Re-watching this video and realizing that I need to reward my dog for what we call his “old man ruffs.” If he’s trying not to bark, he’ll sort of bark under his breath and it’s much quieter and I can tell he’s really trying to get his barking under control. 💜

I always say "Good girl!" When she "old man ruffs"... I really don't mind the ruffs at all, they're not loud enough to bother my neighbors, and it's just a little sound.. not like full on barking fits that shake the walls!

I love his show and thisjust summarizes and lays out all of the basic methods he uses on the show. What i love about this guide th-cam.com/users/postUgkxKkYeOoCV_w2vPX0CSyVWkhew2c4FYk0d is that you don' need to read the whole book cover to cover ... You can skip to the chapter (lesson) you want to read about. The book is arranged almost as a problem-solving guide ... Here is the problem and here is what you need to know/do to correct it. This man knows his stuff ... But more importantly knows how to teach people how they can work with their pups themselves!

Last century I had a dog called Trixie. I don’t remember why she barked but I did come across a way to teach her to have some control of her barking. The first thing was to teach her to “speak” on command. (Easy bit). Then I had to teach her to stop. She didn’t have physical control over her barking. She would sort of hiccup as she was trying to stop the bark from coming out. I rewarded her for the attempt of course.

My dog will go to a window and bark at anyone moving outside or next door inside their home, except when we had our motorbike stolen. But apart from that, she alerts us to everyone…loudly. I go to her, say thank you, look outside, say all is fine and she can be quiet now. This works quite well.

Amazon delivery people set off our Yorkiepoo alert barking. She's quick to learn changes in the Ring and Alexa alert sounds to know when to bark at the 'intruder'. She also seems to be able to tell if it's just us triggering the alerts or the delivery people. We've gotten her to reduce it some with a settle command but she'll still do a quieter "see I told you so" bark.

Our little terrier mix definitely yaps because of a territorial issue. We call him "the sentry" because he runs back and forth along the fence as he does it, like he's literally standing guard. Our other dog often just starts barking because he is.

Zak, Thank you for these videos. I am a disabled Veteran who for the past 15 years has had a service dog. My service dog has just past and a week later we had to give back our son's dog that we were watching while he served in the USMC. Our sole remaining dog a little 10 pound Cotton De Tulear is heart broken. I have decided my medical condition no longer requires a SD to keep me safe so we are not looking for a new Service dog. We've decided to look and found a beautiful Wheaton that we will get one week from now.
I have trained a few dogs while I was younger and your video's are a great refresher and also very refreshing with the positive methods you use. If you know of other assets or tools that could possibly help in this endeavor please let me know. I know that I am disabled and I hope this does not become to much of a task. (The reason we went with the Wheaton is her size is going to be manageable unlike trying to work with a 90 pound lab.)

I am so sympathetic. I had a wonderful border collie who I taught (unofficially) to be a service dog. (I had polio as a baby.) A great memory of my Jasper was when I was walking and fell down three times. On the third time he sat on me and wouldn’t let me get up until I had rested!
He died a couple of months ago and I am missing him and so is my remaining dog. Her behaviour has become very nervous and I think it’s because she is missing Jasper.

My dog is much worse than the white dog in your video. She barks, she puts her tail between her legs, growls and trembles when she meets humans. She wants to disappear and run away. I’ve done a lot of progress by redirecting her and with the help of a trainer from instinct in San Diego. She can now stay in the car while I go grocery shopping and I’m able to go outside for 20-30 minutes. I’m saving money to take her to see a behavioral vet. I really think she needs medication to get through this. She is almost two and I can’t have her continue rehearsing this behavior.
Thank you and thank you Bree for your guidance and content you provide to us so we can be better pet parents.

Still working on this every day, in the 8th year of my dog’s life. Her excessive excitement (attention seeking) barking has always been a problem all her life. It’s hard to be consistent with the reinforcement when she’s quiet, during the barking fit, cause the pause between barks is only 5 seconds or less. She gets plenty of daily mental stimulation (brain games) and exercise all day because I bring her everywhere with me. ❤ she was having an extinction burst during the Dog Daddy Class in Santa Monica on Saturday 9/23/23. It’s in the TH-cam video that you posted. That’s all you hear in the background, when the police are questioning Augusto. 😂😂😂😂

I have a dog with problems with excessive barking. He is a Huntaway, which I am told has been bred for it’s loud bark. They are used as a working dog for herding stock here in New Zealand and Australia. So the cause of his barking, seems to be simply because he needs a job! He has found his own job, or “hobby”, as I call it. He barks a birds. He will quite happily run madly around under the trees in our yard, barking loudly and monotonously at the birds. Without exaggeration, this will go on for an hour or more, with hardly a breath in between barks. He has a morning shift, and an evening shift 😂 it coincides with when the birds are most active. Fortunately, we live on a large rural section, so havnt had complaints from neighbours, but it drives us mad! I have tried everything to discourage him, but nothing short of grounding him inside, seems to work. He gets a long offleash walk everyday, which he also spends barking. At seagulls. He is very happy when he’s barking. He sulks and is miserable being confined. We have been advised to use a shock collar, but I am very reluctant to do this! I doubt it would be effective anyway. He is a lovely dog otherwise. Anyway, I love your channel, and just thought I’d write this, as it seems a case of dog barking that is different to your case scenarios…. He really just enjoys barking!

Today we went to my Moms and he played with grandkids then I dropped him back home and was going out again. He went nuts barking because he thought he would miss another party. So I slowed way down, made him a peanut butter chicken Kong and gave him a bully stick. I sat down and did say no a few times cause he had worked himself up a lot. He settled with his Kong and didn’t care when I left and was fine after. I think it’s partially separation anxiety and partially triggers which are many, like putting on shoes (Velcro:) and even just moving fast getting ready or the phone rings right then. It’s definitely much better then it used to be. He’s almost two. This is good. I’ll work on those triggers with him and leaving several times in a row. Thanks!

Our girl is 7 1/2. She was diagnosed a year ago with a brain tumor, two meds & cbd to help!! We have two problems, we live in an RV & she is quite aggressive when someone comes to visit, (even people she knows well) lunging & growling. We put her food dish away so she doesn't have to protect that, but still doing it!! We can't leave her on leash outside but herself! When we sit outside with family or friends we either have to put her inside RV or on a leash away from everyone! She'll be quiet, then gets into her stance, low growl & lunges to end of leash! She has even broken strong leashes!! Quite frightening to anyone walking by with dogs or family/friends coming to visit! She is otherwise happy, gets lots of walks, swimming, & chasing her ball! She has been attacked by small dogs so very reactive to them & this last winter attacked by a pit bull, serious wound by her eye, requiring vet visit & stitches! We are at wits end! Any suggestions would be very helpful!! Watch your videos, most helpful, that is why I'm reaching out to you!!

I have a two part question/issue. 1.) How do you stop a dog from barking outside of your bedroom door when you're trying to be intimate with your partner? I tried putting him outside but then he barks to get in. As soon as I make a noise he gets anxious and feels like he needs needs to protect me I assume. He has a bond with my son and I, more so myself than anyone. 2.) It also happens when there’s play or roughhousing he gets anxious and tries to be in the mix gets close or barks at a distance. At first his tail’s is waging but if it goes on and on I don’t know if his demeanor shifts into more of a protective mode vs. a jealous I want to play too mode. Because he's a Rottweiler I adopted at 3yrs old it scares my spouse and son and my partner always assumes he’s being aggressive and I don't always believe thats that case. I think the laughing and squealing my son does causes anxiety because it makes my anxiety level rise as well; maybe my dog is sensing my anxiety but part of it stems from the noise level and then the dog getting involved. I have an open floor plan home and my souse doesn't want him in parts of the home that has carpet because he sheds so I cant kennel him anywhere else in the house. He has his own bed in the corner of the living room. What can I do to bring peace without having to hide or sneak from the dog to be intimate or putting him outside while they play. I don't want anyone to get hurt or for the dog to be misunderstood.

I have a Hungarian Shepherd, and they are known for being loud. I trained mine till on a point he is getting too excited about things and start to bark. Furthermore, I let him bark, because he has to guard the house. And then I go see what triggered him, at that time I'm close to him, so I can control him easier. And I'm calling him to the backside of my house, to get away from the source that is triggering him. If he is quiet, I give him a cookie as reward. It's the easiest way to learn him not to bark for any reason.

My husband and I rescued a 8 month old corgi/beagle mix and his foster sister a 3 year old shepherd/lab mix. (Of course they are guesses of the breed) from our group Heart of America Humane Society
We heard about the corgi and that he was returned 2 times due to stubbornness, but I am stubborn also so thus the retraining begins. We hold the adoption events every Saturday at Petsmart and I feel I do a pretty good job for a novice but ran into something different.
I can walk the corgi by himself and he is pretty good, some fear but we are working on confidence and experiences to help him feel comfortable walking alone. Now do a total 180 when I walk him with the shepherd he ignores me and focuses on the shepherd! He will walk ok until a dog approaches across the street or behind a fence and my corgi goes "bat sh!t crazy" I feel it is his protection or "that's my lady" mode. He will urinate on top of the places she urinates so I think it is possession mode. Can you help? How can I join your group so you can help me figure this out?

we have all types of barking, that's just crazy. i was sure our boys had dog autism. now I know it's called reactivity. after I started watching your videos a couple of months ago, and even more importantly, Instagram, we started exercising about 2,5 weeks ago. we just also relocated to a different country, so it's now a survival question :) and I see the results! we have all types of bad behaviour, but now we are making some progress when seeing dogs outside, and it took only about 3 days to start playing fetch. i use our second dog as a "treat" - and it works perfectly! thank you!!

From a place of deep respect, I wanted to share an observation and some feedback. A reaction of mine, if you will, that is so at odds with how i experience all of the content you share. It's about your thumbnails. They are so often dramatic and extreme, and stand in stark contradiction with you and your message. Our (female) dog , Scout, barks because the UPS /Fed Ex/ Amazon truck is in the neighborhood. She barks because I stood up after being sat down awhile. She barks when I come downstairs ( & gets very excited). Compounding this is the fact that her bark causes misophonia for my husband......her bark causes sharp pain in his head.
I appreciate Scout alerting me that a delivery truck is here. But this barking because I have stood up to walk into another room or just because I have come downstairs is a bit much. A favorite line we use is "It's not a party !" In other words, "You're way too excited over nothing, Scout !"
This hyper girl is wonderful in the car, tho! She loves to ride in the car & she's quiet ! She doesn't bark at everything she sees. So....we take her w/us often!
If I hustle her into her kennel right quick when she starts barking because of a delivery (she about loses her mind over deliveries), she'll quiet down immediately. I can let her out as soon as the pkg. is inside.
I kid you not....all I have to do is shut down my laptop or turn off the remote mouse to it & Scout's bouncing around, barking!
Believe me, she is smart & knows all sorts of clues from us ! There are words we dare not say because it'll trigger her.
She is almost 7 yrs. old & a combination of 4 shepherd breeds...one being Australian. She has a beautiful disposition....not a mean bone in her body. I love her to pieces......but the barking & jumping up on me is a problem. 40 lbs. of muscle being thrown at me ....wow. She just gets so happy & excited !

I just started working at the kennel where I’ve been taking my dog. Sometimes when my dog is in an external kennel where she can see everything, she does this. I’ll tell her to be quiet and she listens but a minute or two later she starts again whether she can see me or not. How do I correct this?
Also, how do I correct this behavior in other dogs? German Shepherds tend to bark a lot and three are coming.

    Hi Zak,
I just rescued at 7 year old lab. For the most part she is very sweet and well behaved but she hasnt had any training and doesnt know simple commands, doesnt know how to play with toys or run around with us when we try. What videos of yours would you suggest we watch?

😄 Funny coincidence , my dogs were trained to bark when the mailman comes with a Bark Box . We rarely got packages and when the Boxes started to arrive , my dogs associated the mailman ( and packages generally ) with toys and treats . Now every box is suspected to be a Bark Box or Pup Box , it is so sad to disappoint them , when I bring an other box in the house .
It's hard to address , because the mailman doesn't wait for me to calm down the dogs and he comes unexpected . But well .... the fun the dogs have IF it is a box with toys is worth it . 🤗❤

Do you have a video on how to stop reactive behaviors when people play? My dog Frankie has been getting more reactive (sharp bark, jumping on us and trying to get between us) when we play around (high five, play fight or smack a butt😂)
I want to curb this and be confident with her behaviors before we have kids.

Thanks for the video Zak. My hardest problem in dealing with barking is figuring out the WHY. My dog is fine when people she's never met come into the house, very friendly, no barking at all. When she sees someone on the street when we are on a walk she barks a lot (kind of like Veronica does) and strains to go to them.. Both situations are with strangers, one is inside, one is outside, I'm with her in either instance.

Doorbell, Roommate coming home, delivery drivers or truck that sounds similar driving by, neighborhood kids heading to the bus, occasionally on separation, not where I'm supposed to be at the time I'm supposed to be there, neighbors walking their dogs in front of our house. My top priority is the door, usually if I can get her away from the window, the people and dogs walking by the house stops being a stimulus. She's 60%GSD so that's part of the issue. It's a breed trait.

Would love to know how to do this kind of training when you have multiple braking dogs in the house--how do you work with them as a group since they are always together (none of mine tolerate crating --all rescues with a lot of separation anxiety). The barking is out of control. Do you use spray bottles to interrupt the barking and then treat?

My dog barks anytime something exciting it about to happen (going on a walk, getting somewhere in the car that is exciting like a hike or park) and the barking is almost too much to handle. We’ve tried getting out of the car and waiting until she calms down to let her out or put her leash on her but it has not improved the amount of barking. Any suggestions on how to get her to focus and tone down the barking before these activities? Maybe a distraction right before?

I don't know if it's "NORMAL" or not but my female Golden Doodle LOVES barking at everyone that walks past my house but ONLY if I'm home. If I'm NOT home she sleeps in front of the attached garage door and never leaves that position (there are NO windows there! That's where I normally enter the home). She doesn't seem to ever bark when I'm not there which leads me to believe she is trying to protect me from EVERYONE when I'm home. I work from home so yeah it's pretty annoying and she's almost 5. I've tried several techniques, including yours, to stop her from doing that. No idea where to go next? The OTHER issue my pooch (Bella) has is jumping. She jumps to kiss EVERYONE who comes through the door. Most of my family (OK ALL of my family) hates it other than me but I'm most worried about young children. Even though she is only 42 pounds her claws can be sharp and they can hurt if she goes crazy with her jumping. Don't get me wrong I LOVE Bella (A TON) and she is a fantastic and a very smart dog! Wish I could show you the tricks she knows and has learned from your videos. I've also tried to teach her not to jump and tried to educate my family on how to stop her from doing so but it hasn't worked unfortunately.

When my Japanese Spitz barks a lot in our backyard I know that she is tired and needs to come inside and relax. That actually helps a lot. Also, interestingly, I gave her garlic every day because she had fleas and it made her fiery and more barky. Since I stopped that she is back to her normal self, which is pretty barky but not as much as under the influence of garlic😂 Please don't start a discussion with me about giving garlic to dogs, all checked with my vet😊

Our Dog barks out of sheer excitement.... like when we let her out of the car at the beach she runs along barking into the air.
People think she is aggressive just because she is vocal. But she is just a happy happy Samoyed
She isn't barking AT something, it's just into the air as she jumps and runs in excitement.

How do you avoid a "bad" behavior chain. For instance, your dog barks, they then quiet down, you reward for the quiet. But, the dog learns: bark, quiet, reward as opposed as just quite and reward. I made this mistake years ago training by boxer puppy for loose leash walking.(she just turned 10). She would pull, come back to me, get a treat. so that became the routine: pull, come back for a treat, then go pull ahead again.

    • @chacehawkins4708
      @chacehawkins4708 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

As Zak has said in other videos "don't wait for the bad behavior to address it" get ahead of it. Like he does many time in this video. Particularly the part where he shows inertia learning not to bark when he goes outside. He sets aside time for a training session and rewards before she starts barking and slowly increases the "trigger" rewarding for each success.

    • @amylynn826
      @amylynn826 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think as an opposite of the other advice, if you are waiting for a reprieve from the barking to give a treat, that is just a small step. You then get longer periods of silence as well as trying to get ahead of the bark. Once they start to get it then there are no treats in the silence after the bark, or allowing them to only bark once or twice then silence

I have a collie who does really well with not barking when I'm there but as soon as I'm not there reenforcing the good behavior he's back to barking. It's excerbated by other neighbor dogs barking back. I'm not sure how to address this since he does so well when I'm there. Only time it happens is when there are other dogs outside and it becomes a huge chain reaction.

I'm facing a unique experience that isn't covered by these videos. My dog barks to alert of people/dogs on the street. It's very loud barking, but she doesn't do it when I am outside with her. Only when she is outside alone (we are inside the house and can hear her barking - she is never left outside when we leave the house, so that is not an issue). I go outside, she stops barking. But until that moment, it's very loud, aggressive barking. I don't know how to fix this, as she corrects the moment I am present, but until that moment is a nuisance. I am constantly going outside. I do not think this is a good solution - and I really don't want her to alert for people on the street, anyway. However, I live in a gated community and there are very few strangers passing by (and she's not outside all day, anyway, so it's probably very exciting for her). She doesn't do this behavior if she is outside her "territory", so I can't take her to a busier place and train. I am really in a pickle and do not know how to address it.

@ZakGeorge!! HELP!! I have a 9 week old English Staffordshire / Australian Shepherd puppy named Rollo, he’s been with us for a week exactly. Typical puppy problems that your videos have been immensely helpful with, but one question:
I’ve tried to start socializing him early. I take him to my office and we keep each other company all day, he plays well in the office and is great EXCEPT he is extremely afraid of other people. His tail goes between his legs and he growls or nips out of fear when anyone gets near him. I watched your other video with the older puppy and older dog Millie, but he doesn’t let anyone else within 6 ft of him without cowering and nervous growling. I understand his apprehension completely, everything is new and scary until I show it isn’t. But I don’t know how to show him it isn’t.
    My question is two-fold,
First and foremost how do I overcome this?
Second, when he gets scared I go back and forth on petting him because I don’t know if I’m: A) soothing him and teaching him it’s okay or B) Rewarding/Reinforcing his resistance to strangers. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Let him see lots of people from a calm distance but give him the choice how close to get if he's uncomfortable with people coming up to him. Ask them to give him space, no eye contact or pet him, say he is in training. He needs to learn you will keep him safe from his triggers. You can have people gently toss treats toward him to learn to pair them with a positive association but do not have them give him treats from the hand (forcing him to be uncomfortable to earn treats will only make him more leary). Having someone turn to the side and crouch down with a hand extended so he can choose to come up and sniff them. Also treat him when he looks at people calmly and gradually increase the distance as he is comfy. Also make sure you're in a very calm state, breathing slow, loose leash etc. Best of luck!

How would you handle my dog Geddy. He is almost 3 years old and 1/2 cattle dog. He is in a fenced back yard and when we ask him to drop something like a stick or bark from a tree, he turns on his herding mode. Obsessively barking and lunging at our legs. We have tried keeping a leash on him to try and get him to settle down, but he takes the end of the leash and runs way too fast away from us, so we are unable to stop the behavior.

My lab barks when excited via game of frisbee anytime I have a hold of the frisbee almost like he’s saying, “Throw it! Throw it! Hurry up!” Immediately after he gives it to me. I’ve started saying “calm” with the sit command (for me being two fingers pointing down) and then throw the frisbee once he’s quiet, which has been fairly successful.
Other than that it’s jealousy sometimes if I don’t pet him while petting my other dog. Granted, they’re both jealous lil snoots.
