September 24th. He will be trained as my service dog and just like his older brother will be trained for search and rescue as well. Waiting is hard but not much longer before I have the new pup. He will have the same name as his older brother. I felt that naming the new pup after his older brother was a way to honor a dog that had been so much a part of life for me. So, on to potty training, again.

I miss her so much and while I agree with your list I believe these are very general things and there is exceptions. My dog was alone 8 hour a day since she was about a year and a half but she knew that once I got home we were gonna hang out together and walk for miles or wrestle on the floor. I'm convinced she was happy throughout her life with me.

Hi Gordoxium … I am sorry to hear about the loss of your girl And I can relate to how you feel because I lost my boy of nearly the same age, two weeks ago. Also to cancer. He was magnificent and the best dog ever there ever was. We loved each other to bits and I am really struggling without him. I’m 78 and cannot start again with a puppy for his/her sake. But I am minded to assist if a mature GSD is in need and I can help. In the meantime I gave a small number of videos. By the way the best one I’ve seen on TH-cam is German Shepherd dog in Ukraine rescued. If you watch that you will know exactly what my dog Buddy looked like and how he behaved

@@juliane3683 Absolutely gut wrenching to hear. There really is no substitute to a dog in your life. The limitless loyalty no matter what and the purity of their affection for their humans. I recall that even if I had a foul mood or was angry or frustrated it would just melt away as soon as I got home and my baby jumped to greet me tail wagging. It breaks my heart to not be able to pick her up and cuddle her ( she was the crazy type that enjoyed that ). Hubby and I were reduced to spelling some words because our GSD listens carefully and can pick out the words she associates with what she wants like food or walks. But she learned to spell so now to ask him if he has fed her, I have to say " you know what we do when we put something on our mouths for meals? Have you done that to the dog?" We have had 5 GSDs, two with CD obedience titles, one trained to voice and hand signals,, but this is the smartest.
