For photography, you can really get what you need with most cameras made from 2007 and up. After that, it's just a megapixel war. The only thing that has made significant strides would be video capability.
Don't be afraid of older cameras. They are still awesome!

    • @KaiCreative

Excellent piece of advice 😻 for video though the 6D is definitely dated - for photography still Amazing 🤩

I love my Canon 6D so much I bought 2 of them I never leave home without it and I will never upgrade to any other camera It is a beast in all kinds of environments and as long as people remember to have it serviced regularly the 6D will last for as long as you need it. I've been using mine since 2014.
    It's still going strong.
I've managed super sharp and colourful low light shots using a canon 50mm 1.4 at a few thousand iso.
And with the 24-70 F4.0L It's amazing for long exposure night photography.
That one cross type focusing point focuses better in lower light than the 6D mk 2 and many other cameras.
A friend and myself were photographing by moonlight recently, and his newer Nikon 750d though an astounding camera, with many more cross type focusing points, needed a torch to find focus.
The 6D managed fine by the moon alone.

#7 - Astrophotography! This sensor is amazing for long exposures in the night sky. Sublime when paired up with a good lens.
#8 - Battery. I can leave this camera under the seat of my car for months, literally, and it is always ready to shoot when I need it. The battery doesn't drain at all. My other cameras, GH2 and XT1 are always dead when I pick them up.

Hi Darren, I'm the same as you, have had my 6D for a few years and considering an R5 or R6. Haven't been able to find much information the new R camera's 1080p performance.. I did see one youtube vide where they said it wasn't very good. I'm not too keen on working with 4k files so the 1080p capability is really important. It also seems that the R6 only offers a more compressed recording format for 1080p. I know this isn't important to everyone but it definitely is to me.

    • @DBConerly
      @DBConerly 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@StevensYusuf They just announced that they will be adding all-i compression with a firmware update so you will have the best possible. I was worried to until I saw that. 1080 will be downsampled from 4K so the image should be sharper.

Man, this really speaks to my confirmation bias. I had $1k USD to get back into photography. I'm making a move on the 6D mark I. It's full-frame and it has wi-fi. I'm spending the rest of the money on a Canon 85mm 1.8 lens. I don't think camera bodies have really come that far in 8 years to make a difference for non-pro shooting. I'm trying to put most of my money to the lens. Wi-fi was a huge thing for me which is why I'm not going for the old 7d from 2014.
Thank you for confirming my biases Kai.

Put some perspective to this, remember that Professionals used EOS-D1 for their corporate work back in the days and shot fantastic images. The list-price on release was a massive 6500 Eur and the resolution was a meagre 4 MegaPixel only. I have shot on many models over 30 years (including pre-digital) and I now want a new body for photography (only). Since I don't shoot fast action buying a 6D is a no brainer + I know it will last me years to come and quality of images will be top notch. Exceptional value for the money.

I still rely on three 6D bodies as my principal bodies: However, I replaced them every few years with new-refurbished versions as the shutters are not as robustly built as the 5D line. Lighter body and better high ISO than the 5D probably, but maybe lacking in a few other places. A good compromise choice until I see Canon do something new that I really want.

I love reading comments like this! I've met a few people now that are still going strong with their 6D's. I use to use mine for videography projects, but have since moved on due to the better video options offered by newer cameras. That being said it's still brilliant at photographs and depending on the glass used is still very much a strong contender in the photography field.

In about 2016 the majority of my work was built around portraiture on a 5Diii but then I decided to learn a tiny bit about video to try launching some online haircutting courses- so I searched around for used and abused cheap 6D bodies (I ended up with three of them, two had 300k+ shutter actuations 😳). I set them up with nifty fifties so I could very cheaply record multiple angles of a haircut at once (can’t put hair back on the head and recut it if I missed a shot). That project ended up being the most fun (and lucrative) thing I’ve ever done. Fast forward to today, while I’m making almost zero money with a camera, I spend so much time agonizing about minor technical variances between my R and R6. Occasionally I’ll look for videos like this one (people having positive outlooks or reviews about older simpler cameras) to remind me that the tech specs I stress about aren’t what’s keeping me from going out there and GETTING IT DONE... Thanks for sharing this.

I found a 6D (with problems, but all fixable) for $100 and now I'm using that instead of the 90D. Considering how the 90D is technically much better it is amazing how much I love the 6D in comparison. Sure I miss the video and articulated touch screen, but I work around it. Worst case I can go back to the 90D for video.

The only problem when cameras get old is finding a nice sample, but its not too hard. Or, buy a beat up one super cheap. But nevermind the 6d, i just got a pentax k-5, with a lens, for 300 canadian dollars and it rocks. It shoots way faster than my 6d, its built better, and its pictures don't give up much to the 6d, not accounting for lenses...or flash...or autofocus. Its better in the shadows. Its in beautiful shape. It might actually be the cheapest camera i've ever bought, even cheaper than the basic rebel i got my mom last christmas, and i'm pretty sure all my compacts back in the dirty oughts cost ore than 300 bucks too. Its ridiculous, insane value. I take it out in the woods and beat the shit out of it. Still keeping all my canon stuff, including the 6d. Especially the 6d.

I've been a 6D user for a couple of years and enjoy the size, light weight and the image quality from my budget L lenses which consist of the 24-105 f/4 IS, 28-80 f/2.8-4, 70-200 f/4 and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS. I plan to add a second body but wanted to see the R and Rp mirrorless bodies before making my decision and I've decided to stick to my dslr's and add a second 6D to go with my 70D. This was the PERFECT review of the 6D and what it is capable of. Rather than trash it you pointed out all the good qualities. If anyone ever asks me what to get I'll point them to this video! Thanks

Got my Canon 6D a little over a year ago for $600 with only 4,000 shutter clicks. This thing is amazing! Put some good glass on it and the results are exactly what I needed. The ONLY downside is it’s not very weather resistant I believe, and I’m someone who hikes in the PNW so rain is common. But, this overall shouldn’t deter you from buying it given how affordable it is.

  • @Barrrt

I have it and love it and shot award-nominated work with it. The low-light capabilities are awesome and I love having a sub-1000-euro camera because it just feels... less vulnerable somehow.
Only downsides for me are the limited auto-focus-points. I often miss composition opportunities with my portrait work because I mostly use the center-focus-point on the eyes, which often means I crop off a part of the body. Smart people may tell me to focus and recompose, but I'm all about capturing the life in someones eyes and the peak of their smile, and focus and recompose often isn't fast or accurate enough for that. So if I get the budget for it I might upgrade to a camera that has eye-auto-focus, but the canon colors and lack of an EVF would be dearly missed. EVF's still feel like I'm playing a video game instead of interacting with a human, at least to me.
Cheers to all my canon 6D brothers (and sisters). Let's create magic with this beautiful tool.

New version is a big improvement over the first generation (in camera stabilization for video, 45 focus ceos points, video auto focus, flippy screen, 26 Megapixel and so much more however, I do agree that that the 6D is a tough camera, never had any issues with its performance and served me well. I've owned a 6D since 2014 or so. Compared to my 90D, the autofocus is appallingly slow on the 6D, especially in the live view mode. The biggest letdown, and one of the reasons why I haven't used it as much as I could, is the fixed display. As a macro photographer, shooting close to the ground is really difficult with the 6D.

I have been vlogging with a 6D (not an mk or mk2, just the 6D) for some time now. And I can tell you that while the image quality is incredible, it really can be a daunting camera to use due to lack of simple features that make vlogging easier. The first being the lack of continuous auto focus (or even a semi decent autofocus system in general). When I'm shooting handheld I have to autofocus blindly and hope that it's on point. And any shots where the subject is moving in between the depth of field are basically out of the question when you are self shooting. The other major obstacle is the lack of a flip screen monitor, for similar reasons... Vlogging is mostly shooting yourself with both handheld and tripod shots. And without an ability to monitor those shots (unless you get an external monitor, start having cables wired up, etc) I really end up loosing a lot of footage due to the fact that I could't see what was in the frame / field of focus while I was shooting. All in all, I definitely would have bought a different camera if I did it all over again.

The 6d is a great camera. Long time user of the original 5d (classic) and that old still produces amazing images (almost film like) Using the 6d opens up a new world to me(!) It truly feels like the real succesor to the original 5d. Image quality is great and use the high iso noise reduction. At highest setting it works wonders. The 6d looks a bit more digital compared to the original 5d but using it makes it so much more fun. A lcd screen you can actually look at. Higher ISO. On the 5d 800 is pretty as high as you want to go. On the 6d 3200 still looks amazing. Silent shutter is a big plus. Battery life is still amazing and the light weight is a bonus. I tried a 24-105 4 L IS on the 5d but inside it was too slow. Outside in good weather is was great. Now with the 6d I can use the 24-105 again but also inside :)
It is the camera that I use to document my family. The shots I made with the 5d en 6d speak to me the most. I also use a X-Pro2 with primes but the images look a bit different. A bit harsher. That camera is great for everything but those Canoj images have that different feel to it.

If anything, the 6D is the sole culpirit for my having finally taken the plunge of breaking my 15-year tenure of Canon cropped bodies, (started in now-remote Dec 2005, when I first took my newly-acquired 10D for a stroll on a chilling evening around Hammersmith Bridge in London), a tenure which consisted of my owning at one time or another around three 10D, one 30D, one 40D and two 50D bodies (strangely, no 20Ds!) and which was only once interrupted by my using an APS-C 1D body for the most of 2007.
TBH, I have just acquired said 6D body (in mint-condition and with a considerably low shutter count of 28K actuations, allegedly from a musician, not a photographer) and am counting down the days till I lay my hands on it! Whic, unfortunately, will only happen after this "pandemic" Christmas 2020, unfortunately! Boo-hoo! No fretting though - am still a happy bunny!

I was thinking of the Sony alpha range of cameras as they take nice pics but reading up on them lots of trouble and with many more modern makes I read up on so I’m sticking to my beasty 6D for now and saving my money to buy lenses for it instead.
