It’s fantastic to see the dogs looking to you for ‘advice’. I wish I had known all this back in 1993 when I had a GSD who used to take me for walks. She was the baby I hadn’t got at the time and I allowed her to do anything because I deemed the dog walks as being ‘her time’ but I now realise she would probably have been much happier if I had taken the time to train her properly rather than taking her somewhere isolated so I could safely let her off lead to save me getting my shoulder or elbow dislocated. I also had the theory that if I walked her for HOURS she would get tired and not pull. I was so ignorant. She was my first dog and only lived for 9 years and I was devastated to lose her. I have had ever so many dogs since but now I am disabled and have an assistance dog which is a Staffy of all unusual breeds to use. She helps me as a medical alert dog but also she can open my sliding door at home, she can bring things which I drop and she is an all round perfect dog who has a little tag saying ‘please do not separate me from my handler, her life is in my paws’🐾🐾
Hello, can I ask how do you let your dog sniff and get stimulated that way, whilst also walking nicely and not pulling? That is the part I am struggling with, do you have a release command where they can then explore a bit? Do I decide what they can sniff? :-)
@@TheSplashchannel1 I just stop and let the dog sniff/pee. Or my dog walks slightly ahead and then slows down(to communicate he wants to stop) and then I stop. My dog knows if he just stops abruptly I will not stop.
Show this with an UNTRAINED DOG, I hate videos like this where people just bring up trained dog and make a 10 minute video.

@@apolyedapolyed7524 'love' is critical to a meaningful relationship with pets just like with people. It's also very motivating for doing the right thing by a pet. But it's irrelevant to the nitty gritty of training :p
Used this method on our two retrievers and then on their puppy that we kept.
Took 8 weeks with the big male, 4 weeks with the female and 2 weeks with the pup.
Works every time but boy do you need patience and lots and lots of chicken!

You dont need the chicken, any positive reinforcement will do. Most people just have trouble keeping consistency so food is the easy way out

make sure you feed very small amounts of only healthy treats. don’t feed them junk and do not feed enough to make them overweight. obesity is a huge problem.
When you say it took 'X' number of weeks, how often each week did you train?

@@michaeljordan7587 I'm by no means a professional, but the way I trained my dog was to stroke my dog whilst eating. Then giving my dog the food, then taking it away etc. Then the same with treats like bones and toys. Since doing this I've had no issues with resource guarding.

Finally! A video that shows a dog not already trained to do what the tutorial is teaching! I greatly appreciated this - the constant repetition needed to cement this new behavior is just what I needed to see; I tend to think I’m doing it all wrong if my dog doesn’t learn it in just a few tries. Thank you for teaching me to teach my dog!

I've always thought that too. They make it seem like it takes a few minutes to get the dog to act better. In reality it takes several days (or weeks depending) but with consistency.
V. Bowman I agree. It’s always the trainers essentially bribing you into a lesson. That can’t work if i don’t live anywhere near them or afford their prices. The best lesson I learned from this was the picking up the leash. I always have chaos with my Malinois as soon as I touch the leash and stupid me hooks her up and out the door I go with a crazed, pulling outta harness dog and I still continued walking and fighting her for almost a mile walk. I/we have a lot to learn and this is a great start for me. The shock collar did nothing for my dog. She thought it was a game every time it vibrated or I buzzed her on a low shock. I just couldn’t turn it any higher knowing it was the wrong way to train her.

I really like how you show her puling again and again and all of the corrections also the "32" times to get out of the door. It is really helpful to SEE the failures and corrections or else it looks like you did it twice and then they were perfect. Thank you.
The American dog training channels are v serious and all the dogs respond like the keenest Navy Seals. The subtle humour in your videos make them all the more realistic. Your patience is Saintly but your authority is huge. Millie is testimony to that.

Thank you! My puppy was struggling big time on the leash. As soon as we stepped outside she would go nuts. I watched this video and started her off today just practicing inside my house where she could feel safe and she actually paid attention to me! She was engaged and we made a ton of progress not only inside but outside in my yard where there were more distractions. Still a long way to go but I can tell we have a foundation now! You are the man!

One dog took five days, the other was ten, I was taking both dogs out for around two hours on their own each day! Some dogs may be shorter or longer.
This puts a time to how long a training session can be. Looking forward to tomorrow’s training as I start over inside the house.

It works! When the dog pulls on the lead finally you know what to do. Our rescue dog now walks to heel beautifully.
But every day is a school day. I keep reminding her that a tight leash has consequence - back we go. No drama, no criticism, no emotion needed.

Great Techniques! Always had the worst walks with my 4 year old collie lab, no matter how hard I tried to correct her. Anyways, last week I decided to give the training another shot and she's finally mastered it! I've also noticed that the stop-start-change direction helps her with her fear aggression when we are on our walks.

Our year old 70lb lab is a lot.. we need to work more on it. We are also getting a 8 week old puppy i want to try this from the start

I have a lab mix that’s about 1.5 years old. We adopted him around 7 months and didn’t do much leash training because he never pulled when he was younger and was easier to control when he was smaller. By the time he was 1, he was pulling and more difficult to control, and it has just been getting worse with age. I’ve watched multiple videos, and this one is the best. I have been doing this with our dog for ~2 weeks, and it is crazy how well this works! It’s like having an entirely new dog.
I had gotten to the point where I HATED walking him, but it wasn’t optional because we live in an apartment, so I dreaded walks and prayed we wouldn’t see other people/dogs. My boyfriend started having to do most of the walking because I’m not strong enough to control him. Now I LOVE walking my dog again.
We are taking him on vacation with us at the end of the month, so I’m going to continue reinforcing this behavior with him. He does so well with it. We just need to keep reinforcing it in high stimulus environments - I tried this at the park for the first time a couple days ago, and it was a total flop. But we will get there!

For weeks now, I have been watching (over-dosing actually) on dog training videos while working with my German wire-haired pup. It gets VERY confusing with all of the varied techniques, theories, and philosophies out there in TH-cam Land, and holy moly, I did not realize how uber-competitive trainers are with each other on You-tube. You and only a couple of others are the exceptions.
I just bumped into this one today and tried your loose leash tutorial with my Germain Wire-haired pup, and I am happy to report we were successful --not perfect, but I now look forward to working with her, whereas before I dreaded it.
Thank you for being humble and patient with the viewers--letting us know that we might mess up but that it's no big deal. If at first you don't succeed , try, try again seems to be your underlying theme. I didn't catch you once inferring that you actually do it faster because you're a pro, and ... "if only people did THIS the correct way, and if only people did THAT the right way they would be as great as I am because I am the LAST word on the subject." (unlike a certain British female TV personality who will remain nameless)
I appreciate that although this video seems to be state-of-the art, aesthetically speaking, it does not have that commercialized feel that I have recently become suspect of.
I am looking forward to watching more of your videos, and I hope your book is still in print!

The dogs: "Gosh! I thought that guy would never get it."
Last evening, I was so annoyed that my 11 month old Chocolate Lab was pulling me all over, especially with me having a sprain in my neck. Came back home searched and found this video from Nigel. What struck me was the chocolate labs in the video behaved the way my puppy behaves, pulling me during walks.
I put the tips into practice straightaway. He didn't like it when he realised that he was not able to lead me. I only spent about 45 minutes last night. For this morning's walk, he is already engaged in the walk and was a treat. I did have to repeat and repeat and change directions for a number of times. His response for the training has been amazing. Duke is nearly perfect in less than 24 hours. I am confident that the tips do work.

I love this because it's very simple logic: You pull because you want to go forward? Then you don't get to go forward; we'll turn right around. You only get to go forward when you're not pulling.

This is an amazing technique we’ve been doing with our shepherd puppy. She’s so much calmer and that was after the first time. We’ve done the door thing too and she’s getting this and understanding. Thank you for such a great video and such a lovely calm technique. Wish you had more videos though

Mine do that. I soon run out tho. Then i forget which pocket i popped some sweets, for me. Then, yyyyy-uck, i nearly swallow a knarled old dog treat. Women's trousers have crap or no pockets. A bum bag just makes you look as if you have a bed pan strapped to your middle. I either drop greasy sausages or take too long getting them out of a bag. It'd be nice to have a solution to this issue as long as i don't have to give up Love Hearts?
@@bt9124 I wonder if a silicone treat pouch would work, since that material is much easier to clean than most. Try googling "silicone dog training treat pouch" or something along those lines, and see what comes up!

The key to getting any dog to obey you is patience and understanding. Patience to teach them the right way 1000 times if necessary. And understanding that they are a living being deserving of respect and kindness. The only people who resort to choke chains and shock collars are those who cut corners, and cutting corners never get good results.

Thank you for these! I training a newly adopted 2 yr old dog in the city for the very first time and am learning that my more rural area training techniques aren't going as fast or smoothly since there are SO many distractions right out the gate and we don't have quiet outdoor space like a large yard or fenced in area. This video paired with the barking German Shepard guard dog mentality are going to really speed up the training with my new furry friend.
This was a fantastic video. I tried the technique with my Uber stubborn rescue and within 15 minutes he was heeling beautifully. More practice needed but we are on the right path. Thank you!
I think this video is so helpful, especially the advice about being patient because I forget that.............I expect my dog to 'get it' immediately. Also the point about keeping your distance from other dogs you meet while out on a walk and keeping your dog's focus on you. One very useful lesson I have learned is to keep it simple: short, manageable and successful lessons. Don't try to move too fast and if your dog can't manage distractions move back a step in the training; reinforce the previous lessons. This sounds like I know it all, but no, I'm learning too!

Dear Nigel, I am so glad I found your video. Thank you so much for it. We have a new dog (4 years old, his owner died), the dog is trained in basics but his pulling was driving me crazy. So I watched your video last night, watched it again this morning, trained the dog all morning and - IT WORKS!!!!! We already had two nice walks in the wood near our house, perfect. He only got distracted by another dog, by two squirrels and a cyclist, but soon got back to the routine. I am really grateful. I will now look for more advice in your videos. So thanks again for your video, it helped me tremendously, I subscribed to your channel and will go through older videos.
Thank you! I've watched too many videos on this and yours are truly the best. We have a 1 year old male pitbull who would always drag us around when we are on walks, from start to finish and never letting up. I am on day 3 of trying your technique and the change is mind blowing. We had a great walk this morning & he has now started correcting himself by slowing down when he feels the leash pull a bit. Can't believe the progress in such a short amount of time. Will definately be trying the recall training once we have perfected walking on leash.

I have 2 huge dobermans that I can't walk anymore, because I've been injured before. I was walking my black/tan girl (who graduated obedience classes) and everything was going great until an off leash dog came running/barking at us. My girl yanked me so hard that I flew through the air, picture superman pose, and landed so hard that I fractured bones. No walks since, only backyard play. Now both of them freak out when I grab a leash even though it's just for a car ride. I get dragged out to the car by each one. Now that I've moved I've been wanting to try walks again but no training "tricks" have worked to stop the dragging me. I've wasted so much $$$ on classes, books, videos, expensive collars sold by celebrity dog trainers and local pet shops. I'm hopeful that this is the solution we needed after watching the difference made with those choco labs. Thank you for making this video for all of us searching for honest help.

Even the most boisterous dog soon understands that we''re going where you want, not where I want. However, training the dog is easy, training the owner is usually where the real problem lies.
