    This is about the only truly useful review on the 6D. Most are very basic and boring. You cover far more in-depth information. Great video.

      Daniel Batts Completely agree, the other reviews left me with the impression that the camera wasn't worth the time or money. This video showed how much of a sweet camera this actually is.

      The only real complaint most people have is the small number of focus points. Considering the large number of points even much cheaper cameras have it does make you question why Canon decided to choose fewer. Unless you're doing action photos where you need to use group points to capture fast subjects, then in my opinion the number of points is more convenience than need. We only had one area to focus in the center back in the film camera days and it worked just fine.

    Thank you for the in depth review.I must have watched it a dozen times before upgrading from my t3i to the 6D.After 6 months of use in sun, clouds, rain, snow, starry nights,fog and studio this camera is a solid workhorse.

    This is the video that convinced me to pick up a 6D a couple years ago. It's still my favorite camera to this day, even though I'm currently using an A7 II. Even though the Sony is technically superior on paper, it doesn't meet my needs as much as the 6D did.

    Best review out there, the info you provide is exactly what needed. After viewing this review for at least 20 times, I've upgraded from 600D to 6D about 3 month ago and o-m-g mind blow. This is an amazing camera, the IQ is amazing, the ISO capabilities are incredible, low light photography gets much easier and better by far, this camera is an ISO monster compared to APS-C censors. Also, for me, the added weight feels much much better while operating the camera handheld, feels much sturdier and secure. 6D is a great camera, if you're thinking to get one - get one, you won't regret.

    Great review! Love my 6D, and I love the iPad app for night photography. It's like tethering to a computer, easy to review the shot and adjust exposure without fiddling around in the dark with a headlamp. Especially great if you do any light painting. On one occasion in a mosquito infested area I was able to sit in my vehicle and shoot remotely as the sun set while reviewing each shot as I took it.
    Keep up the good work.

    Hobbyist photographer here. "Upgraded" from the T3 to the 7D and with my purchase last night I'm onto the 6D. Thanks for doing a real world review from field tested experience. This video helped me make my decision when I watched it a few weeks ago and I really appreciate it. Fellow hiker here too; just did my first time lapse w the 7D in Yosemite this August! Looking forward to many experiences with my new L glass and 6D. Thanks again so much happy shooting!

    My Canon 6D is a tank. I bought it new when first released. It has been my primary camera for three solid years of Architectural Documentation type photography in/around historic buildings. It is superb in all weather - wet and sub-zero conditions. Battery life is also excellent. This camera's abilities in very dark conditions is exceptional. Only now - four years later, is this camera going to get a well earned break and become the backup to a new primary 5DmkIV body. 6D makes an awesome travel camera.

    Man, what a review. Fantastic!
    The best HD video I have seen. Full of detail and wonderful photos and most importantly, shooting data. I have been shooting with a 7D and just bought a 6D for the censor. My 6D was meant to be the second camera...but I can't see that remaining that way. I like to point my camera skywards(well towards the horizon really) for some astro work. But I always found the ISO range, well a bit narrow. But the 6D...different planet. Thanks again guys.....Awsome!! Regards Peter

    Thanks for posting this, as it helped me decide to purchase the 6D. I recently upgraded from a Rebel t4i to the Canon 6D, and I am in love. It's quite a bit heavier, but the image quality is amazing. I paired it up with a low end shoulder support (I mainly use it for video), and couldn't be happier.

    Thing is, I've owned both 5D III and 6D. What it comes down to is this, the 5D Mark III is for those who aren't shooting professional sports but shooting fast paced objects, moving, tracking subjects.. and need that 1DX 61-AF System but with the quality of 22.3mp for the quality. The 6D is purely a camera for taking awesome pictures and without the AA Filter that the 5D has, the 6D benefits from a tad bit sharper images although it lags in video performance with moire. Same case with D800 and D800E, one has the AA and other doesn't for sharper images. I first owned the 6D with 24-105mm than went to 5D with 24-105mm. Surprisingly, one of the first things I noticed was the noise on the 5D compared to the 6D. After owning it for months, I figured the 5D III was too much camera for me, so I went back to 6D. The image quality is just perfect, focus for me is typically manual so idc about 11-AF. I shoot a lot at night, so again, 6D wins. The biggest advantage 5D has is the capability to shoot 1080p in ML RAW because of the CF card, where as 6D is stuck at like 1800x460 or whatever is chosen.

    This was a great video. I would love a 6D! I do worry about the weight. I have a rebel sl1 and do real estate photography and really think this would give me better pictures!!! Sigh... I look forward to seeing more videos. One thing I'd love to see in youtube videos is actually looking at a venue, talking about what ISO and f stop, shutter speed to use.. How to make those amazing photos!!!

    • @kaylabeshears5512
      @kaylabeshears5512 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Susan Ostler When I went from a Rebel T5 to a 6D, I had to exercise my arms a bit to get used to the weight. I also mainly had a 70-200mm lens on it too though. My guess is you'll be alright in no time. The image quality increase is beyond worth it! If you don't have a 6D yet, I suggest going for it. Especially if you do photography for a living.

    I was on the fence about whether to buy the 6d or not. I'm mainly using it for portrait photography, so it seems perfect! I'm glad to see that you had done landscapes, because I do love to travel just to take photos. Thank you for a great review.

    Thanks for your in-depth review. I purchased a 6D last year (2022) purely for photography (not video). It's fantastic, and must be one of the best used buys around in 2023 with the attractive price point, amazing sensor and robust build quality.
    Since I don't do sports or fast-moving wildlife photography, because of the relative shortcomings you mention, the 6D is a perfect camera for me 🙂

  • @slamming
    @slamming 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Good review, thanks. Im inclined to disagree on the "wifi being useless" part though. I find the EOS utility comes in handy when framing low angle shots, and it lets you use bulb mode without have to buy a separate remote. It's also handy when you dont have a PC handy and you want to send a photo to someone's phone etc.
    Overall, great review. I echo the comments about the long shutter speeds yet frozen motion in some of your shots (eg the grass was pin sharp). On a seperate note, are you using a 10 stop filter for most of those shots?

    • @breakthroughphoto
      @breakthroughphoto  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you, the wifi can be useful as a simple shutter release. I was more referring to the lack of an intervalometer! : )
      As for the images with long exposure with something sharp, let me know which images you're referring to and I'll send you the image via email with the EXIF data.

    Great video! Thank you for the data on most photos. I only wish you had the information about which neutral density filter you had used. I do astrophotography and just moved up from canon t5i to the 6D. and there are features with the t5i I will miss. Tilt out screen would be one. Helpful when shooting straight up. The t5i touch screen would be another. And I wish they had put an internal intravolumeter in the camera. Someone should tell them how many of us use their cameras for time lapse photography. Thank you for the video. Keep up the great work. You give the rest of us something to strive for. Jerry Walker.

    Best review I have seen out of the 50 different ones I have probably watched/read in anticipation and education before purchasing this camera.
    That said, I have three questions.
    1.) Do you love this camera?
    2.) What are your "go-to" lenses?
    3.) What happened to the website you directed us to at the end of the video? I was really hoping to download a PDF of that book.

    Around 18:00 you're taking about WiFi capability. Although for landscape photography you may not see the use for it, but if you're shooting weddings or an event, the ability to use the Canon Connect application (at least for Android Devices) work great and you can post to social media quickly and with Adobe Creative Cloud, you also have Lightroom so you can sync your photos immediately for backup and post processing so during a reception, you could even have a quick slideshow going.

    Great Review Graham! I am what one might call an overly techy photo enthusiast and I constantly flirt with upgrading to full frame, but haven't made the jump yet. I'm toying with either a Nikon d610, the 6D shown here, or maybe waiting for a 6d mark II. Since its been almost 3 years since the 6d release, I'm wondering if its worth waiting. I shoot a sony a57, so no glass worth saving. I'm currently pursuing my graduate degree in HCI (UX) and i was really impressed with your reference to SEO and geo-tagged images! It's really refreshing to watch a review with someone who is as tech savvy as you and yet down to earth enough to appreciate.

    Very nice review. I don't have the 6D - yet - but I have rented one a couple of times recently. The only area where I absolutely disagree with you is regarding the Wifi. I realize your review is a couple of years old, and you may have changed your thinking. And I suppose it depends on the type of photography you do. But I find the Wifi to be an absolute blast. I use my android phone to both review my shots and control the camera in certain situations and it has worked perfectly each time. I would like to try it out with a tablet. For some shots it makes the lack of an articulating screen a moot point. Canon has updated its app since your review, but there are several other third party apps available that also let you control the camera even while taking videos (which the Canon app does not).

    The 6D has always suffered from a bit of snobbery I feel as its not a 5DIII which is a shame because I love my 6D!
    As you say in the review for low light and landscapes it is fantastic. Incidentally, I have shot a football match and coupled with fast glass the autofocus was spot on so do not despair if your subject moves!

    Very good and honest review. Although the Wifi on the 6D isn't great, I often use it at party's so people can check there pictures directly at my Macbook (or for myself to check if the image is in-focus).

    I would agree with all your review. I've had a canon 6D for nearly a year and have basically come up with very similar results, apart from my pictures. You have beaten me hands down there but I will be there one day (maybe a year or two) lol.

    Thank you very much! You really just skipped the boring parts and showed what's really interesting! Thanks again so much!!! By the way, do you use gradient filters? If yes, which ones and if not, which filters do you use? They give great effects! Are you going to do a review more leaning towards videographers or it's something that doesn't interest you?
    Great video, many thanks.

      Hey Khaled,
      Thanks! I'm glad you could find it useful.
      I do use Graduated Neutral Density filters. Here's what I'm currently using:
      1. 3-stop Reverse GND: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/615228-REG/Singh_Ray_R_63_100_x_150mm_Daryl.html/BI/19568/KBID/11943/kw/SIRGND346/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xSIRGND346
      2. 3-stop Soft GND (Galen Rowell)
      3. 2-stop Soft GND (Galen Rowell)
      As for the video aspect, I do plan on doing a comprehensive video review of the 6D and 5D3, however until then you can view 6.1GB of video content from the 6D here, download it, and check it out for yourself!

    Awesome review, I own my 6D for about a year now and think it's one of the most underrated cameras out there. But i'm not a PRO shooter so I don't blame anyone if the camera doesn't meet their requirements. With what I don't agree is that the WI-FI is useless, I use it all the time as a remote and as a backup when my mac is not with me. So I can't see why you don't like the feature.

  • @SpotfireVideo
    @SpotfireVideo 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video! I've had my 6d for a couple months now, purchased mainly for video use. I have to agree that the wi-fi is almost useless. I did use it as a remote trigger for some firework shots, and it worked quite well. But the lack of an intervalometer and the inability to use it for video is disappointing. That, and the inability to set exposures longer than 30 seconds within the camera, I think is by design. I guess they don't want to give it away for free when they can sell a wired version for $150.
    I love the camera, but I hate when engineering decisions are made by the marketing department.

      Thanks for the comment!
      As for the more than 30-seconds in-camera, I believe that if it did go beyond 30-seconds it would no longer classify as a camera and instead it would be a cinema device... not sure what the specifics are here but they're pretty meaningless to consumers and to me, which sucks as the camera CAN meter longer than 30 seconds... : (

    Graham, great review. I bought one (6D) and I am thrilled with it's performance. I also just bought the Canon 16-35mm f4 and will be testing it out this coming weekend. BTW I also bought your X2 CPL - so looking forward to putting that to test this weekend too.

    Great review! Also being an owner of the 6D I have actually used both the remote shooting and the wifi picture downloading (But only those two), both on Android. I think Canon has a pretty solid Android app available, and for a quick share of images where you're not close to a computer, this is a great feature!

    • @breakthroughphoto
      @breakthroughphoto  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mark,
      Thanks!
      Actually the iOS app looks quite a bit better than on my android, but both lack an intervalometer which is what I was specifically referring to the lack thereof in the video.
      It really just amounts to these guys forgetting it or not wanting to put a developer on the clock for two to three hours max.

      Even so, as a simple remote with preview I think it's quite useful. But yeah, and I'd love to make a better app for them. You get me the API, I'll code it up. Deal? :)

    Enjoyable real world review. I had saved up for the 6D Mk2 but instead went for this which was at half the price. It fills perfectly the gap that isn't covered by my crop sensor bodies, and when paired with my full frame glass, produces superb results. I recently rented and tried out the Mk2 and found it to be inferior in low light photography, quite an eye opener! At the current price point this would make a viable introductory camera, not just an upgrade!

    Great very helpful review. One thing though about WIFI. I think it's critical on out locations where makes it able to instantly check for detailed qualities of a picture. Too many times after coming back to my desk I kept noticing somewhat soft edges and other tiny things that are basically un-noticeable on 3"view finder. Instant check turned out to be a virtual life saver even if it takes few minutes to set it up. It's ALL SO WORTHY!

    Came to the 6D from a 7D.
    It's not as great to hold and use but the image quality is just spectacular and that's why i like it.
    Hate the slow Wi-Fi though have a grip on the 7D and that Wi-Fi is way superior!
