    So i decided to upgrade from the old TJM Snorkel to the new Safari Armax snorkel and ECU control unit,
    There were a few reasons why, the main one being some significant power gains for the mighty 200 series LC.
    I had spoken to the guys at Safari 4x4 engineering in Croydon and got some great information from them about the product.
    I told them i make TH-cam videos and would love the opportunity to record the install process so i could use it as an episode for you guys.
    Word got around to one of the owner that i was coming in and he had organised for hes head engineer to meet me on the day to run through a few of the finer details so i could put it into my video.
    Not only did they let me film it all but they went above and beyond with a few retakes here and there when i missed stuff.
    The main thing i know most of you will be interested in will be the Dyno runs, so i included all 3 runs
    1, standard with TJM snorkel,
    2, Standard with Armax snorkel
    3, Armax snorkel and Armax ECU control unit,
    It was amazing to see the work and technology that has gone into this product and i couldn't recommend it highly enough.
    Thank you to everyone at Safari for all the great work, love my 200 even more now,

    So it went from 139/364 @ with TJM to 146/386 with Armax snorkel, to 177/461with Armax & ECU. Nice

      Yep that’s exactly what it got. I wanted to show the difference between the 3 different setups. And I figured by showing the actual dyno run there’s no hiding any results. Good or bad.

      When you order one. Mention this video and they may offer a discount. Maybe.

    Hi Steve, the armax made a difference on mine too! Engine temps went down 3 degrees and power up slightly from the standard safari snorkel. Looks better too! Different note, I'll be in Melbourne on Friday for the 4x4 show, would be great to catch up and say hi if possible. Cheers Steve

    Hey Steve, thanks for the video and all the info mate! Have you noticed any differences in the characteristics of the Auto? Would you consider doing anything to improve the shift patterns via factory ecu remap or lock up kit ect? Cheers again...Serge.

    Also sounds like you have upgraded the exhaust, what system did you go with? Bit harder to get all accessories over here in NZ.

    Just be aware any change to performance regards to remapping or electronic chips if you are under warranty you won't have a warranty anymore

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remapping you definitely won’t have a warranty anymore.
      With the Safari unit they give you in writing the exact same warranty as Toyota for the remainder of your factory warranty.
      Plus a 150,000km drive train warranty in writing as well.

      @@Australian4x4Adventures have you ever thought about a torque converter lockup at all? I found this Fantastic for cooling down the transmission in sand and stops excessive torque converter flare when going up hills etc

      I have. But I don’t think the benefits are worth the cost. I don’t tow anything super heavy. And with the exhaust and tune ( Safari ) it holds gears 10 times better then standard form.

    The part I don't get is when he said tuning won't affect 'safety and reliability' [of the engine]! If it was so, why Toyota didn't do it? It's hard for me to believe that a smaller third party company knows more than a company that spends billions on the research and is in fact the designer of the car!

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s not that the smaller companies know more then Toyota.
      It’s 2 reasons why.
      1. Toyota need room to move for future models. They down tune motors so it easy to make more power from the same motor for upgraded models.
      2. Toyota are restricted heavily by emission laws in Australia and have to down tune to meet these laws.
      Most cars are capable of much more then from the manufacturer.

    Do you need to change your clutch to heavy duty one in 200 series? I'm saving up for Q4 to my 2017 76 series. I was told Q4 came with safety features too. Now after I saw your video, I have to look into Armax ECU more. Its really tempting.

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      200 series is auto so no clutch to upgrade really.
      I looked into the Q4 but compared to the Safari stuff. The Q4 is old tech. So many more capabilities with the safari. I’m stoked with my one.

    Hey could it work just as good with a normal Safari Snorkel Steve, just a thought

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wayne Lamb
      The tune is designed around the Armax snorkel because of the mass amount of air flow it creates and needs. It would still work but no where near as efficient. That’s why I changed mine.
      Thanks for the like and sub too. 👍

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I picked mine up at 100,000km. I’ve got 155k on it now and haven’t had a single issue to date.
      I think at long as you service them regularly then they just keep going.

  • @brad2442
    @brad2442 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did they actually change anything after having it on the dyno or did they use the default settings straight out of the box? I am going to get this for my Hilux but i'm hanging out for the in cab map switch to be released for the Hilux at the end of the year I heard.
    What i'm asking is do you need to run them on the dyno when installing the ECU or are the default setting spot on?

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Brad 244
      That was straight out of the box. Because of all of the inbuilt Safty features they tune them fairly high ( power and torque). And the ECU can pull power back to keep it safe.

    • @brad2442
      @brad2442 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate - I'm not sure if you were sponsored or not but what made you choose the Armax over the Unichip Q4 lets say?

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They did give me a discount because I was going to make the video and it would promote the product for them. But I preferred the safari over the Q4 because of the Safty features built in. The EGT probe was a massive advantage for me. Plus safari put it in writing that Factory warranty is not void from there product. And if it does cause damage. They cover all cost.
      It’s also newer technology. The Q4 was developed by safari and unichip 10 years ago and it hasn’t really changed

    • @rayhart1762
      @rayhart1762 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No Safari used the unchip and rebranded it dtronic. The UNICHIP Q4 is a totally redesigned unit, nothing like the dtronic. I think it was released in 2014.... Or thereabouts, and much of the development on the injector drivers specifically for toyota was done in OzUnichip also have the same warrenty info in writing :-)

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both are good units. For me the safari just tipped me over with all the inbuilt Safty features and the fact of how well the brand is know for good products.

    Great Review. So could they fit the ARMAX after the TJM in the same quarter panel? How did you go covering all the mounting holes?

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Andrew Watts
      Hey Andrew. Yes they managed to fit over the holes of the TJM. The only two holes that were left were the ones on the A pillar that held the top of the snorkel. The new ram head covers most of them but you can still see them. We just put 2 black rubber gromuts in the holes to seal them up. My plan is to make up a little logo from my TH-cam channel and make it into a badge and use the holes to mount it. I think it will be a neat way of making a feature of something that’s not ideal.
      Overall I’d still do it again and be left with the holes for the overall benifits of the new snorkel and ECU. It’s bloody amazing how much better it is to drive.

    • @andrew9465
      @andrew9465 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the reply. Wonder how the ecu would go with the TJM snorkel? How does the noise of the two snorkels compare under load?

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Andrew Watts
      The only difference I can hear is I can hear the whistle of the turbos a fair bit more. ( which I love the sound of ). It just makes it so much more free flowing with the extra air flow. The TJM has the same air flow rate as the standard air box before fitting anything.
