I bought a used 6D in like 2016 as a second camera to my 5Diii and ended up liking the 6D so much that I sold my 5Diii and bought two more 6D’s (filming haircuts I needed multiple angles). Years later after “upgrading” through canon’s early RF offerings and feeling let down in many ways (less intuitive ergonomics and button layouts, cumbersome auto focus navigation, and seeing the world through an EVF meant I could only perceive what the sensor could) I decided to find another 6D- and it is glorious. I didn’t even notice that canon had lost their legendary colors until after I went back to the 6D- my R6 shifts toward magenta in areas where the 6D shifts toward teal, and the “defects” in terms of dynamic range and noise actually have a really nice aesthetic. Now I grab my R6 when I have to get a photo but I grab my 6D when I want to get a photo.
Thanks for this Andrew, interesting post that, i thought I could see a colour shift in the R6 photos I had seen, im sure its a good workhorse camera though. 6d is special.
Those are exactly my findings as well although to be fair I started to see colors go downhill with the 5D4. After that it feels that Canon has been on a trial-and-error approach with the R models in terms of color rendition/sensor spectral response. I too have the R6 (and R8). Sure, as tools they are super easy to work with but the files don't make you smile anymore. Too cold and clinical rendering. Give us the old look back Canon! The look you once were famous for. This video inspired me so I got myself a 6D again (I used to have one back in 2014) and only now when shooting with it (and as you mentioned, compare it with modern Canons) I realize I have been missing it...A LOT! Love it! Found one in mint condition with just 12 000 clicks and I plan to use it until it falls apart.
@@henrycartier I had been short term owning 6D’s because they were cheap and dependable, but the specs on paper are underwhelming so it’s easy to underrate them. Just a few weeks ago I finally bought a forever 6D, one that I plan to own until it crumbles. I’ve recently posted a video about my thoughts on it if you’re into nerding out on camera opinion videos 😁
My 6D is an absolute joy to use. I have had mine for 6 years and it's like my 3rd eye when I'm out using it. Use it for landscapes, portraits, and have also shot a couple of weddings with it. It has never put a foot wrong. Absolute workhorse!!
I agree 100%! The Canon 6D v1 and one of the BEST cameras Canon has ever made. I have used it for many years professionally, put over 158k on the shutter and its still blazing. EXCELLENT image quality. Its not full of features but images are what its all about. The low light ISO performance is crazy. I have used it plenty of times for sports, especially night sports for the ISO performance.
@Slurpee I have always believed this but 6d original is one of the greatest cameras ever built. I believed this because when the 6dii launched and they were compared, I could instantly tell the differences in the pictures. I knew which one was the og 6d. That's when I knew it was impressive.
"I don't wanna be moving the focus points like I'm playing Pacman" BRILLIANT! I agree 100% and LOVE this camera, even with the weak points that I can easily work around. It continues to be my workhorse for reference gathering photoshoots (especially for those around a campfire during blue light hour), and painting captures... man, that sensor! Well done, you've earned a new subscriber Martin, thanks for the clarity in a "It's new, so I gotta have it, even if the new features don't matter to me" world.
I absolutely love my 6d mark 1 , it's my workhorse.. i shoot weddings primarily Using it from 2014.. the shutter gave up on me after 220k actuations.. I got a new shutter mechanism put into it. Very happy with my 6d.
Better late than never to comment. I still use my 6D and remains, to this day, my favourite camera to take for travel and event photography. The key hallmarks of the 6D is how simply and close-to-the-metal it is. The focusing system in no BS and simple. I don't need to dig into the menus to make the dang thing work. My focus is on composition and the exposure triangle. no on fancy AF modes to deal with. I'm seeing 6D's everywhere on marketplace and gumtree; if it breaks or stops working, I can easily get it replaced. I've not been not kind on my Canon 6D and it still refuses to die. I also own a 5D mark IV, and I still find myself grabbing this camera over my 5D-IV. Hell it takes better pictures with a 40mm pancake than the way over priced X110V from Fuji (Yeah I own that too).
Love your real world, aesthetic focused reviews Martin. Have my 6D sitting in a draw, but you have convinced me to dig it out and get it working again!
Totally agree the 6D mk1 and only the mk1 will be the classic camera to chase in the future ‘ and prices will definitely go up for this Japanese built Beautiful camera’ Thanks for the review.
The 6D was my first Full frame Camera. I use it for Nightscape Landscape Astrophotography. It's never failed me. I like it so much I bought 2nd and had it Astro Modified. It truly is a Photagraphy camera.
Martin, you are a camera treasure trove for us that cannot afford the R5's, Z9's, A9's etc. This is where the majority of us sit in affordability and no one does reviews like yourself on these. Thank you for your work!
Thank you, you just have to remember photography is the same regardless of camera you still do exactly the same things and make the same choices. It’s all you, newer gear just makes working life easier and a photographer, not better.
Love this camera! It’s my main camera for everything! It’s fairly quiet, great image quality, lightweight, and great lowlight performance. For weddings I use my 5D MKIV, and the 6D pairs well as my second camera.
I pre ordered and received the 6D on launch day. Shot with it all over the world. One of the best cameras I ever owned. Sold it in 2016 and recently bought another second hand. It feels good to be back.
I'm at the start of my professional career as a photographer and I chose the 6D over the 5D Mark 2 . After 3 years owning and shooting with it, I love it, especially for portraits and people.
I agree with the focus points, I usually need one in the middle and recompose, that's far better than some erratic eye focus on newer cameras and it makes me feel in control instead of being a victim of technology.
I own the 6D when it came on the market. It is such a nice camera to work with, I always use aparture and I never had any problem with it. The only "issue", it is bigger with a lens on it then for example a Fuji. But I love this camera! Thanks for your nice vlog.
I love your videos man. Your gear reviews are so honest and I really like how you try and encourage people to see the value in older gear or stuff we already have. G.A.S is a real problem lol Anyway I used to have a 6d. While I haven't tried out a lot of cameras I miss the image sensor on that 6d so much. It took such nice photos and I felt like I could shoot anywhere anytime and recover the most under exposed images. I gotta find another one day.
@@MartinCastein unsure if your audience might be interested or if it’s just me, but i would love videos “how x was made@ - ie photo at 00:33. LOVE it :) it is magical! ❤
@@eugeniab2990 thanks, I will have courses coming later on various aspects might cover this too but im glad you liked it! I want to do a lot more of me actually shooting with a background of reviews.
I truly love my 6D camera. Then I upgraded to the 6d Mark2 because of "better af, split touching screen etc" BUT nothing happend with it, no emotional connection. It's just like a colleague at work. On the opposite, when I take back my beloved 6D in hands, I feel like meeting a true friend again. I just love its sensor and the old way to shoot with a trusty Dslr .
This video was what put me over on deciding to pull the trigger on a 6d. I am just into portait and stills, and I noticed that what is being marketed is 1) Megapix that literally outperform human eye limits, and are only useful if you want to blow up the frame to the size of a cargo vessel. 2) stuff for vlogging. I do neither. I realized when I started studying Pete Souza's work, that he was using pretty "pedestrian" setups that were really pretty much middle of the road. Not the latest and coolest. So when I heard you say all this, and the post you put up is pretty legit, I knew 6d was going to be my camera.
After having used several 5D Classics and Mkiis, and lately mostly fuji, I recently bought a 6D mki. It’s like a super upgrade of a 5D Classic! Same nice colors and skin tones from the Classic, that I prefer over the 5D mkii. But also more modern than the 5D mkii. Thinking of getting rid of all my fuji gear and go all in on DSLRs.
A little bit in the same boat. I have an XT3, bought a T7i and find myself enjoying the T7i more. Now I'm looking for a FF. I had a Canon EOS R and Sony a7iii before, didn't really like them (mainly the Sony) and got the XT3. I think a FF Canon camera will be beautiful and fun, and I have nothing against older bodies. ✨
I’ve had the 6D for some years. It’s an excellent camera. I do concert photography and I’m still amazed how you lock focus in very dark conditions and get crazy clean B&W pictures on iso 6400.
I love my 6d I brought it secondhand as a grey import just after it came out. I shot beauty and dance portfolios with the 50m 1.8 and now use it as a travel camera with the absolute crap 28mm f2.8 and it bloody works a treat.
Tried a lot of cameras and simply liked my 6D the most. Took me a while to learn how to get the best out of it, but when I did it was perfect. 100% the camera i most regret selling
You have this rare ability to carry some kind of depth in your art and that's why I'm huge fan of yours. This depth surfaces in the way you talk too, I find myself mesmerized by your perception and attention to beautiful details. I decided to go back to photography and you helped me decide which camera I want for myself. I've got 6D! Looking brand new, only 10k on the shutter, all for only $495, can you believe it?! I'm so excited to begin my journey with it! :D I'll keep watching your videos to become better photographer, so please keep doing what you're doing, because it's amazing and inspiring! ❤
I just did a portrait session tonight with the 6D. I also shot an annual, night-time, Christmas market with no flash and running max ISO. I can clean up the images in post to be quite usable. I do appreciate several aspects of my 80D. However, the 6D still rocks in so many ways. I traded off my Sony A7RII because I realized that I was not going to be shooting and printing wall-sized prints. AND, battery life sucked. I can take the 6D out, shoot a few hundred shots, set it on the shelf, grab it and go shoot something else, do that several times before I need to charge the battery. It's just a great, easy-to-use workhorse.
You speak sense, and thats dificult to find on youtube in 2022. Proper reviews with nice photos are becoming rare too, charts and brick walls are so BOOORING. Thanks!
even when I am not a canon shooter I agree with the spirit of your review... I have one of the best EYE tracking AF camera system in the market right now... but.... I'm still using center focus point and recompose I seldom use the AF system. cheers
I bought my 6D new back in 2016. Absolutely love it I use it primarily for night photography. Long exposure/ light painting, all sorts.. The colours this camera produces are gorgeous. I've been keeping a close eye on newer cameras from different brands. The R6 tempted me. But it's lacking a couple of things I'd like. The R5 for my needs is overkill. So I'll carry on as I am for now..👍
Its perfect for night photography really, the r6 looks good but i think its overpriced for what it is personally. It will be a good deal i expect when its replacement comes out.
I watched a few of your 6D videos and ended up getting one. I started filming and taking photos of local fast food places and I have a 77D which I used for both video and photos. However, it was annoying taking it out of the cage I used when filming. Getting a 6D in 2023, almost 2024 for commercial work so to say is crazy. But this camera achieves absolutely everything in terms of taking nice photos. Really really pleased with the results for $300AUD.
I bought mine here in Japan 2nd hand 2 years ago (+ both canon and some vintage Takumar lenses). Just recently I checked how many actuations it had ,and it was only 16K!! After 2 years I have been using it! Thinking to get a 5D classic also, after watching your videos actually :)
I totally agree with you, I have 2 canon 6D k 1 with canon 24-105mm f4 and canon 70-200mm is f2.8 version 2. I was retired an learn photography from last 3 years as hobbies. I take portrait, wedding, events.. with natural lighting. I think that my gear sets covered all of my needs. Thanks for your video...
Bought Canon EOS 6d when it was launched, been looking to upgrade but can't see anything better, it just works and does everything I need, I agree it's ideal for portraiture and landscape, I don't video and so don't need 4k, after 10 years of using it a -12c, pouring rain and hot weather it still feels brilliant to use.
I used my mk1 6d to take pictures of two models (male and female) The finger prints showed up on the female's fingertips, from around 10ft distance, while the 51 bristles on the guy's chin (I counted them) showed up at the same distance. Both were well lit by studio lamps. I think this was due to the 6D's sensor being made up of pixels that measure 4.2micron square each, while on the 1D-X I have, the pixels measure 6.2microns square. So the 6D with SMALLER pixels is taking a more detailed look at the world. It sounds wrong I know, but the smaller the pixels the less detail they LOSE, it's not all crammed into a few bigger pixels. There's a reason an insect for example, has many facets too it's compound eyes. Big facets (i.e. fewer) will take in LESS detail for close work. My 6D can certainly take pictures of a metal or glass surface, showing full detail of fingerprints, so I have to take care to clean anything properly before shooting something.
Been using it since 2012 and still find it hard to make a decision to upgrade the body. It gets the job done without any surprises. I mainly shoot weddings, birthdays and portraits.
Yeah, love your videos about older DSLR. I´m using a 6D since years for family and stills. Bought used and now about 120.000 shoots + videos. Very study camera, small and lightweight with a lot of picture quality. The 6D haven´t much features, but the basics are nearly perfect. Center point AF ist strong, handles also difficult situations like shooting thru sunglasses with sun in the back of the model. The outer AF works fine, also for nailing eyebrows. With magiclantern also near to feature list of modern cameras, also as a nice video camera (with manuell focus peaking). Users have to learn good working scenarios for the AF, sometimes it´s hunting a lot. That´s the main point against modern mirrorless.
After watching your video I was contemplating about getting one but the current price around 400 for a good one made the decision harder. The other day I found one for 250 in good shape and pulled the trigger. On its arrival I found out that it not only looks great but the shuttercount was only 20.000. I used it now for 2 weeks, getting used to it. I don't regret the purchase, love the colors and the rendering. I am really amazed on how easy it is to work the raw files. Low light performance is just excellent. First thing i did was to micro-adjust the 6D for all my EF L lenses. The autofocus is great, maybe 3-4 out of 100 out of focus, the rest is spot on. What a great camera for the price ! I still use my EOS R in situations where it is convenient to have all the features it has.
I bought Canon 6D when it was released nd still have it. I am holding on it. Lens that I have is 50mm 1.8,70-200 F4,17-40 f4,35mm F2 sim. Canon RP I do have it with just one lens 24-205 F4 color is somewhat flat. Canon 6D is not for video I use iPhone for small clips video.
Great vid. I've had a 6D since the beginning of the pandemic and even buying a Fujifilm X-T20 a year or so later, didn't detracted me from loving this SLR. So much so that I ended up selling up the mirrorless camera 6 moths later, as I concluded that, unlike Canon SLRs' interface, its sheer number of buttons, coupled with its small size, were literally getting in the way, as I kept pressing most of them by mistake while shooting. So getting back to an olde SLR's slick design was what I'd been actually missing. Back to the video itself, these are just my two cents, but I honestly think the background music is a tad too loud - specially for people whose first language is not English, as it is my case. Even more so when you consider that, for this kind of 'podcast video' - where what's being said matters more than what's being shown - so, doing something else while listening to them is usually the case (at least for me), subtitles won't make much of a difference.
My 6D arrived a couple of days ago from MPB. £360 in lovely condition! - 2 things immediately struck me about it. 1. It does not feel cheap or plasticky compared with my five 5D3. It has the same solid quality feel about it. 2. With back button AI Servo focusing the outer focus points seem to find the iris much better than I was expecting. For safety’s sake though, I will practice focus/recompose with the central point. Also - lovely colourful RAW files! 😊
hi, i'm also looking to purchase a 6D, and MPB is also where i'm thinking of buying it from. I know they give different ratings to cameras based on how used they are. I saw one for around 350 euros which is in "well-used" condition, meaning it's pretty much as low as you can go. I'd like to know what condition your camera was in and if buying a heavily used one is worth it. Thanks!
@@tudorzZzZzZz Mine is in nice clean condition with a shutter count of about 14.500. There was no strap but I bought a nice genuine Canon one for £7.50 (inc post) from Ebay.
Great video! I can confirm that your opinion is correct. I've owned 6D for a decade now and ten years later I still do all my digital photography with it. If it brokes down some day I'll probably just get another one lol.
Getting a 6D tomorrow. Seems to be in great shape. I will be able to leverage my vintage glass fully now 😁👍. It seems to do well in the video department too. Thanks for the video!
I do like the quiet shutter these have and also the 600d nikon for the same reason. I sold the nikon due to no uncompressed raw (not that important really) and kept the 6d. Now sold both and use the RP and A7III. Had to buy the RP because even with expensive adapters there is still nothing like a canon lens on a canon body. One I will never sell is the 5d classic, it has few real compromises for me and in some ways beats the RP (8000th mechanical shutter for one).
What a perfect and exact way to explain how good te Canon 6D mark 1 is even now in 2022 . I have the 6D mark 2 and I don't think the sensor is as good as the mk 1 personally . Yes the mk 2 has a flip out screen and better video capabilities but if I want to do video I use my canon m50 or my 80D all of which are great photo cameras too . Great video Martin and some excellent 6D pics too.
@@MartinCastein Thank you Martin. I do use the 6D mk2 for general photography but when I get that 6D mk 1 in my hands with the sigma 150 - 600 lens attached its an absolute beast for bird photography and the images are excellent. I am waiting for the Canon EOS R7 to be released to change from my M50 and 80D .
Just purchased a 6d m1, a used ad200 and a new tt600 with x2t trigger today, 2023 4th April, am so positive about the works I'll get done with this equipment. I'd use some tips and tricks.
I can't wait to go from my 200d to a 6d, I don't care that its 6 yrs older than the 200d its going to make a difference to my nightscape and night street photography
you will love it, great render, has great ISO, great colors, build like a tank you dont have to worry much AF is a bit crappy with some lenses, very good with other lenses (L) , but there are the workarounds, like center focus and re-frame
Great advice as usual. When I've switched from Apsc to Full Frame, was impossible to found a 6D mk1 at decent price used, so I've bought the 6D mk2. I know is slightly worse in dynamic range, but I love the tilting touch screen, I'm a landscape photographer with a passion of "micro-landscapes" (composing with mushrooms, leaf, branches...) with a good old EF 50mm macro f2.5 bought used (yes is not a true macro, but is perfect for close-up)
Hi Riccardo, the only reason i never mention the 6dii is simply because i have never owned or used one. i expect its excellent though and youve found and good and interesting lens to go with it. Seems like a good combination to me!
@@MartinCastein Hello Martin, it is understandable because your advice is always based on your real experiences and therefore very valid. And yes, I'm very happy with the 6D mk2, my main lens is a EF 24-70 f4 L paired with a very good copy of EF 70-300 f4.0/5.6 IS USM II and of course the EF 50mm macro f2.5. Have a nice day !
I think the 6d is the best sensor they ever made where it shines the most is flash OCF. The 5d classic is amazing in natural light better than strobes and flash. I put the 5d markiii in the second spot and the better buy for wedding photographers because it’s good with flash strobes and amazing in natural light. 5d mark ii has a distinct look which is nice but not timeless. The 6f is also ver sharp almost like there isn’t a low pass but there is one. It’s very rare to find color master cameras. The d3s was great the d700. Newer bodies the GFX 50mp sensor is great and the new 100s as well.
Yes i agree with you i think the 6d had the best sensor at least for the price maybe the 1dx ii or iii is a better sensor im not sure though but the 6d mark 1 is right up there for sure.
Got a 6 d for 180£ in decent condition. Bought a second camera 5dmark iii for 280 and I’m ready to go 🤘 ( btw sold my A7 iii😅) Sometimes a stepping back is the way forward. Thanks for all the great content.
I dont mind the 9 focus points on the 6D since im using the back-button focussing. So i can focus on the eyes or a subject, release the back-button and move the camera up or down how i want to take the shot!
I have had 3 6Ds, I wanted to love them but they always disappointed with lacklustre files and noise, I only ever shot landscapes on them and had to give up in the end, the 5d mark ii has a far superior sensor and incredible image files straight out of camera, this is only my opinion though and if you love your 6d then good luck to you.
That’s unfortunate, I’ve had good experiences with both the 5d ii and 6d I have a couple of videos on the 5d ii for landscapes too. But at least you have what you are happy with now.
Hi Martin. Pursuant to my last comment, this insight of yours into the 6D helped me to make the move. I figured out the solution to justifying my recent 6D (classic 😉) purchasing decision as well. Sell the 7D mkII !. No new money required, both work cameras, pre tax dollars so deductable too, etc etc. She's settled!💪🏻💪🏻🤠 Now, I have to learn what you 6D experts already know. How to get my 6D to pump out the same glorious images I've come to love from my 5D's. Easiest camera decision I've ever made! Cheers 🍻 -Greg .
I’ve never owned a full frame camera before but just ordered a 6D from MPB to try out. I liked my Fuji’s but was fed up with the high cost of lenses and not happy with the low light performance. I’m just a hobbyist who ends up taking most of my photos indoors or at night so I’ve sold my Fuji’s (except an X10) and will give the 6D a try.
6D was my first FF camera - and I love it to death still. It’s even better with Magic Lantern Installed. I use back-button focus and just the centre focus point pretty much 95% of the time. Sadly my Sigma 24-105 got stolen. But it still works wonders with old M42 glass or with the humble 40mm pancake for a (somewhat) stealthy street and travel camera.
Hiya Martin really enjoyed this your straight forward uncomplicated approach is great for the newbee This is a camera I'd definitely consider down the line I'm still cutting my teeth with the 5d classic.. What a machine.. Do you think the 6d would work well with vintage lenses.. I've got a couple of Takumar primes and I'd like to try some FD mounts Keep up the great content mate.
I don’t think there is any need to get the 6d for you but I can’t see a problem as long as you have the right adapters. I wouldn’t jump on a 6d from a classic though unless you have something from it you really need.
After too much consideration, (and watching 3x this video) I just won a minty 6D for US $410 which I think is an awesome deal! Thanks for your awesome and very helpful input 👏🏼👏🏼
Quick Question, Martin. I've looked through your channel and found something (as a Nikon shooter) I was hoping you had a video on. That is, "in your opinion" some of the best portrait lenses you've used in the Canon ecosystem or any other system for that matter. If I decided to get a wild hair, and purchase a 5D classic or 6D mark 1, I saw a video for lenses on a budget, and that's great. I was just curious if you would do a review of some of your favorite lenses (any brand or all brands) and why you liked them - Yes, you did do one on the 50 mm. What do you think? Something that might interest you?
I am a photo hobby man :) my camera is canon 6d - I like it so much! It is more than enough for my needs, a very good photo camera! And not so heavy as full frame 5d series
I love my 6D!!! I was able to crack the LCD, but it will be changed out. I also have a 5D MK2 wich I really like, and a 70D for more action things. But I mostly shoot portraits. And as you say, that's where the 6D shines! I don't have the money to be running around buying 1D X's and stuff. But these 3 bodies does it for me. :)
Great review Martin and after reading some of the comments below I think this will be the camera to join my 70D which I love. If and when I start doing more event work I think I will also get a 5D Mark III purely for the piece of mind of it having dual memory slots.
good choice really, the 6d focus is kind of center focus point only but i think you will really like the files from it and over time you get some really special results from it.
Thank you for these videos. I just ordered this on Adorama, with the Canon 50m 1.8 and a TAMRON AF 17-50 2.8 XR. I will probably add an 85mm 1.8 to my kit as well. I am looking to get into portraits and wedding photography eventually. I started off tinkering with the 20D. Ready for my next big step. 🤞
I’ve had mine since it came out, and love it. My pictures are many times better in quality than friends who pay for new RF cameras. Only thing i miss is a flip screen, but I will gladly lay down in the mud for a great shoot :)
@martincastein like I’ve said before, your 6D videos have me strongly considering one asa second full frame Canon body. I have to say much of what you say about the 6D I feel about the 1100D/T3. It’s a cheap 12.2MP APS-C camera but I can’t argue with the quality of the images it produces with the 16-35 L f2.8 II USM. I find that I enjoy shooting that camera in jpeg more than I do in .CR2. Some of these older cameras produce an image that is hard to reproduce.
The Canon 6D is awesome all the way. There's nothing in photography that You can't do with this lovely piece of machinery. I will get my own tomorrow 12.5. SC only 2500! Canon 6D is the best low light performer that Canon ever produced. Street shooting at night with the 6D and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM is photography. The colours and sharpness are so good that the performance will be acceptable even in 2033. Canon made their best units from 2007-2017. The build quality on them are second to none. I have many. The 50D, 1D Mark IV, 1Dx Mark II and now the coming 6D.
@@MartinCastein your comments on dynamic range and improved focus over 5d mk2 sold me, not ready for Canon mirrorless yet when there’s reasonable third party lenses available I will it’s far to expensive at the moment
thank you for the effort and sharing. i have used my 6D for portraits and have been very pleased. i was hoping to use the 6D with the 70-200/4 as a 2nd camera (the first camera is the R w/24-70 2.8) at an event. what is your thought about the 6D at 6400 ISO? how about in servo mode? thanks in advance for any insights you can provide. thumbs up.
The 6d is an awesome camera !!!! Colors straight out of the camera are gorgeous. For me it will be perfect if he had 1/8000 for Big Aperture at day Time and 2 card slot to be more safe
My only wish with modern auto focus cameras is if that manufactures could include a decent focusing screen with split prism and the circular micro prism or similar to aid manual focusing. I realise this may be awkward with the focusing sensors as well, but I find manual focusing so much harder than when I had an OM1 years ago.
Hi still have my 6D mk1 and will never shop it ‘ people might forget when it was first announced Canon stated then it was the one and only smallest full frame on the market , street photography not a problem’ Thanks
Just won an auction on ebay for 6d mk1(body only) with bit less than 3000 shutter count(£325). So far I have been using Fuji xt2 and 4. Love those cameras to bits thanks to amazing jpg recipes. But lately I have been tempted to get some sort of FF camera. Couldn't afford getting second hand a7 III so your videos influenced me on getting 6d Mk1. Same day I won an auction on Canon ef 50mm f1.4. for £120. hopefully I will like it. And if yes next lens will be 85mm f1.8. For day to day I will still use my Fuji but I want to give a try to portraits with 6d.
Thx Martin for your review of the 6D. This one is on my radar to go along side my 5D Classic. Been watching the used market for a couple of weeks now and they can be purchased with a pretty low (sub20k) shutter count for around £400. 👍
@@MartinCastein I also looked on mpb and the only thing I didn't like was the fact that they seemed to use a generic photo for all the 6D's that I looked at (exactly the same wear, rub marks to base etc) Unless I am mistaken. I'll have another look to see if it's still the same. To be honest I don't mind buying off the bay as long as it's a one owner, low shutter count body. Just checked and photos are different so was maybe an issue my end with my phone not updating the images fast enough Martin. 👍 MBP have one available for £444, 5941 shutter actuations.
@@MartinCastein purchased one today, one owner, less than 16k actuation, unmarked. I'll be out this weekend with it for sure. I'm really looking forward to using it!! Appreciate your reviews as always!
@@MartinCastein iv actually bought a 5D 1, 6D, Fuji XT1 and lens plus a Fuji X100s off MPB over tha last number of yrs and honestly their service has been brilliant, iv had no complaints, really great to deal with and the best prices and backup, my go to before e bay. nice one on the 6D ive been telling people the same last few yrs ist a gem of a camera.
Martin, I need your help. I‘ve been a Nikon-Shooter with my D90 and I was happy with its capabilities. Somehow I changed to Canon and the results in landscape disappoint me. Crazy limitations in dynamic range. So now my question: Would you recommend a D600 over a 6d as a daily allrounder? I shoot street, landscape and people. Short: for travelling. Trank you so much!
Just purchased a 6d, what a brilliant little camera. Owning 2 x 5D's and a 550D, the 6D is now my top camera. Images are superb.
Hello there!
I have the canon 550d and I want to jump to the 6d.
How it was the diference for you between the 550d and the 6d?
@@slurpee5390 No comparison, 6D every time
I’m an original 6D launch pre orderer day 1! Love it
@Slurpee I have always believed this but 6d original is one of the greatest cameras ever built.
Hahaha thank you!
Used a pair of 6D's for years for weddings, events and portraits. Gorgeous camera with gorgeous images.
Thanks Andrew, the 6d is one of the best cameras produced by Canon imo.
I absolutely love my 6d mark 1 , it's my workhorse.. i shoot weddings primarily Using it from 2014.. the shutter gave up on me after 220k actuations.. I got a new shutter mechanism put into it. Very happy with my 6d.
Good, glad you replaced the shutter, too often people think the camera is dead then
Better late than never to comment.
I have shot the 6D and 6D II and they are both great cameras. I appreciate you taking the time and having the experience to be the reviewer.
A lot of people use it for night time photography as its just so good in low light.
Now I love my 6D MK1 even more. Thanks for the morale boost.
Love this camera! It’s my main camera for everything! It’s fairly quiet, great image quality, lightweight, and great lowlight performance. For weddings I use my 5D MKIV, and the 6D pairs well as my second camera.
perfect as a backup for weddings
I pre ordered and received the 6D on launch day. Shot with it all over the world. One of the best cameras I ever owned. Sold it in 2016 and recently bought another second hand. It feels good to be back.
its really excellent, no need to ever sell a camera like that.
I'm at the start of my professional career as a photographer and I chose the 6D over the 5D Mark 2 . After 3 years owning and shooting with it, I love it, especially for portraits and people.
thanks for your info!
Used a 6d mk1 to get into professional photography, absolutely loved every moment of it :)
I love your videos man. Your gear reviews are so honest and I really like how you try and encourage people to see the value in older gear or stuff we already have. G.A.S is a real problem lol
Anyway I used to have a 6d. While I haven't tried out a lot of cameras I miss the image sensor on that 6d so much. It took such nice photos and I felt like I could shoot anywhere anytime and recover the most under exposed images. I gotta find another one day.

I have the 6D Mark II and love it! My primary use is portraits and landscapes. I think it's a Canon's lovely little overlooked bargain.
So many people love the 6d ii, ive never used it but expect i would love it too.
This video was what put me over on deciding to pull the trigger on a 6d. I am just into portait and stills, and I noticed that what is being marketed is
1) Megapix that literally outperform human eye limits, and are only useful if you want to blow up the frame to the size of a cargo vessel.
How is it with noise? I'm looking to get one for live music/ weddings so low light is the main battle I'm fighting haha
I bought it week ago! What a change! FF rocks! Huge step up from my 40D.
Thank you so much that’s really kind of you to say! I hope you enjoy your 6d it’s such a great camera.
Thank you for this I’m upgrading from a T6 rebel and found a 6d for 350 US and you have convinced me to do it
Hope you enjoy it!
I purchased one just a few days ago, mint with under 1,000 shutter clicks.
Superb camera, excellent informative video!!
Thanks!
I appreciate that!
i love my canon 6d . i had it from 2016 and still amazing one
100% agree. that sensor is beautiful.
Great video very informative I use the 6D and it never fails to amaze me the great images that is able to produce!
even when I am not a canon shooter I agree with the spirit of your review... I have one of the best EYE tracking AF camera system in the market right now... but.... I'm still using center focus point and recompose I seldom use the AF system. cheers
I bought my 6D new back in 2016.
Absolutely love it
I use it primarily for night photography.
I would love to see a vid on how you do studio lighting. Brilliant!
I bought mine here in Japan 2nd hand 2 years ago (+ both canon and some vintage Takumar lenses). Just recently I checked how many actuations it had ,and it was only 16K!! After 2 years I have been using it! Thinking to get a 5D classic also, after watching your videos actually :)
wow you got a really good one there then!
Hi Tam, Thanks! yeah thats a good setup you have there for sure!
Good points.. Martin. Keep on the good work 😊
Bought Canon EOS 6d when it was launched, been looking to upgrade but can't see anything better, it just works and does everything I need, I agree it's ideal for portraiture and landscape, I don't video and so don't need 4k, after 10 years of using it a -12c, pouring rain and hot weather it still feels brilliant to use.
I love the 6d, i really think its the best value for money camera Canon ever made and has arguably the best sensor too.
Isn't that just resolution
I still own the Canon 6d since new.I also own the 5d mkiii and Mkiv. But I find myself
Picking up the 6d most of the time.
Thank you for this video.
You are welcome thanks for the comment!
Been using it since 2012 and still find it hard to make a decision to upgrade the body. It gets the job done without any surprises. I mainly shoot weddings, birthdays and portraits.
Hi! Your videos and reviews gave me the confidence to buy a 6d with a 50mm 1.8 lens just now off of eBay for less than 450 euro. Thank you!!
You are welcome hope you will be happy with it!
Canon 6D is not for video I use iPhone for small clips video.
what lens do you recommend to use with the 6D? maybe next you should make a video of your "special" lens.
I stopped using background music after this I’m aware wasn’t a good choice 👍
Brilliant review!!! 6D is a fantastic full frame camera!
Thanks JD, glad you liked it.
I know what you mean for sure
Between 6d and RP , which one would you prefer for still images ?
What a perfect and exact way to explain how good te Canon 6D mark 1 is even now in 2022 . I have the 6D mark 2 and I don't think the sensor is as good as the mk 1 personally . Yes the mk 2 has a flip out screen and better video capabilities but if I want to do video I use my canon m50 or my 80D all of which are great photo cameras too . Just purchased a 6d m1, a used ad200 and a new tt600 with x2t trigger today, 2023 4th April, am so positive about the works I'll get done with this equipment. I'd use some tips and tricks.
I can't wait to go from my 200d to a 6d, I don't care that its 6 yrs older than the 200d its going to make a difference to my nightscape and night street photography
you will love it, great render, has great ISO, great colors, build like a tank you dont have to worry much
AF is a bit crappy with some lenses, very good with other lenses (L) , but there are the workarounds, like center focus and re-frame
You have just made some fantastic points around the autofocus for me. Exactly what I needed when today its all more is more. But its not. Thankyou.
Bought a second camera 5dmark iii for 280 and I’m ready to go 🤘
( btw sold my A7 iii😅)
Sometimes a stepping back is the way forward.
Thanks for all the great content.
I dont mind the 9 focus points on the 6D since im using the back-button focussing. So i can focus on the eyes or a subject, release the back-button and move the camera up or down how i want to take the shot!
Great camera, very nice sensor. Nice direct controls. My only beef with this camera is that I cannot over- or underexpose in manual with auto iso.
Wow should I go for 5d ii instead of 6D. It's available even cheaper than 6D
@@classic1625 I think most people should go for the 6d ii.
She's settled!💪🏻💪🏻🤠
Now, I have to learn what you 6D experts already know. How to get my 6D to pump out the same glorious images I've come to love from my 5D's. Easiest camera decision I've ever made! Cheers 🍻 -Greg

hahaha thanks for that Kiwi Pics!
I adore my 6D. I've owned it for 10 years. If I'm shooting portraits or Events. I use it. If I'm shooting wildlife or sports. My 1DX mkII
Hiya Martin really enjoyed this your straight forward uncomplicated approach is great for the newbee
This is a camera I'd definitely consider down the line I'm still cutting my teeth with the 5d classic.. What a machine..
Do you think the 6d would work well with vintage lenses.. I've got a couple of Takumar primes and I'd like to try some FD mounts
Keep up the great content mate.
I don’t think there is any need to get the 6d for you but I can’t see a problem as long as you have the right adapters. I wouldn’t jump on a 6d from a classic though unless you have something from it you really need.
I use Takimar primes with my 6D and I super dig what I get.
After too much consideration, (and watching 3x this video) I just won a minty 6D for US $410 which I think is an awesome deal! Thanks for your awesome and very helpful input 👏🏼👏🏼
No problem! Well done you got an amazing deal there too!
My compliments on your excellent images shown in the video. Very nice indeed. Thanks for your honesty in your review. Best wishes!
Thanks John 🙏
Thank you Martin for sharing your knowledge!
You are welcome!
I still use my beloved 6D . When not using my 5ds I still love turning to my 6D mark I. It's a low light beast . I shoot landscapes.
I agree it handles low light so well!
The 50D, 1D Mark IV, 1Dx Mark II and now the coming 6D.
bought one after watching this, looking forward to using it, along with my 5d mk1 & 2
same cameras i have, you will be happy with it im sure.
@@MartinCastein your comments on dynamic range and improved focus over 5d mk2 sold me, not ready for Canon mirrorless yet when there’s reasonable third party lenses available I will it’s far to expensive at the moment
Unless you are getting paid then the benefits of mirrorless aren’t worth it and even then it’s debatable if you don’t do video
thank you for the effort and sharing. i have used my 6D for portraits and have been very pleased. i was hoping to use the 6D with the 70-200/4 as a 2nd camera (the first camera is the R w/24-70 2.8) at an event. what is your thought about the 6D at 6400 ISO? how about in servo mode? thanks in advance for any insights you can provide. thumbs up.
The 6d is an awesome camera !!!! Colors straight out of the camera are gorgeous.
For me it will be perfect if he had 1/8000 for Big Aperture at day Time and 2 card slot to be more safe
You have some stunning images
Thanks 🙏 kind of you
100%agree it's one of best ever cameras....if not the best if you consider value...it's incredible deal! Love your videos 💖
Thanks! It’s a great camera really like it
My only wish with modern auto focus cameras is if that manufactures could include a decent focusing screen with split prism and the circular micro prism or similar to aid manual focusing.
ALOT OF PEOPLE DONT KNOW HOW TO USE THIS CAMERA AT ALL. THIS CAM IS GOOD FOR EVEN VIDEO.
Thx Martin for your review of the 6D.
This one is on my radar to go along side my 5D Classic.
Been watching the used market for a couple of weeks now and they can be purchased with a pretty low (sub20k) shutter count for around £400.
👍
Yeah I’ve been looking on mpb recently it’s very good value for that price imo let me know if you go for one
@@MartinCastein I also looked on mpb and the only thing I didn't like was the fact that they seemed to use a generic photo for all the 6D's that I looked at (exactly the same wear, rub marks to base etc)
Unless I am mistaken. I'll have another look to see if it's still the same.
To be honest I don't mind buying off the bay as long as it's a one owner, low shutter count body.
Just checked and photos are different so was maybe an issue my end with my phone not updating the images fast enough Martin. 👍
MBP have one available for £444, 5941 shutter actuations.
Advantage with mpb is the 6 month warranty but it’s up to you. 🙂
